Super Bomberman R 2 Review


It’s been quite a long while since I played the first Bomberman R. I can’t say this one was too high on my list but I ended up with a gift card to Best Buy thanks to the McDonalds monopoly event. So at that point this game was basically free and so that meant it was really time to have a little fun with this. The gam decided to add quite a bit of gimmicks and minigames to the usual Bomberman formula. I wouldn’t say they landed too well. It’s a decent game but this prevents it from being pretty good. The only thing that will help the game to stand on its own would be to get a lot of value out of the multiplayer mode.

The story starts with the Bomberman brothers being called into action once more as a dark force is taking over multiple planets. It quickly threatens to destroy life as we know it. Fortunately there are nice life forms made out of energy that want to help and can power up multiple objects and landmarks to help out the heroes. With these creatures, victory should be close at hand. But is there something that the main characters have not yet accounted for?

The story gets surprisingly dark by the end. For 90% of the story it’s all sunshine and comic relief as everyone is messing around but the dark truth behind the situation is what really ends up hitting hard. I would say that the heroes even make the wrong call here. They continue to go down a path that will lead to more deaths in order to save a bunch of people in the end. Sure, it makes sense if you’re purely looking at this in terms of the greatest good achieved, but sacrificing everyone along the way just feels like a really rough thing to do. I feel like most protagonists would end up trying to save the day on their own in order to spare everyone else.

As with the last game, Bomberman’s brothers are all on the very annoying side though. They really feel like they are just here to hold him back in a big way. Without them, Bomberman would be taking center stage and fighting without distraction. The game tries a bit too hard to make them all very quirky and likable. They end up being quirky but purely in an annoying way.

Now for the gameplay, it’s pretty standard Bomberman stuff. You walk around the levels and blow stuff up. Eventually you get to the end of the area which leads to a boss battle or to another area. There are 3 main worlds which each have 15 areas and then a fourth world which is basically a boss rush. The actual platforming is fairly fun. It feels like the retro days of Bomberman and works out well.

I also liked the castle boss levels where you have to run through a level as you try to grab a key to steal the crown. Along the way you have to dodge bombs from your allies as well as the enemies. It ends up being pretty easy as the AI isn’t very good but the concept was definitely very solid. So these two gameplay styles are very good but where things go sideways is when you get to the defense levels. In those levels, you have to defend a crown from a bunch of enemies who want to grab it. The problem is you really have to rely on the enemies making mistakes because otherwise this mode is heavily skewed to the attacker. You have control over how the level is set up so that’s where you really need to put most of your effort. I would always aim to funnel the enemies through one path by putting a lot of cannons.

The first world was really rocky but then I got the hang of it. Still, the tower defense levels just aren’t particularly fun. You are trying to survive them as opposed to just having a bunch of fun the whole time. it feels like this was rather forced and shouldn’t have been in the Bomberman adventure. Tower defense can be handled well but this game clearly didn’t have the chops to pull it off.

Meanwhile the graphics are pretty solid. There isn’t a ton of animation here but the art style works really well. Additionally the soundtrack isn’t bad. It’s mainly forgettable but then you have a really intense credits song that hits you with a whole wave of emotions. I was absolutely not expecting that at all. It really showed that you can’t underestimate the series at all. Bomberman was ready to take on any AAA title in that regard. It was real catchy and I will definitely listen to it again.

There isn’t much replay value n the single player experience. Most of the content is built around the online portion of the game. Likewise most of the trophies are online based so if you want to get the Platinum trophy then you will be out of luck there. Of course if you have PS+, then you get a lot more content right out of the gate. The character roster is also fairly large so that gives you some variety in gameplay since they all have unique skill. It’s one of those areas where it felt like the game put in quite a bit of effort. The developers feel pretty random in that regard as some thing are polished and other areas are not.

Overall, Bomberman R2 is a good game but the developers should have had more confidence in the actual bomb gameplay. If the whole game was a mix of the platforming and boss levels, then this would have been an absolute success. Instead, the game tried doing a whole lot of other things and they didn’t work out. We also have plenty of puzzles which appear during the game and for some of those I don’t know how you were supposed to solve it. I would just put bombs everywhere until I got an opening. I know that wasn’t the way the puzzle was meant to be defeated though. That’s the problem there. Hopefully a third game returns to the basics.

