King of Fighters XI Review


It’s time to jump to another King of Fighters title. XI really gets modern in a lot of ways as it just feels newer than some of the others. The gameplay is really crisp and it’s all on point but they definitely do ramp up the difficulty quite a bit here. I was definitely not prepared for the bullet hell final boss where he was just spamming all kinds of attacks. Certainly not a boss for the faint of heart.

The villains are all making their moves during the King of Fighters tournament which makes sense. We fight Rugal’s kid again and in the climax we’re up against more people trying to harness the powers of Orochi. It’s easy to see why they want this kind of power because it seems like it consistently pushes you to near the top of the verse. So that’s an incredibly handy ability to have. Of course the heroes aren’t about to let that happen so easily. As long as there are heroes left to defend the world, Orochi will not be revived without a fight!

Good luck beating the final boss though, he actually did end up vanquishing me this time. So here’s the tough part, he has many different projectile moves. He can shoot these large orbs that move slowly but bounce a lot. Then he has his lightning fast purple energy blasts. If you get close he has an energy uppercut that deals massive amounts of damage. The guy can also teleport so he will suddenly appear behind you and go for a command grab. You must not let him grab you! I cannot stress this enough, if he grabs you then it’s all over. You’re not going to stand a chance here.

You also can’t time him out this time because the rules have changed. Even if you have more health than the boss, he will win when the counter goes down. It seems like the health is based as a percentage since you had 3 characters to his one. There’s really no chance you are going to triple his health though because all of his energy attacks deal chip damage. So what this means is that you are going to have to take the attack to him. Of course we already know that approaching him is not a good idea because of the uppercut so what other options do you have?

Well, one of them is to try and roll towards the boss. You roll under the energy blast and land a sweeping kick. Of course the problem is that he will often teleport away or hit you as you approach. It’s also not so easy to time the energy attacks and when you roll because of how fast they are. So while the plan itself may be good, that doesn’t mean that it will be successful. In the end you may end up getting absolutely destroyed anyway. No matter how many times I fought the guy, I kept on losing.

That’s even including the bonus they give you after losing where the opponent starts with a lower amount of health. It’s not quite the 1/3 health that it used to be but it’s still a good bonus. I don’t get why this gives the boss so much more defense though. In a way it starts to completely offset the advantage of his having low health in the first place so I really don’t get it. Not a great move if you ask me, I wanted to have a way to defeat this guy. Ah well, major props to anyone who succeeded here.

I didn’t really talk about the gameplay but at its core it is the classic kind of King of Fighters gameplay. It’s a 2D 3 on 3 fighter where you beat up on your opponents. The goal is to knock all of them out before they knock you out. You can use various special moves although the button combinations are rather difficult. In most games I can button mash and get the special attacks out easily but not in this one. Usually your best bet is to use an aerial kick and then a sweeping kick either way though. It’s a 2 hit combo that is incredibly hard for the computer to resist.

Meanwhile the graphics are fairly sharp. I’d say they have aged well and the sprite based style is just a lot of fun in general. The cutscenes themselves are also nostalgic with the different images popping in and out. As always the dialogue can be rather quick though so you need to bring your A game. The soundtrack is also pretty good. Not the best one in the series but it does work pretty well in general so it gets a thumbs up.

In terms of replay value, there is naturally a whole lot here. The vs mode means that you can play that part of the game forever and ever. There are certainly a lot of characters after all and fighting games never really have to end. They can keep on going so long as you have someone to play with. If that is the case then you will be in really good hands. The price isn’t bad either, you could buy this online right now.

Overall, King of Fighters delivers with another really fun game here. The final boss may even be the toughest in some ways just because the game removes the option to cheese him via time out. Rugal still feels like the toughest to me but I was ultimately able to beat most versions of him. (Just not the first one) So I suppose KOF 94 will go down as the hardest and this will be in second place. One thing’s for sure, if you’re looking for a challenge then you have absolutely come to the right place.

Mega Man World Review


I just got to play the game boy games for this title so seeing it in manga form is interesting. Ultimately what keeps it from a higher score is how short the title is though. There are 2 chapters, they have 20 and 18 pages respectively. In those 38 total pages they have to adapt the first two games so as you would expect there isn’t a whole lot of time to really go through the story. Some characters end up missing out entirely and other bosses are downed in a single hit. What this means is you’re sort of seeing an abridged version of the games. I’d have liked to have had a more extended look at the series but at the end of the day I’d still prefer to have an extended version over not having it at all. So in the end I’m still reasonably satisfied here.

The story starts with Wily destroying the city and so Mega Man asks Dr. Light to let him fight. Light equips the kid with a Mega Buster and gives him the iconic Mega Man armor. Now our brave hero is ready to face off against Wily and does so with ease. Cutman and Elecman are the only ones to get real fights as Mega Man gets used to combat. From there he one shots all other opponents as he gets into the zone. Poor Wily is forced to run off and that’s how the adventure goes. It’s a good story but again just so super short.

The second story really follows the same beats here. Only difference is this time Mega Man one shots all of the bosses until he runs up against the alternate, evil future version of himself. This time we get an actual fight as he has to try and win while also realizing that he is destroying his own future. It makes for a pretty good dilemma and also makes the second chapter feel like it has more of an actual story. Wily having to go to the future here is definitely not something that I was expecting the manga to have time to get into.

