Transformers More Than Meets The Eye Volume 3 Review

transformers-comics-more-than-meets-the-eye-volume-3-cover_1358741632
The Transformers saga continues in this volume! The last one may not have been as impressive as I had been expecting, but this one is back up to par. Ironically, the plot is slightly less interesting because most of it is a story, but you can’t win every battle I suppose.

This collection brings an annual and then we have three regular comics, which split into the current time and a story that the Autobots are talking about. The annual shows the Autbots as they look for an old colony of tough fighters who helped to make Drift into the person that he is today. Unfortunately, they are gone and a galactic peace keeping association want to take the Transformers down once and for all. They won’t be able to debate their way out of this one, but can Ultra Magnus bring himself to take down these law abiding aliens?

Also, there seems to possibly be a traitor afoot as Rodimus finds an Autobot in a vat of oil. This couldn’t have been an accident and it smells like a Decepticon attack. Rodimus is going to need to get to the bottom of this right away. Meanwhile, there is an Autobot who is basically in a coma so the others decide to tell him a story since it might cause his brain functions to start up again. They speak of a tale from millions of years ago that could actually be true. Optimus Prime is in it along with Prowl. It was good to see some of the old faces again.

Optimus Prime is pretty much as epic as usual. He’s in his Orion Pax form, but in this contiunity that really doesn’t affect his character. He’s still the Optimus Prime that we’ve come to know and root for. Pax definitely does a lot of damage to the villains and his ethics are still in place. He may put a little too much trust into his pal, but it happens to the best of them. Prime may only appear in the story, but that will have to do until he returns for real.

Drift is pretty cool as per usual, although he seemed to be a little out of character in the comic. Knocking away the other Autobots when they began to insult him was going a little too far. It’s possible that he is finally losing it or maybe it was just a one time thing. Aside from that moment, Drift is still someone that you can root for and it’s nice to see his swordsmanship in action.

I was more than a little iffy of Rodimus Prime’s role in this comic. At first, he definitely lost his way and I was pretty worried. Was the hero that I had once known starting to forget his morals? Luckily, the selfless decision of another Autobot causes him to rethink his decision and make the correct choice. I’m glad about that and hopefully this will help Rosimus for future issues. After all, he used to be my favorite Autobot for a while. I’m hoping that he can continue to look good and keep hold of his heroism amidst a world of dark deceptions.

Ultra Magnus gets a decently big role in the first comic. Initially, the heroes force him to grin so that they can wipe out some really small villains, but things get a little more serious when the Galactic Peace Federation guys arrive. Ultra Magnus is the only one who really understands the law and he does well in his counters. The villains try to recruit him, but Magnus is an Autobot through and through. He’s definitely a pretty likable guy.

Chromedome is a main character in this collection since he’s the guy who is teaming up with Prowl in the story. He’s surprisingly smart and he does well during the investigation. I was expecting more of a Sherlock and Watson situation. He was decent in Headmasters and I’d say the same for this comic. There’s no real reason to dislike him, but there’s nothing about Chromedome that makes him stand out. He’s an average fighter and he’s basically an average Autobot.

Prowl was pretty cool in the comic. His design is a little too similar to Drift’s, but his personality helps to separate them. He’s very smart, but he doesn’t seem to understand how corrupt the government is. He goes off on his own and it would seem that he never showed up again. A pretty abrupt end to a fun character. He may not have been the best fighter, but he was a good guy to have around in a mystery.

Of course, the main problem that I have with this volume is the fact that it’s basically filler. The annual wasn’t really relevant and the story about the good ole days was decent, but nothing really came of it. I do applaud the final twist at the end due to how shocking and intense it is. It’s a twist that is ultimately fillerish, but having some extra back story can be a good thing I suppose. I’m expecting the plot to unfold a little more in the next volume. We really need some story progression because not much has really happened since the first volume if you think about it.

The artwork is still very good and it’s what I have come to expect from the series. We don’t have a lot of fight scenes in this volume, but the art even helps the brief skirmishes that we get. Optimus Prime’s ground slam on one of the villains was pretty epic. Narration is also benefited by the art because it makes reading the text bubbles a lot easier since the drawings in the background are so crisp. Hopefully the art will stay this good for future volumes.

