The Mask Review

MV5BMTMwMTkwMzAzN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTYwMTMxMjM5._V1_

The Mask is one of those films that I had heard about, but it dropped off of the radar for me. I remember seeing it while at a cool technology store that I used to be around, but then it closed. From that short clip, it definitely looked intriguing. The plot is definitely pretty intense…but could the film stand up to the hype?

Well, this film was definitely better than I would have guessed. The main character is Stanley and things have been pretty rough for him yet. He’s known as a pretty nice guy, but things don’t tend to turn out his way. A car drives through a puddle and wrecks his attire, he also gets ripped off and has to get a new car. One day, he finds a mask in the ocean and decides to take it home. What harm could it cause anyway? After putting it on, Stanley gains super powers and he can basically bend reality to his will. Definitely a useful power to have right?

The plot isn’t all fun and games as the gangs get to business. Tina is sent to the bank as an undercover agent to help them prep for the heist that will be coming up. Is she truly evil or can Stanley help her join the side of justice!? Dorian is the main villain as he wants to get rich and defeat Niko so that he can be the biggest criminal in town. Will Niko be able to stop this guy?

That’s essentially the plot in a nutshell. The film doesn’t really need to have a deep plot since you’re mainly in it to see how The Mask can keep on trolling everyone. The film hits a lot of the high notes that many films do not reach, but the only thing keeping it down is the fact that there is a lot of romance in the film. Tina’s first scene is in slow motion for dramatic effect and Stanley’s friend isn’t very chivalrous. Tina also has to use her charms to distract the main villain and another villain also fools Stanley. There’s also every scene at the night club involving dancing and singing. It certainly could be worse and you could quickly skip those scenes to maximize your enjoyment of the film. Still, the film has more romance than I would have expected.

Aside from that, the movie was very fun. Stanley was a pretty fun protagonist for the most part, mainly because of his overacting. His lines could get intense and his facial expressions make him as much fun to watch as Agent Ward. (Agents of SHIELD) The characters are really exaggerated in this film and that helps to set the mood. The cops were pretty good in this film and they were some of the better characters out there.

The main cop suspected Stanley pretty early on and he did a good job of rounding up the villains. He may not do a very good job of keeping the prisoners, but that’s hardly his fault. His partner isn’t very smart and he keeps up the trend of the character who’s so unsmart that it’s hard to believe. Stanley’s landlord was also a pretty good character and she had a shotgun at the ready. She’s an example of how a well prepared citizen should always be.

Of course, there was one character who completely out shined all of the others. That would be Milo, Stanley’s dog. Milo knew the score from the beginning and he’s a very smart dog. He plays a mean game of Frisbee and he’s able to jump very high. He plays a critical part in the movie and I’m glad that a film finally portrayed the dog accurately. Let’s just say that Milo dominates whoever is opposing him in every scene. He’s a large part of why the film was so good. He reminds me of my dog in a lot of ways. His power, His speed, His intelligence, and many more attributes.

The best scene in the film that didn’t include Milo was the police ambush when The Mask left the park. It was intense and also good to see the cops actually looking good for once. There were dozens of them outside and they were armed to the teeth. These guys definitely weren’t messing around, but The Mask always finds a way to stop them.

The Mask is an intriguing character because his reality warping powers seem to be limitless, but everyone takes it in stride. At one point, he breaks the fourth wall and the other characters just go with it. When he utilizes super speed to rob a bank, the cops just seem mildly surprised. It may be another one of The Mask’s abilities or just something to add to the comedy. Either way, I was definitely a fan of that part so I’m glad that they added it. It gives the film another layer of fun and excitement.

Overall, this film was pretty fun. It has a nice mix of comedy and action and there is a fight in the climax so you won’t end the film on a barrel of laughs. I would definitely recommend this film and it’s a unique experience. I can almost guarantee that you haven’t seen a film quite like this. It’s how you may expect a live action looney tunes film to look. Aside from the excessive romance, there really isn’t anything that’s majorly wrong with the film. It’s solid in all areas and is a well rounded film. The final twist in the ending is pretty great and leaves room for a nice sequel. (Which they totally should have done. The character who ends up with the mask in the ending could have made for a great main character!) Remember to be on the lookout for Milo when you watch the film!

Star Wars Darth Maul Death Sentence Review

MJAN130114

Star Wars is a pretty big franchise and with (Spoiler Alert!) the new film coming out, it will be time for new fans to join the franchise. If you’re a first time reader, then this could be a good jumping on point for you. Death Sentence is a pretty good Star Wars comic and you don’t need to have a great understanding of the franchise to get what’s going on.

The comic starts off with Darth Maul and Savage as they are attacked by a group of mercenaries. They easily defeat them, but realize that someone has put a price on their heads. They’ll never be left alone when every bounty hunter will want a shot at them, so they decide to go the man who put the bounty on them and take him down. The only problem is that the Jedi will not make this easy on them. Darth Maul and Savage have a fight with the Jedi and they may have to use trickery as well as brute strength to win!

Meanwhile, the Jedi send out some diplomats to hopefully end things peacefully. They will also find out how the guy who submitted the bounty knew that Darth Maul was still alive. He was presumed to be dead after Obe Wan Kenobi took him down. Obe actually defeated half of Darth Maul, but now the villain had grown even stronger! The Jedi are tough, but without Kenobi himself…can they possibly defeat this guy? It’s times like this where they probably wish that Luke or Anakin could come to save the day. Of course, the heroes would be too powerful if all of their heroes were in one era.

