The Misfit of Demon King Academy II Review

Anos definitely started season 1 out like a champ as he took everyone down and proved his utmost brilliance. He conquered death itself and took the fight to the gods. I would say season 2 has a hard time topping that but Anos definitely looks as great as you’d expect. He’s still rocking gods and everyone else who gets in his ways. I always like when a main character is this OP and he even makes for a really heroic character. This is truly the character who has everything and while season 2 might not match the pop of season 1, it absolutely holds its own.

The first part of the season is really about dealing with Shin’s past as well as Misa’s true form as Avos. The past events naturally get a little more tension than in the present since the characters can’t interact with the past. That would be impossible right? Well…..this is Anos we’re talking about so lets just say he messes with the past anyway but it was a good attempt. Then with the Avos part, yeah Anos could crush her but he’s not the kind of guy to go all out against a friend so the real tough part is finding a way to defeat Avos without actually destroying Misa. Anos is a guy who always has the answers so we’ll have to see what he comes up with.

By this season the character cast is actually rather big. Like in Reincarnated as a Slime, it’s not enough for Anos to be completely overpowered, he’s also got the most overpowered squad backing him up. We’re talking gods, the strongest swordsman, the hero king reincarnated, etc. Anos and his squad really cannot be beat and to try and counter that, the villains have more gods of their own this time but it doesn’t ultimately make much of a difference. Some of these villains are indeed quite strong but this isn’t the kind of series where you are overly worried about the heroes. Anos will ultimately be around to save them should things go too far. The villains do their best to split the heroes up but it tends to be in vain.

Also like I mentioned before, the rest of the heroes are so powerful they rarely need Anos to bail them out at this point. I would say season 2 is a bit more of an ensemble product compared to season 1 where most of it was Anos humiliating everybody. No worries though, Anos is still an absolutely crucial figure so don’t think he’s getting written out of anything like that. Now that would have been sad.

On a technical level, season 2 doesn’t seem quite as high budget as season 1. Or maybe it’s more accurate to say it is less consistent. In season 1 the episodes were always super good looking while season 2 has its stand out scenes but also has some really average ones. So prepare for a bit of a bumpy ride at times but I will say that the important fight scenes always look really good. Additionally the soundtrack is still really good. I would say that the openings are not nearly as good as in season 1 but they are still catchy. Just not ones that you will listen to as often as the season 1 tunes. Those I ended up listening to quite a few times.

As for the characters, Anos is awesome as always. One thing they added in this season was to make Anos get an alternate identity as a kid which was pretty interesting. He’s still really smug in this form while also being able to offer advice to those who need it. It adds a little extra touch of humanity to the character. He’s always benevolent by nature but as a kid he is certainly more approachable for some characters than he would have been otherwise.

Meanwhile Shin gets a lot to do here. We get to meet his kid and wife. Turns out that the guy is a real softy once family is involved. His skills are still the real deal though as he continues to dominate Lay in combat. I like the rivalry that ends up developing as a result. Additionally, I tend to enjoy the trope of the doting father so seeing him be really strict with Lay is fun. That’s how the show is in general after all, maintaining a fun tone all the way. So this is another fun gag to add to the pile and I also really loved the battle of bonds with Shin and Anos taking on Lay and Misa.

It’s only natural that the love of a leader and subordinate would beat the budding love between boyfriend and girlfriend. Maybe in a few years once their feelings have had time to evolve even more then it could be different but could Anos lose in any competition? Yeah this was definitely a whole lot of fun. Reno also ends up being a really fun character. For most of the season you’re wondering exactly how her story is going to play out since appearing in a flashback is always a worrying sign. She is also fairly tough although in this verse at minimum you need to be top tier or you aren’t going to last very long in a fight. She goes through a lot but ultimately Anos ends up stepping in.

Sasha and Misha had their big character arcs in the first season but no worries they still get a lot to do here. They can now use their fusion form at will and in that mode they are also incredibly powerful. They even get a big fight of their own which was nice to see. Sasha still has her tough personality which always makes her a lot of fun to watch. Misha tends to still be quiet which isn’t as entertaining but she means well. I won’t be too harsh on her, she tends to be better than most of the quiet characters in this archetype at the very least.

Misa is a character who didn’t really stand out a lot in season 1 so this time she gets a massive role in the first half. It turns out that she is actually the true false dark lord and gets a massive power up along with her true form. In her true form she is much more assertive and I know that’s just a side effect of being evil initially but then later on she is able to utilize that personality at will. It’s still basically Misa in both forms and I would say it bumps up the character tremendously. It even makes her romance with Lay a lot more interesting. Season 2 absolutely bumped her up the most from all of the characters.

Meanwhile Lay still looks solid in the fight although his whole having 7+ souls thing becomes less and less impressive as the series goes on. Basically to actually defeat him you basically have to murder the guy a half dozen times right away before all of his souls regenerate. The big villains are able to do this rather quickly now and I would say Lay has had a real hard time keeping up with the other heavyweights in the verse. He is still really strong but the series goes all in on the power creep. It’s fitting for a title like this. Lay’s a good guy throughout the series though so his personality is on point.

One of the big OP villains for example is Nosgalia. The guy is one of those gods who can body hop and is always talking a really big game. From all of the villains I would say he easily shows the most arrogance against Anos. The guy is very powerful so I would say it is earned but of course at the end of the day he has nothing against Anos. While I respect his power, I can’t say that I cared very much for Nosgalia as a character though. Not my kind of villain and he’s definitely not the honorable sort.

Can’t say I was a big fan of Erdomaid either but that guy gets a considerable amount of hype too. Anos really tames him into being a forced servant for a good chunk of the season though. He almost literally cannot oppose Anos now that his powers are shackled but this guy is a real trickster. If anyone can have a second wind it’s him. In a way his goal is to make Anos the best demon lord possible but their sense of morals and what makes a good demon lord are completely incompatible. I would say Anos should just permanently off him but he is the kind of demon lord who tends to be merciful to a lot of characters so it’s not exactly surprising.

Now by this point you probably figure nobody can really do anything against Anos so what’s the next step? Well, what if Anos’ memories were tampered with. What if…he tampered with them? The only one who can possibly stop him would be himself so that makes things interesting. He meets up with the goddess of creation and she seems to know a lot but for now it’s fairly cryptic. Part of the second half is about Anos trying to regain those lost memories and find out why they were removed in the first place.

This actually leads into a tournament! The God Selection where 8 people will compete with their summoned gods in order to obtain true power. Anos doesn’t have a whole lot of interest in this but he is thrown into the mix regardless and at least this could give some clue as to where his true memories are. It’s not the most formalized kind of tournament as the combatants tend to do their own thing and everyone has an agenda but it was still pretty fun. I liked how high stakes it was and naturally this meant Anos would have time to style on everyone a bit more.

Away from all of the big battles, Emilia also gets a subplot to herself. Her character appearing in general was definitely a surprise. She was pretty awful in season 1 but now the true depths of Anos’ plan have finally hit. He is helping her to become a better person and the punishment of having to teach the pesky humans is just part of that. Her class was filled with a bunch of troublemakers and do-gooders but she is ultimately able to reach out to them. Thanks in no part to the corrupt headmaster who is just there to cause trouble. We see how Emilia had to eat lunch all by herself and was shunned by everyone. The scenes aren’t particularly long but do make you feel really bad for her. I was glad that she ended up getting a happy ending.

Eleonore and Zeshia also get to return thanks to the new venue. At this point the power creep has long since surpassed them but they still do well against the monsters that showed up. They’re generally fun characters like most of the cast so I was glad to see them around. Even the Anos fanclub gets to have their moment to shine with the songs so the series really made sure not to leave anybody behind.

Arcana is one of the god summons with the biggest roles here. She even gets a flashback and a pretty nice dynamic with Anos. He’s close friends with a lot of people but now he gets to be a big brother as well. She is certainly very powerful but when her master has her fight with Anos you know how that is going to turn out. Even literal gods have nothing on the Demon Lord of Tyranny. Arcana could have been at risk of being a little too naive and soft spoken but the show doesn’t play this up too hard so she ends up being fun.

Ahide is one of the big bosses of the final arc and he is strong but he also does spend a lot of time whining. He’s at his best when he maintains his cool, calm and collected outlook. It just never lasts for too long with these kinds of characters as Anos is around to shatter his illusion. Get ready for several tactical retreats as Anos always manages to convincingly crush him. Anos goes harder against him than usual as he really breaks the poor guy.

Then you have Ceris who claims to be Anos’ father. That definitely made for an interesting twist and he ends up being a very mysterious character. Finally someone who might be able to give Anos a run for his money right? Well at the very least I would say that it does make him very interesting. I thought he made for a fun wildcard as he seems to know a lot but stays cryptic during most of his appearances.