Overall, this was a pretty good Transformers comic. The stakes were definitely a lot lower than usual and the plot didn’t really move, but maybe it was good for a change of pace. This collection was definitely a lot lighter than the last one and it made for a fun read. It’s not quite as interesting, but it’s interesting enough to keep you entertained. Thanks in part to the art and the characters who are participating in the action. I would recommend reading the first two volumes before this one even if most of the issues are a story of the past. It’s just more enjoyable if you know who the story tellers are and why they’re even here. Whirl gets to appear, but it’s a very small role which is why he didn’t get his own paragraph earlier. I definitely recommend this to all comic readers!

Tycho (UESC) vs Viki

Tycho_Logo
Char_25547
Both of these artificial intelligences are pretty smart and they have a lot of influence in technology. That being said, Viki’s a super computer that has a lot of memory on her side. Tycho (UESC) is also impressive, but he doesn’t seem like he would last against her. Viki’s dominant personality would essentially vanquish Tycho’s as she would take over his systems. In a battle of A.I. there can only be one winner! Viki wins.

Hange vs Link

Soul%20Calibur%202-Link
Link is the Hero of Time and it was great to see how he would fare in anime world thanks to the new Super Smash Bros trailer. Hange may have her swords, but she is no expert and Link would win in a matter of seconds. Her gear that allows Hange to go from building to building won’t faze Link and his Light Arrows. Link wins.

Mothman vs Thor

The Mothman makes his debut on the blog and it’s safe to say that he’s doomed against Thor. The Mothman has slightly heightened physical power and demonic possession seems to be something that he’s capable of, but those abilities won’t even faze Thor. Possessing Thor is completely out of the question and Thor’s raw power level is much greater than the Mothman’s. This creature is starting off with a loss. Thor wins.

Hange vs Slur

Slur
Hange is back and she’s ready for another loss. Slur is much faster than her and a single slash would end the round. It has definitely been a long time since Slur has fought on the blog and this win will help her rise up the blog ranks. Hange just didn’t have a chance of stopping her at this point. Slur wins.

Billy Cranston vs Raphael

MMPR_Blue_Ranger

Billy Cranston is one of the big Power Rangers and his hand to hand skills are matched only by his Blade Blaster. I really don’t believe that Raphael would be able to dodge such an impressive weapon for long and it will ultimately lead to his defeat. Raphael may not be winning this round, but the important thing is that he’s giving it his all. Billy Cranston wins.

Green Lantern Rise of The Manhunters Review

green_lantern_ps3
This was one of the highest games on my list. I’ve wanted it for ages since it had such easy trophies and it was a superhero tie in. They may not be known to be all stars, but they’ve always been fun for me and the gameplay is guaranteed to be good. It’s a tried and true formula that is very hard to wreck. 3D fighting can be spectacular or it can be good. Very rarely is it ever bad. The game was essentially as good as I expected!

The plot is pretty basic so that the emphasis can be on the action. Hal Jordan is still learning the ropes on how to be a good Green Lantern when the Manhunters attack. Hal realizes that their plan is a little deeper than a simple attack and he is going to have to find out what their ultimate goal is before they destroy OA. Not to mention that there may be someone leaking information to these villains. It’s going to take everything that Hal has and more…but he’s up for the challenge.

The gameplay is what you would expect from a superhero game. It’s essentially a duplicate of the Thor game that came out for the PS3 a while back. The way that they fly to the next area and land is about the same as well so it almost feels like they had the same developers or reused part of the game. (Like how Daniel X and Ultimate Spiderman feel identical for the DS) This is not a bad thing since I know what to expect. You can unlock a lot of different constructs to use in the game. Luckily, most of them are pretty useful so you can keep on switching weapons or just find one that you like and stick to it. The Mech suit and the Gatling Gun are definitely two of the most fun weapons to use.

The graphics are pretty average for Green Lantern. It’s decently low for a PS3 game, but it’s good enough. I’m not expecting Final Fantasy for this game anyway. As long as the graphics aren’t downright terrible like Chaotic…then I’m all set. They really tried to match the character designs to the movie counterparts. I’m pretty cool with that and it is helpful for those who just finished the film. There is a brief fight scene at the end of the game, which was a welcome surprise since we don’t get a whole lot of those in cinematic anymore. I shall skip the soundtrack section because there essentially isn’t one in this game.

