Immortals Fenyx Rising Review

This is one of those games that I passed by in the store 100 times. It’s clear that Ubisoft made a whole lot of copies for this one and unfortunately it doesn’t look like it panned out. You can usually get the game for about $5 which isn’t what you want to see for a big budget title. The writing definitely tends to be a big miss but the gameplay itself is really stellar. So this is a game with a lot of ups and downs but ultimately the gameplay is able to keep this one at a high level.

The game starts with Poseidon begging Zeus to free him from his endless torment. Zeus basically laughs at the idea and he’s busy because all of the gods have been taken down by a villain known as Typhos. Zeus is the last one ready to fight but Poseidon tells him the story of a mortal who may be able to tip the scales of battle. Her name is Fenyx and she is on a quest to save all of the gods. Perhaps if Zeus is amused by this story, he will free Poseidon. Maybe…he tends to shift with his moods at random points. Poseidon will have to risk it all here though and Fenyx is his only chance. She will have to harness all of her abilities to win this one.

So when it comes to the writing, this is definitely a game that isn’t taking itself very seriously. There are jokes in every other line and aside from Fenyx, all the other characters are total jerks. By the time the game does transition into being a more serious title, it’s just a little too late. There are definitely some lines that will get a chuckle out of you but also a lot that will have you rolling your eyes. Your best bet to enjoy the story is if you just really like that kind of annoying character. A character who complains nonstop but has absolute power so everyone just has to roll with it.

The game doesn’t shy away from all the darker parts of the old gods either. Zeus and the others are all basically evil with how many crimes they did so it’s hard to root for them. Typhos may be less sinister as he’s just evil in a basic destroy the world kind of way. Zeus and the others are busy torturing people for life so it’s a little hard to be worse than that.

Like I said, the gameplay is why you are really here though. It has a large hub world like Breath of the Wild, but you can glide at high speeds and have a more generous stamina bar. It lets you navigate the world a little smoother than Link. There is also a ton of content here with the main game being around 20 hours long and the bonus content will probably take you another 10 hours or so on top of that. Not a bad deal for your buck right?

The gameplay is intuitive enough where I had a lot of fun exploring and completing side missions. Not purely for the fun of it but because each power up makes a solid difference. The collectibles expand your health bar, potion inventory, stamina, and attack power. Even with all of those power ups, I still lost my initial attempt against the final boss which shows just how powerful he was. The game never gets absurdly difficult but it will give you a fair challenge. It’s not the kind of game you can just beat with your eyes closed.

The combat is all in 3D so picture any 3D action title. You have your sword, an axe, and a bow to shoot arrows with. I used axes for 90% of the game as they hit harder than swords and can also stun enemies. They are a bit slower but that’s fine. You can roll to dodge enemy attacks or parry them. I never tried parrying in this game because dodging felt a whole lot more natural but it’s worth noting that it is an option. So you want to keep it all in mind.

The game has enough customization where you can really have a very different gameplay style than the next player. Do you go aggressive or focus on parrying? The choice is really yours here. Then the puzzles come in a wide range of different options. They can sometimes be a bit too unclear on what you’re supposed to do but for the most part they aren’t bad. This game is probably the first time I’ve seen a puzzle rush as opposed to a boss rush. I was definitely not expecting that.

The graphics are pretty solid here. The artstyle isn’t my favorite but on the whole the game is clear. I only encountered two glitches and both were purely artistic ones so it’s not like losing save data or something. The soundtrack is more on the generic side though. None of the tracks were particularly impressive and you will forget them as soon as you put the game down.

That’s why the game is fully dependent on the gameplay here. There are a bunch of quality of life features here as well like quick saving anywhere, fast travel, and a super detailed map. I would like it if you could refine the map a bit more in terms of limiting what you want to appear but that’s me being a little greedy. This is still more than what most other games have. The clear progression and really fun action gameplay makes for a dynamite combo. I think you could pull off just about any kind of story with this gameplay because I’m just going to be addicted to the combat. This game was a good example of that as it is a very weak story compared to pretty much any game I’ve played in a long time and yet the experience was still a lot of fun. Not fun enough for me to buy the dlc though.

Overall, This is definitely a pretty unique game. I can definitely say that for better or worse I will certainly remember every bit of it for a very long time. The goo and the bad. I wouldn’t be running to grab a sequel but I certainly wouldn’t avoid it either. If you’re looking for a solid action game with a ton of content to play through, then this is a good one to check out. It will really test all of your abilities.

Sonic Rumble Review

I was waiting a long time for this game but it just kept on getting delay after delay. The game even released an official launch date more than once and it would still get pushed back. So that wasn’t ideal and by the time it came out, I’m afraid the game wasn’t worth the wait. It doesn’t even make it to the level where I can say it is a fairly solid mobile game. One of the big problems holding this one back is that the game is fairly slow for a Sonic game.