Diedrich is one of the first combatants to make a move so you already know that he’s doomed. He was quite powerful though and I did appreciate that he was always up for a fight. He also ends up being a lot more honorable than I would have expected so I ended up liking him. I was expecting him to be one of those crazy corrupt kings but I suppose that’s why you can’t judge a book by its cover. He perhaps overrates his abilities in relation to Anos’ just a tad but I won’t fault a character for being confident.

Golroana is another religious fanatic, the Pope himself! I did think it was pretty interesting to lean so hard on the religious angle for season 2. It makes sense though as this season focuses on how powerful legends and reputation can be for a character. This was especially relevant for Rena in the first arc but plays a role here too. Legends give you power and so likewise everyone believing in a religion would give those folks power. It’s the same concept as the Anos fan club giving him extra power when they sing his songs. So it’s not as if this is a new concept, if anything it has just been actively weaponized here a lot more than we had seen previously. It was a solid thematic element.

Yeah this season was definitely really satisfying. Now I won’t say it’s perfect or anything. it does still have the occasional bout of fanservice but on the whole I would say it’s surprisingly tame. It also helps that in general I love a good power fantasy so I don’t get bored of Anos being so overpowered. I could watch another 3 seasons of him just humiliating everyone and I would still be fine with it. They picked the perfect voice for him and it helps that he’s a generally nice guy. The show actually teaches you valuable lessons about friendship and everything.

Overall, Demon Misfit continues to be a great show. It’s another example of how solid writing will always be enough to clear the day. It may not have the absolute budget of other titles but it doesn’t ultimately need them. The show looks great when it counts like I mentioned earlier but it also absolutely nails the humor aspect. The character cast is also really strong so you have all the elements you need for a great show. This is one I could definitely recommend to anyone looking for a fun anime to watch.

Blue Exorcist: Beyond the Snow/The Blue Night Sagas Review

Yeah that title is a mouthful right? Well in this case each cour got a different subtitle and that’s more or less how they list it on Wikipedia so I figured ehhhhh I’ll write it out like this. Get ready for a pretty long flashback saga thrown in. It’s important to be sure but you’ll probably be more eager to see what is going on in the present so in a sense this will definitely slow your roll quite a bit. We do get more action in this season although I still find myself wanting for more Rin battles. This must be what Edward fans felt like in FMA where you could go 20 episodes without the guy getting a real battle. Some MCs just don’t get all the screentime.

The first half of the season mainly focuses on Shura as we finally see her backstory. She vanishes one day in the present and Rin/Yukio are sent off to find her. There is still a bit of tension here as Yukio is still acting really shady and irrational. Even Rin who is one of the more oblivious guys out there is starting to pick up on this. With Shura being in danger there isn’t a whole lot of time to think about it but the situation will only continue to get worst at this rate. Shura is being controlled by a villain from her past known as Hachiro. Defeating him won’t be easy and it would appear that Shura may die anyway due to a contract. Can she be saved or will the heroes have to make a sacrifice here?

Once your soul is partially owned by a demon then you’re going to be in for a rough time. It really isn’t easy to save Shura as a result and she’s secretly known what was coming up ever since childhood and just didn’t tell anyone so they wouldn’t worry. It’s a heroic mindset so I don’t fault her for that. She probably could have left some kind of word for the rest of the characters so they wouldn’t chase after her but I’m not really sure what kind of wording you could have even tried to say that would have stopped them. Odds are they would see through most lies.

Shura has always been one of the more powerful fighters so it was nice to finally see her in the lead again. For the most part she is no match for Hachiro but she still gets some good action scenes. She is still used a bit for fanservice at times and even this life or death matter couldn’t help but still ship her a bit with Yukio. Definitely a really weak ship especially when Yukio is acting all crazy but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say his actions here really were to help Shura. I like to think that he was totally faking everything he was saying even if it’s lightly implied that to a degree he meant part of it. Forming a pact would grant him more power which is something he desperately wants after all. This arc was able to continue his slow decent into darkness.

I can’t say Hachiro was one of the more interesting villains though. He’s certainly powerful but not particularly ambitious and it’s not like he has a super end game either. He’s someone you don’t want to cross but that’s about it. The heroes are way too lenient the whole time though and should have crushed him at the first opportunity. You will want to roll your eyes by the end of this arc. I would have liked to have seen Rin do more in the fight here but surprisingly he doesn’t play a pivotal role the way you might expect.

Rin still looks really solid throughout the anime though. He is really trying his best both in handling what the past brings in the next arc and even confronting his own feelings for Shiemi. It’s always best to take a pro active approach rather than sulking on the sidelines so that was really good. He may no look as good as he should in the fights by this point in the series but there are asterisks behind some of his worst showings so I cut him a tiny bit of slack here. By the next season I’m hopeful that we will be seeing more of prime Rin since he was down in the dumps for half of this season.

Unfortunately I can’t say that Yukio looks good at all here. At this point he is so jealous over Rin’s abilities that he is trying really dangerous methods to awaken his own. Even risking his life and basically coming close to ending it on the hopes that a life or death situation will manifest his powers. Yukio is willing to go to any level to wake them up including working with the Illuminati which is obviously a bad call. Not to mention pointing a gun at his friend Suguro. By this point in the series Yukio cannot be trusted at all and it’s a shame to see how far he has fallen.

It’s also a drop that has lasted whole seasons by this point so it’s certainly been a while since we’ve gotten to see him as a very heroic figure. Ah well, I guess that just wasn’t in the cards for him this time around. He is without a doubt getting stronger though so he will be hard to deal with. I expect that eventually he will be pulled back into the light, hopefully before he causes too much damage.

Aside from the Shura story, we also get the end of year celebration for the main characters. So we get a classic festival and interpersonal developments with the various characters. Not to mention that Lightning continues to discover more about the blue night massacre which is putting a lot of eyes on him. Lightning is a tough guy and not afraid to ruffle some feathers though, he just continues to work hard on that and doesn’t look back. I think he can be a bit too extreme at times to where he can feel like a villain but I can understand why he is tired of dealing with all the bureaucrats.

One thing to remember about this series is just how corrupt the government is. The “heroes” are working with Mephisto, a legendary demon after all. A lot of the issues they are dealing with in the present are due to crazy unethical experiments in the past. The whole second half of the season deals with a whole lot of that and the government doesn’t seem to have learned their lessons. They are still better than the villains who are trying to destroy everything but by no means are they innocent. You eventually need them to be taken down but right now that’s not really on Rin’s radar. The main characters will stop any evil in front of them but a systematic change is hard to do.

Rin’s various school friends are still around as well of course. Suguro helps Lightning out a lot and as a result he knows a whole lot more about the situation than most of the kids. Of course the more he learns, the more danger he gets put in. This is why Yukio targets him after all and at this point the guy definitely needs to watch his back as well. The villains can come from anywhere after all and Suguro isn’t the most powerful fighter by any means.

Meanwhile Shiemi is still dealing with romance issues. She is just unsure of what love really is and sorting out her feelings has been difficult. I appreciate that she is giving this some real thought rather than falling into anything too quickly. It’s not an easy concept to wrap your head around after all and once you have someone confessing to you, it just gets that much more complicated. It’s as if she’s on the clock now and has to decide much quicker than otherwise. There are so many kinds of feelings you can mistake for love as well so she needs to rule those out. She’s also started taking a route away from being a fighter which is a good decision, although now she’s being forced into a role that might put her in even more danger. Sometimes you just can’t win I suppose.

Shima is still working all the sides and continues to be an interesting wildcard. I can’t say I trust the guy at all though and none of the characters should. When you’re working all of the groups against each other, you have to be extra sure of where his real allegiance is or you will end up getting burned. He’s not the most powerful fighter so Rin could take him in a straight fight but the guy definitely feels like the assassin type so all he needs is a clean shot and he could still be a problem.

Then the second half starts and we have to take a break from the present right when things were getting real interesting. It’s time for Rin to learn the truth about everything that happened in the present. I know this flashback is a real big deal but it is the weakest part of the season in part because of how passive the main characters are. They just allow everything to happen rather than making moves to stop it all.

We see how Shiro grew up and joined the order. How he met a lady named Yuri who would be tasked with watching over Satan and would have a first row seat to how crazy the guy would get. It’s a very twisted dynamic to be sure and who would have guessed that Satan would turn out to be evil?? I would have liked the warning bells to have gone off within the organization a little bit sooner but they’re all just so arrogant and cocky that they could contain him. If there’s one demon you should not underestimate, it would surely be this guy right? Definitely not their best appearance and Satan definitely makes them pay for it.

There are a number of annoying things about the flashback but the would be romance with Shiro and Yuri has to be at the top of it. Ultimately he’s too gruff and stubborn to actually say that he likes her and allows her to keep on seeing Satan and basically sacrifice herself for the mission. Yuri also doesn’t seem to want to be a burden and so she takes on each mission even knowing about the danger. She also begins to care for Satan to a degree which was definitely a mistake. I was glad the series didn’t try to go out of its way to make him seem like a caring guy.