The comic is very fast paced and there aren’t any scenes that drag on. We get to see Darth Maul corrupt many who may have been heroes, but his influence was too great. They believed in the myths far too much and didn’t even interpret them correctly, which didn’t turn out so well. Darth Maul was pretty impressive as always and he seemed to be virtually unstoppable. I don’t think that any of the heroes in the comic could have defeated him unless Kenobi joined the fray. Aside from Darth Vader, Darth Maul is probably the coolest Star Wars villain out there. (Granted that I haven’t seen all of them at the moment)

Savage is not even close to Darth Maul in terms of coolness and skill level. He seems to be more of a novice at fighting and he lets his emotions run wild during his fights. Since The Force is picky about such things, he can’t defeat the big shots. I can’t say that I cared for anyone in the Jedi army apart from Kenobi’s cameo. They just didn’t look very impressive and I never got around to liking any of the characters. I didn’t dislike them, but they never did anything that made me gain respect for them and rise above the standard characters of the world. (Ex: Random cop or shop owner)

Overall, this is definitely a solid way to start your Star Wars career and you can also see one of the stronger Star Wars characters take on a bunch of good guys. The Lightsaber has always been a pretty great weapon and it will continue to be in the future. It can reflect laser blasts and with The Force at their disposal, the Sith and Jedi remain vastly superior to ordinary mortals. The comic has a nice amount of action and I can’t really say that there were any negatives to it. It’s very short and makes for a nice read so I definitely recommend it.

Madden 2011 Review

madden_nfl_11_esrb_ps3

All right, I’ve been on a Madden roll lately! Madden 10 was definitely one of the weaker additions to the franchise, but Madden 2012 was one of the best ones that I’ve played in a while. I figured that Madden 2011 was the bridge between the two games and I’m happy to say that I was right. It’s a solid game that was much better than 2010, but not quite at 2012’s level.

The gameplay speed is decently good. There is no longer a button to sprint with so the game is all about tactical awareness. You want to make sure that you know where you are going and that you have great reflexes at the ready. Running the ball works pretty well with this new style and it’s definitely a blast to try and out think the defender. Stiff arms work to an extent, but you must time them well and it’s still a matter of chance. I don’t typically any other techniques as I barrel into the opponent for epic yardage.

Passing the ball is one area where this game made dramatic improvements. When you throw a bullet pass, you can definitely tell that you’re throwing it with a lot of speed. The throws are very quick so it’s harder for the defender to jump in front and grab the ball before your frozen player can catch it. Throwing long balls is still pretty tricky as the defender has all of the time in the world to grab an easy pick. If your guy is wide open then you’ll be okay, but otherwise I don’t recommend the deep bombs.

For once, I can also mention that the defense has improved. I’ve been fine with playing defense in all of the Madden games and I typically aim for sacks. In this game, you can finally go for interceptions as it’s a lot easier than usual. It can still be tough and your player may not always do what you want him to do, but it’s fun to try.

One criticism about the defense would be the tackling aspect. When you’re going for a sack and try for a quick dive, you player will just fall on his face. The “dive” barely covers any distance and your player will be walking with the amazing speed of lead. In this game, you’re much better off trying to just barrel into your opponent and maybe even get a fumble out of it.

Oh yes! I have to mention the new Fumble Battles! I really do not like these and they’re just not that fun. When a player fumbles, you have the chance to get it back by hitting the required buttons a lot of times and beat the computer. The computer is really good at this and will typically win. I just don’t like that this occurs for just about all fumbles. Not every fumble should be a big battle. I also think that it could have been handled in a much better way.

Punting and kicking are pretty good as well. The meter simplifies things and makes it easy enough to kick a nice field goal. I like to go for it on 4th downs, but if it’s a serious game then I definitely want to be prepared to go for the game winning field goal. One tip that I would give is to make sure that the Accel clock is off. It takes the fun out of parts of the game since it skips seconds for you.

Animation and graphic wise, this game is about the same as the others. Either you’re a fan of it or you’ll think that it looks dated. I’ve enjoyed the animation for all of the Madden games since 2002 so I’d say that this one definitely looks good. There are definitely more animations to sift through before a game, but if you stick around and watch them, the game becomes even more realistic.

Overall, this is definitely a solid football game. It’s easily one of the better Madden games and for the most part, I’d say that the game got everything right. It’s a game that will keep you entertained for dozens and dozens of hours and you’ll never run out of things to do. The franchise mode looks as sleek as ever and you’ll feel like you’re in a real season! I’d highly recommend buying this Madden or going for 2012. Either way, you’re in for some epic football action!

Wonder Woman Rumble in the Rainforest Review

9781434219923

This is the first Wonder Woman book that I’ve read from the DC novel series and unfortunately, I can’t say that it had a great start. The book has several villains and the threat is very real as our hero(s?) head out to fight one of the toughest mechs alive! How could this book not epicly succeed!?

The plot involves Wonder Woman as she sees a suspicious character and quickly realizes that the wildlife is in danger. The book goes into more detail so that this whole thing makes sense, but all that you need to know is that she’s after the villain. He’s a rich person who is basically protected by society since nobody can prove that he’s guilty. Well, Wonder Woman’s going to find some evidence and take him to prison! Things take an unexpected twist when she sees Gorilla Grodd and Poison Ivy duking it out. Can she defeat both of them or win them over to her side to fight the rich guy and his powerful mech?

