The Art of Skiing Review

It’s time for another Disney short. Goofy doesn’t tend to hold his own quite as well as Mickey of Donald, but he’s had some good ones over the years. This one was not my favorite though. It’s another one of the tutorial shorts as the special explains what Skiing is and how to do it well. The problem in my opinion is the narrator. He explains what it happening the whole time, but it feels a little unnecessary. If he just let the visuals speak for themselves then I think this special would have been alot more solid. You really don’t need someone to be explaining what is going on since we can see all of that for ourselves. It really doesn’t add to the bigger picture and it doesn’t help the humor. It’s like when someone says a joke and another character tries to explain it. Explaining the joke just makes it sink even more.

The special is mostly a lot of slapstick as everything goes wrong for Goofy before he finally heads home and calls it a night. You’ll feel bad for Goofy since he really didn’t want to go and skii, but was forced to do so. The guy was just looking forward to enjoying a nice day of sleep and relaxation at home, but ultimately that was all shot down. He was pressured into taking action but at least he got to escape in the end. I think what could have spiced things up here is if Mickey or Donald showed up and were experts at Skiing. Maybe have them show Goofy how to do it or something like that. I think that would have worked out pretty well.

The animation is very smooth as always. All of the scenes flow together and the animators definitely showed a lot of skill here. The scenes all transition into each other very well. Then the special is pretty quick so the pacing isn’t bad. Even if it wasn’t all that interesting for me, it’s only like 3-5 minutes so it’s not as if you’re spending an hour here or anything like that.

Overall, The Art of Skiing can’t quite keep up with the other Disney shorts. It didn’t help that I saw it right next to the cool Donald one about Hockey. My favorite tutorial is probably still the Basketball one although Football was close. I think there’s just less to poke fun at with Skiing so that hurts in a parody tutorial setting. This one actually may have played it straight in comparison with the joke just being that Goofy wasn’t very good at it. If you want to watch a quick short about Goofy then this is a fun one to check out. Otherwise I would say that you’ll be better off watching almost any other Disney short.

The Hockey Champ Review

I’ve been reviewing quite a few Hockey games lately so it’s only fitting that I review a hockey short as well right? In this one Donald gets to show why he is a pro and honestly this is why he is the best of the original Disney characters. I like his confidence and the guy does have the skills to back up his tough talk.

His nephews have decided to get into the game of ice hockey so Donald agrees to show them some moves in a practice game. He is the current Hockey champ after all. Donald quickly beats the nephews and makes the game look easy but they aren’t too happy about that. They go for a rematch but this time Donald will be blindfolded. Can he still win?

The special is only a few minutes long of course so in describing the plot I’ve already described most of the special. Still, it’s a very fun one and one of the better Disney shorts if you ask me. It can still be hard to understand Donald at times but that’s when Disney’s striking animation comes into play. The characters are always so expressive that you can still get the meaning behind what they are saying at all times. Donald isn’t playing and while he rarely ever gets to have a happy ending, at least he always puts in a good effort no matter what.

The best scene of the special is definitely when Donald finally scores the goal and then multiplies the score by punching it back into the net over and over again. Now that’s some good style! He basically upgraded the game into something more like boxing which takes a lot of creativity. The nephews are reasonable as well of course. They realize that they are outmatched so they quickly decide to use some tricks to win. Anything clearly goes in this kind of battle so their gameplan was pretty sound. Next time Donald will certainly be ready for them though.

Overall, This was definitely one of the better Disney shorts. Donald really takes it to the next level and it’s a pretty intense one. A good chunk of the special is a fun chase scene with Donald and the nephews with the animators having a lot of fun with the effects and how crazy things can get. I do miss this retro style and bringing it back would be a good idea. If you haven’t seen this one yet then I recommend changing that as soon as you can.

Mickey’s Trailer Review

It’s been a while since I’ve seen one of the old Disney shorts. The Donald ones are typically the best but the team up ones are right up there as well since who doesn’t like an ensemble cast? Mickey and Donald have enlisted the aid of Goofy to travel somewhere far away. I assume they are going somewhere to deliver supplies or something. Goofy assures them that he can get the duo there in one piece and so begins their adventure. The Trailer is rather high tech as the click of a button can transform the rooms into just about anything. Of course, this can also be dangerous as Donald finds out the hard way. You could be relaxing as you finish off your dinner only for the table to suddenly turn into a bathtub instead of vice versa. Perhaps the tech has simply gone too far in this case.

On the other hand, some tech could have been useful later on when the trailer is unlatched from the car and the heroes go flying. If they had an electronic lock perhaps they would have been okay. I think it’s safe to say that Mickey played the biggest role in causing this to happen though. He forgot that Goofy was driving the car and later on Mickey was also the one who kicked the trailer away by mistake. The heroes probably shouldn’t have made lunch so early either though so that was on them. Of course the driver would want a bite to eat as well. At least wait until a lunch break or something. Goofy didn’t ask for this and he still managed to drive them safely back to base. Now that’s what I call a top notch driver.

Mickey’s role is a little small next to the others but we do get to see his solid soccer skills in time for the Word Cup. He kicked the Corn with precision and power into the pot. Meanwhile Donald does his best to cope with this place but it’s rough since nothing seems to work right for him. Donald never gives up though. Goofy is the one to feel bad for since the whole thing is hardly his fault. After all, why would you serve breakfast when you know that the journey is still on?

The animation is smooth and consistent as Disney always was back in the day. Everything is very clear and the character models are on point. Everything moves very quickly so I can only imagine how many frames it probably took to make. A lot of effort was put into this one for sure.

Overall, This was a pretty fun special. Naturally there is only so much that you can do in a few minutes but it’s an entertaining experience. Goofy gets a happy ending which is happy for his fans since that seems to be a rather rare occurrence for him. Driving the trailer for so long is definitely tough so he earned this one. If you like the classic Disney specials or just enjoy a light hearted comedy then you’ll enjoy this one. Either way it is only an investment of a few minutes.
