Butterfree vs Mothra

Butterfree is back and this time he’s up against Mothra! Mothra is a pretty good fighter and all, but in the end she won’t be able to win this round. Her size works against her as Butterfree could bombard Mothra with many different attacks in a short timespan. Butterfree wins.

Alright so the arguments i’m seeing here are twofold:

    1. Mothra’s size works against her

Mothra is fast enough to be capable of space flight which requires her to move at least 17,800 mph to get out of Earth’s orbit which is approx. Mach 23.3. Even if you want to make the argument that this is travel speed, and that the combat speed would be lower, it would still be absurdly fast. Split it in half and you still have over Mach 11.5. Split it in thirds and you still have over Mach 7.75. Split it in tenths and you still have Mach 2.33.

Mothra is large yes, but’s she’s plenty fast with just this feat in mind. You only talked about how many attacks Butterfree can get out. But you never bothered to expand upon how Butterfree is even meant to keep up with this level of speed.

    2. Butterfree can get a bunch of attacks on her quickly

First off you’re going to have to show what attacks Butterfree is using and how quickly they can be used. Then you’ll have to demonstrate they can do any sort of significant damage against Mothra

Artillery shells literally bounce off of her:

She can tank multiple beams from Battra which can cut through skyscrapers:

Can survive Keizer Ghidorah’s gravity beams and the whole meteor shower KG brought to the planet simply by landing there(which you can see in the background of this picture):

    • All right so to the Mothra flying into space gif to start with. Look at how slow she’s flying. There must have been a time jump of several hours because at that speed she wasn’t even moving supersonic. It’s a good durability feat since the vacuum of space wasn’t hurting her but that’s nowhere near fast enough to dodge Butterfree’s attacks.

For the other moments, she did tank the blasts which is a good feat albeit they did seem to deal some serious damage based on the sparks. Was a great movie all around. So those blasts did effortlessly pierce the buildings so they’re easy building busters. That said, if that can damage Mothra then the Kaiju is really in a world of hurt. Lets look at what Butterfree has in store.

Lets break this into some quick categories here. First up the speed:

Butterfree is faster than a hellicopter so Mothra will have a hard time landing hits here. Yes Mothra has some really large lasers like in Leo mode but they still require you to be in the right direction and Butterfree should have the edge in the air.

For an alternate route to victory Butterfree has every Pokemon powder in the book from sleeping gas to paralysis gas and can cover a wide area with that. This will slow Mothra down even if she is likely far too large and durable to actually go down from it. Any stat reduction plays into Butterfree’s hand.

Now we were talking about Battra’s blasts destroying buildings? Well Butterfree’s been hit by building destroying attacks as well

It did deal massive damage so it’s not something that she could endure more than 2-3 times max but it does allow for a little error if Butterfree does manage to get hit once.

So Butterfree’s got the speed to land the hits and durability to take on. Throw in that she has a ton of powerful attacks like Hyper Beam and it should be a wrap

I’m not accepting this reasoning. There is zero confirmation whatsoever that there is any sort of time jump. And to be able to get out of the Earth’s atmosphere at all one must be moving at high enough speeds to do so.

I repeat, for her to have gotten out of Earth’s atmosphere she must have been moving at high enough speeds to do so. She at absolute minimum must be moving at hypersonic speeds to pull this off. There is no time jump bs that you can pull off to ignore this physical requirement, as she’s simply just flying out of there. This is a cop out that cannot be used here.

“Butterfree is faster than a hellicopter so Mothra will have a hard time landing hits here. Yes Mothra has some really large lasers like in Leo mode but they still require you to be in the right direction and Butterfree should have the edge in the air.”

Helicopters aren’t particularly fast compared to regular aircraft, as that level of speed usually isn’t required. I can’t exactly determine what speed it’s moving at, so I have to base it off of real life helicopters. Normally I would be against this, but they seem to have a pretty similar design and functionality to real life helis so i’m more willing to so that.

The Boeing V22 Osprey, the fastest known helicopter at max speed is around 350 mph. This is well under supersonic speeds. And that’s assuming this helicopter here is moving at full speed and is as fast as the Osprey, which cannot be confirmed in any way. So Butterfree travelling at this speed isn’t helpful. Mothra moving fast enough to get into space is still going to utterly dwarf it.

I’m unconvinced that Mothra is going to have any issue with this.

“For an alternate route to victory Butterfree has every Pokemon powder in the book from sleeping gas to paralysis gas and can cover a wide area with that. Honestly just dismissing this right here right now since it it’s being used on a Staryu. Several Butterfree were needed to knock out these grunts here:

If several are there to knock out these regular sized humans, I don’t see any reason why ONE can do anything significant to a being that dwarfs it in size.

“Now we were talking about Battra’s blasts destroying buildings? Well Butterfree’s been hit by building destroying attacks as well”

I mean the Tentacruel definitely appears to be holding back. It was easily capable of launching a human through the air like they’re Team Rocket. But when it hit Zubat or any of the other Pokemon, many of whom are significantly lighter they weren’t launched nearly as far. Even with pokemon durability I can’t justify this being anything other than being the Tentacruel holding back. Especially since it’s actively questioning why Pokemon are helping humans which indicates it has sympathy for them on some level. And even more especially since it doesn’t take building level attacks to launch pokemon that don’t even weigh 100 lbs.

And it’s hard to tell whether Butterfree even got the brunt of the attack. It seems like Bulbasaur definitely did, but it’s really difficult to discern how much of that tentacle actually hit Butterfree or whether it just grazed Butterfree.

“It did deal massive damage so it’s not something that she could endure more than 2-3 times max but it does allow for a little error if Butterfree does manage to get hit once.

It’s pretty obvious the Tentacruel isn’t going all out on the Pokemon here, it’s unclear how much of the hit actually connected with Butterfree, and we see nothing afterwards to help with that. Mothra being able to outright tank more than one of Battra’s beams like that is just way more clear and just more impressive even based off the way you’re trying to describe it in Butterfree’s favor.

        The speed isn’t there.

The durability is questionable at best.

And I’ll need to see some moves from Butterfree to gauge how powerful they are.

      • I looked at the clip again though and Mothra just looks incredibly slow. I get that with physics it means she should be moving fast to leave Earth but it could just be the writers not knowing what they were doing. Mothra’s always been portrayed as a rather slow Kaiju like all Godzilla fighters with the exceptions of Rodan and Ghidorah. If Mothra was that fast she wouldn’t constantly be getting tagged by every Kaiju in the multiverse.

Now for Tentacruel holding back, yeah that’s probably true. Still a really impressive feat for Butterfree though to stay on the offensive the whole time. Now lets look at some of Butterfree’s hype moments.

In this first clip she was able to move at high speeds when fighting off a Raticate. Additionally you see that his fangs are cashing with her chest and yet she’s stalemating. That’s also a durability feat for the two in one. Finally I would point out the sleep powder again.

In this clip Butterfree no sells a Staryu spin attack. Only lost due to a ring out but immediately got up with no visible damage.

Butterfree doesn’t have a lot of animated fights so I don’t have any clips with the Hyper Beam as of yet but it’s definitely still worth noting that Butterfree is quite literally built different from other fighters with the clips we saw above. Lets just pause on that speed for a moment, this is pure combat speed. Mothra can shoot a ton of energy blasts and get herself all tired but Butterfree will be able to dodge every hit and land her counter hits immediately. What this does is put her in the perfect position to land devastating blow after blow.

Let me ask you, what is Mothra going to do to that? Either the repeated attacks will beat her or the sleeping powder will do the job.