It reinforces what a genius Wily is and how he will go to great lengths to ensure that he gets the outcome that he wants. He is definitely not the kind of guy that you want to make an enemy out of, that’s for sure. Dr. Light still did good in making Mega Man or at least helping Wily to make him but I wish he would do more during the series. If I saw him being more proactive on a daily basis then that would definitely raise his stocks in my eyes. I want to see him using his own wits to help protect the planet.

The artwork is fairly solid. It’s got more of a retro feel to it with how wide the eyes can be. The battle scenes look good and the pages are easy to follow. Clearly the focus of the manga was not on fights so they are fast but the images that we do get are pretty solid. I definitely didn’t have any issues here, the adventure works pretty well on all accounts. If anything the fact that I think it’s too short shows that this was a quality title since I think there is more they could have done with it.

Overall, Mega Man World is definitely a good manga but it goes by in a flash. The good news is that means you can read is super fast so there’s no excuse not to check it out. Just give up 10-15 minutes of your day and you are all good. That’s not a huge investment right? It’s always fun to check out Mega Man stories and this one was no exception. It’s just a well balanced story all around with a wholesome ending and good writing. If you enjoy this one a lot then you should follow up by checking out Mega Man Gigamix which is still the definitive story for the classic version.

Mega Man IV Review


My Mega Man marathon is nearly at an end now but it was definitely a really good time. Mega Man IV is the longest title in the series up to this point. There are a ton of bosses to defeat and the levels are also fairly long. Throw in the generally high level of difficulty in each stage plus the fact that there are even collectibles now and this is really a complete title.

The basic plot is that Wily and a bunch of robot masters are terrorizing the world. Mega Man himself is going to have to be called in to stop them but can even the Blue Bomber pull out the win? Hopefully he has what it takes because otherwise of course there aren’t really any other heroes at the ready. Mega Man has the unique ability to copy powers after beating opponents so that will give him a bit of a chance.

So like I said one of the new things here are the collectibles. Make sure you at least get all of the letters during the second wave of bosses or you will be unable to access the climax to fight the final levels. It would probably be pretty annoying to have to go back and replay an old level because you missed that right? The letters aren’t hidden so you don’t have to worry about not finding any but they do tend to be on the most difficult to reach paths so it will come down to how skilled you are.

As always I have to say it would probably be difficult to beat the game without the rewind feature. Like I have to imagine you would be getting stuck and losing lives constantly. Even just finding out which weapon was super effective against another one took a whole lot of trial and error. It’s definitely not as easy as in the main console games where you can usually tell right away what would be good against another boss.

In terms of structure, this is similar to the others. You fight the first 4 bosses, then there’s an interlude, then you fight 4 more, and then you enter the climax. So it all comes together pretty well. It is a bit longer like I said so you can expect this to probably take around 2 hours or so. Probably less if you are acing the levels of course so it does come down to your skill level.

In terms of the graphics, everything is all in green again of course so it doesn’t get to show off as much as you would like. The green almost starts to hurt your eyes after a while. I dare say going full black and white would be better than just having one color like this. The designs for the various robots are all good though so I’ll give the game credit there. The soundtrack is more on the forgettable side though. Not really any tunes that you will be humming here.

In general I would also recommend sticking with your mega buster as much as possible here. Yes, other weapons can help but most of the time you will be using the mega buster so you want to be fully comfortable with how it works out. You do have a charge shot now which makes it even better. Aside from the final boss where you have to break out a new weapon, you can beat the whole game with your standard buster.

This game introduces a shop which is a fun thing to have. Basically you can spend P points which is currency you get from enemy drops and then you can buy cool things like extra lives, unique powers, and energy tanks. Personally I recommend the energy tanks the most. Using them will allow you to replenish your health all the way to the top even in the middle of a level. Massively necessary for the various boss fights especially in the climax. It’s the best deal for your points.

Overall, Mega Man IV is a pretty fun game. I could do without the collectibles but at least there aren’t too many of them so you don’t have to spend the whole playthrough looking around. The various fights are all well designed and the extra length makes it stand out. So if you have the Switch Online then you should definitely check this out to help round out the collection.

Rockman-san Review


Now this is a manga that I wish had kept on going for a very long time. It tackles a ton of very interesting topics and took a very different approach from the usual Mega Man product. There was a ton of potential here so it was a shame to see it end so quickly. Either people didn’t resonate with it quite as much as I would have expected or the author just didn’t want to continue. Either way I had a really good time with this one. It’s a story that I shall not forget any time soon!

The story starts off in a world that has already lived through all of the Mega Man adventures. The robots all work different jobs in the city and Wily no longer actively threatens the planet. Mega Man doesn’t even have his combat suit on much anymore as he just patrols the world as a normal citizen. The thing is, a lot of robots don’t really feel like they have a purpose in the world anymore. What are they to do now that there are no more battles to be fought? Some of them actively fight depression while others did find a new calling. Things threaten to be changed forever though when a conspiracy appears about a town that was wiped off the face of the Earth. It looks like the divide between robots and humans is about to grow ever larger and Mega Man will be forced to choose a side. Will he aid the humans, or the robots?

You might not be surprised by this but I didn’t really support the humans much at all in this one. I found them to be incredibly unreasonable and downright annoying at times. They were looking out for themselves the whole time and not the robots. In fact, the humans were still making the case that robots were disposable and at one point they decide to melt them all. Naturally a lot of the robots rebel against this. They’re already being treated as second class citizens but this is taking things a step even further.