The main gameplay style here is basically what I would call the “Fall Guys” gameplay. It is unashamedly a complete clone of that game. Just reskin the characters to be Sonic characters and that’s about it. The problem is that the game doesn’t seem to have as much polish as Fall Guys. It looks and plays okay, but just feels very limited. The games range from trying to get a lot of coins to getting to the end of a level like in Fall Guys. The level designs aren’t nearly as inspired though and definitely end up falling flat.

I also suspect that in the first few games they have you playing against bots because it’s like nobody else was fighting back at all. Even when I would play bad and intentionally slow down, I’d still come in first. The whole thing feels a bit suspect to get you feeling good and trick you into spending money. The game drew a lot of controversy for how expensive everything is within the game and so that does make you think a little about it. We’re talking hundreds and hundreds of dollars that you will be spending here.

Now you know that I’m a freemium player either way so it’s not like I’m going to be spending anything here. It is rough though for all the impressionable kids who might be tempted to do so. Microtransactions are rarely a good thing, particularly when they get right in your face like this. The game has full on pop ups that just jump out at you. I’d expect that from a random mobile game, not something officially using Sonic The Hedgehog. So that was a full on miss.

Back to the gameplay, it is fun to be able to use the iconic homing attack to fight off other players. I think with different games this could have ended up being addicting but with the time limit ones that are present, I just don’t see much reason to keep on playing. It’s clear that the devs are planning to add a bunch of characters and such so I give them credit there but it’s not going to be enough to get me to stick around.

It’s pretty rare that I play a mobile game for long anyway so it’s not like that’s a bad sign in itself. I still look forward to playing whatever it is that the next Sonic game decides to do. It sounds like it’s a card based game so that’ll definitely be interesting. A potential winner at the very least. I can also say that the technical elements of this game aren’t bad. I enjoyed the graphics which are really sharp and definitely stand out. The soundtrack is far less intense, maybe later on they can grab more licensed music which would be a lot of fun to see.

There is technically almost unlimited replay value here. There is an energy meter so you can’t play for too long in one day but aside from that there will always be things to do. That is basically true for any multiplayer game after all. As long as you continue to find the game fun, that is really the important thing here.

The way the career score works, it also pays off to be a long time player. You basically get a boost in your score which makes it easier to win matches. It’s not necessarily a huge difference but I do think it’s a bit fishy that this helps you out on the leaderboards without resetting for every season. Most games that do career scores like this make sure to reset the level/boost every season like Madden and Fortnite. Not doing that just seems like it’s going to make things more and more lopsided as the game continues to age. Not a really smart way to go about it unless you can buy something to increase your score. In which case that will look like another case of greed here.

Overall, Sonic Rumble is a little too basic for its own good. It is basically content to be a clone of Fall Guys without actually trying to surpass it or really doing anything very different. It feels like the Sonic characters are basically wasted here as the game could have been done with almost any IP. So this one wasn’t for me but of course if you are a huge fan of Fall Guys, then it goes without saying that you should check this one out. After all the games have some slight Sonic mechanics which are not in Fall Guys so you may get a kick out of that.

Good Morning, Great Old One Review

Usually when Jump comes out with a oneshot, I expect something that’s maybe 40-50 pages. Well, this one is surprisingly shorter than a weekly chapter so that was really odd. Nothing wrong with a quick adventure of course, but at the same time you are left thinking that they could have done more with the concept. It’s not bad or anything but I don’t think this one is really going to leave a big impact on you. It will have ended just as you were getting into it.

The story starts with a girl watching her favorite youtube videos when an alien creature walks over and asks what she is doing. He doesn’t seem to know much about Earth and its customs. The girl isn’t particularly shocked either and just explains that she doesn’t like going to school which stifles her creativity. Instead she watches Youtube on the beach and skips school whenever she can. Her favorite channel has stopped uploading videos due to an alien invasion though so the alien puts a stop to it and asks if she would like to make a Youtube account with him. It looks like these two are going to be having a lot of fun now.

I suppose if the author ever wants to, he can make a whole series out of this. It seems like it would have a buddy cop kind of feel. Maybe it would transition into being an action series later on since the alien is clearly super powerful. There is a lot of potential here in either case but it’s not like this oneshot could really get into much of that. It could also stay as a full on comedy for all that we know.

The art is quite solid. You can tell that the action scenes would look really good if the author wanted to go in that direction. The character designs are memorable although I can’t say that I love the way the alien looks. Definitely going to be a little hard to market that design but there have been weirder characters in the past. The heroine seems to be the type of character who doesn’t let anything phase her so I suppose that will be part of the comedy dynamic here.

There would be more characters later on but yeah it’s hard to really judge it too much off of 12 pages. I think there is potential here so I’ll put the series right in the middle. I just need to see more for me to really call this a good story. It’s just exceptionally short and I can’t overstate that enough. Maybe this really is some kind of back door pilot and it’ll get a full adventure someday. If so, I like to think that I’ll still remember it at that point.

