Essential Warlock Volume 1 Review

9780785163312_p0_v1_s260x420

The Essentials is a series of large collections of comics that Marvel puts into a big book. One unique feature of these Essentials, is that the comics are now published in black and white. I don’t think that was a great move, but reading it in black and white is still enjoyable. This collection brings together a lot of Warlock comics, as well as issues of other series in which he appears.

The collection mainly deals with his adventures on Counter Earth and the rise of the Magus (Which leads into the Thanos arc that concludes the collection. On his adventures in Counter Earth, he meets alternate versions of other marvel characters like Reed Richards and Dr Doom. In this world, they never obtained supernatural abilities and Dr Doom was a good person. Warlock had to find the Man Beast and stop him from corrupting more and more people. The President definitely didn’t make things easy, but a group of teenagers allied with Warlock to help his cause.

After Warlock left counter earth, he found out about the Magus whose evil had been spreading across the cosmos. Warlock knew that he couldn’t stand a chance in a battle with the Magus at the time, but he went to go challenge the Magus, meeting up with Gamora, Thanos, and Pip along the way. The best part of this arc was easily Thanos’s battle against the Magus. Both of these titans wielded immense power and Warlock felt pretty outmatched against them.

Finally, Thanos revealed his ultimate plan and Warlock had to band together a group of powerful allies to stop him. The Avengers naturally came to take down Thanos and his vast army of alien ships. If their might wouldn’t prove enough, they had backup in the form of The Amazing Spider Man and the Thing.

Warlock made for a pretty good main character. He definitely goes through a lot of development during the course of these comics. At first he’s a pretty optimistic person who’s ready to help the humans overcome evil. Eventually during the Magus arc, he starts to have some pretty serious doubts about the whole thing. He went insane and his gem started to have a will of its own. After he finished with the Magus, Warlock now has a very convoluted mind. He could remember things that occurred in the future and past which hadn’t happened anymore due to time travel, but he also remembered what did happen. Not to mention that both things overlap at some points including Warlock’s battle against himself.

It’s only natural that all of this got to him and Warlock lost all of his cheerfulness and optimism. He withdrew to himself and became a pretty mysterious individual. During the final comics he’s in a state of rage and is ready to avenge the lives of his friends at the hands of Thanos. Warlock initially never used his gem unless he had no choice, (Since the gem steals a person’s soul, meaning that they will never get to pass on to the next world) but eventually he starts to use it more and more. In the final comics he had begun to use it without hesitation and had a fierce battle with Thanos. Warlock is finally able to experience true peace at the end of the collection and his journey was over.

Along the way Warlock met with other fighters including: The Hulk, The Avengers, The High Evolutionary, The Collector, and Spider Man. For the most part they all looked pretty good. Spider Man had a pivotal role in saving the universe and that window of opportunity was opened by the Avengers. The Collector gave Adam Warlock an incredible fight (Which may have been disastrous for Warlock if the Gardener hadn’t stepped in) and the High Evolutionary kicked everything off with the creation of Counter Earth. From the main characters, Pip the Troll was the only one that I especially disliked. He’s not my type of character and he’s not the best sidekick that a guy could have. He makes a lot of jokes and talks tough, but it can only get a character so far.

Overall, the Warlock collection is pretty good. Granted it’s not the most exciting comic collection out there, but it is pretty solid. Their is a lot of cosmic action in the 2nd half and you’ll meet some high tier villains like the Star Thief, Thanos, and the Magus. The plot is also pretty interesting and I’d recommend this collection to all comic fans.

Digimon Adventure Review

digimon

Digimon is a very popular franchise that naturally became Pokemon’s rival. Both of them deal with Trainers and their (Digi or Poke)mon as they travel across the world. While there are many similarities, there are also some pretty vast differences. Digimon has many different series (Or seasons if you prefer to break them up that way) but this review will just be talking about the original. The main characters of this series are Tai, Matt, Sora, Mimi, TK, Kari, Izzy, and Joe.

Digimon Adventure has several arcs including: The Devimon arc, The coming of Myotismon, and the rise of the Dark Masters. Like most shows, Digimon gets progressively better the farther the series goes. The Devimon arc was pretty good and the two arcs after that one were both great. Most of the episodes are pretty fun and intriguing to watch with very few underwhelming episodes.

