Mario Kart World Review


Mario Kart is one of those titles that is so famous because you can have unlimited fun with it. It’s the game that keeps on going. Well the new one for the Nintendo Switch was certainly getting a lot of hype. Nintendo was so confident in it that they basically were not coming out with any other titles for the Switch 2. It was this or nothing. Well, after playing the game I can say that it’s pretty good. I’m not going to call it amazing or anything like that but I do think they put in a solid amount of effort here. I can definitely see people playing this one for a very long time yet.

The game doesn’t have a story mode so you’ll probably jump right into the races. You can do the classic cups, knockout races, or jump straight online. I went for the cups first of course and they were definitely fun. The kind of races that you never forget because of the hype graphics and everything. At this point some of the items have been nerfed to the point where they are no longer a huge threat (Blue shell) but it’s still nostalgic to see them. Mario Kart is one of those games that is really easy to pick up and play even if it is hard to master.

A new mechanic in this game is the ability to grind off rails and different objects to get aerial boosts. I’ve seen people do some really crazy stunts with these jumps so it’s safe to say that this may have actually raised the bar for overall technical ability. I’m certainly a rookie when it comes to that so I will need to do a whole lot more training. Still, the online races are so chaotic that you can absolutely win or lose even without knowing the mechanic. With how many racers there are at once, you can even say that it is near pure RNG for the first lap or so.

As with most Mario Kart games, you probably want to stick to 2nd place for most of the race online so you dodge the worst of the items and then rocket your way to 1st at the end. Of course it is much harder to pull off that strategy than it sounds. Misplay your timing and you are basically asking to be crushed. All it takes is one wrong hit and you will fall to 8th or even lower. That is what you really need to watch out for.

As expected the graphics are really quite impressive here. The game looks like a Switch 2 title without a doubt. I enjoy the really big character roster here even if most of the characters are basically palette swaps. Yeah it can be a bit on the lazy side, but as long as it inflates the count then I’m good. We have over 140 characters in the game which is crazy and a lot of people think we will eventually have over 200 with DLC. Now that would really be a sight to see. I’ve unlocked most of them, I’ll definitely go back to get even more once they start releasing new characters. It’s definitely the benefit of being a pick up and play title.

The soundtrack is also pretty good, in fact I would say it’s a bit better than I expected it would be. One of the tracks even sounds like something out of a Sonic game which is real impressive. So Nintendo definitely showed up for this one and I would expect no less considering that this was their big flagship game. There is infinite replay value with the whole online play and everything. You never have to stop racing. I also appreciate that they keep track of some details like your race score online.

The stickers are around here as collectibles but I didn’t think they were all that good. My main problem with the implementation is that you don’t know how many are left before picking them up and additionally you can’t really show them off. We still need something more like a formal leaderboard some day to really get things rolling. The new Free Roam map is fun but definitely missing some key essentials like a map that lets you keep track of everything. The basic map we have now doesn’t do a whole lot of good.

All in all, there’s nothing to really dislike about the game. So you may wonder why it’s not a bit higher? Well, as fun as the game is, it just doesn’t feel like it’s a must play. It doesn’t quite have the style and flash that Sonic Crossworlds represents or the really cool story mode of F Zero. So this one has to rely purely on the racing gameplay which is fun, but inherently not quite as impressive. I would still play this for hours and hours if I didn’t have other games to play but otherwise it definitely tends to hit the shelf a bit quicker. It really needed a good story mode or some kind of feature that would blow you away.

Overall, Mario Kart World is definitely a really fun game. Nintendo did good here as expected. Now technically speaking it’s probably not something you need to buy a whole console for, but considering that you save $30 by getting the bundle, it’s certainly worth it if you ever plan to buy the game eventually. I’ll find myself returning to that game from time to time an right now is probably when the community will be at its best. There’s no rush since people will still be playing the game in droves for years to come but if you enjoy the racing then you should jump in. Allow yourself to be sucked into the hype and enjoy this 2025 Mario experience. It’s certainly taking Nintendo a long while to give us the next big 3D platformer after all. I suppose DK might end up being the next big Switch 2 title in the meantime.

Marvel Rivals Review


Marvel Rivals is a game that really got huge. For a while there is seemed like everybody was playing it. I would say it is even still huge right now. They keep on adding new characters and of course the gameplay itself is fun enough. That said, I don’t quite get the appeal the way that most people do. To me the gameplay is fine but not something I would end up being stuck to for a long while.

There isn’t a real story mode here of course so you’re really just thrown right into the mix. I was glad to have a tutorial though and did take advantage of that. Basically you’re in a team battle and either have to protect something or attack it. You win based on which team achieved their objective. Whenever you die you are able to switch characters on the fly. It’s pretty nice that you aren’t locked in so you can constantly be switching. The only real restriction is that you can’t have two people using the same character and that makes sense since it could definitely get real confusing real fast. So this way you sidestep that problem completely. As a result I got to play as numerous characters even over the course of a few matches.