Overall, This oneshot pretty much felt like a trailer to a manga. There’s not a whole lot going on here and you couldn’t really get a glimpse of what the main plot for an ongoing series would be. It could play out in a few different ways depending on what kind of tone the author wanted to use here. I’d say to check it out while the oneshot is still free on Viz. It’ll only take maybe 5 minutes after all. Otherwise if you just want to wait and see on an eventual series I guess you’ll be rolling the dice on this one. There are technically many oneshots which never get an ongoing series after all.

Alice in Wonderland Review

Alice in Wonderland is a film that I know very well and yet I can’t say that I remembered about half of it. When I think of this story, I remember the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts. Otherwise most of the in between was foreign to me. So it was nice to see the whole adventure and I can definitely say that it has aged well. It’s a fun story and Alice works well as the main character who has to deal with all of the craziness.

The story starts with Alice being really bored. Her sister is trying to teach her something but Alice has no time for that. She sees a curious rabbit running somewhere and gives chase. This causes her to fall into a whole new world where the normal theories of physics need not apply. The world is dangerous and has a whole lot going on within it. Alice will have to keep her guard up at all times in order to survive. The toughest part will be keeping her sanity though.

Now in a modern remake of this I would expect a lot of sarcastic banter and a lead who would really fight back. In this classic version, Alice does her best to be polite at all times even when the characters are not being the most pleasant towards her. The whole tea party scene is a good example of this as they keep on taking her tea away before she can drink it. The conversations start spiraling early on and it’s clear that they are all insane.

Alice doesn’t really let it get to her although she was ready to leave in several instances. The whole scene is just really bonkers with how nonsensical everyone is acting and that is part of the charm. The whole film has a bit of a weird vibe to it and I would say that is what ultimately got it to be so well known and popular. You won’t forget any of these characters and it is fun enough where people even tend to ignore the ending. You will have been sucked into the adventure.

It’s also worth noting that the film is quite short as it is barely over an hour. As a result the pacing is really good and the film certainly never drags on. The animation is also really incredible considering how old it is. It’s insane to me that a film from the 50s can look better than some animation in the 2020s. That’s the gem of hand drawn animation though. It ages incredibly well and always tends to beat its competitors in the long run.

The music isn’t some of Disney’s strongest though. I don’t think any of the songs here would hit the big time for me. They’re okay I suppose. I wouldn’t call them bad but at the same time I don’t see myself looking any of them up anytime soon. They’re just not going to be quite at that level.

While the tea party is definitely my favorite sequence, the Queen of Hearts part is certainly a classic. How do you defeat someone when they can legally murder you at any point? It adds a lot of stress to Alice’s game when going head to head in croquet here. The Queen may not be the most reasonable character but she works well as a villain. She is always in control and it’s actually okay for her to panic since she is royalty and can do whatever she wants. It’s not like she will ever be on the back foot as a result.

The Cheshire Cat ended up being one of the most remembered characters from the movie. Despite that I wouldn’t say that he has a whole lot of scenes to himself. Still, when the film is this short I suppose that is enough. He is a fun character as well since his near invincibility means that he really has nothing to fear from anybody. He does whatever he wants whenever he wants and that’s just the way that he rolls.

The Rabbit is probably the weakest character in the end. After all he spends almost all of his screentime running and being all scared. He has good reason for this of course but at the same time it doesn’t make him the most compelling character. While a lot of the other characters had less sanity than the rabbit, they also seemed to have a lot of confidence in their own way. It’s not like they were all spending their lives in fear of the Queen.

Alice in Wonderland is a good template of how to have some good world building with minimal time. It doesn’t take long for all of this to be set up. A good fantasy world doesn’t really need a lot of rules and baggage to appear right away. Instead it should be able to do anything and I’d say the film lies up to that. Things don’t make sense to Alice and the viewer but to the characters it clearly does. It’s just a whole other system of logic and that’s all you really need to know.

Overall, Alice in Wonderland is a pretty fun film. I had a good time with it and at the end of the day it is basically simple fun. All of the obstacles she runs into are thought out pretty well. Alice herself could be a little slow on the uptake as she has a very hard time keeping up with all of the craziness that is happening. I would have thought by the halfway point she would already know that she has to assume everyone is crazy. Ah well she’ll get them next time and maybe her sister can join in on the adventure this time. Either way I definitely recommend checking this movie out and seeing for yourself just how advanced the animation was back in the 1950s!

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie Review

This movie is really chaotic and I mean that in all the best ways possible. Something is always going on here as the cast is quite large and the film does its best to squeeze everyone in. Meanwhile you’ve got a really excellent soundtrack and lots of great fights. All in all you couldn’t ask for much more than this. It will easily go down as the definitive Street Fighter flick, I have massive doubts that any title will ever surpass this one.

The film starts with Ryu taking down Sagat which causes everyone around the world to take notice. Sagat was a top fighter after all and lost to someone who is effectively unknown. The powerful Bison recruits Sagat to his terrorist army and is now on the search for Ryu. Bison intends to force Ryu’s participation in his army and will stop at nothing to pull this off. Guile and Chun-Li are agents who realize this as well and must make contact with Ryu first. Will they be able to find him? Ryu is the ultimate wild card.