The plot technically sounds exciting, but I don’t care for Gorilla Grodd and Poison Ivy. They’re hardly my favorite villains and their abilities are nothing special either. Wonder Woman should realistically be able to beat them with one punch and then take out the mecha with one punch as well. Unfortunately, that is not exactly how the fight went down.

It’s hard to explain why the book wasn’t so fun. It lacked the enjoyment that the other DC novels bring to the table and there were no real fight scenes. The Giant Mecha shouldn’t have been able to give her a decent fight and he’s just soooo slow. The ending was also extremely cheesy. I don’t think that Wonder Woman was written very well. None of the characters were written very well, but Wonder Woman stood out. It’s hard to explain why she was written badly, but she just didn’t feel like Wonder Woman to me. It was almost like she was in her Diana Prince personality for the entire story.

Overall, this is definitely not the DC novel that I would recommend for you. It may have had heart and emotion, but it wasn’t well done. I’m sure that the next one will improve this as the villains were the main problem. That being said, the writing also needs to improve for the next novel. If you want to see some cool superhero action, I recommend Superman Brainiac Attacks.

Lego Marvel Superheroes Review

3max

Lego Marvel got a lot of hype when the release date drew near. DC has owned the Lego side of things for a long time and Marvel was finally ready to take what was rightfully theirs! This game would have over 100 characters and have a plot which would feature many well known heroes and villains. Was it a success!?

Well, the Story Mode has 14 levels. Each level has a final boss, but they also tend to have one (or more) other bosses before that point. Each level focuses on a different group of heroes (Some appear more than once, but it’s understandable since they’re so popular) and they go to challenge the villain. Spiderman ends up saving the heroes quite a few times.

The plot revolves around the fact that Loki has assembled a powerful villain group and they’re looking to get the Cosmic Bricks. Along the way, the Tesseract also gets involved and the Avengers must reclaim it. The plot starts off as being pretty Avengers centered, but don’t worry, The Xmen come to help as well. They get their own plot once the Tesseract is in their area and they’re forced to deal with the Juggernaut. It was good to see Cyclops back in action since it’s been so long and it was a very nostalgic experience. We don’t want to forget the Fantastic Four either and Mr Fantastic gets a decent role. The Thing tries to say his catchphrase a lot, but it may be tougher than he thinks.

The game is largely inspired by the MCU for the Avengers cast so it was especially interesting to see how they interacted with guys like Spiderman and the Xmen. Agent Coulson is pretty good in the game and he always seems to be on alert. Nick Fury is constantly sipping from his giant cup of soda (I assume that it is soda) and he’s always throwing the cup around, which is where Coulson comes in. Maria Hill also has a tendency to drop her cup as well, so Shield definitely shouldn’t be around fragile objects.

The ending of the game is pretty intense and you’ll want to stick around for the sequel. The sequel probably won’t be out for a while, but you can definitely keep busy in this game. Lego Marvel has a very large amount of replay value and there are so many things that you can do. The hub world is pretty huge and there are loads of side missions (The races are epic) and things that you can do to have fun. Once you are aboard the Hellicarrier, you can also access the shop for characters and other cool things. You can head to Deadpool’s room and read some comics, or you can even make your own character. With all of the characters around, I don’t think that you’ll need to make anyone, but it can be fun to see yourself fighting super villains.

After beating all of the levels the first time, you can go back to rescue Stan Lee and collect all of the collectibles. If you don’t want to use the same characters, you can bring anyone that you want. From Thanos to Galactus to Agent Coulson, the game’s made sure to give you a very solid arsenal of characters. Each character has a specific type which enables him/her to break certain kinds of blocks or use their powers to the fullest. You’ll want to find the right combinations to get everything right on the first go.

The comedy isn’t bad either. The characters are used for comedy, but you should be prepared for that if you’re buying a lego game. Captain America gets a lot of good lines and while the villains may not come across as smoothly, they do their best. The animation is lego centered so it’s not going to look like Mario Galaxy 2, but the facial expressions are pretty fun. Iron Man and Nick Fury tend to have the best expressions from all of the characters. The gameplay is similar to Marvel Ultimate Alliance. There are less attacks per character, but with such a large roster, we can definitely overlook that. If you like overhead, then you’ll definitely like the gameplay a lot. Either way, you’ll enjoy flying as it is done pretty well. I still haven’t mastered the controls, but you can definitely cover a lot of ground in a very short amount of time.

This is a pretty fun game to buy. There are a ton of Marvel references to be on the lookout for and it’s a nice way to get to know the universe. My only warning would be that the game does have some glitches (Getting stuck in between a wall and a bush for example) but you can always exit and come back later. If you’re in two player mode, then you can just have the second player blow you up which will sometimes end the glitch. As I mentioned earlier, there is a lot of replay value so this game should last you a long time. You definitely get your money’s worth with this purchase and I’m sure that you’ll enjoy the game.

Lego Marvel Superheroes Maximum Overload Review

title

Lego Marvel was such a success for the video game industry that they brought it back in time for an animated short. It is split up into 5 episodes and the plot is pretty similar to the game. Will the Heroes be able to unite and take the villains down or will they fall against the onslaught of powerful villains!?