Satan may have started out as a baby but from the start his evil impulses are definitely there. It’s portrayed in a way where he would turn evil no matter who helped to raise him. It’s just in his very DNA and soul. You can’t fix that and I would say this is as clear as that’s going to get. At the same time I would say he loses whatever mystery is left within the guy. We just see him in a vulnerable/weakened position too often to take him seriously. He gets a whole lot of cringe scenes while growing up in the asylum and the fact that the humans were able to placate him for so long is rough. It’s the same thing that happened with Lucifer and I even dare say Mephisto gets hit with this. You can’t take them seriously when Lucifer and Satan are constantly spitting out blood and dying to be reincarnated later on. Then Mephisto takes a gunshot and winds up in the equivalent of the hospital? Yeah he’s probably trolling but cmon now.

Of the 3, Mephisto seems to be the most dangerous with his time manipulation but they all have full weaknesses. Mephisto at this point has been jobbing so hard for so long that I almost wonder if he still remembers how to be a fierce opponent. One thing’s for sure, he’s been playing the long game for a longer time than most other antagonists. He probably gets some kind of record for this. No matter what his end game plan is, I dare say I will find it to be way more convoluted than it needed to be.

I also would say Yuri having kids with him was definitely a mistake. The less said about this ship the better but the whole plot definitely makes you shake your head. Like I said, she took the job way too seriously and her feelings got way too confused the whole time. None of the characters make it out of the flashback saga unscathed. They all make their share of mistakes and all of them seem like self inflicted errors. Any of the characters could have handled it way differently like for Yuri abandoning the order, the Order could have just taken Satan down earlier and worried about the resurrection at another time, Shiro could have stepped in, etc.

The characters really allowed things to get out of hand and of course the ramifications of this are that we got the blue night disaster and all of the current events in Blue Exorcist. This also put Shiro further under Mephisto’s thumb which would really become a life debt. That’s probably one of the toughest things for the heroes in this series which is that they’re basically forced to work for the villains under penalty of death. Rin is really the only hope to shake off these chains if by now he is strong enough to change the world.

The animation for the show is good. Nothing amazing and I don’t think you will be seeing this on lists for best animation but the action works well enough. I expect that once we get a long Rin fight we will get to see the animation explode. When characters have fire powers, it really helps the animation to look extra sharp because the colors work well with the swordplay. If you mess up fire based fight scenes then the studio has a real problem I would say.

As for the soundtrack, they are still using a whole lot of the old tracks from previous seasons so there isn’t much new here. Neither one of the openings are particularly solid. I would say they are okay but definitely not game changers. They really aren’t doing anything innovative here unfortunately. It’s not bad or anything but I do hope they can spice things up a bit in the next season or just use some of the old tracks more. The electronic battle theme and the classic Blue Exorcist themes are right there begging to be used more!

While it feels like we are starting to approach the end of the series, it also feels like the title is dragging its feet a bit. Blue Exorcist has always had some weird pacing issues. It feels like the world is only partially fleshed out. The characters accept some rather odd situations without questioning it. Only Rin seems to know how twisted things are but half the time when he speaks up, Mephisto just threatens him to his face. There is no winning if the world is still ruled by demons and it’ll be interesting to see how Rin finds a solution to this. While trying to obtain more and more power is usually something the villains do, I think it is the heroes who need to crave it this time. That’s the only way they can overthrow the demons and really change things up.

At this point there really should not be much more time for school adventures. I like them as much as the next guy but the world is going crazier and crazier with the demons running amok throughout the country. I need to see some initiative for the heroes as they take them on directly. I also really need to see Rin taking a more prominent role. If they find a way to sideline him again in the next season then I’ll be shaking my head. It’s time for Blue Exorcist to get serious and give us some serious plot progression in the present timeline.

Overall, The season spends a lot of time in the flashback which definitely slows up the pacing. Most of it you can easily guess and piece together from the lore we already had so I think this could have been condensed a whole lot. I just want to know what’s going to happen in the present so the next season has the potential to be the most explosive yet. I would say as always, Blue Exorcist continues to be solid but still lacking things to make it a very good show. It’s a mix of characters and action. The series just has not been ready to turn the corner but perhaps that will change now. If you’re this deep into the series, you should definitely continue in order to stay current. It feels as though the series is starting to approach the climax so I doubt we will be getting another 4 seasons at this point.

Lost in Starlight Review

Whenever I watch a movie and the romance is lazy and/or rushed, I want to watch a foreign movie because they often handle the topic a lot better. Lost in Starlight is an example of that. While it’s not my favorite romance story I’ve seen in recent animated movies, it is still a good title. The movie is also a solid watch overall. I’d consider it a very low key title that isn’t going all out or trying to be explosive but just giving you a solid story with good pacing and no real issues.

The movie starts off with Nan’s mother dying off in space. Unfortunately while the space missions have been going well for humanity, she was the sole victim of the voyage. Her daughter Nan has still decided to pursue a career in going to space but others wonder if perhaps she is just burying her feelings. Her supervisor decides to play it safe and prohibits her from actually going to space. Nan is upset and tries to force her way back in with her scientific knowledge. In the meantime, she meets a guy named Jay who is a bit of a technician. It’s not his true passion though, he used to be a musician but then stuff happened and so he has walked away from it. Can Nan help Jay embrace his musical career once more? As for Jay, can he truly root for Nan to go into space when it will mean that they are separated for a long time?

Relationships will always have some drama and that’s the main dilemma for these two. Now Nan was pretty upfront about wanting to go to space from the jump so naturally I tend to be more on her side with this. The relationship was built with the understanding that she may have to go away. She definitely should have come clean to him the instant she was selected to go to space, but even so it’s not like this came out of the blue. Whenever you get together with someone who has a big life’s passion, you can’t expect that to ever fade. Fortunately Jay does his best to be supportive and handles it better than other leads would have. I was expecting more of a big crash out but for the most part it wasn’t so bad.

I can sympathize with it feeling sad of course, particularly the distance of it all. He can’t just walk over and visit her while she’s in space after all. At least they are able to stay in touch, albeit with a fairly long delay. That’s still far better than having no contact at all. Nan gets into some trouble over there but all in all things go pretty well. The themes of determination and trust are handled really well.

The plot that feels a bit unnecessary is Jay’s music though. I understand that he needed something to do and it was set up as a plot point early on but it was just hard to care as much. Nan was facing a life and death journey in space while Jay is trying to sing. They had to do this at the same time for parallels but when the stakes are so lopsided it just doesn’t work as well. I’d also say the music in this film could have been a bit better in general. It’s not bad but fairly subdued. It’s not the kind of soundtrack that will bring tears to you eyes the whole time.

This may go back towards the theme of this being an ordinary adventure as opposed to some kind of end of the world event but you could still go a bit crazier with the songs. They’re not bad by any means but you won’t remember them quite as well. The animation is pretty solid though. In particular it felt like they were putting a lot of attention on the clothing textures, animating more wrinkles and sharp colors there. So I’d say that works well enough and the movement is good. The film looks a little more faded in that cinematic look a lot of animations go for but it doesn’t hold the movie back or anything like that.

In terms of supporting cast, Jay probably beats Nan here. The rest of the band seemed rather interesting and I wouldn’t have minded seeing more of them. Nan’s best friend gets a decent amount of screentime but she tends to be a little more on the annoying side. She does a good job of cheering Nan up every now and then but some of her pranks can go a bit far. I always thought it seemed a bit annoying to just pick up the phone to try and embarrass your friend when the boyfriend is calling. Nan’s friend is there for her during the serious moments though.

The romance may feel a tad rushed but we did have some montages here and there so at least it’s not like it took place over the course of 5 days or anything like that. Still could have been built up more but at least it’s not a rebound or anything like that. The main two have some disagreements but don’t lose their heads either. It’s why I can call this a good romance all around. With both characters having some trauma (Nan’s being a lot more serious) it was also good for them to be able to talk to each other. Nan ultimately gets some closure in space although I would have liked a long conversation with her Mom. Perhaps that would have been a bit cheesy but I think it could have worked considering all the setup was there.

I was glad we got to space though. It takes a while before we actually see Nan leave so for a bit there you’re wondering just how much time is left. The beginning is definitely fast and very frantic but by the end the pacing slows down. it does help you to get the setup out of the way early though so I don’t have any issues with that. If I could add just one thing to the film, it would maybe be a final interview with Nan to show how far she has really come. We do see that she is over her trauma now but that would be a pretty good ribbon to tie the film from start to finish. This is the kind of film that will likely not get a sequel, but if one ever does appear it’ll be fun to see how that goes.

Overall, Lost in Starlight is a good film. It won’t hit the same levels as most of the anime romance films you watch but Korea’s still off to a good start with this one as a big budget animated title. I’ll look forward to seeing what they bring out next. There is no end to the amount of stories you can write after all and everything about this one was fundamentally sound so I’m not particularly worried. If this movie is up your alley then you should check it out. It’s one of those wholesome films that is hard to dislike and it being so down to Earth and low key is part of its charm.