The trophies for Green Lantern are a cake walk. It’s definitely one of the easiest platinums that I have (almost) obtained. I should officially have it by the end of the day since I just need to finish two more levels. There are no outrageous trophies that will require a lot of grinding unless you start the game on hard mode. Then you’ll have to replay a lot of levels, but it’s short compared to the kind of grind that you see in Bleach or White Knight Chronicles. One of the great things about having trophies is that it gives Green Lantern some much needed replay value.

After all, Green Lantern barely keeps itself from being too short because it has exactly 10 levels. The ground levels can take a while, but the flying ones are completed very quickly. One of the trophies requires that you buy all of the items and that will likely take a little over 20 levels. So, that means that you’ll basically be playing the game twice and then retrying an extra pair of levels. I am so glad that Green Lantern has a level select since it’s much more efficient to just replay the level that way.

While the gameplay is pretty fun since it’s a classic 3D beat em up; I did have some complaints with it. For one thing, defeating the enemies was a little too time consuming after a while. This is especially noticeable during the second play through as you just want to blast through it, but you have to beat the enemies first. You also can’t turn the camera around, which was an interesting twist. I can’t say that I was very fond of this.

While all of the characters were essentially in character, Hal Jordan could be a ltitle irritating at times. In an attempt to make him hardcore, Hal Jordan constantly says “What the —-” and “How the —-” over and over and over again. It really feels artificial because he is completely overreacting. There’s one cutscene where that is essentially all that he says. When he charges up it is interesting because Hal only says “In Brightest Day…In Blackest Night” before yelling to beware his power. The only problem is that his voice dies down every time when he says the blackest night part so it feels like they tacked in the last part at the end. Hal also suspects that there is a traitor, but he acts as if it’s his idea right after Kilowog voiced these concerns. It isn’t to steal his credit either; it just seems as if Hal forgot that he said that. Anyway, it’s not a terribly large complaint and it shouldn’t affect your gaming enjoyment all that much.

Overall, Green Lantern is a fun game. That’s really the bottom line. It’s not going to be remembered as an all star, but I also won’t remember it as a boring game that I couldn’t wait to finish. The gameplay was solid and the story was interesting enough to keep me occupied. The only reason why one would want to be hesitant of the game is the fact that it only has 10 levels, but that’s not a bad number. It’s the minimum amount of levels that I would consider acceptable…but it is still acceptable. Finding a few scattered collectibles and obtaining the trophies fixes this as well. I definitely recommend this to all gamers who are looking for a nice action game.

Red Eye Review

red_eye_ver2
An airplane is a pretty good setting for a film. Flightplan definitely did pretty well in that regard although there will always be a lot of suspense for disbelief. Red Eye also takes place on a plane, but the circumstances are entirely different. Red Eye is definitely not as good as Flightplan, but it was an all right film. I definitely had some issues with it, but other parts were played out well.

Lisa has a pretty tough job over at one of the biggest hotels around, but it’s always good to take a little break. Now, she is ready to go back there and she’s going to take a late flight that gets even later after a plane delay. A guy by the name of Jackson starts to get friendly with her. After a lot of awkward moments, Lisa manages to get in the plane…only to find that Jackson is sitting next to her. He tells her that she must place a call that will destroy a prominent political figure (By switching his room to one with a window) who is staying at her hotel or he will have someone destroy her Dad. Those aren’t acceptable terms for Lisa and now she’s going to need to find a way out of this!

Unfortunately, that will be tough because there don’t seem to be any reasonably smart people aboard the plane. This is where the suspense for disbelief comes in. The main villain headbuts Lisa out of nowhere and someone should have seen and heard the attack. I don’t see how Lisa was knocked out so quickly that she was not even able to gasp. Jackson manages to steal a book from an old lady without her noticing and then he attacks Lisa inside of the restroom. Again, I have to wonder how nobody put two and two together. The little girl could have done a better job of explaining what was happening to the Stewards as well.