Loki seems to be pretty bored and he wants to start wrecking some havok in the city. That’s when he gets a neat idea on how to make things tough on the heroes. He uses the Cosmic Snowballs (Well, that’s how they look anyway) to amp up the powers of the super villains. He uses it on Doctor Octopus and it’s up to Spider man! Along the way, Loki also amps up the Mandarin, Venom, and more.

Spiderman gets a pretty big role and he’s the main reason why Loki doesn’t end up causing major damage to the area. With his quick thinking and fast moving puns, Spiderman is able to completely overwhelm Doctor Octopus and Venom. They’re tough, but just not tough enough to take on Spiderman. Spiderman is portrayed pretty accurately in this special, but some people may wonder about the New Jersey reference. Lately Spiderman’s been taking a lot of shots at New Jersey in the animated universe. (Just check out Ultimate Spiderman) It’s all in good fun, but you do have to wonder why Spiderman always takes a shot at that state in particular.

Other heroes appear as well including Ironman. Ironman gets a decent sized role as well and it’s up to him to stop the Mandarin. He gets most of the epic facial expressions and is never fazed by all who stand in his way. The Falcon gets a cameo which will have to satisfy his fans for now. Thor and Hulk also arrive for battle as the Hulk takes on Abomination and Thor leads two of the other heroes to Loki for the ultimate battle.

It’s an entertaining short. Everyone is used for comedy, but the lines can be pretty good for some of the jokes. Spiderman is portrayed more accurately in the short than in his own show which is very ironic. It’s only around 15 minutes not counting the theme songs, so you’ll be done with the special in no time. Considering that the animation was lego related, it had some decent fights..for lego. I’d recommend this to big Marvel fans and people who just want to watch a happy video.

Thor The Dark World Review

thor the dark world poster

The Marvel Universe keeps on adding new films to the roster and this is the latest addition to the franchise. The original Thor was a good movie, but it definitely had a lot of mistakes that needed to be corrected. A lack of fight scenes is definitely the major problem that I had with the film as it was mostly a comedy. That being said, S.H.E.I.L.D. got a much bigger role in that one as they are basically nonexistent in this film. The Dark World improves upon the original film and even shows us glimpses of hope that the MCU can rise to the Man of Steel’s level of greatness.

All right, I’ll do my best to avoid obvious spoilers, but some may slip out. What’s happening to Jane Foster? Well, I’d call that part of the basic plot so I don’t count it as a spoiler. If you do, then just make sure to skip some of the lines here and there. Thor is busy spreading peace across the nine realms and the film starts out with him finishing up on one of the worlds.

All right….I’m afraid that I’m going to have to bring up one of the negatives about the film early on. In this scene, Thor is fighting grunt level opponents along with Lady Sif and the Warriors Three. They’re doing pretty badly considering that Thor should be able to take these guys down effortlessly and without help. Things didn’t get sketchy until one of the minions nearly destroys Thor with a spear through the head. Lady Sif has to save Thor and it makes you wonder why the MCU has decided to make Thor and the Asgardians so weak.

I can understand why the Asgardians lack power as they are basically humans with some decent weapons. On the other hand, Thor should definitely not be an average mortal in terms of stats, but he appears to be for some of them. Thor’s defense is not great and while he can endure a lot of blows, his skin is only as hard as an average human’s. This means that any sort of dagger, knife, or spear can potentially destroy him in one shot thanks to the old beheading or limb loss treatment. That is a critical weakness as it means that a human could feasibly defeat Thor. If someone’s a master of martial arts, it would be a simple matter to stab Thor and end things in an instant. People may have scoffed at the thought of Batman defeating Thor in the comics, but it would appear to be very feasible in the movies.
Thor-2_2709663b
Thor’s speed is definitely not impressive as well and he completely relies on the hammer. Without the hammer, Thor does not seem capable of using lightning, flying, and even his strength is not quite as impressive. This doesn’t bode well for Thor and it really shows during his later fights. Before I go into that, let’s head back to the plot.

After Thor has restored peace, he heads to Heimdall to find out about Jane Foster, but she is not on Earth anymore! Thor quickly finds her, but Jane has already absorbed the powers of the Aether. Now, she is a very powerful being who could possibly take Thor down in a fight as her powers increase exponentially. Unfortunately, this is a missed opportunity as she doesn’t use her powers to fight. Thor needs to cure Jane before the power consumes her while dealing with the coming threat of the Dark Elves, who wish to return the universe to darkness!

I’m going to finish my criticisms of Thor before I go into the other negatives and pros since I already started. Thor is very confident in the film, but he seriously cannot back up half of the things that he says. At one point, Thor mentions how he thought that Malekith would hit harder. This would be a great line if Thor had just shrugged off his attack or had been winning, but he says this after Malekith has been effortlessly pummeling Thor into the ground with his attacks. Thor hadn’t landed any hits at this point in the fight so it’s basically empty words. It’s a problem that I have with a lot of the MCU films since they talk very tough and just can’t back it up.