My Happy Marriage Season 2 Review

It’s time for the return of the rare romantic drama series over the many romantic comedies running around. Typically I’d say that a comedy will always beat a drama but this has been a good show. The first season was fun enough although held back by Miyo herself. Season 2 is a definite improvement but Miyo continues to develop rather slowly and isn’t really being aware enough of her surroundings. She needs to tap into the classic power fantasy elements that have made characters like Jinwoo and Boruto living legends. Miyo has the abilities for this, such is her birth right. So now we need to see her using them.

We’re able to squeeze in a few different arcs throughout this season. The first few episodes are about Miyo finally meeting Kudou’s parents. Naturally this is always a fairly big moment in any romance series. As you would probably expect from Kudou’s demeanor, his mother is quite strict. She begins bullying Miyo in earnest and when Miyo doesn’t fight back, the bullying only intensifies. In a way she seems upset that Miyo isn’t tougher since Kudou’s partner has to be strong. Kudou’s father is a lot more mild in comparison. It’s a fun enough way to start the arc although it’s fair to say that it’s the weakest arc of the season. Miyo just doesn’t handle herself with enough poise here and we should have been done with the bullying stuff by the end of season 1. Nobody should be able to mess with Miyo by this point.

Miyo has come a long way from the days of season 1 where she was a punching bag to every character in existence. She doubts herself less here although she still moves with less poise and authority than she should. Miyo is at
her best when Kudou’s life is on the line as she quickly proves that she doesn’t have a “No kill” rule. That’s a good thing in this kind of verse where it would be difficult to imprison everyone and you have to deal with politics running around. She is slowly getting more used to using her powers in an offensive way as well.

Miyo has a ways to go but if she keeps up her training then she will be a force to be reckoned with. The problem is that she seems to be actively deciding not to practice her abilities and I could see that being a huge problem down the road. When you have special abilities I would argue that it is your duty to practice using them and improving your craft. It’s just not an optional obligation by that point and I need her to start embracing this. Miyo also needs to work on establishing stronger boundaries like not letting Arta constantly pine after her. Shutting that guy down once and for all would be a good thing and I’d also argue that she could probably tone down her attempts to sympathize with everyone.

Sympathizing with a guy who has been on a big mass murder spree just isn’t the right move if you ask me. So Miyo had her ups and downs here but if she continues the trend of getting better after every season then we should be in a good place. Meanwhile Kudou is still a solid character as always who is ready to take Miyo’s side. He defends her from everyone including family so I appreciate his loyalty. He is generally more confident and uses his powers as needed. While his battle intelligence takes a huge hit in this season, he looks good beyond that. It’s a case where his core personality is still really good which is the main important part. He also makes a big decision near the end of the series that was definitely a good one. I can see this being a huge benefit over the next seasons as he will have more free time now.

Kudou’s father Tadakiyo is a reasonably fun character. He takes a more laidback approach as he lets his wife largely do whatever she wants. He is happily retired and just likes to keep the peace. It means that you can’t really count on him in daily affairs but he can fight as needed. He’s not a particularly interesting character as a result but he gets the job done. His wife Fuyu starts off as a big bully but softens up later on. I think the anime’s pacing was a little too quick in this case though as she basically becomes a completely different character within a few episodes. That was a little annoying but I suppose she’s still solid enough. Maybe the writer just figured things would be too hard on Miyo to have to deal with another big bully and so that plot was cut short.

As always Arata is around and I really appreciate the open disdain that Kudou shows him the whole time. Kudou just can’t stand the guy and with good reason. Miyo may be able to overlook a kidnapping attempt and some flirting but not her future husband. Arata seems like one of those guys who just can’t take a hint and is always on the wrong side of every matter. His plan is absolutely terrible in this season and I’m convinced that he is basically just around to hold Miyo back. She needs to cut this guy out already. Honestly he’s just gone way too far for anyone to ever trust him. I don’t see him ever really going up as a character.

We start to get glimpses of the main plot as the legendary Usui declares that he will be taking Miyo. This guy is the most powerful member of the Usuba clan and he can use complete hypnosis to mess with your 5 senses. So as a result he could be anyone or anywhere. Kudou takes Miyo to a guardsman base for her protection where she meets a girl named Kaoruko. The problem is that Kaoruko also likes Kudou and most of the soldiers here are all big bullies for no reason. Will Miyo have what it takes to put an end to this once and for all?

For the record I don’t think taking Miyo to this base is a terribly good idea but no location would be all that safe. Realistically there is no defense against Usui due to his ability. The main plan that would have made sense would have been to expedite her training instead. Still, it’s a good chance for Miyo to make friends and she handles herself pretty well in this arc as she stands up to the bullies and defends Kaoruko. If anything it’s just a really bad look for the army that they are unaware of all this treatment or simply don’t care.

Kaoruko makes for a fun character. She is a solid fighter and doesn’t let all the bullying get her down. I did have some suspicions about her that ended up being well founded but despite that she is okay. It just feels like there is not much of a point to her being in the story just yet so we’ll have to see if that changes for future arcs. Since she seems to be lacking in particularly strong abilities, I don’t see her being very useful in a fight. Her last big appearance is mainly crying at a party so it was a rather sad way to go out.

The big climax happens when Usui finally makes his move and kidnaps Kudou. For once it looks like Miyo will have to be the one to save the day and fortunately she is aided by Kudou’s shikigami. Although what she doesn’t know is that the Shikigami shares all of Kudou’s senses and he gets the memories so Miyo would definitely be rather embarrassed if she realized what was going on. Nevertheless, it’s time for action and the shikigami is unfortunately very weak so she will still have to do most of the heavy lifting on her own. Not like this will be the first time that she has done so though so this ought to be easy. It’s just the first time in a combat sense.

The final arc has quite a bit of action which is nice. It also gives the soldiers something to do as they fight a bit in the subplot. In general I always found the soldiers’ plot to be rather boring compared to the main Miyo plot but at least it went somewhere. The show was hinting early on at a possible argument between Miyo and Kudou when he rats out a protest group but nothing came of it. Maybe it was just showing that she was a bit sympathetic instead of her being upset. Still, it’ll be interesting if that turns into anything.

The soldiers have powers and such but they all feel so weak. Kudou has one right hand man who is important but most of the soldiers are rank and file otherwise. I think their plot will be more interesting as we get to learn about more and more of the specific soldiers within the group. That’ll help balance things out a bit there. Also we’ll need their plot to be good because assuming we don’t get another fighter like Usui for a bit, I’m not sure the romance is enough for the show to hang its hat on.

The romance between Kudou and Miyo does tend to be rather weak. I like the fact that it’s not a rebound or anything like that but Miyo is much too timid and since the two characters are ultra stiff around each other, there isn’t much in the way of banter. You could pull out a random anime from any year and it would probably have a better romantic dynamic between the leads. Maybe that will change in the next saga, hopefully it does. I would imagine this should be a natural part of the development.

As for Usui, he was a good main villain. His overall plan was rather lackluster but he does have a sad backstory. He just mishandled the whole situation and let things quickly get out of hand. The show also may have made him a bit too powerful. There’s a reason why complete hypnosis is used so sparingly in media. There is basically no counter to it. You need a high tier series with FTL fighters like Bleach for a proper fight to really be put into action. Realistically Usui should be able to handle the entire verse here. His ability to be completely invisible is unmatched and of course he is also an expert sword fighter. The show may have used this guy up a little too soon but of course there could be stronger characters in the winds. We’ll have to see.

The animation looks solid here. The show gets to show off a bit more this time since there are more action scenes at the ready. It’s always fun to see the fire and electricity shooting out at the opponents. The hand to hand fights are also solid as are the sword battles. Towards the end some of the fight scenes do make you shake your head a bit though. I get the feeling that the author is definitely not used to fight scenes as much as the romantic ones. For example Kudou’s final fight just doesn’t make sense as he seems to forget object permanence immediately. He knows good and well that his opponent has the ability of illusions and yet he’s shocked every time his attack doesn’t land.

Throughout the fight he learns nothing and makes the same mistakes over and over. It just makes Kudou look absolutely terrible as opposed to making the villain look better. As someone who was said to be the strongest in the verse, I would expect more out of Kudou. Particularly since his abilities have a wide range of destructive effect. So it shouldn’t be particularly hard for him to land a blow by predicting where the villain will be and striking. Yeah it was not a good look for him.

Meanwhile the soundtrack isn’t bad although it’s not particularly memorable. I would like the next season to really introduce some proper battle themes. The theme song is also okay but that’s about it. So you could say that the soundtrack is more of a weak point in general. This is a story that has to thrive more on the plot and fights which is fine, the series is able to do that. A nice soundtrack would be appreciated though, so fingers crossed for the next season.

