The Man of Steel Mxy’s Magical Mayhem Review

9781434244888

Mxyzptlk has always been one of Superman’s trickier foes. Superman can’t really stop him unless he gets the guy to say his name backwards. That’s just about impossible to do against the average joe, but luckily Mr Mxyzptlk isn’t that smart. Still, can he hold his own for an entire book against the Man of Steel?

This is the longest Superman book so far and nearly reached 100 pages. We get to see a lot more of Clark Kent than usual as Mr Mxyzptlk keeps messing with him. Mr Mxyzptlk makes Clark Kent late to work, kick over a chair, spill some water, and even makes the world forget about Superman. Superman tries to prove himself to the world, but they’re too skeptical. Superman realizes that he must stop Mr Mxyzptlk and also stop all of his pranks before someone gets hurt. Mr Mxyzptlk has turned the town fair’s rides into giant animals that are wrecking havok on the world. One hero may not be enough this time!

It was a pretty fun book and it’s always good to see Superman use his brains to solve the situations. Superman’s a solid protagonist and he’s someone that you find yourself rooting for. Early on, he reminds the readers that he’s Superman and he is able to do everything at super speed. The other characters weren’t that great in this comic. Once Kent starts getting out of control, they should suspect that something’s up. In Metropolis, things like this happen all of the time. It would have been nice to see Lois or Perry suspect that something was up and get their own subplot. Maybe if the book were a bit longer.

Mr Mxyzptlk is still really mean to Superman, but we never really understand why. He seems to just be like a kid who wants to have a little fun. I guess, watching Superman mess up can be fun, but it must get old after a while. As far as villains go, Mr Mxyzptlk isn’t my favorite and I don’t think that he’s meant to hold his own book. A role as a supporting villain would work better I believe.

Overall, this was a pretty fun Superman book. The ending was very abrupt, (Only a few lines after the villain is defeated) but it was still satisfying. If you’re a Superman fan, or just like to read a quick/fun story, then you’ve come to the right book. I’d definitely recommend this title.

Justice League Unlimited The Ties That Bind Review

1120987

Justice League will always be known as the greatest superhero show of all time. There’s no superhero show that is even close and I doubt that any will ever pass the series. Justice League had awesome animation and character designs, which led to great fights. Was the comic able to live up to the show? Let’s find out! There are six segments in the comic, so we’ll go through them one at a time.

First up was a comic about Girder breaking out of jail. It was around the holidays and most of the JLA members were happily at home. I feel bad for the ones that are forced to stay on monitor duty. What about their Christmas Parties on Earth? Possibly a little out of character for the JLA, but ignoring that, we have a pretty solid comic. The team of Supergirl, Powergirl, Atom Smasher, Star Girl, Firestorm, and Hawkgirl go to confront Girder. Should be a peace of cake right? Unfortunately, Girder is actually defeating them pretty easily which didn’t make much sense. Atom Smasher may be their only hope, but since when is he stronger than Supergirl and Power Girl? They were definitely very depowered in this comic, but it was still pretty fun to read.

The next comic was probably the most exciting. The Government gets Uncle Sam and his Freedom Fighters to infiltrate the Justice League headquarters. They go up there, but the Freedom Fighters throw a sucker punch at the Atom, which leads into a big fight. The Justice League should have mopped the floor with the Freedom Fighters, but they are pretty under powered in this comic. Seems like a running error in this collection right? It was still epic because it felt like the JLA vs Avengers comic, but the fight was a lot shorter.

The next comic was about a cab driver from the future. He goes through time, giving people rides through space. One day he sees a red light and sees Superman on a planet…dying! The Cab Driver is pretty intense and he manages to get Superman into the cab. We find out that he’s the best driver out there and he’s able to dodge many lasers. Superman and the Cab Driver definitely make a good team, I don’t think I’d agree these aliens could defeat Superman. They’re very weak, but they have kryptonite lasers! The art is definitely the most sketchy in this story, but it’s pretty fun to look at.

One comic involved time travel and was one of the weaker comics. Wonder Woman, The Vigilante, and Elongated Man head into the past, where they help some “Old” heroes take down a guy who has stolen some tech from the future. There weren’t any real action scenes and the comic was a bit boring. Not awful, but it definitely didn’t feel like a Justice League comic.

The next comic was about Mary Marvel. After saving the Justice League from possible annihilation, she heads to the watchtower. Martian Manhunter says that Shazam is welcome back on the team, but I don’t see why he would want to come back. Mary Marvel wanted to talk to Wonder Woman, but she’s busy battling a super villain. Supergirl takes Mary Marvel to go see the fight, but they are shocked to see…The Justice League are losing! Once again, the JLA seem pretty under powered, but I can’t say that I was very surprised. Mary Marvel stops Supergirl from joining the fight (Which I don’t agree with) so that they can win the fight using their wisdom. They would have won either way though.