It represents a permanent mindset that can’t really be fixed in the Mega Man series. No matter how much personality some of the robots get, they continue to be treated poorly and thought of as just machines the whole time. It’s really unfortunate because a lot of the robots have tried really hard to fit in. The whole first half of the series is about showing us how hard the robots are working and all of the mental tolls it has taken on them. The humans just ignore this to try and wipe them all out which is absolutely crazy.

Naturally two wrongs don’t make a right so you still don’t want the robots to be murdering anyone. Thing is, they aren’t. They rebel by blowing up the facilities and freeing other robots from their controlled states but that’s it. Perhaps that would change in time but at least for the moment, they were not doing anything wrong even while the humans were still causing problems. Right up to the end, the robots are trying to leave the planet and find a new home and the humans are still trying to blow them up.

I feel like the writer was on the robots side here and didn’t like Dr. Light. It’s pure speculation on my part but Dr. Light looks awful in the series so it tracks. He just allow the government to do whatever they want and he barely talks against it. He’s the exact guy that you would not want to have in your corner. You know that you would quickly be sold out at any point. Even if he just does nothing, that’s still a net negative because you are counting on him to help you. Both Dr. Wily and Dr. Cossack look considerably better than Light in their brief cameos. They at least try to inform the world of the incoming threats and everything.

Again this is not an action series first and foremost though. In most cases Mega Man tries to resolve things with words. It’s only when there is no other course of action that he dons the Mega Buster. In some ways it is disappointing to see him ally with the humans but that’s just the way he has always been. He is also just trying to make sure that nobody gets hurt and figures the humans need to be protected. The main problem is it implies that a part of him also doesn’t feel like the robots are sentient or else he would be helping them too right? That’s a topic that comes up several times here.

I don’t give Mega Man much grief here because he was clearly trying his best to find the optimal answer here. He wasn’t giving up or being passive here. He just kept on trying to get more information the whole time so that he could make an informed decision. Even for robots he tried not to hurt anyone. So yeah he’s a really good hero even if his instincts aren’t always right. Additionally he gets to look fantastic in the fight scenes. When he actually does fight, he tends to blow his opponents away. They just don’t stand a chance and that’s against a heavily suppressed Mega Man who is rusty in terms of combat.

This is fully deserved though. I am glad to see Mega Man being portrayed as the ultimate robotic fighter that he is. There should not be any fighter who can stand up to him at this point. Only exceptions would be Proto Man or Bass but they don’t appear in this story. Instead Mega Man’s rival is a guy named Enker. His role initially is to try and destroy Mega Man but then for most of the series his mission is to protect Dr. Light. He has a lot of good comedic moments but also looks good when it comes time to be serious. He’s a solid character and I like how his arc played out. He definitely ended up being one of the more memorable characters.

The ending to the series isn’t quite as satisfying though. It’s really abrupt with everything still going on. I’m always up for a good cliffhanger of course but it felt less like a cliffhanger and more like a complete loss for robot kind. I feel like the Earth is about to get a whole lot worse now. If the humans decide to go after Mega Man we already know that Dr. Light won’t do anything and what is even worse is that Mega Man may not decide to stop them. Taking a punishment that you don’t deserve is no good.

The artwork is pretty great as you would expect. There is a lot of detail in the series and all of the character designs are on point. They did a good job with Mega Man’s new design as well. It’s one that makes sense with the character and ties in well with his attempts to be more human. When we do get some action scenes, they really pop out. The artist would clearly do extremely well in a full on action based series. It really helps to enhance the manga as well.

While the first half may be a little bit on the slow side, I do like the mystery that kept on building up towards the climax about the villains making their move. I was like Detective Conan where you would get one nugget every few chapters. It’s kind of like that but for less time of course since the series isn’t all that long. It makes the stand alone chapters work well but additionally I was liking them anyway because it was interesting to see what each robot master was up to. This is the kind of series that worked really well as a slice of life title and then it also worked really well as a more serious plot based one. So they were really covering all of the bases on this one.

Now lets go on a final tally on which side I was in for each of the debates. The humans ordered all robots to be disarmed and then hunted down the ones that did not comply. Naturally I’m with the robots on this one. If you disarm them all they will be completely defenseless for when the humans get up to trouble and that always happens at some point. I already talked about the humans orders for them to all be melted down so that position is rather obvious I would think.

Then when the robots are trying to leave the humans want to blow them up to make sure they are not a threat later on. As you can surely guess, I was not a fan of that either. So no matter how you slice it, the humans were wrong in every single case. I think the dangerous thing is how a lot of their laws were going through with no real opposition. Mega Man didn’t even realize the robots were losing so many rights. More specifically he didn’t see it as a kind of oppression and was just on board with it from the start. He saw nothing wrong with it and basically had to be informed by the robots.

This is all before the whole conspiracy even appears which makes things even worse. The whole story serves as a cautionary tale of the classic corrupt government story. It’s good to be a hero and all but you have to be careful who you’re fighting for. Ultimately Mega Man has no regrets in saving the world so many times which is a good thing but for sure things are going in a rather dangerous place right now and he has to adapt. This manga should have been stretched to 100 chapters and you really could have done a deep dive into the topics.