I’m afraid that it’s not over as there were a few more scenes that made me cringe. I should mention that this was a solid film, but as it’s one of the more anticipated films of the year and I just saw it, the scenes are still fresh in my mind. Thor ends up fighting the Kursed and the battle does not go as you may have guessed. Kursed completely annihilates Thor and the latter does not even land one hit. He was completely helpless against Kurse’s (Kurse or Kursed, it’s cool either way. If you want a third name, he also goes by the title of Algrim) attacks and it was the most lopsided fight that I’ve seen in the MCU. Kurse was faster, stronger, more durable, and superior to Thor in every single way during their fight. The MCU has consistently hinted that Thor is not as strong as the Hulk and this film basically cements that fact as Hulk would have put up a much better fight and maybe even have won the battle.

Finally, I’ve got to mention another pair of complaints for Thor. During one scene where a character dies, Thor does not enter into “Rage Mode” or even get ready for some revenge. I was hoping for a Goku transformation after Krillin’s big moment, Naruto’s rage after Haku took Sasuke down, Luffy’s rage after Arlong made Nami cry, Tsuna’s rage after Byakuran terminated his friend, or at least something! Instead, Thor shows no emotion as he fights with Malekith and still has a smile on his face for most of the battle. It’s as if he completely forgot what Malekith did just minutes ago. It definitely did not make Thor look like a likable character.
Thor-The-Dark-World-Malekith
Which brings me to the final point that needs to be mentioned…Thor murders someone for virtually no reason. Sure, it’s a big fight and all, but Thor ends up destroying a random minion for no good reason. Remember the Man of Steel’s ending? Thor does that to one of the villains and it was a very merciless scene. In retrospect, I have to say that Thor was a much better character in the first film and I didn’t like him in this one. I can only hope that he looks a lot better/tougher in the next film.

All right, that’s enough ranting about Thor. Let’s talk about Loki. He was a pretty solid character in this film and while his true self in the prison was pretty disturbing, he quickly pulled himself together. He mostly treats everything as a big joke, but he gets ready when the going gets tough. He’s still not the greatest hand to hand combatant, but when you’ve got illusions on your side, who can stop you? There was one scene with Loki that was nearly a negative due to plot hax, but I had a change of heart by the end of the film. Many people said that Loki was the best character in the film and while I can’t agree to that, I will say that he was the best hero Protagonist in the film.

Lady Sif and the Warriors Three get a very small role. I still do not like the Warriors Three anymore than usual. Lady Sif was also pretty cool as per usual and at least she didn’t try to get Thor to break his code of honor. That would have been annoying, but only Odin pulled a stunt like that in this film. Lady Sif was cool about the whole thing and got some nice threats in as well. The after credits erm….her final scene is a little tricky. It questions whether or not she’s a hero, but she’s an Asgardian…so she probably isn’t. She was raised to their customs and probably does not know the folly of her ways.

Odin….I almost don’t want to talk about him. There’s nothing nice to say about him at any rate and he was a bad character. He’s a King, but he does the worst possible job in ruling and he makes so many tactical mistakes. When you’ve got an all powerful object, you should try to keep it somewhere safe…like in the vault. I don’t see the logic to giving something like that to an obviously evil shady character who’s evil intent is basically spilling off of the screen. Like Thor, Odin doesn’t show much emotion after the big scene and he basically vanishes for the majority of the film. He didn’t look particularly impressive and if someone tries to compliment him, Odin will quickly make you regret it. Honestly, I’m surprised that Asgard is still standing! Frigga is much better than Odin in this film and she completely overshadows him. She has a pretty solid fight of her own and we learn that she is adept with a lightsaber sword. Heimdall looks pretty bad and he had one scene that was supposed to be cool, but I could not take it seriously as I knew that it was doomed to fail.

This review is getting awfully long, so I’d better wrap things up. Let’s talk about the humans….oh boy. Well, Jane Foster is still around and she hasn’t gotten any better from the first film. She basically messes up someone’s day by tricking him into thinking that he had a chance. She had one good scene where she lands a solid hit on Loki, but that’s her only good scene. She has great powers for the majority of the film, but then she doesn’t even use them. She is an improvement over her friends which counts for something I suppose. Her friends are just bad…there’s not much more to say about them. They are really hard to watch when they’re on screen. Eric talks a good game, but he also looks really bad and has some very pointless scenes. If they had cut out the human characters, then the film would have been that much better.

How about the villains? Malekith is basically your average villain who wants to plunge the world into darkness because he is evil. He serves as a villain who needs to be defeated, but don’t be expecting any huge character development. Without his enhancements, Malekith is not able to beat a non combatant…which is definitely not good for him.

Kurse steals the show in the villain department. As mentioned earlier, he wipes the floor with Thor in the film and he proceeds to defeat everyone in his way. He’s not a mindless brute and he fights with strategy and finesse. It would be great to see him appear again in a future film or at least another Kurse with a different host. I would like to see how Thanos or the Hulk would fare against such a fighter.

The minions were pretty tough, but could they surpass the frost minions? Well, they had much better weapons, but physically they are about the same. They’ve got compacted gravity grenades and laser blasters. The Asgardians were basically defenseless against them, but they have cool weapons of their own. In this film, Asgardians strike with blades that emit energy or thunder and it makes the fight scenes a lot cooler. The problem with this is that you’ll wonder why they didn’t have such tech in the first film. In the flashback that takes place ages ago, they had the swords soooo…it really can’t be explained away.
thor-the-dark-world-teaser-trailer-screenshot-thor
The final fight scene may also come as a disappointment. Don’t get me wrong, it was still better than some of the other MCU finishing fights like The Avengers, but it was a lot worse than I thought it would be. The fight was way too gimmicky and Thor wasn’t actually fighting half of the time. He and Malekith would fall through portal after portal after portal and it was actually played for laughs several times as they ran away from giant monsters and fell from a building. The latter scene was definitely made for laughs as they panicked and the whole scene was just sad. It makes them both look so weak and unprofessional. The minions also suffer from this during the climax as they trip, get beaten by humans, and make a lot of mistakes. Also, I should mention that Thor is not the one who defeats Malekith in the end. Most of the damage is not really done by him either, but from the help of allies. I won’t say who lands the final hit on him, but it may not be very satisfying.