The next comic was about the Justice League trying to stop a natural disaster. The disaster wasn’t as normal as you might have guessed and the Justice League are taken down pretty easily. Gone are the days when Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Black Canary, and Vixen teaming up are enough to stop Killer Frost and her partner. After a while, they use the villains’ infighting to their advantage and make this a real fight. This was the worst comic of the batch, but it was still all right. The dialogue was really boring, which is what hampered the comic and I didn’t like Any of the characters.

Finally, the last comic was about the Gypsy. She’s pretty happy to be a member of the Justice League and now she’s a Gypsy in name only. She finds out about a group of villains storming warehouses and alerts the JLA. Unfortunately, the villains claim that they are heroes and tell the JLA that they’ll sue. The Justice League gets out of there very quickly, but Gypsy isn’t entirely convinced. It was an all right comic, but it definitely lacked the action that the first 4 had.

Overall, this was a pretty decent collection of Justice League stories. It’s good to see the DCAU back in action and it was pretty nostalgic. The art could have been better, but at least the fight scenes were definitely epic. For the most part, all of the characters were pretty solid, or about as good as their DCAU counterparts. I’d recommend giving this comic a read if you are a comic fan. Who doesn’t like some solid DC fights right?

Green Lantern Agent Orange Review

12907_900x1350

Green Lantern has been a pretty great comic book series for as long as I can remember. I can’t think of a single “bad” arc that has come out in the last decade. Maybe even longer! The GL franchise (Because it has spawned other stories about the Corps) always has solid art and great fight scenes. It’s also a blast to read because space battles are very enjoyable.

This collection covers the Agent Orange arc (Hence the title) and the final few pages lead into Blackest Night. The collection (Or Hal Jordan’s part of it) starts off with Hal Jordan still trying to get rid of his Blue Lantern Ring. (Personally, I’d keep it, since it amps up his GL ring and constantly recharges it. Likewise the GL ring does the same to the BL ring.) The Blue Lanterns are actually pretty mean…or not very understanding of the whole situation. They are attacked by Manhunters which is always a cause for concern, because this usually leads to intergalactic wars or very complicated situations.

Meanwhile, a group of really “tough” characters have infiltrated a cave. They have found the orange light of power and wish to claim it for themselves. With this power at their disposal, they can finally defeat the Red, Yellow, and Green Lanterns and conquer the galaxy! Their plans are quickly foiled and the leader of the Orange Lanterns, Larfleeze, declares war on the Green Lanterns. After all, these cave infiltrators were once affiliated with them. The Guardians respond by assembling the full might of the GL Core and attacking Larfleeze’s home planet (And they search the rest of the sector for fugitives)

Larfleeze is the main villain of the comic, but I can’t say that he’s one of my favorite characters. I didn’t really care for him and while his constructs are powerful, I’d take Hal over him in a fair fight. Luckily it wasn’t a fair fight for either of them. Hal Jordan had his BL ring to amp up his GL ring, and Larfleeze had his Orange power battery so that he could keep on charging his OL ring.(Keeping track of all the abbreviations?) Like him or not, Larfleeze is still a formidable foe and should be regarded as such.

Hal Jordan is still the main character and it’s definitely for a reason. He seems to be the most competent out of the Green Lanterns and he quickly takes the fight to Larfleeze. He single-handedly gives him a good fight, while the rest of the core are struggling against his constructs. His uniform also looks the coolest and the mask is pretty cool. I prefer when it’s hard/sharp as opposed to the Lone Ranger/Robin type of mask from the old days. Jordan was definitely my favorite character from the comic.

John Stewart gets a decently large role in the comic as well, but he just doesn’t seem as skilled as Hal. He ends up getting some help from one of his old enemies, but he still manages to take out a lot of Orange Lanterns. I can’t really say that I liked his character a lot, but I didn’t dislike him. He just didn’t leave a big impression.

Agent Orange is a pretty solid arc that I believe you will enjoy. All GL fans will certainly get a kick out of it and it’s very fun and easily accessible. New fans to the series shouldn’t be confused and the art is spectacular. The Guardians make a pretty controversial call towards the end, but they never were heroes now were they? The lead into Blackest Night is definitely epic and we see that some characters may be getting a role in the upcoming battles (Star Sapphire). You definitely won’t want to miss this collection!

Supergirl Volume 1 Last Daughter of Krypton Review

2656382-__kgrhqnhjegfbutczfv3bqgdicrv8g__60_57
Superman’s always gotten a lot of different comic series over the years, but what about his cousin? While Supergirl is a pretty major character of DC, she’s usually more of a supporting character than the main one. When the Supergirl comic series started, it was definitely a good move on DC’s part and I had some really high expectations. Did it meet them? Time to find out!