Overall, Rockman-San is a great manga and a very interesting title in general. I feel like we’ll never see anything quite like this one again even though it is super interesting. I want to see more of this era from after the battles. Of course there are still a lot of fights going on with different factions being chosen. The series does transition into more of a battle manga for the second half and this balance really could have been kept for a long time. It asks you to really think carefully about the issues and see how you would respond. I don’t think Mega Man responded particularly well but maybe you will agree with him. It’s not a straight forward yes or no depending on how you view the situation. I would definitely recommend checking it out though. Even if you’re not a Mega Man fan, it plays out like Pluto where you can understand the themes well enough and weigh in on the debate. In fact Pluto is the best comparison to make, if you liked Pluto then you’ll enjoy this one. Rockman-san is not nearly as dark or as intense but does tackle a lot of the same themes of robots and humans.

The Abyss Review


The Abyss is one of the more disappointing movies of recent memory. It has a really cool sounding name and a really good premise with some kind of monster out there ready to wreck havoc. It has all of the fundamentals of a good movie but the problem? It’s borrrrrrring! The monster has one of the worst designs since E.T. and there isn’t a sense of danger from the supernatural. All that leaves us with is the human dangers which are not nearly as compelling.

The film starts off with a bunch of people getting wrecked underwater. Bud’s team is sent to the wreckage to check things out and save what they can. The problem is that Bud’s team isn’t trained for this kind of thing. They’re oil drillers, not NAVY seal operators. So a Navy team is sent down with them but they don’t play well with others. Additionally, they seem to be keeping quite a few secrets. At this rate it might be internal strife that destroys everyone.

So back to the main problem, you’re waiting for these mysterious aliens to show up for the whole film. They finally do some stuff at the very end of the movie but that’s about it. They miss around 90% of the adventure and this doesn’t play out like your classic creature feature. The monsters aren’t running around blowing everyone up or shooting energy blasts. They mainly fly around at super speeds and act whimsical. They are clearly not mindless but their impact within the film basically falls into that range.

I was expecting a whole lot more to them so this ended up being pretty underwhelming. The film messed up on the atmosphere and so I would have cut out the supernatural stuff entirely. It’s not like it adds much to the film and if you removed it, then it wouldn’t even be a distraction. Then you can focus on all of the drama that you want. Not a bad proposition right? Then right from the start you have your expectations in check. I don’t think that would suddenly make this a good movie but it wouldn’t be quite so disappointing.

Bud is the main character here and a lot of the film is about the tension he has with his wife Lindsey. The two don’t get along at all anymore but they have to put aside their differences to team up here. It’s a fun enough plot but the romance itself is definitely a weak link. They seriously don’t get along so it’s hard to see that spark reforming. I would have been satisfied if they just became friends again or something.

That said, Lindsey does have a moment where she looks pretty bad considering that she’s supposed to be a genius. At one point she is talking tough to the Navy Seals and trying to rush them which nearly gets her murdered twice. Bud has to hold her back because the guy clearly has a gun and even without it he could easily defeat her. So that’s a case where she really wasn’t thinking ahead. It almost forced Bud into a fight where all of his men would have been murdered as well.

Bud does get his big fight near the end though where he gets to show his stuff. He puts up a good fight although he definitely whiffed on his big surprise attack move. If he had just moved a little faster and gone ahead with the strike then he might have won it all right there. Fortunately his friend was around with the mighty haymaker punch. That guy was definitely handy to have around. In general I would say that the crew was okay, not too many characters to write home about but they weren’t bad or anything.

The villains are a bit more on the one note side. The submarine and the stress make them go crazy so they actually resort to wanting to use a bomb that could blow everyone up. The villain is definitely annoying but his partner isn’t much better since he just watches and yells the whole time. At the end of the day if you’re helping the main villain then you are just as guilty even if you aren’t doing much of anything.

At least it was fun to see the government being rather shady as always. From the start this seemed like it would not be a very good idea with how fast the government was scrambling. Clearly they were holding something back but at the same time they were willing to pay triple for this mission which is incredibly hard to turn down. That’s not money that you are able to easily earn after all and you have to assume that in most cases this would have gone without a hitch. There would have been no conspiracies or aliens. If that had been the case then I suppose I’d be singing a different tune right now.

The film at least embraces the sci-fi angle a bit near the very end of the movie. We have some crazy visuals like out of 2001 with Bud flying around. It’s all rather trippy and the ending had potential there but alas then the film ends. It really should have tried having some of this stuff right out of the gate you know? That would have been way better because I’m always up for an alien film. Just make the alien invaders tough with a good design.

Overall, The Abyss really doesn’t live up to the name. It’s crazy that such a great name would be wasted on this movie. There are so many better names that you could have chosen here and all of them would have been infinitely better. The movie doesn’t make many big mistakes but the fact that it can be boring at times is a huge knock against the film. You never want to be bored even for an instant. The film either should have thrown in some more humor to give me some laughs, cooler creatures that have a lot of screen time, or given us some time outside of the ship. I would have liked to have heard more about the tensions with Russia that’s apparently in the uncut version and you can cut out some of the slower paced scenes here instead.

The Bad News Bears in Breaking Training Review


It’s time for the return of the Bad News Bears! Unfortunately they have lost all of their skills from the last film so in a way you could almost treat this as a pseudo remake/reboot instead. As you’d probably expect, the most entertaining characters tend to be the adults while the kids can be more on the annoying side. There is definitely a lot of in fighting among the kids as they all get in each other’s way. They are not a well oiled machine.

