A Christmas Story Review

It’s time for another wholesome Christmas story and this is another one that I was really not familiar with. It has a very nice animation style that is retro but still looks really good. The story also shows just how fast Santa is and why it would be hard to catch such a guy. When you think about it, he would need to be fast to visit every child on Christmas. The movie does not disappoint with his depiction of speed.

The story starts with Christmas rapidly approaching but unfortunately Timmy forgot to mail his letter to Santa. The parents hadn’t noticed either and so it wound up under the table. Gumdrop realizes this and lets his pal Goober know that they have to save Timmy’s Christmas. The problem is that it’s already Christmas Eve and so there are only a few hours left until Santa is supposed to arrive. If the two animals don’t hurry, Timmy will be doomed.

Now you do have to allot a certain level of blame over to Timmy and his parents here. They should have been more prepared considering that it’s Christmas. I suppose the parents especially since in this world we know that Santa Claus is real which changes things up quite a bit. You would assume that the parents definitely know what is going on here since mysterious presents appear each year. At the end of the day though, Timmy needed to be ready and make sure that everything was on point. It’s his gifts after all.

Now you do have to wonder if Santa would have managed to turn up with the gifts anyway. It all depends on just how powerful he is in this version. Based on how he succeeded at the end, I’m betting that he probably would have known about the letter anyway. You can interpret the scene to mean that he saw the letter while the animals were resting too so in that case then you’d give the heroes some more credit.

Gumdrop gets most of the credit here for being the instigator. He was the one running around and making sure that everyone searched for the letter. If he didn’t notice and force the issue then Goober was going to be sleeping through the whole thing. Goober is still the most enjoyable character though. I like how relaxed he is the whole time. Goober is the kind of character who doesn’t really get stressed on his own and just looks at the positive side of things.

Also once Goober was in on the mission, he definitely made a difference. He has the size and speed to cover a whole lot of ground. The special also had a good amount of teamwork as we saw all of the various animals from the neighborhood chipping in to try and get Santa’s attention. Ultimately numbers alone just aren’t going to be enough to catch up to someone like Santa. His sheer speed and skill are just too good.

When it comes to the animation, it’s really solid like I mentioned before. It’s very traditional and the kind of hand drawn style that really ages well. The colors are striking and the expressions can look rather funny which adds to the humor. It makes for a special that thrives beyond its years on the visual side. There isn’t as much to say on the soundtrack side so it loses on that front.

A good story doesn’t need a whole bunch of extra details and this one really focused on that as a strength. Santa is well known enough where it’s not like he needed a bunch of screen time after all and you still felt his presence the whole time. It would be interesting to learn more about the world and how Santa affects it but in a way the mystery is the fun part. With a special like this, you’re seeing the proof of concept and can fill in the blanks on your own.

Overall, A Christmas Story is a pretty fun film. It has a good amount of humor and the whole thing is very frantic. The pacing is always fast and it’s just a nice story. You’re given a solid premise about getting a letter to Santa and then it’s really on the animation to sell this. It definitely works out and I would recommend watching this one if you’re looking for something fun for Christmas.

The Christmas Tree Review

It’s time for a film about criminal negligence. It’s all well and good to use your money to help the poor and support local orphanages but what’s not cool is being manipulated without your knowledge. That’s exactly what happens here though and some basic checks could have helped to prevent that. The movie has a good story to tell even if it is fairly low budget in just about every department.

The movie starts by introducing us to a corrupt orphanage led by Mavilda. She does her best to make sure the kids are not happy and this way she keeps all of the money to herself. The mayor donates a ton of money into the orphanage from the town every year and is happy to be helping out so much but what he doesn’t realize is that it’s not helping out at all. He’s being played for a Grade A sucker the entire time! Noooooo, but yes that’s what is going on. One day, Judy and her family move into town. Her husband Ray has a new job that is quite far though so they will not be living together. Judy can now have her kids stay at the orphanage and she will work as an assistant.