Bomberman Jetters Review


We’re back in the world of Bomberman with this next adventure. It’s pretty fun to finally be getting back into the swing of things as this series is always pretty good. Platforming with the bomb explosions is unique and you can’t really compare this to very many other titles. I would actually say this one even improves upon the last title because of various quality of life updates. Less missable collectibles/monsters this time around. In fact you’d have to try in order to actually miss any of the creatures. The collectibles can be a little more difficult though, I actually missed two of them and had to head back. Technically you don’t necessarily need every material but I didn’t know that until the end.

The basic plot is that the villains are causing a lot of trouble once again. This time they have powered up a rocket that will either ram into a planet and destroy it or it is going to fire some kind of laser. Either way Bomberman’s mission is clear, he has to destroy the ship right away. If he can do that, then the worlds will be safe and perhaps this villain group will forever stop trying to get in the way. The main villain is protected by the elemental bombers though. You’ve got a fire bomberman, water, ice, etc. They’re all working for the villains so I guess the main Bomberman is one of the only heroes left at this point. There is also Max who is around but don’t expect him to say anything.

The graphics are really solid here and I wanted to jump into that right away. It’s super impressive how many fully animated cutscenes we have here. I was super happy about that because not many titles did this back in the day. There are 2 big cutscenes in every world which establish the boss and set the stage up very well. Meanwhile the soundtrack is fairly decent. A little less memorable I will admit but it still works well so the technicals for this game were on point. Then we have the gameplay which was really solid too which makes for a balanced game. I will jump into that now.

In each level you have to get to the goal in order to complete it. To do that, you typically have to find some kind of switch or blow some enemies up. Each world has 6 levels at first although the latter worlds tend to be 4 levels instead. The first, second, fourth, and fifth levels are classic stages. You run and jump over obstacles. Then stages 3 and 6 are the boss fights of the area. Usually the third level’s boss is fairly easy and you can use any bomb to beat him while the 6th level’s boss is more difficult and only one element will be particularly useful here. So if you miss an ingredient for one of the bombs, the level will get tricky.

This is where Max comes in. He can hurt every boss with the exception of 1 with his unique power. It takes an extremely long time to charge but has the largest range in the game. It deals a quarter of 1 heart per hit so you can beat a boss with around 20 of those. I can see this working as a self imposed hard mode of sorts. If you get hit while charging then the energy ball drops and you have to start again. It makes it so Max is actually a rather difficult character to use but I did have to resort to him twice. You can also switch to him at any point during the normal levels but there isn’t really a reason to do that. Typically Bomberman is better for every situation.

There are only 12 different monsters to recruit in this game but they are all pretty interesting. The level up system is a bit basic this time as you can only go up to level 3. So at that point you will have maxed out the monster and there isn’t much more to be done there. You level up fairly quick so I maxed out around 5 of them before I beat the game. I don’t think it would take long to max out the rest. It looks like you can also unlock a bonus world but I’m not sure how you would do that. It’s probably connected to at least one of the collectibles that you can grab. So there is a decent amount of replay value here. The main campaign’s not all that long so you’ll have it completed in under 10 hours but with the replay value it might make it up to the double digits.

I appreciated that the collectibles weren’t fully mandatory for completing the game though. This one could be fairly difficult at times but in a very fair way. You just had to really apply yourself and be good at using the bombs and not rushing. Often times you will only get yourself into trouble if you try going too fast and start bumping into enemies. That’s really where the trouble starts but if you go slow then you shouldn’t really be getting hit. Some levels can take a while, one took me close to an hour although in part that’s because I got lost.

Each level does have a map but it’s fairly zoomed out so you can still end up bumping around a lot. Level 5-1 was easily the most difficult if you ask me. You have to activate statues and play a little minigame to determine your route and there is a lot of backtracking so that often meant I would pick the wrong path and have to start again When in doubt just go back to the start of the level and retrace your steps. The good thing is that the enemies don’t respawn so feel free to knock them out and then decide on a plan. That way you have no real distractions.