The movie starts with a lot of Bad News for the Bears. Their coach is gone along with their top tier pitcher and also their best overall player. They’re going to be travelling to Texas to take on one of the best teams out there but as they are now they would be absolutely crushed. So they have to do something about this but what is there to do? Well, first thing’s first, they are going to need a coach. Kelly has a plan on this and meets up with his father Mike hoping that he can help. The two have a very strained relationship as Mike left the family and it’s been years since they met up. Mike agrees to help out but is Kelly actually okay with this?

In a lot of ways Kelly is probably the most annoying character here. I say that because he asked Mike for help and Mike agreed to do it. That should have been the end of it but then you have Kelly still throwing fits and not being sure if this is what he really wants. Mike decided to be the bigger guy and help out, Kelly should be grateful about this. You don’t have to be best friends or anything like that but I would at least expect some basic common courtesies and respect. Instead Kelly is just super ungrateful during the entire film. At the end he has his big emotional moment where he admits that he would have went looking for Mike even without the baseball experience and I have my doubts on that. So it undercuts the emotional vale of the moment just a bit.

We do get a lot of Baseball so that’s good at least. It’s a little rough to see the main team doing so poorly though. They get absolutely smoked at first which doesn’t make much sense. Yes, without their star pitcher they will give up more runs but they can’t even hit the ball anymore. That’s just plain embarrassing. Maybe the team isn’t quite as into Baseball as they try to get us to believe. They’re just in it for the fame and fortune.

It would also be nice if they could actually get along for 20 minutes without always trying to fight each other right away. There are so many moments in the film where the characters are on the bus and just start fighting each other. It always has to be broken up and you are reminded that the players are not very professional at the moment.

I felt bad for their fake coach who they manipulated in order to leave town though. The poor guy wasn’t actually invited to go along and was probably stressed the whole time. After all it would be easy for any parent to run into him and then what can he say? The guy was not particularly smart which is part of why he was easy to fool but by the same token that means it would be easy for him to spill the beans as well.

The film can also go into some rather generic territories. For example there is one kid who talks really tough throughout the movie. He’s the new pitcher and one of the best in the business. Well, of course it turns out that he can’t play. In fact he can’t even pitch a slow ball. He is possibly the worst player there at first and that’s rough. So that was definitely a bit much, I’d have preferred that the tough talking kid be someone who can actually hold his own. In a way that would have been a good twist.

Now I will say that the climax is pretty solid though. The idea that the kids’ match would be grounded so the adults could play does feel like something that could happen. I wouldn’t be shocked at least since the average fan wouldn’t care about the kids game too much. Sure there would be a lot of outrage and a public apology later on but in the moment? Yeah that could happen but I was glad that everyone united to stick up for the kids. It was a good climax and solid way to end things.

Ultimately the movie is just a bit more aimless than the first film. The first Bad News Bears had a very solid plot with an interesting angle and we got a good film out of that. This one is trying to copy a lot of the same plot elements which don’t work quite as well the second time around. Some of the plots are new like Kelly and Mike but that one wasn’t executed super well. I felt like a lot of the reasons that Kelly was made at him made no real sense. It was forced drama to extend the film and you didn’t really need that. Give us more scenes of Mike training the team so they can be a solid unit instead. That would have been better.

Overall, Bad News Bears 2 is an okay movie but probably not one I would really want to rewatch. It’s not bad but it does come across as rather pointless at times. You feel like there just has to be more to this film than what you’re seeing but then that doesn’t change as the film ends. There were some good ideas in concept but they just weren’t executed. The film is also a little restricted since most of the characters are kids and they don’t tend to be nearly as interesting. You just need to really enjoy the kids having their little banters and skirmishes. Otherwise this will definitely not be keeping up and I would recommend you watch most other mainstream Baseball films instead.

The Sandlot Review


The Sandlot is one of those films that I would say has not aged very well. It ends up being more annoying than anything with all of the kids being rather obnoxious. The whole time you are waiting for them to change into better characters and it doesn’t really happen. Hey, they’re all rather young so you can cut them some slack but even so, I just expected better out of these guys. There’s also not enough baseball here which definitely hurts.

The movie starts with Scott moving to a new town again. It’s been rather tough for him to make friends as a result but he gives it his best effort. He heads to the local park where the kids are playing Baseball and tries to fit in but the problem is that he doesn’t actually know how to play. They eventually teach him and now they’re all one big unit. The question is, are they good influences…or bad ones?? Only time will tell.

Okay so right out of the gate the biggest problem here is that none of the kids are likable. They’re all super annoying and constantly getting into trouble. It’s quite telling that they were all super mean to Scott until he learned how to play. The main kid had to rig the game to have the others even give him a shot. It makes you wonder how many other kids they bullied. Yeah Scott was no good at the game but it’s still not a reason to be mean like that.

Then we have the whole lifeguard scene which is the low point of the film. The kid pretends to drown and tricks her which all of the other kids find to be hilarious and even something to be admired. No, that’s just an awful moment and shows that all of the kids are morally bankrupt. It’s just rough and you know that these kids could and should do better. So the film is ticking all of the wrong boxes here and it’s tough because they be getting away with all of this with no real repercussions. That’s another problem right here. If they were getting punished or yelled at then they could at least have some character development but that never happens.