Let’s go through the Devimon arc first. Since this arc is the first one to begin in the series, Devimon won’t appear to be as formidable as other villains, but was definitely a powerful way to start the series. At the time, the DigiDestined (What the heroes call themselves) only had access to their champion forms, but they were still pretty tough. Greymon will always be remembered as one of the most iconic digimon out there. I will go through each of the characters and their digimon later on in the review. One thing that held the arc back was the lack of a great soundtrack. The Devimon arc is the only one to not feature the iconic theme song during each digievolution, taking away most of the epicness from the transformations.

After the Devimon arc, the next big event was the Myotismon plot. To shake things up, not only was the digi world under attack, but even the human world fell prey to his evil schemes. Myotismon had a legion of powerful warriors under his command such as Dark Tyrannomon and Mega Seadramon. Not to mention that Myotismon was already a very powerful digimon and didn’t need any help to give the heroes a hard time. His power was that of an ultimate level and in his Venom Myotismon form he could give Mega level digimon a hard time. This arc had a much larger sense of danger and the threats became more dire as the humans got thrown into the battle.

Finally, we have the Demon Masters part of the series. Picking up immediately after the DigiDestined deal with the Myotismon threat, the heroes find themselves heading back into a far different digiworld. The Dark Masters took no time in converting the once happy digital world into a dark and miserable place. At this point in the series the heroes all had ultimate level digimon (Tai and Matt even obtaining Megas) so they weren’t that afraid of what was to come. The Dark Masters quickly humbled them and defeated the heroes 4 times in rapid succession. Realizing that they need to get stronger, the heroes head off to save the digital world once and for all, but are the Dark Masters really the villains that they should be worried about? This part of the series was easily my favorite and the stakes had never been higher.

Since Tai is the leader of the DigiDestined, we’ll look into his character first. He’s definitely got the makings of a true main character and while he doesn’t tend to give orders, he can definitely lead a team well. It would be hard to find a better main character around and he’s also got the best digimon of the DigiDestined. Agumon is the name of his rookie form and he transforms into Greymon, Skull Greymon, Metal Greymon, and War Greymon. War Greymon is easily his best form, but I’ve always liked Greymon and his Nova Blast as well. Together Tai and Greymon are almost unstoppable!

Matt is Tai’s rival and he’s also a pretty good character for the most part. I feel a little bad for him since his Gabumon is no match for Agumon in the longrun, but Matt always gives it his all. I can’t say that I’m a huge fan of the rest of the DigiDestined. Sora is alright, but she never really stood out with a really great fight scene or memorable line. Izzy is the smart kid, but I would prefer if he was known as the strong whizkid so that he could get some more fights. Mimi doesn’t tend to fight enough and she’s certainly not as upbeat and commanding as Tai. Joe could learn a thing or two from Matt about toughness and strength of character. TK and Kari get a pass since they’re only kids, plus both of them get significantly better in the sequel series. Still, that’s not to say that any of them are really awful characters. They’re decently alright and they have their moments. Tai and Matt just happen to steal the show in this series.

The soundtrack for Digimon is awesome and you won’t forget the theme song once you’ve seen the show. The lyrical songs that take place during the fights are definitely not that good, but the regular digimon theme that plays during the transformations easily makes up for it. The fights in Digimon are always pretty fun and the animation for them still holds up to this day.

Digimon is a series that I strongly recommend and I would easily say that it’s one of the best anime of all time. With a solid 50+ episode count, there is plenty to watch and rewatch. In the future I know that I’ll be checking it out again myself. So, go out there and buy the complete series, after all you can never watch too much digimon!

Iron Man 3 Review

iron-man-3-poster-us

After the record breaking film that was The Avengers, there was definitely a lot of pressure on Iron Man 3. It would be the first film in the next wave of Marvel films that would come out before Avengers 2. Not to mention that the 2nd Iron Man film’s reception hadn’t been quite as good as the 1st.