Overall, Bomberman Jetters is a pretty fun game. The actual gameplay is fun and the level designs clearly had a lot of effort put into them. The sheer size of some levels could be rather daunting but the game was really fair about everything. The way that the monsters and bombs are handled was better than in previous Bomberman games as well so this leads to a very smooth experience. It’s an easy game to pick up and play and I can safely say that it did exceed my expectations. The full anime cutscenes were just another boost to add to the top. So I would definitely say to pick up this game as soon as possible. You won’t regret it!

Bomberman Max 2: Red Advance Review


It’s time for another Bomberman adventure! This is one fighter that you can’t keep down. Well, it’s definitely a cool idea to have Max get his own sub series here. Bomberman gets a cameo at the beginning and he does help out in some puzzle levels but that’s really about it for him. This time it’s Max’s show as you go through the levels and try to defeat all of the enemy robots.

There isn’t much of a story here though. It starts out with the villain turning Bomberman and his friend Max into a mini size. It’s definitely put them in a very dangerous position but fortunately the villains run off rather than pressing the advantage which worked out for the heroes. There is surprisingly not an ending cutscene so it seems to get that you probably have to 100% the game or something like that. Each world does have a ton of levels and most of them aren’t actually required but it’s not like you’re skipping them. So let me explain the setup of how this works.

When you complete a level, 2-3 portals appear. Each one will take you to another level within the world but they don’t say which ones they are. So you will go from 1-1 to 1-4 for example. Then after that you go to 1-6 or 1-3. Some portals take you backwards while others take you forwards. As a result it’s pretty much luck based. The portals themselves don’t change but at least on the first playthrough you wouldn’t know which is which. When you complete a level, the portal taking you back to that stage turns red so at least you don’t run the risk of beating the same level twice by mistake. Now that would have been annoying.

The game actually remembers your progress so if you do have to go back to an old level, the portals are still there rather than having to clear the objective again. That’s definitely a good feature, it means that at least if I ever did go back to try and 100% clear it, it wouldn’t feel like an impossible challenge. Of course this is all me assuming that there is a bonus ending. For all I know it’s just an illustration or it unlocks the credits although I’d be willing to bet that it is a true cutscene.

The graphics here are pretty good. The character models are on point and the artstyle for the GBA was good. The soundtrack is also fairly good. I wouldn’t say it’s anything too noteworthy but at the same time it’s fast paced enough to work with all of the explosions. The game itself is fairly short at around 4 hours or so. I actually went ahead and beat it all in one shot, mainly because my game’s save feature was busted. So I’m actually a bit lucky that it wasn’t longer at 10 hours or something like that.

Naturally the game will usually have a working save file so I wouldn’t hold that against the title. Also I didn’t talk much about the gameplay yet. Like I said, it’s basically a puzzle title. Each level will give you an objective like find all of the food or destroy all of the spiders. Once you do that then the portals open up which will take you to the next level. You start out with all 3 of your stats at 0, speed, bomb range, and # of bombs that can be used at once. As you blow things up you get power ups to make your stats stronger to a max of 4 in each stat.

when you get a game over your stats go back to 1 in all categories on the retry. So while it’s great that you have unlimited continues on the same level, it does mean that it can be tough at first. One level had me stumped for a long while because it was super hard to win with 1 stats but eventually I pulled it off. For the most part the bosses are a lot easier than the levels because of how huge they are. It’s really easy to tag them with explosions but the final boss is an exception. He has so many different forms and power ups that it’s really hard to stay one step ahead of him. That one took me a few different attempts.

So in the end the gameplay was good but not quite enough to make up for the game basically skipping the story entirely. The way the stages have randomized objectives each time is interesting and I like the idea of level trees where you don’t know what you’re going but not if it means that you’ll miss out on an ending. There should at least be a basic cutscene after each world. Also the game feels unfinished in some ways. The main example I have is the monsters that you can summon.