The film also takes the low road of crude humor later on. We have kids barfing and it’s definitely not what you’re trying to see here. These scenes don’t exactly enhance your cinematic experience. Again, where’s the character development? Where are the fun scenes? They are nowhere to be found. To really show that the kids haven’t learned much about being responsible, Scot steals his step father’s baseball with a super rare signature. Things don’t go very well there and the whole thing was Scott’s fault.

I wasn’t super thrilled with how the ending played out. The chase scene with the big dog could have been fun but the whole time you are worried that the dog is going to get injured and of course he does. So that’s just writing in a terrible scene. The dog was really cool and I liked how much power he had in every scene but he should have ended the climax without any real injuries. Now that would have been a good way to close things out. At least I will say that the montage of coming up with ideas to get past the dog was easily the best part of the film. This was a time where the film was actually entertaining even if it wasn’t for long.

I already mentioned the most of the worst moments of the film so I guess all I can say about this is that otherwise the film just could get kind of boring. You weren’t as invested in the various characters and scenes as you could have been because of the characters. Even when they picked a fight with another group, I was rooting for them to lose because in the banter I felt like the main characters were being a lot meaner about it.

Another issue with the climax of the film is how things went for the neighbor. He’s a nice guy to be sure but losing his prized possession ball to give to some irresponsible kids wasn’t great. I know the step Dad will take good care of it but the neighbor is the one who really earned it. I know it’s supposed to be more on the heart warming side but I thought it was just plain annoying. The kids didn’t really deserve that.

Most of the film is also really focused on the kids so the subplot about Scott feeling awkward around his Step Dad doesn’t get a lot of focus. On one hand he is hoping to bond so they can be friends but on the other hand Scott is really bad at the whole Baseball thing at first. The fact that he can’t even throw is rather rough since he runs the ball over. I don’t think Bill hit Scott in the face with the ball on purpose though. Bill could have been gentler and better with the throws but I think generally he just wasn’t sure how to teach at all. He was also just shocked at how bad Scott was. Usually you at least have some fundamentals but this time he didn’t.

The only good kid in the film is Benny. He never makes fun of Scott and really helped him to fit in from the start. He stayed humble all the way through even though he was the best player. Benny was the only one brave enough to confront the dog in the end and he has a real sense of responsibility. He almost felt out of place next to all of the other kids who could only think about their own agendas. So yeah I wanted to give him a shoutout because in all fairness he was a legitimately good character.

Overall, The Sandlot isn’t really my kind of film and that’s to be expected. Generally I am not a big fan of coming of age type movies. Usually that’s because a film like this is pretty much guaranteed to have annoying characters. Part of the whole point is to have the characters learn some lessons about life as they grow up. That’s great, it means that the ending should usually be good but you will also have to be enduring the main cast for the whole film leading up to that which is a much taller order. It’s just not going to work because a film should be good for most of its scenes, not just at the very end. That’s where this one falters big time.

Robin Hood Review


Robin Hood is one of those franchises that I’ve never really been into. The concept of a hero who steals from the rich to give to the poor is a fun one. It’s like a vigilante who is redistributing the wealth as he sees fit. Fortunately the rich people are usually super corrupt and awful or else there would be a lot of moral issues with this. That being said, the animated film has a lot more fun with the concept than the other movies. It’s easily the definitive Robin Hood film if you ask me.

The film starts off by introducing us to Robin Hood who has outsmarted the authorities yet again. He’s been doing this for years and is an expert at escaping although the cops are slowly getting a little better. Robin Hood intends to keep up this life for a while but he ends up falling for Lady Marian and wants to impress her now. What better way than messing with the corrupt royalty and embarrassing them at every turn? The dangerous part of this is the higher up he goes in the food chain, the more forces they will arm up to stop him. Has he just stirred up a hornet’s nest?

Right off the bat I thought the animation was really good. Everything looks sharp and super vibrant from the quick character motions to the backdrops. There is a lot of attention to detail here. There also isn’t a lot of songs for a musical type film but I did like one of the villain’s songs. That was definitely good. On a technical level this film holds up extremely well. It’s why I like this kind of animation style because it never goes away or gets stale. Instead in 20 years it will still look as good.

Then we have the writing which has a lot of clever dialogue the whole time. The banter between all of the characters is really solid. The only one that is a bit try hard is the main villain who is super incompetent and that’s his entire gimmick. He gets suckered all the time while his poor snake ally is constantly trying to help him out. I would have liked the Prince to have been ever so slightly more competent. I get the dynamic they were going for here but it’s not the most entertaining one because it is so lopsided. Give Robin Hood a little more competition against a foe who is more skilled and then we can really be talking.

The Sheriff was a great villain though. He has a masterful scene where he really takes it to Robin Hood. So Robin is disguised as a panhandler and is asking for money. So the sheriff expertly tosses a gold coin into his cup at the perfect angle to also cause his second gold coin to fall out of the cup. So as a result the sheriff has both coins while Robin Hood has none. Hood had his own plan and gets his immediate revenge but I thought that was brilliant. It was the most memorable scene to me after I had finished the film. You just don’t forget a moment like that. I wish he had been the main villain of the whole thing.