The plot for the Iron Man 3 film was loosely based off of the Extremis storyline from the comics. The movie is drastically different from the comics with the only similarities being the Extremis serum and some of the character names. Dr. Aldrich Killian gets a decently large role in this film and we can’t forget about the Mandarin. One thing about the plot is that it does drag on for a while. The intro featured Tony Stark in the past, but was pretty boring and a whole third of the film had almost no point (Snow scenes where he meets a kid) If the film had cut out a good 30-40 minutes, it probably would have helped the pacing a lot. The interaction between the characters is definitely the weakest in the trilogy and you’re going to find yourself waiting for an action scene to pop up. Not to mention that there isn’t really a character that you can find yourself rooting for. Tony Stark is fun to watch during certain scenes, but others make you dislike him.

Pepper Potts and Rhodey get to appear in the film with very different roles. Rhodey looks pretty awful the whole time and his scenes definitely keep up the whole “War Machine always loses” trend. The way he lost made him look like a complete amateur and while they attempt to cover it up by giving him great aim with a gun, it just wasn’t enough. Pepper Potts is mostly just there for most of the film, but her role gets better during the climax. Definitely the best that she’s looked in the trilogy. Happy Hogan gets a bit of a role, but he’s pretty outmatched the entire time and he was only okay. He definitely could have handled things a bit better, but he was a lot better than in the first two films.

Tony Stark is portrayed as an inexperienced hero in this film. He’s technically a genius, but he doesn’t show it that much as he underestimates his opponents. He threatens the Mandarin on live TV and even tells the guy where he lives. It was Definitely a good thing to do and I’m glad that Stark made the right move, but the rest of his plan was pretty awful. Not only did he fail to evacuate his home, but he took the time to test out a suit that didn’t have any combat capabilities at the time. His home also didn’t have any security around it, so it was a walk in the park for enemies to come in and wreck the place.

The plot hits its low point when Iron Man goes to a snowy area and meets up with a kid. You don’t need to remember his name because the actual character doesn’t have much of a purpose in the film. Tony Stark keeps having stress attacks and it makes for a very bad subplot. Tony is not the kind of character who would let the near death experience (In the end of the Avengers movie) traumatize him like that. I really don’t think it would happen and he later gets over it for pretty much no reason. Stark also upgrades his tech so that it will respond to him whenever he needs it. Now he doesn’t have to even carry the armor with him as long as he can move to activate them from afar. It’s a decent improvement, but the film doesn’t exploit it this fact that much. He uses it plenty of times, but we never get to see it used that well for combat situations.

Alright, let’s finally start talking about some of the film’s positives! The villains in this film are a huge step up from the first two. The Iron Monger and Whiplash weren’t much of a threat and could barely hold their own. The Extremis meta humans provided Iron Man with a much better fight and they could do some fatal damage. The thing is, they were possibly too powerful. Iron Man couldn’t keep up with them at all and spent most of the film getting knocked around. If he had kept his traditional armor (From the first two films and Avengers) I think that the battle would have gone very differently. As it was, his new armors seemed to be far weaker and are not durable at all. One good shot would end just about any of his armors. Iron Man has to defeat most of them with good ole fashioned ingenuity, but most of his wins are a bit far fetched in the film. Either way, it’s better to have a villain that’s too powerful than one that’s extremely weak. The extremis villains made for epic fights and I wouldn’t mind seeing some of them in Avengers 2.

I haven’t mentioned the Mandarin much, but there isn’t much to say about him. At first he’s one of the most generic villains of all time and he’s basically a carbon copy of Bane. After his “epic” plot twist, you’ll either see him in a new light or just facepalm at the movie. I can’t say that I minded the twist, but if they had done it to a character that I actually had liked, I would have doomed the movie at that very moment. Killian gets the biggest role as far as villains go and he was alright. He was definitely a powerful opponent, but I can’t say much for his personality.

The climax is the best part of the film and it’s what saved Iron Man 3 from getting a mediocre score. Stark and his army of Iron Men team up to take on the Extremis super humans. The armors put up a brave fight and we get to see a lot of cameos that will make fans smile. Unfortunately they’re all pretty weak defense wise and one good attack will shatter them. They make up for this in sheer numbers and Iron Man has to go through many of them in his big battle against Killian. The climax is definitely pretty fun and it beats the climaxes of most of Marvel’s other big films. There are countless explosions and there are plenty of fights happening at once. Make sure that you keep your eyes peeled so that you see everything that’s happening.