This film does a good job of not holding back on account of the general audience. Instead it just plunges ahead and counts on you as the viewer to be able to keep up. I would definitely say that is the right way to approach things because then you can use the advantage of being an established franchise which is to have all of the characters interacting and mixing it up with each other.

Ryu’s presence is felt throughout the film even if he could go for long portions of time without appearing. Everyone is after him of course and the guy is just enjoying himself as he travels across the world. It takes Bison literally showing up in front of him to get the guy to act. Ryu could stand to be a little more aggressive in stopping the forces of evil but the film makes clear that he doesn’t have any real interest in heroics. No, he’s focused on training and getting stronger.

Ultimately it has worked to the extent that he is one of the strongest Street Fighters in the world. On the other hand, he still isn’t a match for someone like Bison who uses psychic powers. Bison absolutely shreds everyone in this film and even by the end the heroes only stand a chance because he decides to turn off his powers and fight them hand to hand. Some nice chivalry by the villain there even if he was really doing it just as a result of his overconfidence. That’s just the way that Bison operates.

Each side character gets a solid moment in the spotlight as well. Chun Li for example gets the highlight fight of the movie against Vega. The film really went intense on this one. It’s not only the most violent fight but also the longest one on one without any interruptions. She definitely proved herself as being more than capable on this mission since most of the other characters in the film would have lost this fight.

I’d say the only exception is Guile who really doesn’t get any pivotal moments here. The film pits him against Bison briefly but he is taken out almost immediately and so he got robbed of the chance to have a proper fight. I would have put him up against Balrog to have given him something to do earlier. At the end of the day even this film was subject to some runtime limitations though so that’s fair. I would say it did more with the runtime than I would have otherwise expected.

The soundtrack is absolutely incredible. There are a ton of great rock songs here and I’ll definitely be looking them u online at some point. I saw the English version and they absolutely nailed it here. Then you’ve got the animation which is also excellent. The characters look like they were pulled straight out of the games and the fight scenes are quick and animated very well. The technical elements definitely do not have any real weaknesses here.

Street Fighter also just has a really fun aesthetic that you don’t see as much anymore. The scanners that show you the fighters’ stats are really cool and likewise as the film jumps around the world, all of the characters are ready for action. There aren’t long downtime moments for drama or characters wondering what to do. When you’re watching the movie, you know that something big is about to go down and I’m all here for it.

The film surprisingly ends with some things still about to happen like Sagat heading out to finish Cammy. I assume maybe that’s meant for a potential sequel or there was going to be a scene and it got cut out. I would have liked to have seen those extra fights but you still get left on a hype note. I should note that I saw the TV version of this film. You’ll want to watch out as otherwise there is a long fanservice scene that gets surprisingly explicit. It’s the one hiccup that the film made on its journey and it was quite the bizarre one since it comes out of nowhere. The film was otherwise completely focused on quality action scenes.

Ultimately Ken lives up to his reputation and overshadows Ryu in this film. I would say it’s clear that Ryu is a little more skilled than Ken and is always treated as such but they are basically neck and neck in that area. At the same time, Ken has a full life here as he is the martial arts world champion and is getting close to marriage. He has managed to achieve his dreams without wandering the world in search of true fights. Ken just ends up being more relatable this way. He also takes quite the beating on several occasions but always gets up to keep on fighting.

Overall, Street Fighter II is a film that I would definitely recommend. It was a really fun journey and even if you aren’t familiar with the series, you’ll be able to enjoy the vibe and the action. It’s the kind of film that has a ton of replay value and I would have a good time even rewatching it right now. Maybe one day we’ll get a Street Fighter III movie that works as a nostalgia sequel to this one. I’d say it would be a good idea and would do great in sales.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment Review

It’s time to finally look at the final Legend of Zelda. This game series has really been going on for a long while and I am definitely going to miss the Hyrule Warriors part of it. The gameplay is absolutely amazing. It feels great to be taking down whole armies of fighters that try to get in your way. The series has really gotten its gameplay down to an art form by this point in the franchise. Trust me when I say that the game is absolutely not going ever be under an 8 from this team unless the company suddenly forgets how to code.

The game starts off with Zelda falling into a portal that transports her into the far past. She must now work with the king of Hyrule to stop Ganondorf in his mad quest for power. It won’t be easy to do this though. If you’ve played Tears of the Kingdom before then you already know how this will play out on a large scale. That said, the individual events are still different and that is what you will want to really keep an eye on.

At first the lack of a main menu will probably feel a bit weird. Everything is just around the hub world and then you find all the missions and levels from there. Eventually you do get a layout that lets you cycle through everything as a true menu replacement though. There are story levels and side quest levels where you get new items or can recruit new characters. Most of the characters to unlock are in the side levels but even if you skip them it won’t change much.