John just couldn’t compete. I liked his snake partner though even if he was mostly just taking Ls the whole time. Robin Hood’s partner John was fun enough. I don’t think he ever becomes quite as entertaining as Robin Hood was but he’s still nice enough. It’s always important to have at least one friend on your journeys or you will really feel very alone. As for the heroine Marian, she was nice enough. I may say that the romance in the film was a bit cheesy at times but at least it wasn’t all that rushed. A lot of time passes by over the course of the film and it helps this romance to beat the average one. I still wouldn’t call it the gold standard of anything but it doesn’t bring the movie down.

I would say the most effective part of the film is just that it’s a lot of fun. A lot of times in a Robin Hood movie the main issue is that it can be a bit boring. Sometimes they will also fall into the trap of animal violence but the mot common issue is that it’s just not very interesting and that’s a really bad position to be in. When you’re boring then it is very hard to save the film. This one dodged that immediately with the really solid humor. Most of the jokes really land here.

I would say that the animation helps to back up the jokes because the really expressive style just works really well. It still would not be enough on its own but when you add everything up then it is really a winning formula. I still won’t be all that hyped if there’s an announcement for a new Robin Hood film but if the announcement is that this one in particular is getting a sequel then I would be on board with that. That would have some real potential and the premise lends itself well to sequels. There’s no reason you would ever really have to stop making Robin Hood movies. You could even have Lady Marian join in as a partner/sidekick on his future missions.

Overall, Robin Hood is a pretty good film and I would recommend checking it out. The pacing is on point and the whole movie really flies by. I suppose it helps that the film is really short in general so it’s not like it was going to drag on either way. The film is well crafted and a lot of effort was clearly put into it. It really does its best to try and convince you that Robin Hood is actually a good franchise. If all of the films were like this one then I suppose is would be a really good one.

Bendy: Fade to Black Review


It’s time for a spooky adventure in the Bendy verse. I don’t read very many books nowadays so it’s always fun once I get to jump in again. This is a solid one that is rather low key for a while but then the climax feels like the Bendy games. While parts of the writing may have felt a bit off to me, I was definitely engaged with what was going on. The ending is really worth going through the whole book as it takes the adventure in a bold direction that I was certainly not expecting.

The story starts by introducing us to Rose who is excited to finally be working. She has a job at a local media company where she will be helping out on the Bendy show. Her job is more of a background one as she gets papers ready, delivers coffee, etc. Still, it’s a pretty good way to start an eventual climb into stardom so she is definitely ready for all of this. Unfortunately what she doesn’t realize is that Joey Drew is a rather suspicious fellow. He can seem nice one moment and then completely deranged the next. This may be quirky at first but the problem is that he is legitimately dangerous. If she doesn’t watch her step then it will be all over for her.

Of course if you’ve played the games before then you already know that Bendy has become an evil monster. Well, that may not be exactly accurate but you should play the game to really see the lore as there are a lot of good twists and turns. For simplicity’s sake though I’m going to be calling the main monster Bendy. Bendy destroys all who oppose him and in the game we see how Joey rambles a lot and really went down the wild side. He would do anything to protect his creations and make his show the best in the world. So this is like a prequel where we still see him in the early stages of this. He has his ink machine and is creating monsters.

One thing I liked about Joey here is that he’s unapologetically evil. He’s not saddened by how his creations are doing more harm than good. He’s not talking about regrets or anything like that. Joey just spends the whole book laughing about how great he is and what a success the whole thing is. He has no sense of loyalty and this was always part of the plan. He would destroy everyone in his way because that’s what he does. It’s just refreshing to have a complete villain like this and he has some of the best dialogue in the book.

Unfortunately Rose is unable to be his perfect contrast here. As the lead I don’t think she was able to hold her own or be nearly as interesting. For starters her dialogue makes her sound like a little kid the whole time. I do think this mainly falls on the writer but it’s easy to forget that she’s close to being an adult. Part of her character is about being really optimistic but there are many ways to do that without making her sound like a kid you know? That’s where my problem with her is. She has her big moments where she tries to talk tough to Joey and the others but for the most part she freezes under pressure and just ends up taking the L.

I give her props for doing her best in a rather tough environment but I would have liked a tougher main character. She is considerably better than her little brother though. That kid fell for every trap from Bendy and it didn’t make any sense. He was super annoying the whole time and the whole book would have been way better if he could have at least seen through one trick or two. He was consistently holding everyone back the whole time. I know that he’s a kid but even so, Rose actually warned him in advance about Bendy and the kid still let himself be bossed around.

Her parents didn’t look great here either. Her father has a lot of PTSD from the war so he’s really out of commission the whole time. Her mother tries her best to keep everything secure but seems to have very little sympathy for what Rose was going through. The heroine has done her best for years but one slip up where she lets out a yell and everyone’s upset? They should be upset at her brother for scaring her when they’re all in a tense situation. There are a few supporting characters around as well like the boss of the big media company. He’s a lot of fun. You can bet that Joey won’t be talking to him any kind of way because that guy’s just too good. The secretary also seemed nice enough.

Her friend at the job was nice enough even if he did panic though. Trying to dismantle the ink machine to keep it around was a super bad idea. There’s a random rich kid who shows up at the watch party and it was a bad moment for Rose as she was basically getting mind controlled with ease in there. She had to be rescued which was not a good look at all. You need to be able to get out of a situation like that on your own or you’re really not ready for the big times. I felt bad for one guy who was turned into an ink creature and has to keep on dying. The Bendy-verse definitely gets real dark at times. It was still naive of them to think that Joey would care though.

