Battletoads in Battlemaniacs Review

It’s time to look at the Battletoads, one of the big SNES titles of legend! This game is known for being super tough and after playing through I can definitely confirm this. The levels absolutely go hard and in particular the second last level is insane. That one took me tons of tries and you gotta appreciate how anyone was able to do it back in the day. You do get a good amount of continues but it’s not unlimited or it didn’t seem that way. Imagine getting a full game over and going to the start? Would be brutal unless I’m mistaken there.

The basic plot involves a girl getting kidnapped and even one of the toads ends up going down for the count. The rest of them quickly get ready to save the day but they will have to take out powerful opponents and get past a lot of dangerous obstacles. It won’t be easy but hey they are ready for this. They’re no strangers to danger after all.

So the basic gameplay here is that of a 2D platformer/beat ’em up. You punch away at opponents and move forward to the goal. Some levels are standard beat em ups while others shake up the gameplay style a bit. For example one of them has you in a ship blasting away at enemies. It’s the easiest one for sure though. The beat em ups are also pretty easy for the most part at least relatively speaking. Nothing about the game is downright easy but it’s not nearly as bad as the others. Let’s talk about that toughest level.

You’re on a scooter and you have this guy on a motorcycle after you. He is trying to slice you in two and you have to stay ahead of him. It’s easily the most violent level because when you lose it really gets intense. Now the reason the level is tough is because you have to hold the control stick in the direction of the road at all times and there are a ton of twists and turns. If you are late to switch by half a second then it’s all over. The screen also doesn’t show you a full view for most of it so you have to just react very quickly. The level itself is only around 2 minutes but let me tell you that trying to not make any mistakes for 2 minutes with so many twists and turns is incredibly difficult.

It’s all about the timing and the interesting thing is that the way the momentum works, you actually get penalized for using the rewind feature because it completely stops your momentum. So you have to even time your access points just right like during a jump where you can recover really quickly. It took me so many tries but when I finally beat the level it felt really satisfying.

Then while not quite as tough, this next one was also a real doozy. This time it’s a vertical race as you are starting at the top of a tower and heading all the way down. You are chasing the villain as he runs down and you have to really move perfectly because he is faster than you. You can hit him to slow the guy down for a moment but if you miss the hit then you will have just dug an even deeper hole for yourself. So that definitely makes things tricky as well. Stay strong and just keep on going but good luck on memorizing the spots. This one didn’t take me nearly as long but was also a really crazy level.

I’ve already said this several times but the game is definitely insanely difficult and lives up to the reputation. The fact that it could be difficult with different gameplay styles like this is definitely impressive. It may make for a high barrier of entry but at least it isn’t artificial difficulty. They’re just making a fun game that is really hard but you always have a chance to win. You could argue that the two chases are the only ones that break this mold as there are obstacles you could never possibly anticipate on your first run.

The graphics look pretty good and the artstyle in general has aged pretty well. It’s definitely the kind of game that really leaps off the screen. The levels also have a whole lot of variety throughout with different backgrounds in addition to the gameplay styles. They put in a good amount of effort here without a doubt. Meanwhile the soundtrack is also good. Battletoads definitely delivers on these fronts without any real issues. Mix that in with the fun gameplay and it’s easy to see why this is a solid title.

Overall, Battletoads is a pretty fun game. I’m not sure if I would have had as much fun without the switch online enhancements but it’s definitely a game that had a good amount of effort and creativity behind it. You can see why the series definitely got so well known over the years. If you have the switch online then I would definitely recommend checking it out. It’s one of the better ones on the console.

Mega Man IV Review

My Mega Man marathon is nearly at an end now but it was definitely a really good time. Mega Man IV is the longest title in the series up to this point. There are a ton of bosses to defeat and the levels are also fairly long. Throw in the generally high level of difficulty in each stage plus the fact that there are even collectibles now and this is really a complete title.

The basic plot is that Wily and a bunch of robot masters are terrorizing the world. Mega Man himself is going to have to be called in to stop them but can even the Blue Bomber pull out the win? Hopefully he has what it takes because otherwise of course there aren’t really any other heroes at the ready. Mega Man has the unique ability to copy powers after beating opponents so that will give him a bit of a chance.

So like I said one of the new things here are the collectibles. Make sure you at least get all of the letters during the second wave of bosses or you will be unable to access the climax to fight the final levels. It would probably be pretty annoying to have to go back and replay an old level because you missed that right? The letters aren’t hidden so you don’t have to worry about not finding any but they do tend to be on the most difficult to reach paths so it will come down to how skilled you are.

As always I have to say it would probably be difficult to beat the game without the rewind feature. Like I have to imagine you would be getting stuck and losing lives constantly. Even just finding out which weapon was super effective against another one took a whole lot of trial and error. It’s definitely not as easy as in the main console games where you can usually tell right away what would be good against another boss.