This is easily one of the worst rosters I’ve seen Nintendo churn out. All of the side characters are basically just palette swaps. I would have liked some really fun ones like Toon Link since these are side characters anyway. I went ahead and recruited all of the side characters for fun but it’s not like I ever really took a liking to them. That’s a mild weakness for the game but at the same time you can tell that I had enough fun where I did go out of my way to beat all of these.

There are also hundreds of quests and character missions. I beat over 100 quests which just means transferring over your items for more rewards. It’s quick and fun so I had a good time with that. The character missions are a bit more tedious so I skipped out on some of them. It is fun to see the map slowly turn into blue to show that you are taking over but the game does have that one annoying mechanic where villains will take over areas you’ve already conquered so you have to keep completing old levels. Feels a bit like a grind for no real reason.

It may sound like I have a lot of little issues with this one but that’s because the more I like the game, the more these things are noticeable. The actual gameplay is top tier. Nonstop bashing of enemies left and right. All of the attacks are really good and the various elements really make it fun to be switching up characters. By the end it was hard to say that anyone was more fun than the King of Hyrule. His gameplay was top tier but ??? is right up there with him.

I should say that ??? absolutely carried the heroes. He was super super awesome. I also liked the new villain who shows up in the game. Probably one of the best new Nintendo villains that I’ve seen in a while. He was really impressive. Aside from the 3D beat em up levels, we also had a few flying levels where you have to shoot all of the enemies in your way. That was a really good change of pace and those levels are what reminded me of how much work they put into this game. It’s clear that this wasn’t just some random beat em up. It was absolutely worthy of the Hyrule Warriors name.

The graphics are definitely top tier here. The game looks like a 2025 title and the attack animations are all really good as well. Even when you’re fighting off hundreds of enemies, you’re not going to get lost or anything like that. You’re going to be able to keep on going strong without any issues. The soundtrack isn’t quite as inspired. It’s decent but I can’t think of any tune that I will be going out of my way to check out. It’s not that kind of game unfortunately but the music isn’t bad or anything like that. Ultimately that’s the most important thing.

All in all, the best way to have a lot of fun with this game is to really dabble in everything that the game has to offer. Go ahead and clear the quests that you have the items for. It will only take a matter of seconds and this will give you a ton of permanent upgrades. I’d also say to clear the recruitment quests when they come up because they are short as well and why not have more fighters right? They all showed up in the final levels but I’m not sure if that would have happened either way. Perhaps that made for an easier climax? The game does have a level up system too so you’ll want to be as strong as you can. The levels can actually have some pretty decent jumps in difficulty as you go through the game.

Overall, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment was a terrific game. It is elite in every way and the story is also longer than you may have expected for this genre. It was certainly more cinematic than I would have assumed. The game seeks to surpass your expectations in every area and I would say that it succeeds in this goal. Even if you’re a little burned out on the Breath of the Wild part of the series, this is one game that you don’t want to miss out on. Hopefully we get another Hyrule Warriors someday.

M3gan 2.0 Review

This movie is pretty interesting because it has a downright excellent premise but executes it in one of the weakest ways I could have imagined. The script tends to need a lot of work, the fight is basically just teased for 90% of the movie, and the final climax/ending aren’t as good as they should have been. So in that sense the movie left a lot of meat on the table, but on the other hand…I still had a good time with it. I would say it is still a good movie even if it’s not amazing.

The movie starts off by introducing us to a new robot named Amelia. She is essentially a weaponized version of M3gan who can be sent into active war zones or other places that could be dangerous. At first this looks promising but then she goes rogue and appears to want to end humanity. This forces the government to locate M3gan’s creator, Gemma. M3gan shows up beforehand to warn her that this will happen but the government shows up with threats anyway. Gemma knows she will have to stop this new threat but doesn’t want to rebuild M3gan. Will she be able to stop the new android or will she be forced to turn to her old enemy?

Naturally I like a good hero/villain teamup. It tends to make for an exciting plot and that’s the benefit of being a sequel. Long time horror fans may be dismayed to learn that the horror is mostly gone though. The intro scenes with Amelia temporarily bring back the horror with a few jump scares and vicious murders but after that this becomes a full on action movie. Fortunately I love action movies so that worked for me. This has that classic summer blockbuster feel to it.

Lets get into the negatives right away though. You are looking forward to M3gan fighting Amelia. That is pretty much the core point of this film’s plot. Despite that, they don’t really fight until the very end of the film. The first time they meet, M3gan is in the wrong body. After that, Amelia is in the wrong body and they are interrupted before they can fight. Finally we get a battle near the end but M3gan was already super weakened so it still wasn’t an even fight. They made a massive mistake here if you ask me.

We should have gotten a big fight in act 1, then the rematch down the line. It felt like that was the obvious play right? I would also say another weakness is that the writing is generally pretty weak. Lots of lines that will just make you wince or even worse, cringe. They try to write M3gan as being very direct and without shame so she tends to get more of these lines. It’s a tough balance because she also has the best lines but some of them are just being crude for no real reason. I’m hoping they can strike a better balance in the next film.