In the video games it is all about running from the creatures and hiding where you can. This finally becomes a big thing by the end of the book which is my favorite part. There’s a lot of tension here and an actual body count as well. The book really goes hard here and that climax could really be adapted as a full game at some point. Then of course we have the big ending as I mentioned which is really intense. It also makes sense I would say since someone really didn’t have a chance of returning. No power of friendship is going to work here, logically Bendy already had the situation covered.

Overall, The book has a very slow pace for a little while there. You do need to enjoy the mystery and the slow build up because the action doesn’t kick in until the final chapters. That said, I thought the payoff was worth the build up. It did a good job of bringing everything together so I was definitely satisfied here and am ready for more Bendy books. If you’re in the mood for a book with some spooky events scattered within then this is the title for you.

Lost Planet 2 Review


It’s time for the second Lost Planet title! I played the first one very recently so it’s definitely still top of mind. This one doesn’t quite match up to the first one though either in story or gameplay. Part of what makes this one unique is that the whole game is balanced around the multiplayer aspect. So playing on your own actually puts you at a rather heavy disadvantage. I do think this game would get massively boosted if you had other people to play with but as a solo game it is still good.

The game’s story is anthology style as you play as different factions in each episode. Then by the end you finally get to play as all of them. The context here is that the planet is finally vibrant after the events of the first game so now everyone is fighting for their own interests. Some want money, some want honor, etc. The alien creatures are still around but they’re more of an afterthought at this point. If you see one then you blow it up but otherwise they aren’t exactly a big threat at this stage. Just take them out and keep moving but is it possible that the aliens are planning something big?

The campaign is reasonably long. There are 6 episodes, each episode has around 4 chapters and each chapter has 2-6 missions. The missions themselves can really range in length from some being around 10 minutes to others being over 30. So you never quite know what you’re about to get yourself into so always stay prepared. The objective is usually to get to the end of an area but other times you have to protect some devices, activate towers, or beat all enemies in an area. There is quite a lot of variety here.

The gameplay is that of a 3D shooter so you run around and blast away at everyone. There are a lot of weapons so you will want to see which is your favorite. Personally I feel like the shotgun is easily the best one. It hits almost as hard as the rockets but also fires off rounds much quicker. What this means is you can comfortably beat almost any minion in one hit with it and you also deal powerful damage against the boss. It has more ammo than the rockets as well so it really does feel like the most overpowered weapon in the game. To make up for this, the spawn rate isn’t great. You will go many missions where you don’t even see it.

One thing to remember is that weapons carry over when you beat a mission so just make sure you hang onto it. You can also find mechs to ride. When you jump into a mech you get weapons that are much stronger than normal. Most of them can also hover or fly for a while which is great and the armor is more advanced. They are really necessary for when the enemies bring out their own mechs. If you try to beat one while you are on foot then I guarantee that it is not going to go well. You are going to get absolutely demolished no matter how you look at it. Even run and gun tactics are often not effective because they can move faster than you can. So once you get into range to land a blow it is already too late.

As far as the graphics go, I would say the game ages pretty well. The environments look pretty good and I like the designs of the mech suits. There isn’t a lot of opportunity for the game to really show off in terms of colors since this isn’t a very colorful game but it works well enough. As for the soundtrack, that is a bit more forgettable. I can’t really recall any iconic tunes off the top of my head at least but it does the job well enough.

The A.I. is definitely terrible though. It goes back to the difficulty scale not being meant for single player. There are missions where each player has a task like in the big boss fight where you have to use a ship against it. You need one guy cooling down the ship in the engine room, one using the cannon, and 2 to load the cannon with ammo. The only thing that the computers knew how to do was load the cannon. They couldn’t fire it or cool the ship down so I had to do everything on my own. In normal mode this was effectively impossible as a result so at that point in the game I had to lower the difficulty.

As you can probably expect, this is an issue to an extent in every level though. The allies don’t really do their part in supporting you so you really have be a one man army and that’s not easy. You start to run out of ammo quickly this way as well as energy. The game has an interesting mechanic where you can always regenerate your energy as long as you have some stockpiled but otherwise when you lose health it is just gone. Also, you can be defeated while you are regenerating and you will end up being surrounded by enemies before long. Outside of missions that have a time limit, it can be a fun way to test your skills though. Can you effectively defeat all of the enemies on your own? Due to the energy system you can also die a few times before it runs out so that’s another thing to keep in mind. You don’t have to literally be perfect or anything like that.

One thing I noticed is whenever I would leave the game during a mission, the game data would corrupt. That could just be my copy but keep that in mind. Try to beat as many levels as possible because otherwise it takes a while to rebuild the game each time. I am glad to know about this for the future for other PS3 games though. If you delete the game data without deleting the save data then you can actually continue from where you left off after reinstalling the title. It’s a pretty good trick although hopefully I won’t actually need it later on.

Overall, I had a good time with the game. It definitely had some issues like the A.I. not being very good and the difficulty balancing in general though. They should have worked on the single player experience more even if that wasn’t the focus. The data corruption was rough but that might have been more of a disc thing than the game itself. So I would say to check this game out but maybe start it on easy mode from the jump. You will need to change later on anyway so you might as well enter it this way. At some point I’ll definitely need to check out the third game even if it does seem rather infamous.