What about the Christmas tree? Well, the one thing that keeps the kids hopes alive is a big tree that they call Mrs. Hopewell. It is a powerful tree that has withstood the test of time. It’s not one of those mini trees that will succumb to the elements. Unfortunately, Mavilda may be chopping it down just to spite the kids. Can Judy stop this abuse of power or will she be too timid to do anything about it?

The fact of the matter is that Mavilda is a complete villain here. Not one of those half hearted ones or anything like that. She is straight up doing her best to torment the kids at every turn and yet nobody is doing anything about it. That’s definitely the biggest plot point that makes no sense. Someone should have figured out something and that someone is the mayor. Like I said before about negligence, considering all of the money that is being funneled into this operation, he really should have been doing something. The fact that he just takes Mavilda at her word each time is crazy. What happened to full home inspections?

The mayor ends up being one of the worst characters here by default because of this. I don’t actually blame the orphans much because what are a bunch of kids gonna do? Yeah they probably could have lodged some complaints or done things of that nature, but again they are very little kids. I’m not sure it’s right to be putting the burden on them to correct this whole mess. I am going to take a shot at Ray here for a bit. How do you move somewhere brand new and then say you have to leave your wife alone for 6 months. Really? That’s absolutely crazy before you’ve really had a chance to scope the place out. At the very least you need to make sure there aren’t any mean characters who will treat Judy poorly.

Then Judy is more of a timid character which isn’t going to work well. She puts up with a ton of absolute disrespect the entire time. This is where you need to have more self respect. It’s obvious that Mavilda is overstepping her bounds so Judy should have gone straight to the mayor a whole lot sooner. Like when Mavilda canceled the shopping trick, that was an obvious abuse of power since the mayor was just there with the money. I would have liked Judy to have had more agency the whole time.

Instead the kids really have to get the job done. Lily and Pappy work with the other kids to send someone to go get Santa. It’s a smart move I have to admit because Santa is probably the only one who can really stop Mavilda at this rate. He has super powers and a whole army after all. Don’t expect a big action sequence or anything like that but we do have lightning on the way.

All in all, we get a happy ending here and everything but the problems lasted a lot longer than they needed to. It’s important to be able to fight back against the darkness and that’s something these characters had not yet figured out. It’s still crazy to think that Mavilda was wasting this money for so many years on gambling and nobody found out. That’s just nuts and it’s not like she was all alone the whole time either. She was playing with other people and even had a friend who is a thief. So nobody squealed and people would just show up with extra money and there were no questions asked? This whole town needs some work.

The animation is definitely on the rough side here, there’s no getting around that. The characters are often off model and an animation student would probably find over 100 errors by the time they are watching this. It’s clearly not a super professional product so it doesn’t exactly win any awards on this front. On the other hand, the story isn’t the most developed and the writing is only okay so this does fit the rest of the special. These all may sound more like insults than complements but in a way that’s fine. This isn’t trying to become some kind of super deep picture.

It’s just a fun little Christmas story for all ages. It doesn’t have any crude humor or annoying jokes either. The reason I enjoyed it is because it’s just a harmless little film. I would say that the short run time helps the replay value quite a bit. I could watch this special right now and not be bored in the slightest. That’s why it is good, I actually have a good time with it. Just have some snacks and you can joke around with the movie. All of the characters may frustrate you because none of them show any initiative and the villain gets off too easily….but hey you can’t win them all. Better luck next time and at least going forward the orphanage should be considerably better.

Overall, The Christmas Tree is a fun film. I had a good time with it despite the limitations on the budget. In fact, in some ways they sort of help because the film leans into this so hard that it becomes part comedy. I don’t think it was intentional of course but that’s how rough the animation is. You don’t really see very many films like this nowadays. So you should definitely watch it as a relic of its time. It’s got wholesome messages to be read and an actual villain. You are getting the full experience here so there’s no reason to skip out on it. Especially with how short it is. You will be done in no time.

