Doctor Who Review

Looks like it is time to review a Doctor Who comic! This franchise is rather huge and another one that always looked interesting. I’m sure that the shows are decent, but the comics and books are always the part of the franchise that looked particularly interesting to me. There have been many doctors over the years and this comic shows off 3 of them. The blond englishman is currently my favorite, but he doesn’t get to join the fray here. No matter, it is still a solid adventure full of fun and excitement!

One story sees the Doctor try to help his assistant after her clothing is covered in mud. His ship has a good laundry system, which can take care of the problem. The only thing that he didn’t count on was her mud turning into a monster that had a will of its own. He had to think quickly in order to dispatch this new menace to the free world! It was a true threat of epic proportions, but The Doctor finished it off pretty quickly.

This was a decent story. This Doctor seems to be a little more inexperienced than the others, but he gets the job done and he beat the mud monster easily. The art was good enough and the assistant seemed to be a good character. This duo would be able to hold their own TV show with relative ease. Nothing can stop the Doctor when he is on a roll!

Another story has the Doctor land in the year 2015 by mistake and we find out that someone is mind controlling the population through free comic books! The Doctor can’t allow this to go on and he quickly goes on the offensive. Can he really stop this alien before it is too late? The whole planet is out to get him after all so this can be fairly tricky.

This story tied in well to Free Comic Book Day and the ending is a happy one. You will almost feel bad for the alien since his writing skills really didn’t seem to be that good. Hopefully, he can get some constructive criticism now and he will be able to write some neat books. He had a huge following at one point, but mind control shouldn’t count if you really think about it. This was another fun comic and the Doctor was likable. Again, he didn’t come across as too smart though.

Finally, we had the comic where electricity wanted revenge on the humans because they were overusing it. This issue certainly felt like it was a sci-fi adventure more than the others. The stakes were a lot higher as there had been 6 casualties by the time that The Doctor entered the fray. Moreover, I liked this story a lot because The Doctor knew what he was doing this time. He didn’t back off when the government told him to stop and he knew just how to stop the threat.

The Doctor’s assistant also proved her worth as she saved the day when she crushed the switch. Having a partner is always a good thing and this certainly came in handy for The Doctor. It was very noticeable that this was only a small story in the issue though because the plot moved at breakneck speeds and some areas were glossed over. I think the issue should have been longer since the 3 different stories had to share screen time.

Overall, This Doctor Who comic was fun to read and it is still a very interesting series to learn about. I can see why it is known to be one of the greatest sci fi franchises of all time. I assume that the quality varies depending on who the Doctor is, but these three all seem to be fairly likable. The end of the issue teases at a crossover between the three of them, which would be pretty awesome. Since time travel is easy for these guys, I’m almost surprised that it is not more of a regular occurrence. The stories are fairly rushed since three have to share a single issue, but the art is consistently good and all of the stories are still fun to read. Another solid comic came out of Free Comic Book Day!

Spongebob Freestyle Funnies 2015 Review

Spongebob Squarepants is a show that I never got into when I was a kid. I will admit that the theme song was so cringe worthy for me that it eventually became catchy and I would find myself playing it over in my head. I couldn’t get over it and eventually realized that the theme song was simply too good to ignore. When I saw that a Spongebob comic was among the free ones that I got, I could barely keep my hopes from getting slightly higher than the average comedy issue. After all, Spongebob was usually fun right?

Spongebob is going Jellyfish hunting since it is the annual Jellyfish migration. Unfortunately, none of them are showing up this year. It seems like the Plankton has stolen them for his own fiendish purposes. Will Spongebob allow this to continue or will he decide to join Plankton? Either way, it sounds like he may accomplish both! This is a dark time for Spongebob and his friends.

The plot is decent and it lasts for the entire issue, which is good. A lot of comedies decide to have a cop out and contain several stories to buy themselves some time. If you can’t think of a good story that can last for the whole issue, then I’m afraid that it is game set and match. The Jellyfish hunting could have been a real problem, but luckily they make it clear on several occasions that the Jellyfish will not be harmed. The heroes make fruit punch from their stinging, but Plankton reminds us that it will not hurt the Jellyfish in any way.

You will feel bad for the Moneybags guy since he thought that people were praising his artistic talents when they were actually bashing him. I really felt bad for the guy since he clearly tried his best. It just was not enough that time. His paintings didn’t look bad either. Moneybags can be rather stuck up and he was a little mean to Spongebob so I suppose that he had practically been asking for this to happen. Ah well, at least the mean townsmen didn’t actually break all of his art. Now that would have been sad!