I should also mention that SHIELD (Forget the periods!) is absent yet again. So, they’re too busy to help rescue the President of the United States in Iron Man 3 and they can’t be bothered to stop an Alien Invasion in London. They better be extremely busy or else this is just not going to make any sense. I doubt that we’ll get a legitimate reason in Captain America, but it’s all right since we know that there are limits to how many actors they can keep bringing back for every film. It’s one of those plot developments that you just need to ignore for the greater good.

All right, I should mention some of the positives because there are a lot as well. (Hence the positive score) The banter between Thor and Loki is pretty good with Loki’s impersonations being a pretty good scene. He picks one character that many may recognize. The fight scenes are much better than then previous films and the speed has definitely picked up. The space invasion scenes were also a lot of fun to watch and the prison break was also very exciting. We had the best villain of the MCU in Kurse and Thor’s intro is always cool. That lightning flash never gets old and it definitely fills you with a sense that something epic is about to begin.

The graphics can be very good and the energy scenes are realistic as well. The film is around 2 hours and while it definitely could have been longer, I can safely say that the film never dragged on. There were never moments where I was hoping that the film would end or scenes where I started to zone out. The film is fast paced and something is always happening…even if it’s not a great something. The fact that the Asgardians and Dark Elves both had very cool tech was great since it made every battle good. Even battles between unnamed foot soldiers were fun to watch for the effects. The film also had a very good soundtrack and I dare say that it may be the best soundtrack in a Marvel film. (Ghost Rider had a great one as well, so it is a close call) There’s a solid opera type music in the film and it plays during the end credits as well so you are given a chance to hear it again.

The ending definitely leaves a lot of room for a sequel and future plots. You may want to stay past the credits, but if you didn’t like the teaser at the end of Avengers, maybe the scenes just aren’t your cup of tea. This film is currently the second best MCU film, but it still has a lot to learn from the experts over at DC. Man of Steel is a superhero film that was virtually perfect and they should start to pick up the fight scenes from that film. Thor seriously needs to look better in the next film and they also need to dial down the unnecessary romance. Jane had her romance plot here which was unneeded and a little boring while her friend also got a subplot that was the most rushed romance ever. It made Thor and Jane’s look developed. It was really just there to stretch out the film and add a few more minutes, but it didn’t help the overall performance. There was a very huge plot hole that is impossible to not notice involving the fact that the holes in space open up from time to time and nobody ever notices. I can’t go into detail without going into the plot too deeply, but needless to say…people should know about these portals that are on Earth. There is no way that people wouldn’t have found out by this time. I do recommend this film to all superhero fans and to people who like to see some action. This is a step in the right direction for the MCU and we’ll see if Captain America: The Winter Soldier can continue like this film or turn out like Iron Man 3.

We Were There Review

230px-We_Were_There

We Were There is a pretty big romance series that was featured in manga format. The fact that I’m reviewing a romance manga means that I may have finally gone over to the other side…or this is going to be a preeeeetty negative review. Either way you should take note that I’m not a fan of the romance genre, so while the manga may sound bad in my review, you may still like it. It all depends on how much you like romance and drama.

All right…this is one of those manga series where it’s a little hard to talk about the plot without spoiling it as well since they connect to each other. Well, I’ll give it my best shot and divide the series into two parts. The first past of the series is about Nanami and how she becomes friends with Yano. At first Yano is rude to her, but eventually she gets him to start being a better person. It’s very emotional and the arc has a pretty intense ending. Honestly, if the series had ended there, it would definitely have had a much better ending.

Arc 2 is arguably still about Nanami, but she has to share her screen time a whole lot. We get some new characters like Sengenji who get their own mini plots inside of the real plot. The “real” plot is very intricate, but I’ll at least mention some of the parts of the plot. Nanami is trying to cope with the realizations that come from the first arc, but now one of her friends is trying a little too hard to be friendly. Will she have to tell him the sad facts of life? Yano is a mystery at this point and the volumes all keep hinting at what may have happened to him….what did happen to him!? Sengenji got the title of “Beauty and Brains” which was pretty cool for her at first, but it got annoying after a while. Can she stop someone from calling her this?

So, there’s the plot in a nutshell. It really is in a nutshell this time because I didn’t mention many of the numerous plot twists or subplots that are in the manga. There are certainly a lot of them, so you need to always keeps a sharp eye and have a lot of caffeine so that you don’t fall asleep while reading! It’s not that the series is boring, but the fact that there is so much romance!

All right, this is a romance series so should I expect any less? Well, I do expect the manga to balance romance with plot, but this series goes a little too far. You can rarely go a single chapter without some kind of romantic plot advancing. One of the only characters who isn’t affected by this is the dog and he’s the best character of the series!