They actually have levels and stats that increase as you pick up collectibles and defeat enemies but they don’t seem to matter in the actual gameplay. Each monster does have a special ability like letting you pick up extra bombs but the ability doesn’t change or improve as you level it up. So I couldn’t figure out what the level ups were doing. They seemed to be completely pointless which is odd. Maybe it’s for a different mode but in that case there’s not much reason to include that in the story. The Gamecube game had “Pokemon Battles” mixed in with the bomb puzzles so it made sense there but that doesn’t happen here. Guess it’s a bit of a mystery for now.

Overall, Bomberman Max 2 is a good game but one that could use some quality of life updates. I think you should get a proper ending when you beat the game even if you get a true ending of sorts for doing everything. Having unlimited continues is great but having to get the power ups again can be a little rough. Still, the puzzle gameplay is on point and the levels are designed well. You really get to make the most out of the bombs that you have and it always feels satisfying to complete the levels. It’s not an easy game by any means so you really have to work for it.

Bomberman Generation Review


It’s time for the return of Bomberman and this has to be the most plot focused one that I’ve played in the series. I definitely appreciated that the game’s story took itself rather seriously this time and Bomberman was allowed to do what he does best which is blow up his opponents. No comic relief characters are around to slow him down or anything like that. As a result we have a very solid story all around and the gameplay is definitely solid. The difficulty level of this game is fairly sizable though.

The game starts with Bomberman being called in by the doctor to recover the bomb elements from around the universe. A villainous group intends to use them for nefarious purposes but Bomberman isn’t about to let this happen without a fight. He will have to go through many different obstacles and use every technique at his disposal but he is ready to do this. Nobody will be stopping him.

The gameplay is a little different from the other Bomberman titles. Yes, you are still running around the map and planting bombs but instead of blowing up boxes and being in a limited space, you go through full platforming levels. You are running, jumping, and activating different switches and stuff in order to get to the goal. Along the way you will use little creatures that can fight each other and change the abilities of your bombs. You can even change your bomb element like from water to fire, etc. For the most part the elements won’t come into play until the end of the game but it’s good to get used to them in the meantime.

Now the only dicey part in the game is the collectathon elements. You will need certain items and power ups in order to clear the obstacles. The game misleadingly only shows you when some collectables are missing but not where others are. That means without an online walkthrough you will need to just search through every level to find them and the levels can be rather large. As much as you can you should try to check every portal in every level but it’s definitely not easy. Sometimes you will miss one so just hope that it isn’t one of the mandatory ones.

I’m not really sure what the point of the monster battles part of the gameplay was though. It’s completely luck based as the computer controls both fighters and there’s just not much to it. It sort of feels like it’s just here to be here but the game’s development focus was definitely on the main gameplay so it probably should have stuck to that. There are only a few battles in the game so it’s not a big deal but in a way that just makes them even more jarring because of how sudden they are.

As for the bosses, a lot of them are tough so definitely tread carefully. I would say to try and memorize their attack patterns first and then worry about hitting them. You don’t have much health after all so just a few good hits and you’re out. Online I saw people with tons of hearts while I only had 3 so there are probably power ups somewhere that increase your hearts but I just didn’t come across them.

The most useful creature is one that lets you detonate your bombs at any time. It makes it a lot easier to lure an enemy to where you have a bomb and blow him up. It’s also quicker since you can throw a bomb and immediately blow it up compared to waiting the timer down with the normal ones. Once you get the super versions of the monsters you can even use two abilities at once which is really good. The toughest boss in the game would have to be this giant machine that keeps slamming the ground. The reason it is difficult is that the slam automatically blows up any bombs you have set down so that made my favorite one irrelevant. You basically have to place a bomb and then immediately kick it or you will be caught in the crossfire. It does not grant you any mercy, that’s for sure!

I would say I beat that boss with half luck. I just tried kicking as fast as possible and eventually it all timed perfectly where I dodged the slam and got it through the window while the slot was open. Trust me when I say that it’s hard to do that on command. So you do feel pretty proud of yourself once you have conquered the game. Meanwhile the game has full voice acting which is really cool. It really helps to immerse yourself in the game more. I do have to deduct some points for there not being an ability to skip cutscenes though. So when you die you have to watch the whole thing over again.