The art looks decently good for this comic. It is nothing amazing of course, but I applaud the effort. There are no panels that look bad and every character’s model appears to be accurate. I’d expect nothing less from Spongebob right? It is a lot more enjoyable than the other comedies. I never saw the show, but I’ve always had a good understanding of how good it was. The comic did not disappoint and lived up to my expectations.

Overall, Spongebob’s Freestyle Funnies were good. We got to see why Spongebob is the main character of legend and I think the show is still going. I know that we recently got a movie, which seemed intriguing. It’s still not quite up to snuff when compared to good ole DC and Marvel, but for what it is, it’s not bad. I’m nearing the end of my Free Comic Book marathon so it is good to see that some of the final issues still have a positive score within them.

Avatar The Last Airbender Review

All right, I’m back with another Free Comic Book! I’ve still got a few left and I’m getting to them, but library borrowed books also have to take priority since they actually have a due date! Avatar is one of those franchises that always looked interesting. I never got into it, but maybe I shall someday. Either way, Saint Seiya, Pretty Cure, and Generator Rex are a little higher for me to be honest. Avatar will just have to wait its turn for now.

The main story is about the two characters on the cover. Flip the roles that they seem to be playing on the cover and you have the comic. The one with the scowl on her face tries to cheer her friend up when she wants to quit the warriors group that she is a part of. The dancer feels like she is replaceable and it saddened when she finds out that her sisters have replaced her at the circus. Unfortunately, she has no time to worry about this as a pair of villains decide to burn the place down!

This was a decent comic. Certainly a short one since it had to make room for two other stories. I can’t say that I like either character too much from this story, but I am glad that the rock one seems to be ready for a fight at any time. She launched into the two villains and that’s what I would expect from a main character. For the dancer, I’m glad that she got over the situation, but I would have thought that she would have been happier for the sisters. It sounds like they hadn’t seen each other for years before that.

There are also two backup stories. One of them is from Plants vs Zombies and that’s the worst one of this batch. It’s terrible and I don’t use that word lightly. The zombies are unsure of how to beat the plants so the leader decides to make a plant robot to enslave the plants. He jumps into the fray as a distraction and gets beaten up by the plants along with their two human sidekicks. Meanwhile, the robot decides to turn good and helps the plants defeat his creators.

Seriously, this comic was just sad. It wanted to be really funny so we had a gag on every page and sometimes there was more than one on a page. None of them were funny though and the main reason is that the zombies aren’t interesting characters. That’s certainly a game over moment if I ever heard of one. The story had potential, but we needed to see it from the plant’s point of view since they seemed like the better characters.

Finally, we had a short comic for Bandette. She’s essentially a crook like Carmen Sandiego who likes to steal things for the thrills. She never steals anything that is too valuable, but stealing is stealing. It’s interesting to see a “hero” who is stealing from everyday people who didn’t ask for this. The comic isn’t even acting like she’s a villain or an anti hero, but it’s just how she gets her kicks. She steals a movie and some popcorn. Hmmmm….

There’s also quite a bit of plot hax in this short story. For one thing, how did she get her friends to be hired to every key position? Usher, Popcorn holder, door man, etc. That’s a lot of unbelievable moments backed into a page. Ah well, I suppose that I’ll just roll with it and the main character did beat up a few opponents along the way. It may have sounded like I didn’t like this comic, but it was actually the best of the three. It certainly has potential.

As for the art, I suppose that Bandette probably had the best looking artwork. It will remind you of an old 80’s-90’s comic and picturing Carmen Sandiego is the best way to imagine it. Plants vs Zombies had the worst art and it was very sub par. The chaotic artwork certainly didn’t do the comic any favors. Finally, Avatar’s art was decent. It was clear enough to follow the story with ease so that’s good enough for me.

Overall, This was a decent free comic book thanks to the first and last stories. The one in the middle certainly helped to drag it down to a more neutral rating. Plants vs Zombies is just not good even though the concept was so fun and inspired. Bandette is the series that I would look forward to reading more comics, but I suppose that Avatar’s would be fun as well. Bandette just seems to have the better characters at the moment. I’d recommend giving this comic a read and maybe you will find a new series to pick up on a weekly basis!

Bongo Free For All 2015 Review

Bongo is essentially a Free Comic Book tradition at this point. It is always in the lineup and you can feel confident that the stories will be decent. They are certainly better than the average comedy issues and this year’s edition wasn’t bad. The Simpsons is still not my kind of franchise, but it will always beat Family Guy.