Overall, This season brought more action which was definitely nice. At times the actual story is still not the most engaging though and the show’s attempts at humor tends to be on the weak side. It’s not really the kind of show where you’ll crack a smile. That said, we’re finally approaching the wedding and it’s about time since that should have happened already. I’m ready for Miyo to embrace her role as a Kudou and really start to show off some confidence. This is her chance to shine and she can’t let anybody stop her. If she continues to develop her powers as well then she should be a real threat. Also a change of scenery could be nice for the characters to get away from the main cities and not be tied down by regulations. Could be a nice way to explore their being a power couple. If you’re looking for a solid romance to check out, this one fits the bill.

Scarlet Nexus Review

The Scarlet Nexus game was definitely a blast and so it’s nice that it got a full anime adaption as well. You don’t see that very often and especially with a big RPG like this. I’d say that the story is adapted pretty well so you can definitely follow along even if the anime is the only thing that you have absorbed from the franchise. It works like any normal anime would so you have all of the context that you could possibly need here.

The story follows two main characters. The first one is Yuito Sumeragi who has to live up to a rather impressive family history. He is determined to succeed on his own merits. He joins the OSF which is effectively the sci-fi police of this region and they fight off monsters as they keep the peace. These monsters are seemingly endless and so far there has not been a way to get rid of them. Perhaps Yuito will be able to accomplish this since he seems to hold some kind of pivotal role in the situation. So much so that people even want him dead.

Meanwhile we have the heroine Kasane who is an experienced member of the OSF. A girl who looks exactly like her saved Yuito when he was a kid but she doesn’t recognize him. Unfortunately it looks like the only way to save the world is to murder Yuito. Can she really murder an innocent person even if doing so would save the world? Her options begin to narrow as something happens to her sister and there is a serious time crunch. Now she just has to make sure that her information is reliable.

There is a lot going on here and to an extent you can even say that it’s like a government conspiracy type of series. The government here knows a whole lot but they don’t like to share intel. Additionally there isn’t only one faction. No that’d be too simple for something like this. So you have the OSF as a whole, then you have Karen who commands a resistance army that breaks away from the OSF. There is also the tribe of the Moon which has a lot of plans and there is even one more group. So you can see why the whole world is in chaos because humanity is absolutely not close to any kind of unified front. They would sooner continue to fight each other than actually manage to save the world.

In this world most people grow up with a kind of psychic power. The type varies as you can have flames, invisibility, etc. If you don’t have one, then you are literally called a dud and will have a hard time doing much of anything. Almost the whole world is set up for people with mental abilities so basic things like signs don’t tend to exist. We briefly see this as one character grew up as a dud and we see one lady get lost at the hospital. It’s a pretty interesting plotline which shows just how hard it is to not have powers when everybody else does. The show doesn’t really have time to get into this at all beyond the one scene though. It would have been nice to have addressed this a bit more.

As per always, the government is the side you don’t want to be on. They run a ton of crazy experiments and are really a big part of the problem. We see that they have ideas on getting rid of the monsters but in the meantime they are making more and basically hiding it. Once you learn the truth behind the monsters, it makes them look so much worse. Even the drugs they use to help Yuito have a dark secret behind them. There was really no coming back for the government from this and quite a few characters are complicit after they know about it.

The common theme from the higher ups is that you have to make some sacrifices but that’s an attitude that I will basically never side with. After a point you end up causing more harm than good. At least Karen’s motivation is one that I can get behind. Basically he is trying to change time in order to save Alice from an untimely death. As always my train of thought here is that if you have the ability of time travel then you have to do whatever you can in order to save someone who has died. You just keep trying over and over and over again until you have pulled this off. You owe the character at least that much.

So Karen is putting the world at risk in order to do this but that’s fine. He’s the standout character of the series because of his determination. He just never gives up and keeps on trying the whole time. The series gives his character a pretty solid end. Ultimately you just have to remember to never give up and keep on trying for as long as you can. He was also the most powerful character in the series by a longshot to the point where the heroes needed considerable amounts of plot armor in order to even stay close against him. The ability to copy all other powers always tends to be a broken one.

As for the main character Yuito, he’s a solid lead. The guy may not be overflowing with personality or anything like that but he is doing his best to help everyone out. Unlike Karen it does feel like Yuito gave up in the end as we saw what happened to him when he grew old. Not a great look for the guy but he did put up with a lot. Yuito just needed to trust in his own abilities a little more. His power level fluctuates a lot based on his emotions and he is also dealing with a psychic illness for most of the series which limits him quite a bit. Things would have been a whole lot smoother for him otherwise.

Kasane definitely handles herself with a lot more poise throughout the series. She is more skilled with her abilities at first although Yuito quickly begins to catch up in that arena. She can be a bit too reckless in jumping to conclusions though. Particularly when she decided to murder Yuito since that just seems like a crazy gamble and of course there are no takebacks. I do like her tough persona though.

Of course you can’t have a full squad without teammates so lets talk about those. First up is Luka who is Karen’s younger brother. His teleportation is handy and Luka would probably be a huge threat in battle if he didn’t have to always go up against someone crazy strong like Karen. Luka knows how to fight well and while he can be a bit timid, he’s a solid ally to have around. Arashi is a lot more fun when it comes to the seniors though. She likes to slack off and knows how to be subtle about it as well. She can move at super speed which you’d think would make her super broken but she doesn’t actually fight that much.

In general the show isn’t the best at showing power levels. Despite how many monsters there are, it feels like the heroes should have an easy time rounding them up. Arashi alone could crush a great number with her speed but she rarely feels much more useful than the average fighter. Her high rank reflects her ability but it’s more lore than showings. Someone like Gemma I can understand having a tough time since he’s more of a brawn guy. Not the fastest or anything and instead relies on his blows to make a difference. I lost a lot of respect for the guy early on when he was shown to be gullible and change sides quickly. He is an example of someone that you do not want to have on your side because you just can’t trust him.

Hanabi serves as the childhood friend role and has some good fire abilities. Despite this, her role is fairly small and she’s mostly just around to fill out the cast. I would have expected her to have had a much bigger influence especially since fire powers are always awesome. Ah well, at least she does look after Yuito. Then we have Kagero who is another one of those guys who can’t be trusted. He gets a fairly big origin story and at least has a much better reason for the deception than Gamma. I tend to like Kagero but the heroes forgave him a bit too easily. Particularly Yuito who really could have gone to town on the guy. Invisibility is a handy power although slightly less handy when you’re always fighting with other psychics.

Kyoka continues the trend of nobody being all that trust worthy here. She has ties to the moon clan and naturally didn’t tell anybody. She was absolutely ready to leave the heroes for dead and had the worst reason for being a traitor. Not only should the characters not have forgiven her but they should have definitely locked her up. You just can’t leave someone like that out in the open or you are really asking for trouble.

Then we have Shiden who talks tough but doesn’t really accomplish anything in the show. He’s super jealous of Yuito and anyone else who has a fancy family and lineage. That’s the kind of petty guy that he is and the show doesn’t give him enough screentime to really grow out of that. Then you have Tsugumi who is the really timid character of the group. That kind of character never tends to be my favorite and she continues in that trend. She’s okay but definitely gets overwhelmed by all the other characters.

Nagi is one of those guys who is a bit on the annoying side. He tries too hard at pretty much everything including flirting. He wants to be more skilled but is quick to fall for brainwashing and getting wrecked. Now you don’t want to be too harsh to a character for that since most would have folded as well but he was really getting in the way the whole time. He made things considerably harder on Yuito than they would have been otherwise. I do like his wind powers though.

Poor Naomi doesn’t get to appear much but she was a nice character. She did her best to be nice to everybody and was a good cadet. Ultimately she was just not put in a situation to succeed. Then we have Fubuki who is one of the commanders so he’s definitely competent and very skilled. Alas, he is rarely on the front lines so it’s not like this helps the heroes all that much against the monsters.

The animation for the show looks good. It’s definitely not a top level budget or anything like that but it flows together well and the animation is solid. Karen talking to his various other selves and then going for the speed blitz was really smooth. The colors can be striking as well and so overall I would definitely give this one a thumbs up. Meanwhile the soundtrack is also good. Nothing amazing but I did like the two openings. The battle themes are also catchy. So in a lot of ways the soundtrack matches the rest of the show. It’s all pretty good but not great. It’s not a show that you’d expect to be winning awards and making the news or anything like that after all.

Overall, Scarlet Nexus will be remembered as a pretty good show and I’d say that’s still satisfying enough for the fans. I had a good time with it and the ending was really solid. The action really ramped up as the series went on and I would say Karen played a major role in making the series as hype as it was. It’s why it is extremely important to have a good villain. He ties everything together here and the general story was also interesting from the jump. As long as you enjoy a good sci-fi title then you will enjoy this one. It’s got those end of the world stakes and everything. It doesn’t feel like the kind of show that would get a sequel but I’d definitely enjoy one.

Teenagers from Outer Space Review

It’s time for a film about an alien invasion and it’s definitely treated as a fairly casual affair. Humanity was absolutely not ready for these alien invaders, not that they usually are. It’s a movie that has aged well and provides good entertainment the whole time. The pacing is not bad and we largely avoid the big romance thanks to the film’s ending. All in all I don’t have many issues with this film as it turned up when it counted.