Finally one more negative would probably be the long singing sequence we get from M3gan. It’s clear this was meant as a funny joke but it’s another example of the film’s poor execution since it drags on for too long. I think it would have been funny if it was just at half the length that it was. Unfortunately that didn’t happen.

On the character side, Gemma is okay I suppose. She seems a bit passive the whole time and it feels like she isn’t properly recognizing the incoming threat here. Amelia is certainly dangerous and a bunch of government fighters even broke into her house. Deciding not to rebuild M3gan is one thing, but she should be telling Cady what is going on and getting a plan together with all of them. That would at least allow them to prep. Otherwise it feels like she is setting them up for a loss here.

At least she does get some action later on. Those fight scenes were fun and hopefully if we were to get more films, she would remain as one of the fighters. We could get a nice tag team with her and M3gan eventually. If you like Gemma’s sidekicks though, they don’t do a whole lot here. A few scenes sprinkled in but yeah I wouldn’t expect much out of them. This is not the humans’ show. In general most of the humans just look bad. We get the rich entrepreneur character who is easily seduced by Amelia.

In general the romance in the film is pretty weak. The classic villain getting seduced trick never ends up being convincing. Then we have Gemma going out with Christian but apparently, he’s not even really her type? M3gan gets some incriminating details on her searches and yeah that’s rough. Sounds an awful lot like settling and that’s a recipe for disaster. It’s not a big part of the film so I’m hardly going to dwell on it, but yeah that was a rough look for the heroine.

As for M3gan, she definitely dominates throughout her screentime. She is the most prepared out of all the characters by fault and also has way more charisma than the others. That really goes a long way here. Additionally, she can fight so at least the heroes have someone who is ready. I also thought Amelia made for a good villain. We didn’t need any grand speeches or motivations besides ending humanity. Amelia just does what she wants and that works well for an evil A.I.

The special effects are pretty good and the soundtrack was generally solid. The movie has good pacing and really flies by. I also enjoyed the tone as this movie is really just trying to give you a fun time throughout. I can always respect that. That’s why I’d ultimately say this was a good title. It just feels like a wasted opportunity since it could have easily been great.

Overall, M3gan 2.0 is what happens when you land an amazing premise but forget that you still have to execute it with care. That said, I still recommend it. You don’t get horror films that turn action like this too often. I imagine it feels like Terminator 2’s initial premise when that film was coming out. It’s a lot of fun and I would definitely check out a third film. As a franchise M3gan may not have lasted very long but I definitely will remember the character so in a way you could say that she did become a true horror icon.

Brain Dead Review

This review is of the TV-14 edited version of the film. All thoughts below should be addressed as such as a review of the unedited version would be more negative

Okay this is a weird film right off the bat. There are lot of dream sequences here and the whole time you have to wonder what is real and what isn’t. I definitely haven’t seen many films like this so it will forever be a memorable experience. Of course that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’ll be a good one. Some of the dreams lean a little too hard into the lead’s worries about what his wife is doing when he’s not around and I wanted to see more of him really going crazy. It’s worth the watch as you try to figure out what is going on but I dare say there isn’t a ton of replay value here.

The movie begins with introducing us to Rex who is a top neurosurgeon. He’s one of the best in the business but unfortunately it isn’t a very profitable one and money has been tight. It’s at this point that he is approached by Jim, an old “pal” of sorts. This guy has been doing really well for himself and he has an offer. See, there’s this guy named John who came up with something absolutely brilliant but then went crazy and ran off. They found him but John has total amnesia of what he even invented. So the company wants Rex to go into his mind and fix it. The operation has a large chance of just leaving John braindead though which Rex feel is completely unethical.

Of course, money does talk though and so Rex decides to go through with this after facing more pressure and a homeless guy showing up to wreck one of the last available brains. The operation seems to work…except now Rex’s life is being turned upside down. One day he wakes up as John, the next scene he’s in a plane that is about to crash, etc. It’s like Rex is trapped in a series of unending nightmares with absolutely no way to escape. He needs to find some way to grab onto reality….but can he do it?

How much you enjoy the film will really come down to how much you enjoy the dreams. After a point it becomes clear that most of this isn’t actually happening and so I could picture some people totally checking out. That’s definitely valid, although for me I kind of enjoyed it because I just liked how crazy it got. The situations would be absolutely wild and I also was glad that Rex didn’t let them get to him for quite a while.

He kept on insisting that he was Rex no matter what anyone else was saying. Even with the evidence against him, he wasn’t going to declare defeat. That is the right way to handle such a crazy circumstance. You have to fight for yourself even when nobody else will. No matter how many times the doctor kept trying to say that Rex was just a patient, Rex wouldn’t buy it. I thought that was pretty commendable.

Of course like I said in the intro, he does let himself get a bit too worried about Jim the whole time. Now, sine he is trapped in these dreams I guess to a certain extent he has it extra tough since he doesn’t really know what is real and what is fake but it keeps turning out that his wife is going with Jim or just being super oblivious and not realizing that he is pulling the moves on her. In either case, Rex needed to handle things better instead of getting super drunk and ruining the meeting with a big investor. Those were times when Rex didn’t do so good.