In terms of structure, this is similar to the others. You fight the first 4 bosses, then there’s an interlude, then you fight 4 more, and then you enter the climax. So it all comes together pretty well. It is a bit longer like I said so you can expect this to probably take around 2 hours or so. Probably less if you are acing the levels of course so it does come down to your skill level.

In terms of the graphics, everything is all in green again of course so it doesn’t get to show off as much as you would like. The green almost starts to hurt your eyes after a while. I dare say going full black and white would be better than just having one color like this. The designs for the various robots are all good though so I’ll give the game credit there. The soundtrack is more on the forgettable side though. Not really any tunes that you will be humming here.

In general I would also recommend sticking with your mega buster as much as possible here. Yes, other weapons can help but most of the time you will be using the mega buster so you want to be fully comfortable with how it works out. You do have a charge shot now which makes it even better. Aside from the final boss where you have to break out a new weapon, you can beat the whole game with your standard buster.

This game introduces a shop which is a fun thing to have. Basically you can spend P points which is currency you get from enemy drops and then you can buy cool things like extra lives, unique powers, and energy tanks. Personally I recommend the energy tanks the most. Using them will allow you to replenish your health all the way to the top even in the middle of a level. Massively necessary for the various boss fights especially in the climax. It’s the best deal for your points.

Overall, Mega Man IV is a pretty fun game. I could do without the collectibles but at least there aren’t too many of them so you don’t have to spend the whole playthrough looking around. The various fights are all well designed and the extra length makes it stand out. So if you have the Switch Online then you should definitely check this out to help round out the collection.

Streets of Rage 2 Review

Classic beat em up titles can feel like a dime a dozen from the old days so it’s really important to have something that helps you stand out. In this game’s case I thought it would be the extra continues that come as part of the game but unfortunately they are finite which hurts the second half a bit. It’s a fun game but yeah without much of a story or anything like that, I don’t see it doing much that other games haven’t already done.

There’s barely even a story here. You have the opening cutscene and then nothing until the very end. I would have liked a little more than that. Ah well, the controls are of course fairly basic. You have your normal hits and then your power moves. The power moves deal a lot of damage but the price for using them is very high. See, every time you use a power move, it drains part of your health bar. So that’s extremely risky and I would only recommend using it if you are fully surrounded. In this game the minions actually use a lot of teamwork so being in the middle is a bad idea.

For example, there’s one enemy who will restrict your arms while the others start punching you. Others will rush in with a quick sneak attack so while you’re punching one minion, he breaks your combo and then the original one hits you. It’s actually impressive of the A.I. I’d say. So the game gets progressively harder and harder as you go through it. There are a few cheesy enemies here though. Whenever I am in the middle of a combo and the enemy activates super armor and hits me anyway…I’m a little skeptical. There’s no way to block or dodge mid combo so that means you have to eat the hit. It doesn’t really seem fair. Then your only option is to go for single aerial hits that can’t be stopped midway but it means beating the level will take forever.

So that shouldn’t be happening. The flying enemies on the jetpack are also a bit much. Your normal attacks can’t reach them so you’re always having to jump up to try and land a blow but it’s just not easy. These enemies are a bit annoying so I’d rather we stay to ground based opponents. You could also just say that the execution was a bit off since otherwise I really wouldn’t have much of a problem with these guys.

The graphics are okay. I wouldn’t say they are anything special but the game was at least trying something as opposed to phoning it in. Then the soundtrack is more on the generic side. So nothing bad but nothing to really write home about either. The game’s length is fairly short. There are 8 levels although each level is longer than the average beat em up title. You’ll have it beat in maybe 80-90 minutes or so. Add or remove time based on how good you are at the game. The initial lives lasted me all the way to level 6 but after that I had to start busting out the rewinds and everything.

There are just so many enemies and they get so good by the end. It’s hard to see how you can get past them on your own. The final boss as well since he is so fast and is always shooting bullets everywhere. He was fairly unique as you would have to get behind him but your character can’t run and is very slow. So you have to try to get to the corner early but that’s how villains end up taking you out. There’s definitely a lot of strategy here.

Overall, Streets of Rage 2 is a decent game but one that still has a big pet peeve of mine. The fact that when you lose you have to go all the way back to the beginning of the game. That’s something that I can never condone. I feel like you should be able to play through the whole title and if you get a game over, you restart from where you left off. Maybe it means that your score resets or something but give me the option to continue. There’s no way I would let myself go back to level 1 and just try to restart again without some kind of progression. So if you have the Nintendo Switch Online, give this one a quick view. It may not change your life but it’s still a fun playthrough.