Artwise, the series is decently good. It’s not going to win any awards on my watch, but it’s good enough. The panels are clear and you understand what is happening, but there aren’t any big fight scenes to test the artist’s ability. The series nearly lasted for 20 volumes which would have been impressive since that’s something that shonen series tend to do. (And Skipbeat)

Let’s go into the characters, although you can likely already tell that I don’t like any of them. Nanami is the protagonist and while she may be a nice kid, she ends up hanging with the wrong crowd. She could have been a great person and gone on to revolutionize the editing world, but Yano and the others dragged her down to their level. It was a never ending cycle where they would hurt her feelings and then she would hurt them back. It just wouldn’t stop and that should have been a sign for her to get away from them.

Yano is one of the other main characters and he’s pretty awful. Yano is definitely not a great character and he makes more mistakes than I can count. Some of them are completely unacceptable and show why he’s not a very honorable person. If we placed him in a manga like Yugioh, he wouldn’t last a minute! We’ve also got Takeuchi and he’s not very good either. Granted that he’s better than Yano, but not by much. He nearly wrecks his friendship with one of the characters and he was very pushy throughout the whole series. He should really know that he has no chance and he should just stick to having fun at his job. He’s definitely a lot nobler than Yano, but again….that’s not saying much.

Yuri is another one of those characters who seems to be here for the sole purpose of dragging other characters down for the count. Yuri manages to take on several characters throughout the series and she never really has any good reasons. She gets a sob story like the other characters, but it’s hard to sympathize with her decisions. She is one of those characters who never really got better as the series progressed. We’ve also got Nana who gets so many plot twists through the series that it’ll make you take a step back. What’s the true story behind her actions!?

There are other characters around, but you get the idea of the series. The characters are all pretty negative and not people that you would want to be around in the real world or even on the wired! So, the manga series doesn’t go so well because of the abundance of romance, lack of action, bad characters, and the fact that there aren’t any things that you can take interest in.

Overall, this definitely wasn’t my kind of manga. You can probably tell already since a manga review with 10+ volumes will usually be a lot longer than a mere 1K words. That being said, if you are a romance fan then you’ll possibly like it. It depends if you will end up minding the destruction, drama, and sad things that end up happening to the main characters all the time. Personally, I would not recommend this manga and would instead point you over to Tsubasa. It’s the closest thing to a romance that I would highly recommend at this point unless you count Bleach.

The Sixth Sense Review

The_sixth_sense

The Sixth Sense is a film where the title should tell you what to expect. This film deals with the supernatural and it’s up to the main characters to stop them. This film is decently well known and I’m sure that you’ve heard about it at some point in your life. If not…well, it’s not like it’s the end of the world…I hope.

The main character of the film is (arguably) Malcolm. The kid who goes by the name of Cole is also very important to the story, but I never cared for the character. More on that later, but it’s time to get into the plot. Malcolm has always helped people get through their problems by having a nice chat and then slowly getting them ready to solve their challenges. After one kid went off the deep end, Malcolm must now redeem himself by helping another kid.

Cole is having a lot of problems right now, so he’ll be a prime candidate for Malcolm. Cole is considered an outsider by the other kids and he’s pretty withdrawn and keeps to himself. Can Malcolm get this kid to become one with society and break through the barriers that keep him from the rest of the world? A better question might be….does he really want to be with the rest of the world? The other kids are pretty mean and petty after all.

That’s basically the plot of the movie and while it’s pretty simple, that gives the film more time for character development. I didn’t like Cole, but let’s go into the history of that. I’ve never really cared for kid characters when it comes to live action films. They’re just not as sympathetic and I only like them in anime or cartoons. Cole was no exception and he could have been higher if he had taken the fight to the undead, but he decides to save the world instead. (In a way) The ghosts were definitely malicious enough to warrant a counter offensive.

Let’s talk about Malcolm. He’s a pretty solid character and he definitely seems to know his stuff. He nearly defeats the kid in their first battle of wits and he always seems to know what to say. He has to help the kid while also worrying about personal issues of his own. It’s tricky, but Malcolm does what he needs too. He may not be the strongest fighter out there, but at least Cole has someone who can defend him if need be. One of Malcolm’s enemies is the part time worker at the ring shop, but let’s just say that he’s no match for Malcolm.

They were really the only two big characters. The Mom and Wife (Separate characters) are both decent characters in their own right, but they don’t get to appear a whole lot so we can’t totally judge them. We can judge the Mom depending on the aftereffects of the Dungeon game, but the film ends before that. If the kids are still walking with Cole, then we’ve got a problem.

There were some plot hax in the film, but nothing completely devastating. One that would come to mind is the final plot twist. I don’t plan on spoiling that in the review, so you’ll need to check it out. That being said, it’s hard to believe that someone did not notice this twist until the very end. There should have been many things that would not make sense to the character prior to the ending. Well, let’s not dwell on it I suppose…

Overall, this was a decent “horror” film. Cole isn’t very good, but Malcolm is a solid character. There’s no soundtrack to speak of and a very small cast overall. If you want a scare, then this isn’t the film for you. It’s more of an emotional story that happens to feature the supernatural. There may be some gross or scary moments in the film, but nothing that will scare you for life. On the other hand, the film is pretty uneventful and some may find it a little boring. Watch at your own risk I suppose. As long as you like the kid and the plot, you should enjoy it.