The movie starts with a few aliens landing on the planet Earth. They all look like humans but they are certainly not the same species. The most ruthless member of the group is Thor who wants to use this planet as a breeding ground for their giant monsters. Derek protests as soon as he sees that there are intelligent life on the planet and so he runs into town to warn people. Thor lets him escape only because it turns out that Derek is the son of their high leader. So they need to take him alive. Will Derek be able to spread the message with the planet or is he already too late?

The tough part for Derek here is the fact that he doesn’t really know anything about the planet. So he’s having to learn a whole lot of things on the fly. He meets a girl named Betty and her kind Grandpa but it’s hard to convince them of the urgency of his mission. This changes when Thor shows up and begins blasting. His disintegration ray can destroy anything that it hits. Derek will have to find a way to disarm him and fast before the whole town is obliterated.

The death count in this film can be surprisingly large at times. There are a whole lot of deaths left and right here Thor basically gets to do whatever he wants to the place. It takes a long time to bring him down and even then the heroes fumble the bag by not taking his weapon or anything like that. Thor lasts way longer than he should because the heroes insist on using kid gloves with him. This is a matter of life or death, you really need to take him out. At one point he is totally unconscious after being shot a few times and nobody capitalizes on this. Very sloppy behavior without a doubt.

Thor does make for a decent villain the whole time though. He’s very confident in himself and is always pressing forward. The guy comes off as being insane right from the jump so you’re not sure how he got such a high ranking position but the possibilities around it are so endless that there isn’t much point in really pondering it. That’s just how this alien group goes. The climax of the film gets quite explosive and definitely doesn’t leave many loose ends for a sequel. Unfortunately this also means that the giant monster himself doesn’t get to appear or do much at all throughout the film. I was looking forward to seeing more of him since the design was really hype. It had a lot of potential but ultimately the budget just wasn’t there to support the film and that is really a shame. Having a giant monster stepping on all of the buildings would have definitely raised the danger level by quite a bit.

We at least know that it was pretty strong though. If not for the pesky disintegrator ray then it might have really had a shot. I regret to inform you that a dog does die in the film though. Early on the villains use the ray on the dog Sparky which was definitely a big mistake. Fortunately the whole scene is pretty fast and you instantly turn to bones which is better than most methods of death. Still unfortunately but that’s the reason why the film didn’t immediately get a negative score or anything like that. It could have definitely been curtains otherwise.

I have to give Betty’s grandpa some respect in this film as well. At first I figured he wouldn’t be doing much of anything here as the guy was really showing his age but in the end he stayed strong. He wouldn’t say where Betty and the others were even under threat of death. He kept on riding around with the crew the whole time and never gave up. That’s the kind of determination you like to see here. He had a lot of energy and in general all of the townsfolk were pretty good. None of them were just going to turn tail and run or give up without a fight. This is the true meaning of unity.

As expected the writing is pretty good here. The script is solid and the pacing is really good. The movie never drags on and you can feel the danger lurking around every corner. At most the only weak part would be when Derek first arrives in town and doesn’t know that the other aliens stuck around. So he doesn’t have a lot of urgency as he rents a room and puts of telling Betty about the dog. The film also narrowly avoided the love triangle since it was looking dicey with Betty and the reporter plus Derek for a while there. That could have docked some points but the characters made the logical move here this time by focusing on the end of the world threat and not getting side tracked. That was a welcome surprise.

Now this is a very old film so even as an alien invasion film you should not be thinking about this in terms of a lot of explosions or anything like that. This is a slow burner through and through and you can almost think of it like a slasher aimed at kids. You have the seemingly invincible villain who slowly approaches each town goer as he obliterates them from existence. He takes no hostages and has absolutely no mercy. The guy just keeps on going and going with no plans to stop. It’s the part of the film that leaves you feeling a bit sad because none of those characters expected that they would die today.

Overall, Teenagers from Outer Space may be very different than what you would have expected based on the title but it’s a pretty good film. I wouldn’t say it has any obvious weaknesses at all. I had a good time with it and the film even has a decent sense of humor at times. If you like these retro films then I would say to definitely check this one out. It’s really got every classic B creature element in here along with the creature itself even if that’s more of an afterthought.

The Care Bears Movie Review

Let me tell you something, you don’t want to mess with the Care Bears. The instant I knew I was going to watch a movie about these guys I knew I was in for a big adventure. Their magical abilities are quite formidable and the only reason they don’t win more fights is due to the genre. These films are for kids and about having fun rather than being big action blockbusters. If they were then this would be a whole different ballgame. The film is good old fashioned fun. I won’t say it’s great or anything but I had a good time with it.

The movie starts with the Cherrywoods telling a story to a bunch of kids. Back in the day there were two kids who were really lonely and they had a rough time of things because they were orphans. So the Care Bears decided to step in and get them to have friends. They took the kids on a tour of their world and helped them learn the true meaning of friendship. The problem is that they didn’t reach a kid named Nicholas in time. This kid ends up meeting a mysterious lady who lives in a book. She quickly begins to trick him into learning the dark arts and generally spreading misfortune into the world. He will now stop the world from caring about anything. Can the Care Bears stop him or is it game over?

The Care Bears have a lot of abilities like powerful lasers and high tech gadgets but they are lacking in confidence. For the most part they don’t want to deal the evil spirit directly. So throughout the film you see the Care Bears running around and panicking. They are definitely not the best allies to have on your side since they don’t really inspire any kind of confidence. At one point the two kids have to fend for themselves as Nicholas chases the around because none of the care bears are really doing anything.

Now granted, the world wasn’t in a very caring mood as the care levels went down but you’d still expect the bears to be able to do something. Instead they take a back seat in their own film for a while there. The movie isn’t too concerned about delivering a great story and it’s more about the vibes so lets talk about those. For starters the animation is pretty good. The hand drawn aspect still works pretty well after all these years. The scenes are very smooth and easy to follow. The action scenes that we do get look pretty good too.

The soundtrack is more of a mixed bag. Some of the songs really don’t work at all while some others are okay. Just don’t go in expecting anything too crazy here. As for the script, it’s fine enough. Everyth8ing can be a bit exaggerated but that works well enough. One character even gets a massive plot twist at the end which shows how he has really changed as a character. That was pretty wholesome all things considered. He really came a long way from when he was a kid.

The more I write about the story the more I have to admit it was a bit all over the place. At the same time that is part of the fun I suppose. This movie isn’t even worried about trying to have a huge narrative or telling a complete story. It’s just messing around and having a good time. I also give it points for not even trying to introduce the various care bears beyond their name. You either get the drift of what’s going on or you don’t. It all comes down to that.

I also appreciated the villain being straight up evil and this wasn’t all some kind of misunderstanding. She wants to achieve her ambitions and has no problems manipulating whoever it takes to complete that. That kind of unfeeling villain works well in the Care Bears as a complete foil to everything that the main characters represent. Her design was good and while it would have been nice to have had an explosive finale, I suppose that’s not really what this movie is all about.

The concept of the Care Bears will pretty much always beat the execution but perhaps one day that can change. In the meantime the important thing is that the film is fun and you’ll have a good time. I do wish they would skip the narration at the beginning though with the story book plot device because it does spoil the ending. I know it’s basically a foregone conclusion that things will go well but at the same time you still don’t have to actively show it like that.

Now will this end up making you a huge fan of the Care Bears themselves? Eh, probably not. They still aren’t super good at their jobs and basically get lucky a lot of the time. Considering the crazy amount of technology and super powers that they have, they should have a better handle on things. It’s another reason why the Ponies are higher since they do generally have solid control over the kingdom. They don’t have to rely on humans to bail them out every time as that would just be plain embarrassing.

Overall, The Care Bears is a good film. I won’t say it’s great or anything like that but by the end you will feel pretty satisfied with your experience. The Key Bear even came in clutch when it counted. The world of the Care Bears may be a deadly one as one town can completely tip the balance of power one way or the other but at the same time it also shows just how much difference one person can make. I don’t think the franchise will ever be at the level of My Little Pony or Strawberry Shortcake going forward since the premise just isn’t quite as hype but if you haven’t watched this movie yet, you should change that.

Saint Seiya: Episode G Review

Episode G is a title that I’ve been reading for many years. The final chapter was finally translated and so I can say that the journey is complete! I look forward to starting the G sequel sooner than later. This one definitely had some ups and downs as the overall story quality is top tier but the art does hold it back quite a bit. It is definitely one of the messiest styles that I’ve seen and I would consider it to be sub par. It does actually hold the manga back which is rare for any title. Even when I’m not super pleased with an art style, it is usually fairly decent. Well, at the end of the day this is still a great manga and I was satisfied with how it turned out.