The comic starts off with Supergirl crashing into earth and government agents quickly surround her. They’re inside of robots so that they’ll be (heh) “Protected” in case Supergirl is hostile. She’s definitely hostile and punches one of them far enough that he’s instantly out of sight. The robots were partially responsible for starting the fight, but Supergirl’s always quick to go into action. Supergirl is taking them apart pretty easily and she’s still indecisive about the battle. It’s not like she wants to pulverize the robots upon first waking up. Luckily…The Man of Steel arrives to calm things down.

Superman doesn’t do a great job of calming things down and he even refuses to give out his name until Supergirl says hers. It’s a classic “Superman” move that you would have seen a lot of, back in the 60’s. It was good to see him acting retro, but it didn’t really help the situation. After Superman claims that he’s Supergirl’s cousin, (Which I doubt anyone would really believe at that point) Supergirl nails him with a solid shot that sends him flying. They don’t really get to have a long fight, but Supergirl definitely lands in a lot of good shots. Superman flies off to do heroic things, while Supergirl heads into space as she follows a flying object.

It leads her to a spaceship where she meets up with..The Brain! He’s actually pretty powerful, but I’m not sure if I agreed with the fight. I think Supergirl would crush him, but at least DC tried to make him as a big threat. I definitely won’t be forgetting The Brain anytime soon.

Finally, the last group of comics involves the Worldkillers. They’re a team of immensely powerful individuals. Individually, they are already powerful, but together, they form one of the strongest teams in comics. Their group is small, but each of their members is pretty tough, Reign, being the strongest by far. The arc was pretty great and it definitely had the most action from the Supergirl comics. There was finally an enemy who could give Supergirl a good fight.

Supergirl makes for a pretty solid protagonist and I’m glad to see that she’s quick to fight in this version. She’s had many incarnations, but this one is probably the best that I’ve seen aside from the DCAU. She’s already mastered her powers to a degree and they are hinting that she’s stronger than Superman, or that she will surpass him. Reign mentions that Supergirl is the only threat on the planet. (I guess the Justice League won’t be able to help this time) Supergirl’s costume is pretty good, it’s very similar to Superman/Superboy’s in the New 52, but I miss the cape. The cape was always one of the best parts of the uniform.

The Worldkillers make for a pretty good villain group. Reign is a great villain and she’s the perfect adversary for Supergirl. She’s basically Supergirl’s version of Black Adam or Bizarro. Reign wields a sword, which is pretty cool. Beyond that, she has most of the same powers as Supergirl, but to a slightly lesser extent. She may have been defeating Supergirl in space, but they were far from the sun. On Earth, I think that things would go differently. The only member of the group that I didn’t like was Deimax. She’s basically a lizard creature who has super strength. Not very original and she didn’t have much in the way of character. One of the opponents could fire energy blasts and appeared to almost be made of light. (The character reminded me of Soul Saver Dragon.) There was also a plant type creature who seemed to have less super strength and long range combat abilities, but made up for it with her long reach.

The Supergirl comic series is definitely off to a solid start and I’ll be looking forward to seeing how things play out from here. The art is definitely solid and the action scenes feel pretty streamlined. There was one typo in the comic, which is pretty rare. I won’t hold it against the comic, but it’s something that you may want to watch out for. (To test your analyzing skills) I definitely recommend picking up this series if you like cool action scenes or just like to look at the art for battle scenes. Not to mention that the character roster is better than most and things are moving at a good pace.

Batman Scarecrow Doctor of Fear Review

9781434219893

Batman has gotten several books in the Super DC Heroes line up, but this is the first one that I’ve read. It was a decently solid book, but it lacked the stakes and epicness that the Superman and Green Lantern books have been bringing to the table. Of course, Batman is still a pretty tough protagonist.

The book starts out with a pretty likable character who’s the cashier at a place that’s like Walmart. He’s ready to close the shop, but then the lights turn off and the door locks. He handles the whole thing pretty well and I’d be interested to read a book about him. Unfortunately, he doesn’t appear again, as Batman takes the stage. Batman and Batgirl secure the grounds and then Batman finds the perpetrator. The guy doesn’t seem that brave, but could he be hiding something? Batman’s going to have to use all of the intelligence at his disposal if he wants to solve this case.

The title of the book immediately lets you know who the real culprit is, which wrecks the mystery. Still, I’m sure that DC had their reasons. Scarecrow isn’t a really good villain and in a fight, he’s definitely no match for Batman. Batgirl briefly appears in the book, but she’s mostly gathering intelligence while Batman goes to confront the villains. Batman stays in character for the most part and he’s not playing around!