You can dodge that by continuing after a loss instead of exiting to the main menu but if you do that then you lose all power ups and upgrades so I’d say that’s not worth it. Maybe you can do that a few times to learn how the boss moves and fights of course but after that it’s definitely time to go back to the main menu to start at full power again. Once you are used to moving at full speeds it is really hard to get used to being back at level 1 after all.

Overall, Bomberman Generation is a pretty fun game. It really does a lot with the Bomberman series and ends up being one of the most memorable installments in the series. It’s always nostalgic going back to the Gamecube era as well since that was still the peak of all gaming experiences. One of these days I will definitely need to get the other Bomberman gamecube title. In the meantime I would recommend searching this one out, it’s a good time and the length is pretty decent. The difficulty alone will likely help add some time to this.

Amazing Bomberman Review


Bomberman is the next big icon to show up on the Apple Arcade. Unfortunately they didn’t give him the biggest effort here. The game really does the bare minimum and so ultimately I do think that it will be doomed to fade away rather quickly. This is really a game that is 90% focused on the online components with just some offline stuff. For example you can play an offline game with some bots but that’s it. There’s no set mission structure or anything like that. You can level up to unlock new parts which are called missions by doing a lot of different tasks but that’s the only time you will ever go to offline. Most tasks can be done online and are even easier that way.

So there’s no story or anything. When you jump in you will learn the basics and then jump into action. The controls are the classic Bomberman ones so it shouldn’t take long to master them. You walk around the map and drop off bombs that you want to hit the enemies with. You have to be careful as you can die to your own bomb though so there is a lot of strategy here. As you blow away enemies and objects you will pick up objects that increase your power, speed, and the number of bombs that you hold. They’re all pretty handy to be sure so you will want to keep that in mind at all times.

Now there is one part of the game that I will give some high praise and that is the soundtrack. We’re talking full lyrical pop songs that are actually pretty exciting and then some classic tunes as well. You unlock more music as you level up which is a fun bonus. It felt like the game really went above and beyond the call to action with this ost. It really overshadows the rest of the game which probably sounds like a massive diss to be honest but that’s just how it goes sometimes. The graphics are more on the okay side. They’re fine but don’t really stand out.

The gameplay is fun as always but I would say that it doesn’t work super well on the phone. It’s hard to come to a complete stop so you’ll get hit by bombs in moments where you know that you really shouldn’t have gotten tagged. That is always one of the most frustrating moments out there because there was just no reason for it. I know a controller could fix that but again, a mobile game should work well on the mobile right? I’d get more used to it the more I go though.

At the end of the day it’s still okay but the problem is there’s really no reason to play this one for long. I at least need some more single player content here. Multiplayer only/focused games can absolutely work like Fortnite but for every one that works there are probably at least 20 that don’t. This is one of those, Bomberman needs a story, it’s one of the things that he is known for. Without it, well he just doesn’t stand out quite as much.

Overall, This wasn’t my favorite title but it’s still worth checking out if you have the Arcade. I think right away you’ll see why it didn’t really work for me. It’s fun enough but just doesn’t have enough content to play around with which holds it back in a big way. Throwing in some missions or a proper story would have been great. As with any multiplayer mode you can probably buff up the enjoyment factor by 10 if you have any friends who play the game so you can hang out with them but that’s probably a longshot. I doubt this game has a very wide user base to be honest although I could be wrong. It just feels like there are too many rivals around at this point who would have probably gotten a bunch of users on their side already by now. That’s the beauty of the industry though, the amount of games that are around are basically endless.

Bomberman Tournament Review


Bomberman has returned for his next adventure! When playing through the story mode you’ll probably be wondering why this is called “Tournament” but it does have a multiplayer mode and there are some optional tournaments you can enter with the creatures so I guess that’ll do. Personally I’d say it is a bit of an untapped resource here since there’s a lot you could do with the whole Pokemon homage. As it stands you only have 2 mandatory fights in the whole game.