Showcase Presents Superman Team Ups Volume 2 Review

9781401240486_p0_v2_s260x420

Superman has always been the world’s greatest superhero and this comic collection really proves that point. The Showcase brings a lot of Superman comics and we get to see if he’s a team player or not. If you know Superman, then you’ve probably already figured out the answer to that question. Regardless, it’s a really fun read and it’s worth every dollar that you used to buy it! (Unless you check it out at your local library)

There are a whole bunch of comics in this collection so I won’t go in detail about all of the various plots, but I will make sure to cover a lot of them. Let’s start off with some of the Mongul issues as those always had the best fight scenes. Usually we try to save the best comics for last, but I’m going to flip that around and talk about some of the best ones first!

In one comic, Mongul has appeared and he takes Superman’s friends hostage. Superman doesn’t like this, but unless he does what Mongul wants…they may not make it out alive. Superman is forced to fight with the Martian Manhunter to get the device that Mongul wants. Martian Manhunter is a good fighter, but we can agree that he’s no match for Superman. It’s a nice fight and Superman is doing his best not too badly injure the guy.

Supergirl comes to help during the next part of the arc and the two of them fight against War World! I don’t really buy most of what happens, since they should be able to run rings around such an object. None of the weapons on board should really be able to do a thing against the Kryptonians.

Things get really dicey when the Spectre stands against an enraged Superman. While the Spectre is pretty powerful in the DC world, I think we both know who’s going to come out on top. Superman is the greatest comic book character and I do mean that literally. No other fighter can hope to defeat him in battle.

Mongul isn’t the type to give up and he has another arc where he has allied with the Sun Eater. He’s ready to destroy the world, but we’re not going down without a fight. Superman is trapped in a cube, (Classic plot hax. Make an indestructible object and trap Superman in it. Only problem is that I don’t buy it) so it’s up to the Justice League and the Legion of Superheroes to save the day. One of the only problems with the issue is the fact that the Legionnaires are implied to be far superior to the Justice League. Did they forget that Green Lantern is a member? The Legionnaires are definitely powerful, but let’s keep it real folks. The Justice League are the best! (Especially considering that Wonder Woman and Supergirl were both around at the time. The 3 bigshots are all they need…and that’s not even counting Batman!)

Mongul is definitely impressive and aside from fighting all of these guys, he still has Superman to contend with. He’s definitely a resilient fighter and he is easily one of Superman’s strongest opponents. He had yet another appearance during the Starman team up. Once again, Superman is forced to take the Titan on while Starman takes on his safer task. Mongul puts up a pretty bold fight and the comic hints that he may be able to defeat Superman. While I wouldn’t go that far, he makes for an excellent villain.

All right, let’s talk about some of the comics that don’t feature Mongul. Black Adam is the main villain of one of the comics and he is ready to give Superman a big fight. Shazam is in his own world and he doesn’t realize what is going on, so it’s up to Superman! Superman is virtually invincible, but Black Adam possesses a similar degree of power so it won’t be an easy battle. Superman explains that the battle will last a very long time and it could definitely be hard to minimize the damage. The battle is pretty intense and you need to remember that Black Adam is a very powerful opponent and he can give Superman a good battle.

We also have an issue where Shazam and Superman have switched powers/costumes and they must now team up against King Kull. It’s a pretty intense issue and while you may not agree with everything that happens, it makes for a solid fight. Superman never gives up and this issue proves that he’s a dedicated hero.

Superman also teams up with Plasticman in one of the issues. Plasticman’s sidekick is definitely a solid character and he takes things into his own hands during the ending. While you may find it hard to believe that ordinary joes can take Superman down, it certainly adds an element of danger. This occurs again during a Metamorpho team up, where Superman is nearly taken down for good after a single energy blast.

Superman had an interesting comic where he split apart from Clark Kent. When they’re separated, Superman quickly starts to turn towards the dark side. Can Clark get him back on track before all is lost? Kent has bigger problems to worry about as well, when he has to take on the Atomic Skull without his powers!

Finally, I need to mention one of the highlights of the whole collection, Superman’s epic battle against He Man! He Man is known as one of the strongest guys out there and you really can’t disagree. Many have speculated that Superman could defeat him in a fight and I wouldn’t disagree with that either. Unfortunately, Superman looks like a rookie for most of the comic, but he still gets his shots in. Superman’s raw power is hyped a lot in this comic as it should be, but once Skeletor takes control of him…is this the end for He Man!?

There are several other comics, like a team up with Hawkgirl, Black Canary, Manbat, Robin, etc. They were all great or at least good comics except for one team up with Wonder Woman. The plot was awful and didn’t make any sense at all. There wasn’t any rhyme or reason to the comic and it seemed to be total filler. The comic is so bad, that you’ll just want to skip it and you won’t miss anything anyway. It’s the only thing that hurts this collection, but it will go by quickly.

The art is pretty solid for the collection. It’s regrettable that it’s all in black and white, but you can still appreciate the art. Superman’s character is portrayed very accurately for the majority of the collection and his partners look good as well. The pacing is solid and the comics manage to fit in a lot of action as well as fun scenes.

Overall, this is definitely a collection that I would recommend. This is DC during the prime of their history and you can really feel the emotion that’s in every comic. Superman is definitely strong enough to hold his own and it’s also nice to see some of the more obscure comic book characters get in on the action as well. It’s a solid way to start reading comics and get a look at DC’s best superheroes!