This issue brings a few different stories, which seems to be the norm for these comics. One adventure has Homer try to repair the holes on his roof. This proves to be a fairly difficult challenge so he is forced to take some drastic measures. You will likely be able to predict the ending from the early pages of the story, but that does not take away from Homer’s great one liner at the end. He sets the other characters straight and proves that you can still be a winner even if you couldn’t succeed in the task at hand.

None of the other stories could match up to this one. Another adventure saw Homer’s kid decide to throw a spray on his classmates, which would make them all grow beards and wreck their class photos. Little did he know that this would cause his own hair to be ruined by the teachers. Never do unto others what you wouldn’t want done to yourself. It was neat that the issue actually had a moral. Teen Titans Go probably would have had fun reversing it. It is strange to see the main character go bald because I always thought that he didn’t have hair. The spikes always seemed to have just been part of his hair. This makes more sense, but it is still very odd.

Those were the best two stories, but there were certainly others like the comic con one that drag it down. I knew that the comic wasn’t going to end well and the main guy got what was coming to him. Still, the other stories just weren’t as good or exciting. The art looks about as good as I would have expected. It is still the Simpsons so you shouldn’t expect a masterpiece, but it is nice and simple. This works well for the smug expressions from the cast. You can be assured that someone will be grinning or smirking in just about every scene. Usually, it’s only temporary since something ends up happening to the heroes.

Overall, This was a good comic. The Simpsons have experience when it comes to the comedy genre so it is nice to see them do something with that. It is still a franchise that I don’t see myself ever getting into, but there was no way that a single issue could have changed my mind on that anyway. I want to see if Spongebob is able to keep up with this issue and I should find that out very quickly. I only have a handful of free comics left to read after all!

Sonic and Hedgehog and Mega Man Worlds Unite Prelude Review

It’s time for a double comic! Sonic and Mega Man seem like perfect choices for a double comic since it feels like they are always crossovering into each other’s universe. Technically, it’s only happened once, but the event was so big that it felt like more than one adventure. The thought of seeing them team up again is already epic and the fact that more guest stars will also be present is epic. Just think of it…soon, they could make this a Super Smash Bros comic! Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

The Sonic comic is where all of the action is and it’s a great issue. Sonic and Silver team up to defeat the Ifrit. It hasn’t been around since Sonic Rivals 2, but portals have been opening up across the planet, which is leading all sorts of monsters to Sonic’s home world. Silver has been tasked with closing them all, but this is far from a simple mission. The heroes dispatch Ifrit rather easily and I would expect no less from the blue blur.

Sonic’s portrayal here is dynamite and there’s also something that I was thrilled about. His design is finally back to his Sonic Adventure 2 Battle one! Now, I don’t mind the “Big Hair” Sonic depiction that you see in a lot of the Sonic Universe titles among others, but this is the best design for Sonic. It’s not even close if you ask me and Sonic really seems like a seasoned pro here. Yeah, you really can’t top this comic and Mega Man wasn’t able to keep up. After all, who can keep up with Sonic right? He may have gotten the raw end of the deal in the last crossover, but I’m sure that he’s coming back with a vengeance this time!

In Mega Man’s comic, the anti robot guy is going crazy in prison. He recently got a glimpse of the future and witnessed Mavericks destroying the city. Now he believes that he was right all along about the robots and he won’t stop until all of them are destroyed. There’s not much that he can do about it though so he must wait for an opportunity. Most of the comic is simply recapping what has happened to him over the course of the series and he has definitely had a lot of unfortunate events.

I would have liked some more Mega Man action here to be sure. It’s decent set up for the crossover of course, but considering how many interesting concepts there are in Mega Man, we could have gotten something a little more breath taking. Still, I’m looking forward to seeing Bass and Proto Man help out in the crossover and seeing Mega Man X is always a treat. I’m not crazy about the mad bomber being the big villain from the Mega Man side of things though and I would actually prefer to see the return of Dr Wily!

The art for the Sonic comic is dynamite and it really can’t be beat. Everything looks flawless and Sonic continues to prove why it is easily one of the best comics out there. The Mega Man comic’s art is solid as well and I definitely know it well from previous volumes of his series. It’s certainly no Sonic, but it gets the job done and you’ll always know what’s happening on the screen. It’s a simplistic style that allows you to focus on the action.

Overall, This was a fun double comic. Mega Man’s comic was good, but it certainly wasn’t as exciting as Sonic’s. Sonic’s had the action and scope that we’ve come to expect from the Hedgehog and Silver gets his props as a powerful telekinetic. Sonic’s inventive use of the time puns is also to be commended and he certainly never backs down even when Silver tells him to stop. Sonic’s a free spirit and this is what makes him so cool. I’m definitely hyped for the big crossover event when the Worlds Unite once more. You can bet that I’ll check it out as soon as the library snags it.