Naturally, the book was really short, but it was good. I’d recommend checking it out if you’re a Batman fan, or if you just like books based off of comics. Of course, I’d sooner recommend checking out the Superman books. Either way, you won’t regret checking it out!

Iron Man 2020 Review

1344717

Iron Man 2020 takes place in the slight future (Of Earth 8140), but most of the current generation of heroes are gone. The new Iron Man is Tony Stark’s cousin, Arno. It’s interesting to see how they depicted the future back in the ole days. Things have definitely changed a lot over the years.

The first comic deals with Arno attempting to stop a bomb from detonating. It would destroy just about everyone around so the stakes were pretty high. The only person who could diffuse the bomb was dead, so Arno was forced to go to the past and find him. Unfortunately, Arno ran into Spiderman and doesn’t handle the situation well. After he injures a innocent bystander, Spiderman is forced to go all out. It’s a very one sided fight and I guess that’s what we can expect. This issue was definitely the best from the collection and it also contained the best fight.

In the next few issues, Arno is hired to take down the Machine Man. Since the Machine Man’s tech is so old, it should be no problem to defeat him right? Well, it’s not the armor that makes the man, but the other way around. Arno is a really bad fighter and every fighter he makes contact with, tend to mop the floor with him. This mini series is really about the Machine Man and Iron Man doesn’t even get to fight until the final two comics of the arc. It’s good to see the Machine Man getting his props, but it was basically filler. In the next comic, Arno takes on Death’s Head since he was told to do so. He doesn’t ask any questions and he just wants money….he gets less heroic by the comic.

In the 6 issue mini series, Arno hosts a party with a lot of rich people, but he’s attacked by one of his old enemies. Iron Man scrambles his fighters and he goes out to fight the robots. They’re mostly cannon fodder and the head of the villains is an average human, so he can’t fight. The collection of comics ends with a What If comic. It was good to see Iron Man take him down a couple of pegs and he was in his cool 90’s design.

Well, Arno Stark is a pretty bad protagonist. The comic shows his decline from (Arguable at best) hero to downright villain. He starts out by trying to save his planet and then he becomes a mercenary for hire. He drops one guy off of a roof and blasts another guy straight out of this life. He’s basically a twisted Tony Stark, but not quite as cool as the former. His armor is also laughably weak. He loses to robots from decades ago and one good hit is usually enough to weaken his armor. I also can’t say that I’m crazy about the design. Especially in the six issue mini series, it was very bulky.

Spiderman gets a pretty good role and he’s probably the best hero in the comic. He shows us what a real hero is and he gets the job done. Once he enters rage mode, he makes short work of his opponents. Iron Man 2020’s armor never stood a chance against those punches. War Machine looks pretty bad, (Granted that it’s a What If comic) but I think that we’ve come to expect that much. The real Iron Man looks pretty good and his armor definitely holds up to the times.

Death’s Head was an interesting villain. It’s always good to see a Transformers character make his way into the marvel universe and he definitely gave Arno a good fight. His sidekick definitely seems like an interesting character and a comic series about their exploits could be fun.

This is a pretty solid collection of comics. I’d recommend it thanks to the classic art and generally quick moving storyline. It’s never boring and it’s always good to expand your marvel knowledge. There aren’t a lot of popular characters in the book, but Spiderman and Iron Man guest star appearances will have to do.

Serial Experiments Lain Review

serial-experiments-lain-cola-wallpaper
Serial Experiments Lain is a very intriguing anime and it’s one that will make you think a lot more than the average show. I am one of those viewers who believes that you should always form your own opinion after finishing something. So, there are probably a lot of theories about what really happened throughout the show, and I’ll try to shed some light on it. The series is pretty short and only contains 13 episodes, but it’s enough to set the tone of the show. You know that this won’t be your average anime when the narrator doesn’t sound like a good guy. The theme song also isn’t that cheerful and it’s a hint of what’s in store.

Chisa jumps off of a building, but instead of dying, her soul goes into the “Wired”. Without a body, she has complete freedom to do whatever she wants and be wherever she wants. Or so she claims. Chisa doesn’t actually appear much, but it sets the seeds for the real protagonist of the show. Lain is gifted with special powers that help her in the “Wired”. The ability has some pretty good perks like teleportion and granting the user a genius level intellect, but the downsides are pretty lethal. The wired rapidly spreading and people are beginning to mysteriously die around the world. Lain could care less about the strangers, but will she be able to protect her friends and stop the “Knights”?

Lain isn’t a bad main character, but I can’t say that I ever got around to really rooting for her. For the first three episodes, she’s extremely quiet. (Reminded me of Peter Parker from The Amazing Spiderman movie) She got better when she began to talk more and started utilizing her powers in more effective ways. Of course, Lain’s abilities seem to have a mind of their own and there are other Lains running around….or so it seems.