Christmas at the Drive-In Review

It’s time for our next wholesome Christmas adventure! This time we’re bringing in the Drive-In theater to the mix which is a fun little element to make this one more unique. Ultimately it succeeds on all of the classic Christmas elements you would want to see here. Definitely no real negatives to say about this film and so you’ll have a fun time from start to finish.

The film starts off by introducing us to Sadie who was a very impressive lawyer back in the day but she has decided to hang up her career in order to move back home and become a teacher. She is quite fulfilled in this role but then runs into her ex-boyfriend Holden. There’s a lot of history between these two as Holden stood her up on their last date and so their relationship fell apart. It’s been many years but the reunion is not under happy circumstances as Holden wants to destroy the Drive-In theater. Sadie is resolved to save it though and so the town is giving her until Christmas to prove that it can still be a hit. If not, then it will be destroyed to pave the way for new jobs. As Holden technically owns the Drive-In, he is forced to assist her as a good faith effort but his heart’s not really in it. Can Sadie pull this off?

Now as soon as they said Holden and Sadie used to be together you knew that things were going to get a little dicey for them. Holden’s excuse is that he saw Sadie cheating on him back in the day so that’s why he didn’t approach her and so the two of them are still single to this day. You can probably guess what kinds of misunderstandings are going on here. You’d think both characters would be a little too busy following their interests for romance at this late time but hey that’s how it goes I suppose.

I was glad that the film brought in more of an emphasis on baking and showing off different Christmas snacks because I’ve missed that from some of the recent movies that I’ve seen. The sugar cookies looked like fun as well as the chocolate drink. It’s definitely the time of the year to eat as much as you can and just have a good time with it. The Christmas decorations and backgrounds are also handled really well. The town looks like it would be a fun place to hang out and the Drive-In looks nice. Now that’s not really something I’d be all that tempted to do because being in a car just feels a bit too confining, I’d probably prefer to stand outside and watch but with the cold temperatures outside the average civilian would probably need the heater.

The writing is on point here. While the story may be somewhat predictable, I always say that it’s all about the execution. Just because you know how a story will end doesn’t mean that it’s bad. You shouldn’t always try to subvert everyone’s expectations after all as sometimes the expected ending is the right one to go with. The pacing is good and the film really goes by quickly. The main cast is also quite small here. You have the main two of course who do a good job. Holden may not have been very enthusiastic at first but he’s a good guy and gradually started putting in more and more of an effort. He even spent a ton of money on this project which was impressive.

Sadie of course was doing her best from the start and it’s great that she was looking out for the town the whole time. Losing the drive-in would have been rough even if granted, I think the town would have ultimately been okay. She also does her best to help someone in fighting a legal battle. I appreciated Kendra as a solid antagonist who sympathized with Holden’s plight but had the highest obligation to her shareholders. She was going to get a profit out of this no matter what and that’s the attitude you have to have when you’re in charge. It’s nothing personal after all, just business.

Then you have Bobby who was another antagonist. I mean from his perspective Holden is the trailer since the two had long since signed the contract. That said, he does play a dirty trick in bribing the council so the guy ultimately does not have the moral high ground at all. He really should have kept to playing fair all the way til the end. It’s always good to have a true antagonist to spice things up though so that was fun. He was an entertaining character all the way through to the end.

At the end of the day this film spreads a good message about friendship and uniting the people with a common cause. You don’t really see this kind of experience as much in the big city but in a small town where everyone knows each other you like to think that everyone would have each other’s back for a situation like this.

Overall, This was a pretty fun film. As always what I like to see in a Christmas film is a solid message and good vibes all throughout. The ending should always leave you feeling happy and fulfilled which this movie pulls off. You definitely feel good watching it and it properly captures the Christmas spirit. I would definitely recommend checking it out and having a good time with this film. It should get you in the mood to celebrate as we are getting very close to the end of the year right now!