The manga takes place a little before the main series which is fun to think about. It may be a little hard to believe but just roll with it. Aiolia is treated like an outcast by the rest of the saints since Aiolos betrayed them all to save Athena. Aiolia doesn’t know why his brother did this and remains confused in the present. He does have a loyal retainer in Galarian who helps him in finding temples and dungeons with monsters to destroy. Aiolia even bumps into a girl named Lithos who ends up becoming a close friend. At least he has these two to support him and Aiolia is determined to win the trust of his fellow Saints and prove himself although it’s not to be their friend since there is a lot of resentment on his side as well. Well the time for waiting may be past now as the Titans have awakened. These fighters have incredible abilities and above them are various fighters who are named after planets. They intend to destroy everything and are led by Kronos, one of the most powerful beings in all of creation. Without a proper Athena to command them, will the Gold Saints be able to put aside their differences and take these guys out?

So like I said before, the art here is definitely real crazy. For starters, most of the characters are drawn to look like girls. Aiolia is the biggest offender here as they took a lot of liberties with his design. It looks like the artist did this to make the fights smoother as everyone can be really off model the whole time. This lets the series show us massive energy blasts as characters stretch across whole pages with their poses. It’s definitely an interesting approach but ultimately a poor one if you ask me. It can be really difficult to make out what is happening in a fight.

The longer you read the series, the easier it gets but the fact that you have to make any effort is a problem. Manga art should always be clear enough where you can seamlessly read the pages as you keep going. If you have to stop and ponder what you’re looking at then it can only be said to be poor art. That should just not be happening and with proper artwork this really would have been super epic. It’s a title that isn’t afraid to shake up the plot unlike Saint Seiya: Next Dimension.

The fact is that this series had a whole lot of fun with new situations. For example in the pre arc we see some explorers going through ruins. Aiolia is tagging along as a mysterious guide and it’s just fun to see the heroes walking around and doing normal things beyond the fighting. I’ll take nonstop fighting of course but there is something to be said for putting the characters in new environments. We even get a cop/secret agent but things don’t go well for him here. At the end of the day Saint Seiya is one of those verses that is incredibly powerful so a human is not going to last very long without protection.

Aiolia does have two followers who aren’t the strongest and so he is always prepared to help them out. Galarian is one of them although the guy can fight since he used to be a big saint candidate. The guy hasn’t been in the ring for a while though so it is fair to say that he has weakened a whole lot. It was nice to see Aiolia have such a loyal follower like him. The other is a girl named Lithos and she is an ordinary girl all the way. So she can’t fight and is definitely someone that has to be protected. She gets written out for most of the series but does show up again near the end.

The introduction chapters showing this different side to the characters is fun because then we eventually do get to the nonstop fighting marathon that the franchise is known for. Once the heroes take the fight to the Titans for the rematch, that is the rest of the series. It takes up a massive chunk of the title as every character gets their own fight which is usually a few chapters long and then we get the final saga where they all get one more fight. I can guarantee you that you don’t have to worry about a lack of action or anything like that. This title has got you all the way.

While the artwork is hard to follow, it does get the scale across. The Saints are supposed to all be universal threats with unlimited powers as they invoke the names of planets and universes in their attacks. Well this title doesn’t hold back on that at all as the characters use more and more powerful attacks the whole time. This is where it’s hard to believe that it takes place before the main series because of the power ups that they all get. Aiolia for example learns how to use the 7th and 8th senses which in the main series only Virgo Shaka could go as far as the 7th sense. Tauros learns how to go beyond just using defense, Camus learns how to use his ice better, etc. It would have made a lot more sense for this to have been after Hades although that would present some issues as well.

The Gold Saints who are here by the end of the main series just don’t feel like they would lose to a bunch of Bronze Saints. I would have a hard time believing it at least. They also learned how to respect each other and fight as a team which doesn’t quite track. When looking this one up, it’s listed as an alternate timeline but even so I don’t think that would remove any of the issues that I’ve mentioned.

Ah well, the cool factor is more important than the timeline anyway. As for Aiolia, he was a good pick as the main character here. Aiolos will always be the character who really steals the show for me but Aiolia has done a good job of being his successor. I definitely would not say that he is as good as Aiolos or even that close but he has a lot of personality and determination. He is at least trying to make the Gold Saints more accountable and heroic. Most of the others are content to just follow orders and look the other way which is not a good way to do things.

Aiolia has a good amount of similarities with Seiya and that is always a good sign. Aiolia makes sure to protect his friends and by the end he saves the world first and then works on redeeming the villains. He never loses sight of his own goals and has some pretty good speeches. I definitely had no issues with him. His light based techniques are all a lot of fun as well. Well, electricity may be more accurate but he’s also known for being ultra fast. He is easily able to exceed the speed of light which is no small feat.

In true Saint Seiya fashion, the villains will sometimes no sell the attack anyway or move even faster. That’s just how it is here, the villains are super arrogant and it’s up to the heroes to put a stop to that. The villains will literally close their eyes before attacking which is always awesome. That’s not to say that the heroes are lacking in confidence at all though. They have their moments of bragging a whole lot as well. Most of the Gold Saints end up getting a big reality check here since they figured this would be easy and then end up taking a ton of damage.

To an extent I’d say a valid critique you can have here is that a lot of the Saints are written very similarly. They show up to fight their opponent, brag a whole lot, and then eventually win. They each have very noble dialogue by the end of it and eventually admit to Aiolia that he did good. There seems to be less time to really differentiate them unlike the main series which did this very easily. This series could have worked a bit harder on that but it is a minor thing. So they all sound really hype the whole time? It could be worse.

Even then Virgo Shaka and Gemini Saga really stand out as being the strongest. If I had to give a third shoutout it would be Shura who got to show off a bit more than the other Gold Saints. Without him then the heroes would have really been in trouble. He got to show why his invincible sword is still the strongest out there. Even in the main series I really liked his techniques because it’s all him just striking really hard. Unlike Tauros you really got the idea that he was the strongest.

On the villain side, Kronos was definitely the standout character. Much like the Gold Saints, his group of fighters were mainly more on the generic side. Saint Seiya is a franchise that loves its repetition and this series was no exception. Each villain would run in screaming about how he/she is a god and shouldn’t have to fight such mild mortals. It’s all very impressive the first few times and then you watch as they are defeated time and time again. Some handle their defeat with a little dignity and grace while others go down yelling. For the most part they feel more like obstacles than proper villains.

I’d probably blame the artwork here again since the designs seemed pretty good but got cut out a lot. I’d say the pacing is responsible for the rest since they just aren’t around long enough to really leave an impact. The exception here is Kronos who really gets a lot of screentime. I liked him. We got to learn more about him thanks to his temporary amnesia and then after that he became a big villain.

On the surface he may seem like another “I wanna destroy the world” kinda villain but it makes sense because this guy has been around for a long time and has really seen just how terrible humanity has been. After a while you would definitely be ready for it to all be over. This guy has the power to do it so why not right? It can get harder and harder to root against the enemies based on just how bad humanity is. Also when it’s a quick finish like this, it’s not like it’ll hurt much. So technically we’re rooting for the heroes but it’s not like I disliked Kronos or anything like that. He was a pretty fun villain.

I also liked the abilities that the villains had. Something called Duramis which works like a Saint’s Cosmos. It’s basically the same thing but what this set of gods uses. It makes sense that each set would call the energy something different and further helps to expand the universe. The Saints having to each take down actual gods is a real feather in their cap as well. The franchise always goes really high tier and I can definitely appreciate that.

Overall, Episode G is a fun series. It’s definitely very light on plot as it is all about all of the characters slamming into each other and battling it out but that’s all I really need. In that sense it’s a whole lot like the Dragon Ball Heroes titles. You’re reading it for the fights and nothing else. Nothing wrong with that and it’s a fun way to do a spinoff. I would definitely recommend checking this one out. Even factoring in the art, I had a great time here. Hopefully one day it’ll get an anime so we can really experience the fights in their full glory. I’ll be checking out the sequel pretty soon so I look forward to seeing how that one stacks up. Can it beat the original? It’s got way more chapters but way less volumes so we’ll see how that turns out.

Firestarter (2022) Review

This review is of the TV-14 edited version of the film. All thoughts below should be addressed as such as a review of the unedited version would likely be more negative.

Firestarter is one of those films that has some interesting ideas but misses on the execution. It also has one of the most groanworthy endings in a minute. So this was definitely not going to make Firestarter the next big hit but hopefully at some point someone is able to really crack the code here. I also feel like Charlie was severely nerfed in this version but it’s been a while since I saw the first film.

The movie starts off with Charlie using her fire powers and then we get a bit of a disjointed origin as we see her parents going through a bunch of experiments. I thought this was a pretty interesting way for us to learn the info because everyone already knows how they would get their powers. So we should just jump around instead of watching it in real time. In the present, Charlie makes a big mistake and blows up part of a school so the heroes are now on the run from the evil organization. Will they be able to escape or has their luck finally run out?