Othe times he tends to be very proactive like when he was in the ocean and had to swim fast or when the crazy guy hid in his closet and Rex had to act normal for the nurse. I should mention that while the film isn’t overly violent, there are a few jump scares/shock value moments. You will see the brain for example and some people have pretty serious injuries. So definitely keep that in mind, this film is certainly not holding back in that respect.

Corporate worked well as the big villains here. I liked how they were in total control the whole time and were constantly waiting for Rex to make a mistake. They can’t lose either way. Either John goes braindead in which case the secret is taken to the grave, or they get his memory back and coerce it out of him. Corporate is always looking at the big picture here and they are certainly ruthless. In the dreamworld it even seems like they might disappear Jim if he fails them. So yeah the stakes are definitely high there. The film also established pretty well that this is a dangerous area too like with the random homeless guy and speeding cars everywhere. Adds a bit to the chaos and that’s when the film is at its best. Just hitting you with endless chaotic moments with no time to breath. The film should really never slow down to try and talk to you, just keep going full speed ahead.

I would have liked the wife to have had more of a role there. Have her poking around and finding clues about what corporate is doing or something like that. with how the film is set up that may have been a little difficult though. Maybe she could be in the dreams aside from the illusion version of her? Would have been a nice way to have given Rex a bit more of a fighting chance at least although he would be in for a tough time either way.

Overall, Brain Dead is a very interesting film. I give it kudos for the unique approach and it is the kind of film that will keep you guessing. At the same time, I do think they really could have done a bit more with it. Either double down on the dreams and make them even more chaotic without a definitive ending to tell you what actually happened or maybe throw in an objective. Like having Rex find out that he has to survive for 3 hours in the dream to return or something. It would essentially be a different movie though. The ending isn’t the most satisfying so that could have made a difference but if you’re looking for a really weird film to check out, this is definitely right up your alley.

It! Review

It’s not time for that clown horror film, instead it’s time to look at a lesser known one involving a golem. It was a little better than I was expecting to be honest. The characters aren’t the best but I would say that in a way the film had a subtle sense of humor about it. It may have been unintentional but it still worked and the film ends up being one that you won’t be forgetting about anytime soon.

The movie introduces us to a disturbed man named Arthur. There’s always been something really off about him and the film doesn’t need to go into detail on this to assure you that he is someone to stay away from. He looks forward to getting a big promotion as the curator eventually but the process is taking a while. One day there is a huge fire where everything in a nearby storage area burns down except for a single golem. Arthur’s boss asks him for something to read it better with but Arthur is slow to move and the golem ends up crushing the guy.

Now Arthur can get his promotion right? Well, instead the board goes with someone else which is definitely upsetting. Arthur decides to actively use the golem as a weapon of destruction in order to clear out the competitors as well as impress his crush Ellen. Ellen seems to feel bad for Arthur and humors him to an extent but she actually likes the fancy guy from New York named Jim. Jim will definitely need to watch out now, but what can he do against a golem?

There are some parts of the film that don’t fully seem to make sense but I suppose you can fill in the blanks. For example the Golem initially seems to do whatever it wants like when it murders the curator by crushing him but then after Arthur actually activates it, the golem begins to work for him. So in the initial scenes, was the Golem working on past programming or something? Additionally, Arthur picked up the trick to controlling it rather quickly when you’d expect that he would have just been another victim.

The film tries to show that perhaps insulting the golem is what makes it made but it’s not like the original curator did that. So it’s going to be a little hard to really understand the golem’s motives. I suppose they aren’t that important. It has a fairly decent design and is definitely very powerful as shown in the bridge incident. He makes for a decent villain but of course is very slow so any fighter who is paying attention should be able to dodge the attacks.

Then we have Arthur who really looks bad here. Aside from being crazy and all, he is desperately going after a lady who is clearly not interested in him. She makes it rather obvious and while I think she could have been sterner, he’s got to take a hint. Arthur is just so desperate and controlling a golem could have easily made him rich and successful if he used it the right away. Then perhaps she would have been more interested in him.

No, instead he just thinks destroying a bridge will impress her for some reason. Ellen is rather naive though like when she gets a call from Arthur late at night saying how he desperately needs to see her. Ellen seriously considers going even if Jim was encouraging this before the twist that he would go in her place. That should have been a notion that would be impossible to her. It’s an extremely bad idea to meet anyone alone at night, particularly someone who has a big one sided crush on you.

Jim is a fun character though, albeit he could be a little overconfident at times. Meeting up with Arthur when he started to have suspicions of wrongdoing was very risky. In fact, there were several times where Arthur came close to destroying Jim. The whole thing could have gone sideways for him in an instant. I do like confidence though and that does help keep Jim higher than he would be otherwise.