Unfortunately the film ends on a really negative note. Stark makes a really bad move involving the “Clean Slate” protocol and also gets rid of an ally’s superpowers that would have come in handy for the future. The film also has a really underwhelming after credits scene that I didn’t find funny or epic. I would still recommend this film, but it is one that you can wait until DVD to watch. It’s a good addition to the marvel franchise, but nothing awe inspiring.

Man of Steel Review

ManSteelSupermanHeroes2013-Marvel-Legendary

Superman has gotten quite a few films over the years. I have enjoyed all of them (Excluding Superman Returns) but none of them had the explosive fight scenes that today’s films contain. This film was a good opportunity to show that Superman can have a dynamic action sequence. Plus after the big disappointment that was Superman Returns, we needed a real Superman film!

Before we get into the action segments, let’s go over the plot. Right off the bat you know that it won’t be your average Superman origin story. Krypton looks like something out of Star Wars and it’s definitely a good way to start off the film. General Zod and his minions come into play almost immediately and take on the Council. Jor El takes them on while Superman heads to earth. It was a solid beginning and I liked Jor El’s robot assistants. I could have done without Superman being born into the world scene (It definitely dragged on) but it’s a little thing that won’t hurt the experience. After that we get to see Superman as a fisherman and save people from drowning, but it’s only once Kal El dons the legendary costume that the film picks up again. (On a side note, the new Superman costume is definitely pretty cool. I wouldn’t say that it beats the traditional one, but I have no problems with it. It beats the costumes that most superheroes have)

Now, you won’t want to go into this film comparing everyone to how their DCAU counterparts would act. The characters are definitely different and while they aren’t awful…they aren’t that great either. Lois Lane wasn’t quite the brave reporter that she usually is and her (very brief) romance with Superman comes out of left field. Their scene together definitely wasn’t necessary and I could have done without it. Perry White seemed off during the whole film and the rest of the Daily Planet staff never got to do anything important. Jor El was a pretty good character and he was a good fighter. (Although he let his guard down at a critical time) Jonathon Kent was one of the worst characters in the film. Not only does he tell Superman that he should have let a bus full of innocent kids die so that he could hide his super abilities, but also risks his dog’s life for the “greater good”. Almost every line that Pa Kent said made me cringe a little deep inside. This definitely wasn’t the character that I grew up with and unlike Superman, it wasn’t a good new version. While I wouldn’t say that Superman’s new attitude is better than the classic personality, it’s not a negative change. Jonathon Kent is no longer a character that can be looked up too or admired. Superman’s a good character as always and I didn’t mind his new personality. He doesn’t tend to mock his opponents or brag as much as he used too, but he gets the job done.

Let’s check in with the villains. General Zod made for a good opponent, but was a pretty two dimensional character. I wouldn’t call it a negative thing and I’d still take him over (Sorry folks) the Joker and Loki. General Zod talked a big game, but he could back it up and trade blows with one of the strongest superheroes on the planet. His two main minions, Faora and the power hitter of the group (No idea what his name was though) were also pretty interesting characters. Faora stole the show in hand to hand combat and definitely put up an excellent fight against Superman. (Faora taking on Wonder Woman would make for a great fight) Faora got more screen time than the 3rd minion and even rivals General Zod. Zod may have gotten the final fight scene against Superman, but Faora fought Superman as well as terminated many of the army grunts. The 3rd minion didn’t get much of a role, but had a pretty good fight with Superman and I thought that he was a pretty good fighter.

Now, would the villains have been as cool without the epic fight scenes? I highly doubt it! The fight scenes in Man of Steel are definitely top notch and definitely the best fight scenes in any live action film. There is no film that can even compare with Man of Steel’s action scenes. Avengers, Godzilla, even Spiderman, none of them had the speed and power that the Man of Steel’s battle scenes brought to the table. The soundtrack also gave the battle scenes an extra boost as the music complemented the scenes perfectly. They definitely reminded the audience that these fight scenes had high stakes. As for General Zod’s ending…I can definitely see how it would be controversial. I don’t think that it absolutely needed to happen and I’m maybe a bit skeptical that such a thing would be done to Zod, but hey…it happened in the comics (Albeit in a similar way) didn’t it? So, it wasn’t an extremely shocking thing to me.