Lain has three friends, but the only one to really get a large role in the series would be Alice. For the most part, she attempts to help Lain through her school life and even tries to make Lain have some fun. She’s a good character until we get a pretty big plot twist that made her into an unlikable character. I never really cared for the character before then either. She was constantly thinking that Lain may have been responsible for various things and then changing her mind abruptly. (Of course Lain usually was behind those things….)

“god” also appears and he’s in charge of the wired. He admits that he’s not the real God, but he’s the god of the wired world. He is everywhere at once and his power knows no limits. Unfortunately for him, one can only be a god if others worship him. Lain gets an idea and takes him on. This “god” character was pretty underwhelming and he’s definitely not much of a fighter. There are also two government agents who spy on Lain for most of the series, but in the end they are just pawns in a bigger game. The humans are extremely weak in this show. A little girl armed with a teddy bear succeeds in completely terrorizing a grown man and he runs all the way home. Unfortunately he’s unable to get the lock to open and things don’t go very well for him.

Alright, let’s talk more about the show as a whole and what really happened for most of it. My guess is that Lain was created a little before the wired so that she could control it. Or that she was an all powerful, cosmic entity who wanted to experience life and adopted a human form. Were her parents really her parents? I’d say that foster parents may be a better term and it would explain why they act pretty fake/off for most of the time.

After Chisa jumped and left the school a message, it slowly started to reawaken Lain’s latent powers. At first she couldn’t control her abilities at all and developed split personalities. “Wired Lain” was a lot meaner than the normal one and had a much better perception of her powers. She was basically the total opposite of the regular Lain and probably would have made for a more interesting main character. Lain’s other personalities started exerting their influence on the wired a lot more actively as they went out of their way to knock off some civilians and even mess up Alice’s social life. Lain’s other personality may have deleted her sister as well, but it’s possible that the Knights had something to do with it. The sister’s scene was pretty intense and she put up a decent effort, but nobody can escape the Wired.

The border between the real world and the wired continues to weaken throughout the show. Eventually, humans in the real world can even see Lain up in the sky as a messiah type being. They take it pretty well and nobody ever asks Lain about it. That should probably be the first hint that something’s off….

Lain has unlimited power on the wired and since the real world is almost completely connected to it, her abilities are enhanced in both worlds. She seems to have some telekinesis (Shown in her battle against “god”) and she’s a very advanced reality warper. Not only can she alter people’s memories, but she can also completely rewind time to whatever point that she feels like. It would seem that Lain could have become “god” at anytime, but she didn’t want to give up being a normal person. She liked having a body and not live her immortal life as one with everything. Based on the ending, it would seem that she has made her choice on whether to stay as an immortal humanoid being, or an abstract entity.

There are also some mild hinting that Lain could in fact be an alien. I wouldn’t be surprised, since the government found the alien ship near the end of the show. There are definitely a lot of theories that can be had here, but the important thing is that you know the basics.
1.Lain is All Powerful
2.Lain is “god”
3.Lain can do anything.

Everything else is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things when you think about it. Lain could have just created the entire planet with her abilities, which would explain why things always went badly for the victims. When the sister was trying to escape, people would flicker in and out, not to mention that reality seemed to be against her. In a way, Lain is just toying with everyone as she watched from above. Most of the time, she’s not doing it consciously, but eventually she begins to understand.

One negative of the show would be the lack of fight scenes, but you’re not really supposed to expect those in this show. None of the characters ever really get to be likable characters and there is some really unneeded romance scenes during the show. I liked the theme for the night club that the kids would go too, aside from that, the kids were pretty awful characters.

This anime is a very unique experience to watch and I’d recommend checking it out. There are a lot of really weird and random moments that increase the spookiness factor of the series. It may be the closest that you’ll get to a horror show about the cyber world. It contains some elements from The Ring, The Matrix, and a whole bunch of other things. It’s a good way to learn some fun facts as well. While most of the show can be considered “trippy” with all of the assorted lights and crazy camera angles, the final episode takes a break from that for the most part. The Red light from the first 12 episodes finally turns green for the final one. Knowing this show, it was probably symbolic for something. Anyway, this definitely makes for a great anime to watch during the dead of night!

Megaman NT Warrior Axess Review

Axess continues the Megaman NT Warrior franchise and brings the series to new heights. While NT Warrior was pretty good, Axess is excellent and it’s everything that I could have hoped for in a Megaman series. The grand scale of things is definitely a lot larger than NT Warrior and the threats are very real.