Captain Canuck #0 Review

Now, it is time to check out an independent superhero. He is not from Marvel or DC, which should make things interesting. It means that there will naturally be some similarities to established heroes, but it is almost literally impossible for that not to happen nowadays. I applaud the fact that we still get new superheroes and he isn’t even new as the character had an unpopular comic series decades ago. It simply wasn’t remembered, but this new series should change that as it is off to a good start.

The first story is only a handful of pages and nothing gets to happen, but we see Captain Canuck jump out of a plane just like Captain America did in The Avengers. The Captain seems to be an excellent character as he is no nonsense and he gets the job done. You really can’t ask for a better superhero and this is someone that we can all look up too. Of course, we haven’t had a chance to see how he deals with tricky situations, but I’m confident that he will be able to hold his own. His uniform is similar to the Alpha Flight’s standard gear and then you can throw a little Robocop into that design. It works quite well and does a good job of making Captain Canuck look intimidating.

I wasn’t crazy about the second half of the comic, but that’s because it is all about Canuck’s backstory. We get a recap of the adventures that he’s had up til now and they sound a little repetitive. This was probably unintentional, but he became a hero and then seemingly died in an explosion with the villains. It turns out that he actually escaped to the past and helped primitive humans live back during the early days of humanity. After that, he made it back to the present in time to save his planet from aliens…only to seemingly die in an explosion again. No worries, he was just flung….to the past….again. This time, he helped people while becoming a legendary hero and that’s where the backstory ends. Is it just me or did they just use the same plot twice in a row? It’s an original twist I suppose.

The art for both halves of the comic is good. I loved the art in the first half and it was the highlight of the issue for me. It reminded me of X Sanction, which I still consider to be one of the best drawn comics of all time. The second half goes for a retro feel, which works for me as well. Who doesn’t like to revisit the good ole days of comics right? The art styles certainly contrast one another, but that makes them all the more enjoyable.

The main villain seems to be a little shallow, but he doesn’t get to appear so I can only judge him from his character bio. Since the actual story was only 2-3 pages aside from the recap, we didn’t get to truly see what the characters are like. So, while the comic seems like it should be very good and a lot of fun, I would approach the trade with caution. You should always be wary when the free comic tries to hide the actual comic from you. Still, from what I saw, Captain Canuck looks like a keeper.

Overall, Marvel and DC may have found a new competitor to fight again! Captain Canuck may not be very powerful, but he can still have some fun issues as he gains battle experience and learns to fight alongside his comrades. Canada certainly needs more heroes as the United States (Particularly New York) has all of the best ones at the moment. If this guy gets really popular, that would certainly be a good thing for them. Time to read some more of the free comics that I got and then I’ll get back to reviewing. 4 down and 15 to go!

Jurassic Strike Force 5 Review

The dinosaurs are back and now they’re agents? The cover certainly looked very intense and you may get ready for some big brawls upon seeing it. Well, you should be aware of the fact that the cover is rather misleading. This seems to be more of a comedy than a serious action so the main characters never look that grim. Of course, this approach can still work if handled right.

The plot seems to be that two dinosaurs have become cops and they must take down all of the villains who interfere. There may have been some exposition, but we haven’t really learned about why things are the way that they are. If the comic is as bold as Sonic The Hedgehog, then they won’t need to worry about this. If not, they’ll likely give us some kind of origin story later on. Regardless, we don’t need backstory so long as we have an engaging plot.

The villain appears to be a parody of Cobra Commander and the other big villains from the 80’s. He seems decent so far, but I’ll have to see more of him to determine whether he has the stuffing necessary to take the win here. The main dinosaurs aren’t great so far, but we are fairly early into the series. They are decently tough and do manage to save the day, but they don’t strike you as heroes who are very prepared to fight and I have a feeling that the first big villain will be able to crush them with ease.

The art is certainly very good and it is one of the main reasons why the issue is fun. This kind of series certainly needs good art as it makes the fight scenes more fun even if they aren’t played very seriously. This issue does a decently good job of making your interested in reading the series. I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to picking up a trade if I ever saw it in the library. Like I said, it is early so I’m not sure if the actual series will be good, but I have some hopes for it.

I think that the blend of comedy and action could work for this series like it does for Sonic and Mega Man. The critical part is just making sure that the characters are likable as no series can stand up without that. I don’t really care for the two dinosaurs yet. They aren’t bad, but they just aren’t good either. I’d say that calling them generic at the moment is fair enough.