The basic plot is that Max has gone missing and now the Dastardly Bombers are running around causing trouble. Bomberman is called in to take these guys down once and for all. Let me tell you, this guy is absolutely ready for action and won’t be taking prisoners. Does he have the bombs needed to blow up all of the enemies around him or is he quickly going to find out the limits of his own abilities? One thing’s for sure, they never should have messed with Bomberman’s planet!

The gameplay is your classic Bomberman style to an extent with a few extra additions. You use bombs to clear out debris and enemies as you try to get to the goal. During a boss fight you use the bombs strategically to box the enemy in and land some serious damage. Where it’s a bit different here is the game’s part RPG style so you actually capture a lot of Pokemon (Karabon, but it’s so similar I’m just going to call them Pokemon) and they have special abilities. Things like kicking the bombs, throwing them, moving through walls, etc. It’s a pretty interesting way to add some depth to the gameplay although the only mild annoyance is to switch your equipped Pokemon (You can only have 1 equipped at a time) you have to go into the start menu and switch through some tabs. Like I said, not the most convenient option for sure.

Some abilities are permanent at least so you don’t need the Pokemon equipped. Another benefit to having one equipped is that any items you find along the map are automatically added to that creature’s level. You’ll see a lot of attack, defense, and special point boosts. They all go to the one you have equipped and so if you have none equipped then they are just wasted. There are tons of these everywhere so you don’t need to go out of your way to grind them. You’ll get the power ups fairly quick, trust me on that. I didn’t focus on this and I still won my two matches rather quickly.

There are also a small handful of minigames in the story but only like 2-3 so you can easily forget that they’re even a thing here. It was still nice to see though. So the game gets props for having a lot of different gameplay styles in the mix. I also think it tried a little harder to have a grand story as it’s all played fairly serious and the villain designs were on point. It’s a lot older so there isn’t any voice acting or any of that but the story’s on point.

The graphics could stand to be a little more detailed but they work well enough. You can always follow the action of what’s happening here. The ost is also surprisingly good, there are actually a number of solid songs as you go through the levels. That’s also good because it’s a fairly small soundtrack so you need to prepare to hear each song quite a few times. The story I’d say is probably like 4-5 hours give or take. It took me longer than expected mainly because I happened to bump into a game ending glitch in the first world. The character just would not let me heal the Pokemon to continue. I had to replay the world 2 more times after the initial playthrough before it finally worked. I still don’t know what the problem was but in the end I just followed a video walkthrough for that level exactly. I must have been doing something in the wrong order but it was definitely a bit of a bizarre glitch.

Well, glitches can happen anywhere I suppose. On the whole the game is still fun enough where you will have a good time. You are rewarded as you play through by getting stronger and stronger. It’d be nice if more of the secret caves had nice stuff in them though. Half the time it’s an NPC just telling you basic information and you wonder why they were hidden. Give me more power ups and hearts. The game isn’t a cakewalk but it’s not too difficult so you should have a smooth time even without a lot of the bonus hearts to help you out with. Always keep a potion on hand just in case you need it.

For the most part you’ll find most of the collectibles just while playing normally anyway. Each world doesn’t trigger its story until you talk to someone so to be on the safe side I always talked with everyone in every village so you end up grabbing everything else too. My main advice in the gameplay/boss battles is to run and gun. Constantly throw out as many bombs as possible behind you and that should help give you the edge in combat. Bomberman veterans will really know how to trap the opponent right away but I’m definitely more casual. So I find the best way is to just throw out a lot of bombs and eventually you will hit the opponent. Just make sure you don’t get hit too because your own bombs do 2 hearts worth of damage to you.

Overall, Bomberman Tournament is a pretty fun game. The Pokemon addition is pretty fun but the battles feel like a missed opportunity since they weren’t incorporated into the story all that much. Additionally there is no gameplay in those as you’re just watching the characters fight each other. I definitely would have changed that up a bit to have active gameplay in the mix as well. It would make the fighting feel more engaging and would encourage you to level them up. Instead it’s basically full RNG which isn’t quite as satisfying. You are playing for the bomb gameplay first and foremost though and that is as smooth as can be. The Bomberman series definitely understands how to pull that off without a hitch by this point.