Axess starts off with Megaman effortlessly defeating his opponents. It has been a time of peace and everyone has moved on from the past dangers. Even Megaman seems to be pretty overconfident as he toys with the opponents. When someone tries to eliminate Lan and his friends by removing the air in the building, Lan send Megaman in against his most lethal opponent yet. Savageman is behind this and he may be Megaman’s first true threat in a long time. Megaman hits him with the program advance, but it doesn’t seem to have any noticable effect. Things get dangerous when Savageman appears in the human world! Lan and Megaman are forced to Crossfuse to take him on.

This is just the beginning of the Nebula saga. Crossfusion is a major part of the series, since it’s the only way that the good guys can really fight. (Although, I think that Megaman and pals could just materialize into the area like the villains. I’ve always wondered why they didn’t just do that. It would be simple enough and they could hopefully win.) The series opens up with a lot of solid episodes including the battles against Vineman and Flashman. They introduce a new type of super form called Doublesoul. With this ability, Megaman can merge with a netnavi and gain his abilities, or just absorb a portion of his power and add it on to his own.

The saga reached its climax in episode 27. Megaman and Protoman launch their final offensive against Nebula’s boss, but the Darkloids have also come to finish things. Their are many powerful darkloids and I will talk about several of them later on in the review. When Megaman and Protoman reach the big boss, they find that he is gone. “MY NAME IS LASERMAN!” a voice yells out as a being of pure power gets up from the throne. Megaman and Protoman were quickly dispatched by the leader of the darkloids (Shademan) and are unable to challenge Laserman. Laserman and Shademan quickly have a talk and then Laserman leaves…after blowing up the dimensional area generators. Shademan decides to blow the place up in the hopes of destroying Laserman. Now, Megaman and Protoman must fight Shademan in the cyber world. The battle is very nostalgic, but things get dangerous for the heroes.

The 2nd saga is about Laserman’s group of darkloids. Lan and Megaman have their work cut out for them and they are now outnumbered by a large amount. Chaud can’t do much since Protoman is unable to help at the moment. They call in Raika and Raoul for backup and they come in handy…they just aren’t quite at Protoman level. The climax of the series is definitely intense and has a very cool atmosphere about it.

Lan is still a pretty solid protagonist. He hasn’t changed that much from NT Warrior and he’s always ready for a fight. Now he actually gets to fight which is pretty cool, but sometimes he doesn’t handle it well. His battle experience isn’t as good as Megaman’s so he definitely holds them back.

Megaman is also pretty similar to his NT Warrior counterpart, but he makes less puns. He does seem to be pretty confident during the earlier episodes which is good and he hesitates less than in the old days. His double soul abilities are pretty good to have and they are much better than the Style Change.

Chaud is a pretty solid character for the first saga, but he doesn’t do as well in Arc 2. He makes the ultimate sacrifice and gives Megaman the vulcan, but (Thanks to Lan) he hesitates and loses some time. He fires off the vulcan, but it is too late. That scene was definitely one of the greatest in the entire series and it felt like I was watching a shounen anime. Protoman is pretty solid as well, but once in a while he won’t look so good. Still, he’s one of the better heroes in the series.

Mr Famous is a new character to the show and he seems to run the NetSavers division. He’s not a fighter in the anime and while he’s smart, it’s never enough to help Lan out. There is also a detective and his assistant, but I can’t even get into those guys. They weren’t really great characters and never pulled through when the going got tough.

Lan’s friends don’t appear quite as often in this show. Dex gets an appearance, but he looks pretty bad and he can’t stop Burnerman. Maylu and Roll try to help Megaman out against Flashman, but he proves to be too powerful. Yai and Tori are around, but they also don’t really get to help.

A new hero added to the bunch is named Raika. His netnavi Searchman is pretty good for long range combat and his fight against Shadowman was pretty cool. Shadowman is far stronger thanks to his speed and close range combat, but when you throw a wildcard (Megaman) in to shake things up, Searchman has enough time to get out the shot. Searchman is willing to destroy innocent lives to achieve his target, so he doesn’t get along with Megaman at first. Of course, we can’t totally call Searchman a hero after that right? Arguably he changes his ways, but do we know for sure? Prismman is also a pretty cool navi. He has a solid fight against Gravityman and even takes on Megaman. He’s a solid close range fighter and his design is pretty epic. I wish that we could have seen more of him.

We also can’t forget about Tamako and Metalman. Tamako is one of Lan’s newer rivals and her netnavi packs a punch. Metalman has a lot of raw power, but Megaman’s speed is a good counter to that. He comes in handy during the big battle against Searchman and they’re both decent characters. I can always use a new rival for the main character.