Overall, Jurassic Strike Force 5 seems like it has the potential to be a really fun comic. We’ll really just have to see where it goes and I don’t picture it being a really long running series either so they will need to introduce the rest of the cast quickly. Who is the leader of the Strike Force and why are dinosaurs needed? These questions and more should be answered, but in an interesting way and not necessarily through flashbacks. Flashbacks can be good, but they must be handled very delicately or they will destroy the pacing of the comic. On the bright side, their taste in food is quite good.

Divergence Review

All right, it’s time to look at the comics from Free Comic Book Day! I got a solid batch of 19. 15 courtesy of Midtown Comics and then an extra four over at the New York Public Library. Typically, I read the comics from worst to best, but I reversed the lineup a little this year. What better way to start than by reading about what’s to come over in DC right? I doubt that anything will beat this issue, but we shall see.

There are three stories in this comic. The first one shows us what the new Batman series will be like as Commissioner Gordon takes over the role of Batman. There are heavy spoilers for Batman #40 so I hope that you read it. I’m not sure about the new incarnation of Gordon as he looks nothing like the Commissioner that I have grown used too. He seems tougher, which could be a good thing, but I trust him less than the older version. I don’t believe that the series will be able to hold its own without Batman for long, but it should be a decent series. Probably not my style though so I can’t guarantee that it will be a good title.

The second story is about the upcoming Superman series and I can already tell you that it is worlds beyond the Batman one. Superman’s identity has been leaked by Lois Lane and he is now on the run. His life has turned upside down as a result and the series will be about him coping with this until the inevitable moment where everyone forgets who he is. I’m hoping that they actually let people know for a few years or more like Iron Man so we can see how Superman would handle this. It would be a nice angle so long as people don’t go after Pa and Ma Kent. (If they are alive in this version) The story seems like it could be quite good even if Clark is slightly overreacting when it comes to hiding. If he truly needs to hide, I’m sure Batman could whip up some kind of disguise.

Finally, we have a Justice League comic. Technically, not a whole lot happens as it is all about foreshadowing, but it still has an aura of intensity that put it above the Batman story for me. The preview of Darkseid taking on the Anti Monitor looked very epic and you can tell that the stakes are going to be high. Batman is going to become a god once more and even Superman may need some backup this time. I’m certainly hyped to see how this all plays out and this could be the adventure of a lifetime for DC fans!

The art for the three series varied as the artists changed, but they all looked good. Justice League naturally looked the best and I’d put Superman in second, but they all use different styles that work for their respective series. The writing appears to be on the level and DC really gave us a great free comic book to celebrate the event. Talk about not pulling their punches!

Overall, This is how a free comic book should be. It had 3 different stories and set up some major plot points for what is to come. These were really previews, but they were enough to get you interested in buying the actual comics. There was really nothing bad to say about them and I look forward to seeing the Superman story in particular as this is a plot that should be very enjoyable to read. (I do think that Superman’s design is a little off though) Justice League will have the ultimate fights that I’m looking for and Batman has…Batman! Nuff said.

BX Heroes 2.0 Sketchbook Review

This is what happens when authors decide to go with the dark angle for a comic. It’s all right to have a dark plot and it can be very well done like in Hunter X Hunter or Kenshin. That being said, there is a line that you have to make sure to not cross and BX Heroes makes sure to cross it. I ended up stopping before the end because it just went too far content wise.

Now, this is a sketchbook so it was mainly just illustrations for various series at first. That’s fine. Most of the series weren’t really my type of comics, but they didn’t look bad. The roach story gave me a lot of bad vibes since it will likely have a lot of animal violence, but I would just skip it. Things went too far when they showed a preview for one of the upcoming comics. In it, we see a lady get taken into a car and then the comic goes out the window.

Any kind of nudity is really too much for a comic and that was enough for me to close the comic. The whole situation was just unnecessarily dark and it means that I’ll never bother checking out the series. I also have to hope that it doesn’t really sell that well because comics like this are just in bad taste. I think that writers are just forgetting how to make interesting villains nowadays.

Making a villain evil doesn’t mean that you need to make them do something unseemly or incredibly graphic. Look at Unicron or Bass EXE. They became threats by destroying planets or just having great dialogue. I can guarantee that they are many times cooler than the villains in this comic.

Overall, there’s not really much more to say about this sketchbook. The illustrations were fine, but the story was terrible and this is not the kind of thing that you’ll want to read. It’s naturally not suitable for kids and I wouldn’t say that it’s appropriate for anyone. Your best bet is to completely skip this comic even if you get it for free. It’s just not worth your time and you’d be better off picking up a book that you’ve already read a few dozen times.