The one problem about being a great film is that it puts more pressure on the sequel. We’re going to need more than Lex Luthor if the next film is to match up against this one. Doomsday or Darkseid would make for a pretty great villain, but there aren’t many other Superman villains who could help the sequel surpass this one. General Zod and his men were the perfect adversaries for Superman since they could (almost) match him blow for blow. Still, I will hold out hope for the sequel, after all I hadn’t thought that this film had much potential after seeing the first trailer.

Overall, the Man of Steel is a film that you’ll definitely want to check out. It’s easily the greatest film in a looooong time. Definitely top 5 material and excluding a certain Kaiju series…it is the greatest (live action) film of all time. I highly recommend checking out this film while it’s still in theaters. You won’t regret it!

Beast From Haunted Cave Review

51103AZX3EL._SY300_

The Beast From (the) Haunted Cave is an old horror (It doesn’t feel like one) film that involves a group of criminals who plan to rob a town and then escape by tricking the skiing instructor into letting them stay at his cabin. After that they would make a quick getaway in their Helicopter (Or Plane, I forget at the moment, but it was definitely an aerial vehicle!) Once the monster comes in…will their plan succeed!?

Alright, let’s start off with the characters. This film had a pretty awful cast and you’ll finish the film without remembering a single name. Now the film was only a little over an hour so you didn’t get to see that characters for a very long amount of time, but it was definitely enough. If you can’t make a character interesting within the first 30 minutes of his screen time, then he’ll never get cool. Also, the film moves at a really slow pace. The first 30+ minutes is spent developing the romance between the two main characters and having the villains make small talk. The film would have been better if they could have cut out most of the romance, made the characters more likable, and also show the police taking on the monster.

That being said, let’s talk about the monster. He is easily one of the weakest monsters in movie history. This isn’t even an exaggeration folks, he can barely overpower a human. When the main monster can barely beat a human, then what can he do!? He seemed to be a of a spider-human hybrid, but he’s far too slow to be a real threat. Even when he does capture his victims, he doesn’t actually finish them off for a while. One human managed to stay alive for almost 2 days until he finally finished her off. The monster doesn’t have much of a presence in the film because he tends to stick to the shadows, but even when he steps out it’s usually not for the best.

The Beast From (The) Haunted Cave is definitely not a film that I recommend. Even if you are a big monster fan, then I recommend checking out Godzilla, Gamera, or the Beast from 20000 Fathoms. Those movies know how to show off a monster and make him a threat. This monster was no such thing and even though the film is short, you’ll find that it feels like a never ending summer blockbuster.

Super Smash Bros Brawl Review

The Super Smash Bros. series is easily one of the most popular game series of all time. The concept of bringing together Nintendo’s most popular characters from various franchises into one game was definitely a genius move. The first two games became living legends right away so there was a lot of pressure on Brawl to deliver. I’d say that SSBB definitely did a solid job and delivered everything that I could have wanted in the game.

Brawl had a pretty solid array of game modes to play around with. Classic Mode has stayed true to formula and is definitely the most traditional mode for the series. All Star mode lets you challenge all 35 Smash characters in a long marathon of battles. Boss Battles mode is a new choice that debuted in this game. There are 10 bosses to challenge and completing this mode on intense difficulty is truly an impressive feat. There are many other modes including the Homerun Contest, Event Mode, Break the Targets, and Multiman Brawl, all of which have a co-op option as well as the normal single player version. SSBB is definitely rich in content and you will find yourself playing it for hours. If you want a break from brawling, there are now other modes to appease your gaming needs. Coin Launcher is a mode where you use your coins to shoot at trophies and objects that drop stickers. It’s a pretty fun minigame and definitely an improvement from the lottery machine in Melee. With 700 stickers and over 500 trophies, you’ll definitely be using this mode a lot! A unique feature that was added to this game was the stage builder. It is pretty fun for a while, but eventually you find yourself wishing that they had added more objects and background to customize with. Brawl is the first game in the series to add Challenges. Meeting the requirements for each challenge unlocks a trophy, stage, or CD. They’re definitely fun incentives to make sure that you play every facet of the game and none of them are outrageously long or difficult. (The 100 hour of vs mode gameplay may seem daunting, but you’ll likely have played that much by the end anyway)
super-smash-bros-brawl-wii-multiplayer
Let’s get on to Brawl’s story mode: The Subspace Emissary. (Which you can play with a friend using the co-op feature) The other modes which I’ve already mentioned were great and very fun to play, but the Subspace definitely blows them out of the water. Brawl’s story mode is what earned the game it’s place as the 2nd greatest game of all time. The story mode was perfectly done, featuring many of the characters that were playable in the game. The characters all set about to stop the Ancient Minister and the Master Hand from destroying all of the worlds. The game did a good job of making the story into a very compelling and deep one that made you want to keep on playing without stop. Some subplots may have not been too exciting (Like Pokemon Trainer and Lucas’s) but others will keep you on the edge of your seat (Samus and Pikachu) Once the climax begins, the heroes all rally together to stop the ultimate enemy The Master H-Tabuu! Tabuu is a character made exclusively for Brawl’s story mode and I’d say that the game did a great job with him. Having the appearance of a cosmic entity and an aura of mystery, Tabuu quickly showed off his power as he managed to defeat Nintendo’s all stars. Things definitely appeared dire for the heroes, but to learn the ending you’ll need to buy the game for yourself.