Savageman is the first darkloid to fight and he’s also one of the best ones. Like his name suggests, Savageman is a very savage fighter. He’ll take any opening and launch a powerful attack. He was able to take on the powerful team of Metalman and Megaman. Definitely not an easy feat and one that few can reproduce. He’s very fast and in his final form, he may be one of the strongest darkloids of all time. He’s definitely a high tier Megaman fighter.

Flashman is another great darkloid and his thunder abilities are very quick. He was doing pretty good against Megaman and nearly deleted him. Roll went to take him on as well, but Flashman proved to be too strong. He has a pretty good array of attacks and he’s also a master at close range combat. He was actually holding his own against Protoman in a sword fight.

Shademan was the leader of the darkloids for Arc 1 and he’s a very strong fighter. He’s not that agile, but he makes up for that in raw power. One solid attack is enough to take down Megaman and Protoman teaming up. (In Crossfusion, since Lan and Chaud can’t endure that kind of power. In the net, things would be different) Shademan’s definitely a powerful fighter and he manages to go up against Laserman! He has Bubbleman as a loyal minion, but Bubbleman’s pretty weak. He’s definitely one of the worst darkloids..maybe The worst darkloid.

Desertman is also one of the best Darkloids. Not only does he claim to be immortal, but he has a lot of raw power. He was defeating Megaman with minimal effort and his abilities are great. He’s most dangerous in an enclosed space thanks to his sand lions. They will home in on the opponent and charge. It’s pretty tough to dodge them when there isn’t time to maneuver. His attacks also deal great damage and a couple of lions would end any battle.

Gravityman appeared pretty late in the series, but he quickly became one of my favorites. His gravity drive is immensely lethal and it’s nearly impossible to dodge. Once it gets near, the gravity pushes the opponent into the ground. He can also use gravity to block any projectiles, so he’s essentially invincible in a one one fight. Protoman and Megaman teaming up were nearly destroyed.

We can’t forget about the mighty Laserman! In arc 2, he’s a pretty major character. Not only does he lead the villain armada, but his abilities are very potent. He doesn’t fight until the final episode, but it’s a pretty great one. He uses his super speed to fight with Shademan and then relies on his sheer durability and power to take on Megaman and Protoman. He must be the only fighter to survive a program advance and 6 double souls. “Tremble Before me!” is just one of his cool lines. He’s definitely a fighter to watch out for. Dr Regal is his human ally, but he doesn’t make for an interesting villain. He’s pretty smart though and even surpasses Lan’s dad in that area.

There are many other darkloids that I could continue to mention. Vineman was pretty awesome and his episode was one of the best in the series. Burnerman is also a solid fighter and a decent character. To end on the characters note, I should mention that…BASS appears later on! It’s a small role, but he hints that he could take down Laserman and Shademan pretty easily. He’s definitely not an opponent to underestimate.

Megaman Axess is an anime that I strongly recommend watching. The soundtrack is superb, (The vulcan scene is an example of the greatest music in the show. Possibly one of the greatest of all time!) there are a lot of cool techno music and other sounds from the games. The animation is also a solid step up and the battles are amazing. The cliffhanger also makes you eagerly anticipate watching the next show in the franchise…Stream! So, check this anime out right away!

Whatever Happened To Baby Jane Review

Whatever-Happened-to-Baby-Jane-cover-(250x300)

Whatever Happened To Baby Jane is an old movie that got plenty of good reviews. Upon checking it out, the only question I have is..What!? This has got to be one of the worst movies that I’ve ever seen. (It still beats Sucker Punch….barely) I can’t even….well, let’s talk about the plot first.

Jane was a pretty popular actor when she was a kid and stole the spotlight. She was pretty mean to the rest of the family let the fame go to her head. Her sister Blanche was pretty sad about this, but she got her chance for fame in the upcoming years. While Jane was forgotten, Blanche became a really popular actress. Eventually, they both retired and Blanche was in a car “accident” that caused her to lose the ability to walk. Now, Jane has decided to make Blanche’s life miserable and that’s the plot of the film.

This could have worked as a 5 minute short, but as a whole movie, it just couldn’t last. The cast of the film was pretty awful and there aren’t any decent characters in the film. They’re all really slow on the ball and can’t seem to piece two and two together. Jane is pretty psychotic and Blanche isn’t smart enough to call for help. Elvira lets the main villain get a hold of a hammer and the neighbors never get to help. Edwin gets drunk and is far too slow to be of any real help.

Now, the film was definitely going to get a pretty negative score as it dragged on, but the unnecessary animal violence was going too far. The film didn’t have many points left to lose, but that helped the film drop to rock bottom. There is a plot twist at the end of the film that doesn’t help matters. Also, one of the characters literally gets away with murder. The villain isn’t even arrested at the end. (I like to think that she was, but it’s never shown which isn’t very fulfilling)

In the end, films are meant to make you have a good time. They’re a form of entertainment, so if you aren’t entertained, then the film is failing. This film won’t have any scenes that will make you smile, or even any scenes that will make you care for the characters. It’s supposed to be a pretty tragic film, but there just wasn’t any point in the end. It’s like watching paint dry on the wall. Even Twilight has the occasional fight scene or trash talking scene.