This film is a reminder of just how hard it is to live your life on the run. Imagine being careful for years and years only for 5 minutes to wipe all of that out. It’s why you need to train and be ready to fight off possible invaders. This is my main problem with Andy who takes the route of wanting Charlie to live a normal life. So even knowing that there are powerful entities trying to reach her, he doesn’t make a move. Really not a smart move at all. I can blame him for a lot of what happened and the same goes for Charlie.

Vicky is probably the most tragic figure since she wanted Charlie to train and just got overruled the whole time. She should have definitely been training too though and would have ended up doing better during her battle. Since she had an injury the deck wasn’t stacked in her favor to begin with but a little extra power could have definitely helped out here.

Meanwhile I can’t say that I was ever a big fan of Andy. When it comes time for him to fight, he really doesn’t look very good. I think it was a big mistake to put his energies into illusions instead of directly trying to press Rainbird during their mental battle. Both ways keep the guy preoccupied only the latter has an actual chance of defeating him as well. It just makes a lot more sense in a fight. Andy’s abilities were limited enough where it definitely didn’t seem like he would win anyway. His final decision involving using his powers one last time was not bad though. I think given the circumstances it made sense even if it was a bit of a controversial moment.

Now for Charlie, she is just a kid so I’ll give her some props but that’s about it. She still should have known better than to try and call the cops. Blowing up in the school also wasn’t a good moment. She definitely needed more training but I would have expected her to have a better handle on things. Taking down an animal was not a good idea either. Yes, the film squeezed in animal violence which was not a good idea. The film uses it as foreshadowing for another moment but it was not good.

The movie lost more points there as well. But back to Charlie, she gets a lot of hype for her powers improving more and more but then by the end she isn’t able to melt past a basic hazmat suit? That was one of her worst moments here because that’s way too basic of a defense. If her flames are on pace to be nuclear, then she should be blowing these guys away. Then with the one opponent that she should definitely be trying to blow away, she ends up holding back. Without getting into specifics, it’s why the ending is pretty bad here.

It just doesn’t make any sense and weakens the main character as a result. It feels like several characters would have definitely been let down there. Also having her need any kind of help in the end takes away from her as a powerful weapon. It doesn’t seem like Charlie lives up to her own hype here. She gets some cool moments in breaking into the main villain’s base and taking on a lot of opponents but she also lets her guard down a bit too easily.

As for the main villain Jane, I almost thought she was a parody for a little while there. She is extremely unprepared and has no good plans throughout the whole film. Even by the end the way that she goes down is pretty embarrassing. She tries threatening a retired doctor and he doesn’t take her seriously either. She had no aura the entire time and since she is supposed to be the leader of this super serious mystery group, it doesn’t make the group look very good either.

Finally we have Rainbird who is back in the field one more time. It’s hard to say why he has much of a change of heart though because the whole time he is introduced as a rather ferocious fighter. It’s not like he ever loved the organization given how they tossed him aside but he also doesn’t seem like someone who would have had a lot of mercy either. By the end he should have kept on shooting and that would have opened the door for the heroine to counter and blow him away.

The secret organization also has a ton of pull with how they were able to jump in even after several police officers were gunned down and take control of the situation. Feels like that’s the kind of situation that would have gotten them forcibly shut down. The leader does reprimand Rainbird on this but otherwise it doesn’t look like there was more fallout. This is a story that could probably improve with a TV show approach since it could flesh out the world a lot better.

The soundtrack’s pretty solid for the movie at least. It has a bit of a mysterious air that works well with the scenes and it’s memorable. That’s more than you can say for most live action films so that is immediately a big win here. The special effects aren’t bad either. The fire looks pretty fun even if a little overly dramatic at times. The film can be randomly violent at times with some of the half burned scenes but for the most part isn’t super intense. Just enough to be noticeable though.

Overall, Firestarter is not a good movie. I would definitely say to give it a pass because it fumbles the ball on too many areas. It’s got an interesting premise but that’s just not enough for me to recommend this one. You have to get past the animal violence and the ending first which is a fairly tall order. You’re better off just watching the Fantastic Four instead to see someone using their fire abilities really well. Another version of this should have the kid be a bit older so then we could have a proper superhero type film.

The Imaginary Review

It’s time for a film about the powers of imagination. It’s a pretty nice film that even has a little more intensity to it than you might expect. I never got into the habit of having an imaginary friend when I was younger but I know that was a pretty popular thing for a while there. So a whole film around that premise seemed like a pretty interesting idea. I would have liked the climax to have been extended a little but all in all you’ll have fun.

The story begins with introducing us to Amanda and her imaginary friend Rudger. In this world, imaginary friends can only be seen and make contact with their human partners. They are real but exist on a different plane from the rest of humanity. When the human dies, the friend will die as well and the same goes for if they are forgotten. The only way around this is to reach a nexus of imagination such as a library. Amanda and Rudger have had a lot of fun times together but one day Rudger is attacked by a mysterious girl in black as well as Mr. Bunting. He is nearly devoured but gets saved by Amanda at the potential cost of her life. She is now in a coma and Rudger can only survive in the outside world for a day without her. Can he find a way to wake her up and stop the villains?

I was definitely glad that we had a villain here since it adds a big level of danger to the whole film. That sad, the film does have a hard explaining how the heroes aren’t destroyed in every encounter. Keep in mind that he is a grown adult with supernatural abilities but he gets shoved and tripped a whole lot in the battles. The girl of shadows has super speed and some strength but often gets overpowered at the wrong moment. Each time the villains lose you couldn’t help but think that they probably should have won. Mr. Bunting’s absorption technique is also comically slow to the point where it takes whole minutes to actually devour anyone. It’s no wonder that he is constantly interrupted.

That said, he is still hyped up as the master villain with all kinds of reality warping abilities so I would have liked to have seen him prove himself a bit more here. Towards the end we get a fun battle of imagination which I would say is the part you’ve probably been waiting for and it’s really over in the blink of an eye so you don’t get to properly enjoy it for as long as you would like.

The movie can also have a bit of a tonal problem but that’s normal when the main characters are kids. They don’t react quite as seriously to the dark moments as you would expect. Like Amanda grinning and laughing with happy music when they are nearly destroyed in the climax. You gotta overlook a little bit but with a better soundtrack the film would be that much more epic. There are a ton of really intense scenes here after all and the animation handles them well.

It may not be a top tier production but the film looks good enough. It’s not really an action film so it’s not going to be showing off a lot of special effects there. The music is more on the underwhelming side, no real tunes that you will be humming or singing afterwards. As for the writing, I’d say it was good enough. The film is fast so the pacing is good and it definitely doesn’t drag on at any point in time.

As the main character Amanda is fairly decent. She’s not the most well behaved little girl out there and definitely makes her share of mistakes but she tries her best. She did end up defending Rudger near the end when it counted so I give her full credit there. Without her he would have been taken out sooner. She did put him in a tough position to start with but at least helped to make it up.

Rudger is also solid as he is determined to help Amanda throughout the film. I appreciated his dedication as the other characters would have had him give up a long time ago. He was the one who had to keep on pushing for this and otherwise oblivion was the only outcome. He could maybe learn how to fight a little better but I suppose there wasn’t much time for a training montage.

At the spirit realm we meet Zinzan and Emily among some other characters but they weren’t too high. Zinzan wasn’t helpful when it counted. Despite all of his wise verbiage and all, he didn’t do anything against Bunting and didn’t show up when it counted. Nice enough but not dependable. Likewise Emily was disappointing when she didn’t want to hear about Mr. Bunting. Not realizing that he was real was a pretty big L especially with how scared everyone was of him. You wouldn’t see that for a simple rumor and so she ended up looking rather naive. It’s the world of imagination, it would stand to reason that some kind of antagonist is out there.

The most disappointing character had to be Amanda’s mom Lizzie by the end though. She looks unrealistically slow on the uptake by the end of the film. Imagine that you go to your daughter’s hospital room and the weird stalker is in there and suddenly she’s out of the coma but in a ton of pain? You should have a lot of quick reactions, most of them being violent but instead she just keeps asking what’s wrong and why Bunting is in there. Then even once she starts to get clued in on the supernatural elements, she refuses to say the name that Amanda and the others are begging her to say.

The whole scene will have you rolling your eyes because it just takes her an eternity to piece the two things together. It’s not rocket science, this should be 1-2-3. So while the film didn’t intend for her to be annoying or unlikable, that really took a big shot against her character. That was just really rough. Meanwhile the girl in shadows stepped up a lot quicker and for her quick character moment at the end. I’d rather she stay super sinister and just crush everybody but I could see how that would get old after centuries and centuries of being around. You’d want a break at some point.

Overall, The Imaginary is a pretty fun film with some nice concepts. Without the villains I don’t think it would have been quite as enjoyable but with them it’s a good adventure. It might be lacking a little in replay value but the initial watch is fun and creative. If you want to revisit your days of being a kid and enjoying your imagination then this is a solid flick to check out. You won’t be forgetting the villain any time soon!