The core gameplay of Brawl is pretty similar to Melee’s, but there have definitely been some changes. The gameplay has been slowed down and the characters are actually able to trip now. I’m not sure if I agree with either change, but I am glad that the developers took some initiative to make sure that it wasn’t just a copy of Melee. Brawl contains 10 more characters than Melee with the most notable of them being Sonic The Hedgehog. The characters are decently balanced (but good luck using a power type to take on someone quick like Fox or Captain Falcon) and all of them have their unique abilities. Many of the characters seem to be weaker than their melee incarnations, but it helps to balance out the game. The animation definitely holds up to this day, but I would say that it’s a bit of a step down from Melee.

In the end Super Smash Bros Brawl is definitely a solid addition to the Wii’s lineup and a must buy for any gamer. It is currently my 2nd favorite game of all time and it is unlikely to be passed by anything (Aside from future Smash Bros titles) anytime soon.

Megaman X Command Mission Review

Megaman X Command Mission was a step in a brand new direction for the Megaman series. Instead of the traditional 2D gameplay, this installment used a turn based combat system. This game also marked one of the few times where Sigma was not seen at all. (Even Vile couldn’t make it) Without those heavy hitters the story could have gone south, but did it?

Before I talk about the story, let’s go into the gameplay. As I mentioned earlier, the gameplay is turn based, (Like Pokemon) but there are times when you need to input commands to maximize damage on your super attacks. You can also switch in and out with your characters during the battle depending on what strategy you are planing to use. It is easy to get the hang of the controls, but there is still a lot of strategy involved. One method of getting through the game is to just keep on leveling up over and over again until you can simply overpower the opponents. Another way is to just maximize the items that you possess and determine what the best team strategy could be. Either way the gameplay never gets repetitive and you’ll be content all the way through the game.

Animation wise, Command Mission still holds out pretty well. The character designs were well thought out and everything looks to be in place. The battles that take place during the cutscenes were greatly animated and there’s never any big animation errors or scenes where the animation drastically drops. Command Mission also features a pretty good soundtrack and it’s one of the more memorable ones in the Mega Man franchise.

Now it’s time to talk about the story. Command Mission had an incredible story and it was the highlight of the game. Megaman and co are sent to infiltrate Giga City and stop the maverick leader Epsilon. The heroes realize that this won’t be an easy task when they are ambushed by a group of very powerful mavericks. After the explosive beginning, the game starts to lose a little steam during the Massimo and Cinnamon chapters. Beyond that, the villains keep popping out of nowhere and their are many plot twists that occur. Epsilon definitely stood out as the coolest of the new characters, but Wild Jango and Scarface were also pretty excellent characters. The one flaw that I would have with the story, is that Megaman X and Zero seem to be very under powered. At this point in their career, they’ve already dealt with dozens of mavericks and they should be able to take on most of the newcomers with ease. Zero was actually losing to Mach Jentra, which is something that I find a little hard to believe. The rest of the plot makes up for this flaw and will definitely keep you eager to see what will happen next.

Mega Man X Command Mission is definitely one of the best Mega Man games to date. The gameplay was fun and the story was very exciting. I’d say that Command Mission was a great way to end the Megaman X saga and I would definitely recommend checking this game out.