Overall, this is a film that I strongly don’t recommend. It’s very long and not that exciting. Animal lovers should also beware and if you’re looking to rent this film to watch, it won’t be a very enjoyable experience. If you’re looking to find out which classics are overrated, then check it out, but make sure that you have a video game or book with you. On the bright side, anything that you watch afterwards will seem exciting in comparison!

Priest Review

priest_poster

Priest is a Vampire action film that came out back in 2011. I’m not usually a Vampire fan, but I’ve always liked one series on the subject. (Records of a Fallen Vampire) Does this movie change my mind about Vampire films? Well, they stick away from the biting cliche (For the most part) but the Vampire look like zombies for the most part.

The film starts out by telling us that Vampires came and started slaughtering the humans. So they called in the Priests. (In an animated scene that may make you wince if you don’t have a stomach for violence. Of course it is animated, so maybe you’ll let it slide) The Priests have some mild superhuman abilities (Like Captain America) which makes them strong enough to fight the Vampires. Throughout the film, the Priest doesn’t seem that superhuman, but superhuman enough to win most of his battles. The world has lived in peace for ages and they believe the Vampire threat to be over. One day, a girl is kidnapped by Vampires, so her friend enlists the help of The Priest to save her. The Priest goes to help, but now the other Priests are ordered to take him down.

Priest is a pretty good main character and he does what he can to help save the world. He’s made a lot of sacrifices, but he believes that he’s done them for a good cause and he always does what he thinks is right. The Church doesn’t see eye to eye with the Priest, so he is forced to renounce his vows and become a fugitive. “To go against the Church, is to go against God!” is the Church’s catchphrase, but the Priest seems to know that the line is completely false and he continues to have faith. The only moment that seemed a bit sketchy was when he interrogated a Vampire. I still have never believed that good guys have to resort to such crude methods. (Take Superman. He interrogates all right, but in a more heroic way) The Priest didn’t seem that strong, but he still did some decent damage to the Vampires.

The Priestess arrives later on in the film, but with her quick close combat skills and athletics, she makes quick work out of a lot of zomb-Vampires. She didn’t look so good in her initial appearance, but she made up for it during her later fights. The Vampires never knew what hit them!

Hicks is the friend of Lucy (The girl who was kidnapped) and he comes along for the ride. The problem is that he’s a mere mortal wielding a gun. He doesn’t stand a chance against the Vampires and is quickly dispatched when the battles start. Adding him was to make us have a human to root for I suppose. He could have been worse, but I can’t say that he was a great character.

We can’t forget about Black Hat! He’s the main villain of the film and his abilities far surpass that of the main cast. He’s faster and stronger than the Priest and he sees everyone in slow motion. Because of that, he completely dominates in every fight that he’s in. I always get worried when a character is so much stronger than the others because it means that the ending will have to have some major plot hax. (Plot Hax = A scene that wouldn’t really happen, but needs to happen so that the heroes can win. Or the opposite) Black Hat made for a pretty good villain. His only negative scene would probably be losing control at the end. I thought he had more will power than that, but overall that didn’t stop him from being a compelling villain.

The Council at the Church were pretty uninteresting characters. They refuse to believe in the Vampires and are quick to judge others. In the future, the Church seems to have been corrupted. Or at least, the Church definitely seemed a little off. The title makes it obvious that the film will have some religious elements, and it definitely does. The main character claims to draw strength from God and all of the good guys supposedly believe in him. Of course, the main characters murder many vampires, breaking one of the 10 Commandments every other second. Was it necessary? It’s one of those moral questions that you will need to ask yourself. At least the Priest never seemed to break any of the others and seemed to be a pretty honorable guy.

Overall, it’s a decently good film. You should be warned that the violence is very excessive and you probably wouldn’t want to take your kids to watch this film. The action can get as intense as Bleach, but luckily there are only a few cringe worthy scenes. (Animal violence) The fight scenes are decent and while there are missed opportunities in the film, it did a decent job of capturing the future. (Much better than the Hunger Games, but it’s no Final Fantasy) (Actually, now that I’ve brought it up. The film has a lot of resemblances to the Final Fantasy VII Advent Children movie. Same type of motorcycles, The City is extremely similar, hmmmm…) Anyway, if you like Vampire movies, then this is a good one to check out. If you’re looking for a futuristic action blockbuster, then head on over to Tron Legacy.