Super Bomberman R Review


I remember when this game came out many years ago for the Switch. I always thought it looked fun but I suppose it just wasn’t fun enough to go all the way and buy. Well that all changed now because I finally got to check it out for the PS4. It’s a pretty fun game but also certainly a very short one. You’ll have it conquered within a few hours no sweat. After that there is replay value but I would have liked it if the game could have been a bit longer. There’s a whole lot you can do with the bomb gameplay.

The story starts off with a guy who looks a lot like Dr. Wily deciding that he is going to take over the world. He isn’t going to do it slowly or subtly. No, this guy has hired the Dastardly Bombers to do his bidding. The Bombermen have to rise up to take them down but unfortunately only the main one is ready for action. The others keep slacking off and holding him back. Is there any way for them to come out on top or is this the end of the road?

The story is definitely on the weak side. I appreciate the fact that there are full illustrations and voice acting here but at the same time you can’t help but feel that it could be better. There’s a lot of fun you can have with a plot about the Bombermen but it’s definitely played more for laughs. The character designs are all good though. It may not be the story I had been waiting for but at least it did have a full story and you don’t want to take that for granted.

As for the gameplay, well Bomberman is all about dropping bombs along the map and making sure you don’t step in them. You have to maneuver carefully as you destroy debris and enemies without getting hit in the crossfire. It’s a pretty unique gameplay style that is also a good bit of fun. You have to go through 8 levels in each world before fighting a boss. There are 5 full worlds and then one bonus level. Each world will take you under an hour, maybe half an hour or so. This is a pretty short game as a result so personally I would have doubled the worlds. Alternately split up the levels so each one is a separate level and then do about 100 of those instead of the current number. I thin you could do it since in theory changing the layouts of the level for each mission shouldn’t be too difficult. At least it’s all using the same assets and character models so I feel like it should be really easy. You don’t want to extend the game for no reason but a few more hours helps it to really feel like a full bargain.

Although as mentioned there is replay value here in the form of bonus levels. You also have multiplayer mode and of course you can play as a bunch of different characters as well. All of that helps to really make Bomberman stand out a little more than it would otherwise. The production values all feel really high too. The character models look really sharp and everything is in very high resolution. The soundtrack is mostly forgettable with the exception of the end credits song.

That one definitely does stand out so big props to the game there. the lyrics are also really emotional, that’s the kind of heart you expect for this game. I think a sequel should really try to have the characters take everything at least a little more seriously. Do that and the whole game will absolutely benefit as a result. You already have cool visuals for the villains and a large cast so this is really the next big step. I’d definitely be encouraged to buy the game a lot sooner if that was the case. Seriously count me in there, it would be the right play.

The game can also be rather difficult with the boss battles in particular. You have to figure out how to hurt them while in battle and their attack range is really good. When you die you can revive as long as you have 300 coins left. I always had enough coins so I was good but it’s something to keep an eye out for. Otherwise you may find yourself at the dreaded game over screen and that would definitely be rough.

I recommend taking advantage of the few seconds of invincibility that you get when you first respawn. Trust me this is absolutely massive and helped me a lot with some of the bosses. Otherwise I’d almost say to button mash because it’s hard to really plan things out when you’re going super fast like this. Just throw a lot of bombs around and you should be fine. During the levels you can get upgrades to range and number of bombs as long as your speed. Go for all of them and blow up the negative power ups.

This can mean taking a little longer to complete a level as you blow everything up looking for power ups but it is really worth it for those boss battles. I was quite impressed with how tough those could be. I died several times but fortunately you get 8 lives for each chapter and of course with the continues you’ll usually have enough coins for 4-5. I only needed 1 continue for each chapter except the last one which helped for saving coins. I’m not totally sure how you earn coins. You get them for beating chapters but try not to put yourself in a position where you’re totally out of them or that could be risky.

Overall, Super Bomberman R is definitely a pretty fun game. It may be on the short side and the story wasn’t particularly impressive but at the end of the day I still had a good time. It’s a title that you can get for really cheap nowadays so there’s no reason not to get it. Hopefully Bomberman makes a return to the AAA home console games one of these days. There is a lot more you can do with the premise after all but until then we’ll have this game at the ready.