There is definitely a body count in this film although the kills aren’t as violet as in other horror titles. There is a level of violence to be sure but you can tell the film is more interested in the overall premise than being a splattershow. So I appreciated the restraint there. As a result the film can actually be a good bit of fun at times. While crazy, it is fun to see Arthur dropping veiled threats and outmaneuvering everybody even when he’s rather sloppy.

The whole hiding the key in the bookshelf idea for example was so risky since someone could have checked there before and realized that the key had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. He also takes super unnecessary risks in stealing artifacts from the museum before returning them. This guy is definitely not a mastermind and without the golem he would have been taken down a lot sooner. The climax is also a whole lot more explosive than I would have guessed.

Overall, It! was a little better than I expected. I do think part of the charm is in a cheesy/camp kind of way though. The film takes itself moderately serious but as long as you can have fun with it then you’ll be okay. If you are looking for a really scary film then this will not be the one for you though. Also if you’re hoping for a real romance, the movie doesn’t have much time for that either. No, it’s more about the reverse romance of figuring out if the golem is actually alive and who is controlling it. As the viewer you have all the answers and are waiting for the others to figure it out. The execution was key and ultimately it was good enough here. I have a feeling that the clown movies would not be able to compete.

The Ghost of Yotsuya Review

It’s time to look at a well known foreign horror film and unfortunately this one was pretty bad. I was expecting some decent entertainment and all but in the end it takes way too long for the ghost to show up. It turns out to be more of a messed up drama for most of the film and the villains stay really annoying throughout. It’s always one of the risks you run when you have a film built around a bunch of villains. You’re waiting for justice but in a film like this it will be a long time coming.

The movie starts with a guy named Iemon wanting to marry Oiwa. He had a bit of a deal with her father but the guy changed his mind and it’s easy to see why. Iemon doesn’t seem like the most put together fellow around. He has let himself go and is patrolling the streets like a homeless person. Well, ultimately he decides to murder her father and his guards. Then he makes his move on Oiwa who essentially decides to get with him as long as he avenges her father’s death. Iemon wants to keep the charade up forever but one guy, Naosuke happens to have witnessed the murder and begins his blackmail. He basically wants Oiwa’s sister as his compensation and keeps on blackmailing Iemon. The two of them continue to sink deeper into this conspiracy.

Now this is really just a problem with the old Japan type films but the honor system goes way too far the whole time. The fact that both girls are willing to marry guys they don’t love just for the vengeance angle is too much. Oiwa at least doesn’t mind Iemon all that much but the sister didn’t like Naosuke at all and still goes through with this. All of their scenes are absolutely brutal. You’re just waiting for the ghost to show up already.

Unfortunately, the ghost angle isn’t a factor until the film is nearly over. So first you have to see Iemon humiliating Oiwa over and over again as he proves to be a terrible husband and even prepares to marry another girl on the side. His love for Oiwa wasn’t even true which just makes Iemon even worse of a character. Obviously he was a villain/murderer from the start but at least if he really loved Oiwa there would be some sense of humanity left. Instead, he is just a shallow guy who gets bored quickly and then continues to inflate his body count.

He can’t stop himself from murdering more and more people and that does not help his final goals. It just gets him deeper into trouble. Not that you feel bad for him but he takes up an enormous amount of screentime. What really hurts the film is that there are no likable characters. The two girls look naive and too trusting for most of this. They are also far too passive as they just wait for the guys to take revenge for them while they stay home. It’s pretty clear that the guys are getting nowhere fast.

As for the ghost, well she is fun to have around once she finally does make a move but even then it takes her a long time to actually take down Iemon. Also, right before becoming a ghost she did end up finishing off a baby so it’s not like they were shaping her up to be a hero either. The whole film is extremely drawn out even though it technically isn’t even a very long film. Mix that in with all of the characters being pretty bad and this was a recipe for disaster.

I’m not a fan of the old time aesthetic and this certainly wouldn’t change my mind on that. You will be left shaking your head the whole time and I wouldn’t even be able to blame you. The whole honor system just doesn’t work and I want the characters to be louder and more pro active. A guy like Iemon should never have gotten as far as he did. Even at the very end of the film he puts up way more of a fight than he should have. Is this guy secretly an absolute swords master or something?

He got too much hype and too much screentime. I’m rarely going to be able to really tolerate a film centered around a super unlikable villain without either seriously amazing supporting characters or a great hero to root for that takes him out in the end. A film like this one is just too depressing and dreary the whole time. It doesn’t leave you with any hope for the characters and is just not a fun one to watch. At the end of the day it forgets about the film’s main objective which is to be a fun and enjoyable film. There is nothing like that here.

Overall, A film like Ghost of Yotsuya was really doomed to fail from the start. The core plot is already not that engaging and you would need either a good amount of humor or something light hearted to balance it out. This film is taking itself deadly serious and so that means it is necessarily going to be a rather tough watch. You need to either have a really happy ending at the ready to balance the tough journey or for the villain to start getting his just desserts at a much earlier time. If you aren’t able to do either of those things, then the film is always going to be in a rather rough spot. There isn’t really any way around that. If you want to watch an authentic horror title, check out Godzilla instead.