Lisa is the main heroine of this tale. I can’t say that she’s one of the more likable protagonists as she made things way too easy for Jackson from the beginning. Bonding with him at the bar happened way too quickly. Then Jackson told her about the big plot twist and she really didn’t take it very well. She should have quickly caused chaos and made the plane land. The guy still needs to make the call to get the Dad and she’d have an opening at some point. Instead she starts crying. I have to admit that this is one of the times where a male protagonist may have been a little better. If this had been someone like Indiana Jones, the main character of the Bourne films…or even guys like Captain Kirk and James Bond; they likely would have just gone on the offensive or bide their time until an attack could be made. Now, is the crying realistic for her? Maybe, but I’m not actually so sure. At that point, it was just a threat and the situation wasn’t completely dire yet. There is a chance that things could get worse and then crying would be acceptable, but it happened a little too quickly. Her final scene is also supposed to be cool and hardcore, but it really just falls flat.

Jackson Rippner is the main villain and naturally he isn’t likable. He’s about as generic as they come and we get no reason to sympathize with him or root for him. He’s just an obstacle that is in the hero’s way. I didn’t even like him before Jackson became the main villain. He was way too pushy and definitely not the kind of guy that you could root for. After changing into a villain, it didn’t really help his case. In the end, he was just bland.

Joe looks pretty bad for most of the film, but it’s arguably not his fault. The average joe wouldn’t suspect much from a car just being outside for a while. Must be a coincidence after all. It was annoying to see him get taken down so quickly, but he essentially makes up for all of this by the end. He seems like a nice guy, but his role is ultimately pretty small. It’s good that he always has a gun at the ready though.

Cynthia is one of the helpers over at the hotel and she had a pretty stressful day. The hotel personnel weren’t very nice to her and then the villain situation popped up. She did the best that she could so I don’t have a problem with her. Keefe seems like a decent politician and he takes the whole thing in stride. His role is even smaller than Cynthia’s but he was one of the better characters. That being said, his security guards were even better. Now those guys were trained professionals! They quickly went and scanned the room for any possible dangers and they were skeptical of the room change. They should have moved the (suspicious) boat that was outside, but they’re only fishing right? After the climax, the guards definitely move fast so at least they are always prepared. I always get a kick out of seeing the government no matter which group it is.

Now, there are a few more times where I had to suspend my disbelief. At one point, the main character has a gun, but she lets the villain walk up to her and knock it away. That….that’s just not right. If you’ve got a gun, then you need to do everything humanly possible to keep it in such a dangerous situation. That was definitely a bit much. The other part is when the cops are alerted that Lisa is on the run. Then they also allow the villain to run right by them. At least arrest one of these guys. The police just didn’t seem to be very smart.

Ultimately, what held the film down was the fact that it just wasn’t very fun to watch. It didn’t suffer from ultra violence, fan service, (One unnecessary scene, but it could have been much worse) animal violence, etc. This is a negative that doesn’t pop up as often, but it’s always crucial. There were no moments in the film where you would feel like cheering except for MAYBE the final gunshot. The rest of the film may be a bit suspenseful for some or just irritating for others. I was more on the latter since I just wanted the hero to do something. Instead, she was basically Jackson’s pawn the entire time. There was also a completely unnecessary backstory for Lisa that we find out about in the climax. The pen scene can be a little disturbingly brutal, but the scene isn’t there for long and I was expecting something gritty like that to play out at some point. It’s typically something that comes along with characters who aren’t professional fighters. They usually have to resort to pens or another sharp object and aim for a weak point. It definitely could have been worse, but it was a lose-lose situation. Well, Lisa had to do something to escape, but I wouldn’t have minded a book slam instead.

Overall, I can’t say that this was my favorite plane movie. It just wasn’t that fun and there is really no replay value for this kind of film. The main character and the main villain were not so great, but the supporting cast was good, which helps to make up for that. There isn’t really a soundtrack in the film and many characters are introduced as if they will have a role, but they end up being inconsequential. I would recommend this film if you’ve wanted to see a film with blackmail to see how the hero gets out of it, but for a much better plane thriller I would go with Flightplan.

Overall 5/10

Spyro vs Johnny Test

Spyro_the_Dragon_(character)
Johnny-johnny-test-26120115-420-302
Johnny Test is back and he’s up against everyone’s favorite purple dragon. Spyro may have started out as a lower tier fighter, but he’s gotten stronger as the games progressed. With powers over the elements and a good amount of speed during flight; it will be tough for Johnny Test to stop Spyro. Johnny Test is tough in his own right and this match would be close, but I believe that Spyro has the edge. Spyro wins.