Super Bomberman R Online Review


It’s time for the latest game in the classic battle royale style. At this point there are quite a few that have tried this our such as Mario, Tetris, Pac-Man, and now we have Bomberman. Unfortunately this one may be the weakest of the batch. It has some interesting ideas but it does feel like they put less effort into it compared to the others. The menu layouts aren’t great and the tutorial doesn’t even cover a lot of the controls. There isn’t a practice mode where you can try this out for yourself either. So at the end of the day what that means is this one just doesn’t hold up.

The main mode of course is to jump in and start a 64 man free for all. You run around the map and drop off some bombs in order to knock the other players out. You have two health points so if you get hit twice then that’s it for you. When the match starts you are effectively boxed in and have to blow up crates to get out of there. Each bomb destroys some tiles on all 4 sides of it. You want to stay out of range since your own bombs can certainly hurt you. After a while the stage will start to explode so you have to go and run into a different room. Once the blocks fall again you restart the process.

It may sound simple enough but you also have to factor in the special abilities. Each character aside from the main Bomberman fighters have a special ability to watch out for. For example, Solid Snake is in this game and he has the ability to turn invisible. That way you can’t see him until he throws the bomb and it is too late to dodge. Another character seems to have some kind of magnet. A lot of the characters need to be purchased so I didn’t try their abilities out but this is an interesting twist.

In most free for all games each character has the same abilities. Changing your character is purely cosmetic in order for everyone to have the same playing field. Well, that’s not the case here. Your characters all have way different stats. Another example is how many bombs you can put down. For example the average character can only drop one at a time but some characters can drop more than that. Then you have characters with bombs that have a longer reach, can throw farther, etc.

Due to each of the characters having different stats, I definitely expect we’ll see characters belonging to different tiers before long. Not every character is equal this time around so I imagine this game will be less balanced than all of the others. That being said, we’ll see if enough people are playing the game for that to become a big concern.

On one of the first days of the game it was already taking a while to get a match. I suspect that’s more an issue with the servers that they’re using and not a lack of player base though. It just seems like it would be way too soon for that to really become a factor just yet right? It does make it a little harder to really get into the action as well. There’s just a whole lot of waiting each time which gets old. You’ll want to be reading something as you wait.

The graphics are good though. It all looks pretty modern and you can really feel the energy behind all of the character designs. The levels look nice as well and the game reminds me a lot of the Mega Man Powered Up game from back in the day. It’s got that kind of a vibe/look at the very least. So I have no complaints with the graphics. The music seems a bit limited but it’s not bad either. You won’t have much time to think about it to be honest.

It is rather odd that the game doesn’t properly teach you how to play the game though. Figuring out what each of the power ups do will be up to you. Additionally the same is also true for learning how and when you can pick up and throw bombs. If anything I think the game could have done without that. It makes the strategy aspect a little more intense if you have to run around and dodge as opposed to just throwing the bombs away. Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of the labyrinth?

In the end, the game just isn’t nearly as fun as it could have been. Pac-Man was hype with how the gameplay worked and Tetris was absolutely stellar. The shooter games like Fortnite and Call of Duty have the style on lock of course. I don’t think any of these will be passing those but at least you want them to put up a fight. Tetris did that really well by adding a ton of bonus content through the years and the gameplay just really works.

Bomberman feels more like a cash-in with no real content to speak of. You have a battle pass so eventually you will unlock some costumes and such but it takes forever. I played 5 battles but with all of the waiting between levels that wasn’t as quick as I would have liked. It’s not a bad game but it does feel like one that is just trying to grab ahold of the battle royale trend. The problem is, with so many others to choose from I don’t see why you would stick with Bomberman for more than a few days.

Overall, Super Bomberman R definitely underperformed. I would have to say that it just couldn’t quite keep up with the others. It really didn’t feel like it was trying either. There’s not a lot of heart to this game. There would need to be some big fixes/patches to really get this one back on the right track. If you’re a huge Bomberman fan then you should check this one out, but otherwise I’d say to give it a skip.