The characters are divided into different classes and all have different ways of playing. My favorite character was easily Human Torch. It felt nice being able to fly around and deal out devastating blows to my opponents. I contributed quite heavily in the first match where I scored over 30 KOs. We won that round and it was the perfect way to start. I doubt Torch is one of the most broken characters or anything like that but his moveset is absolutely solid. Whenever you have a projectile fighter like this, you can bet that I’ll enjoy them.

My second favorite character was Groot. He may not be able to fly but his long reach works great as a main attack. I would say the only real downside is that his special moves are a bit boring. He can summon walls to bock incoming attacks which is pretty nice but it doesn’t actually deal damage the way I would like to see it. At the end of the day you need KOs to win here and you get KOs by dealing damage. Still, I got in my share of KOs with the standard attacks.

I definitely didn’t end up mixing well with the brawlers. For example I died fairly quick when playing as Captain America, Wolverine, and Thor. It was just hard to get in close to the other team before I would be taken down by everyone waving around their lasers all the time. I’m sure there are methods to making those characters work but it was definitely a real tough trick for me. A game like this definitely has a lot of RNG as well of course but I won’t deny the high level of skill too. Good aim will go a long way here. The same goes for memorizing where all the health items are at. I’m guessing they are randomly generated but still limited to a few locations rather than just being anywhere.

The graphics are definitely really good. Some of the character designs will certainly take some getting used to though. They really went quite different with a few of them like Wolverine. That said, it’s a consistent art style and I wouldn’t say the designs are bad. I would definitely get used to them after enough time playing the game. The soundtrack is less noticeable with all of the shooting and everything. It seemed good to me but again I’m not sure with how much confidence I can really say that. Either way I guess it’s not ultra important.

I mentioned a few times that the gameplay isn’t super addicting to me and I’ll quickly explain. There is no single player combat mode here and no individual life system. So this means in the team combats everyone has unlimited lives until the match ends. For me a game like this is always way more fun when you have your own life. I know this doesn’t reflect in sales numbers which is why many games have gone away from that model but I still miss it. I’ve never liked the idea that I could be playing amazing and dealing tons of damage and I can still lose because the rest of my team let me down. It just doesn’t feel like this is the way the game ought to be played.

I would at least like the option of a single player mode here. Start out with 25 fighters or something and no extra lives. If you lose then you lose but that’s it. I would find it all to be way more engaging and challenging. Additionally it would force you to get good. Then if the mode doesn’t do well they can always shut it down later. Still, that’s just what would make me enjoy the game better. At that point I’m basically advocating for a completely different title so it’s not a very reasonable request. Just an explanation on why none of the Overwatch titles have ever stuck with me. I do hope this game continues to be successful though because it’s at least pretty fun to watch.

Overall, Marvel Rivals is pretty good. It’s not really a game that would hold my attention for very long but there is definitely a clear audience. I also imagine it’s the kind of game that gets to be way more fun when you know other people wo play it as well. Once you build up that community spirit then it’s really off to the races. You just want to get in there and have fun. As the character roster continues to grow, the game will only get more and more fun. I’m rather curious just how many characters there will be by the end. It seems like a game that could easily get over 50 characters by the end. The toughest part will probably be picking enough unique moves where nobody feels like a clone character.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Review


This is one of those games I sorta forgot existed for a while there. I think it was technically a big deal but yeah it really vanished. It’s one of those very cinematic games where you get to embrace the story over gameplay but there is still a good amount of gameplay to be had. It’s a fun title but as a result it is also one of those games where you won’t really have much to do if you want to just have fun playing it later on. The cinematic part also means the game will probably be moving a bit slower on a second playthrough although of course it’s all towards the goal of making the first playthrough as good as possible.

The story starts off pretty fast with the Guardians getting into trouble as per usual and now they owe the Nova Corps a whole lot of money. Star Lord gets them to give the Guardians a few days to pay off this fee but even then it will not be easy. We’re talking an incredible sum after all so now they are going to have to scam some folks. Perhaps the legendary monster tamer lady will be a good target. Meanwhile some dark forces are approaching the universe and seek to destroy the Nova Corps. This includes some people who are very important to Star Lord.

The story may start out fairly small in scale but naturally it is a classic save the universe story by the end. It’s a solid story all the way through and you should be very engaged. This is where the cinematic approach works well as there are endless cutscenes here as you go off on your quest. The combat gameplay that we do get is also a lot of fun. You have to really strategize on how you will use each member of your party as well as their various abilities. Particularly until you get to the final chapters where you learn the revive spell. Until then you always have to watch out because a few lucky shots can pull you under.

Personally I always tend to go with a few familiar options instead of trying everything. So I would use everyone’s super, then their O move which seemed to be the strongest ones. I wouldn’t even bother with the other two options. You always have quite a few methods of attack here so at least there is no reason to worry yourself. If something’s not working then try something else. None of the enemies should pose enough of a problem where you can’t figure it out after some troubleshooting. In some ways the platforming could be the toughest part like how I would end up falling more than once.

The graphics are pretty solid here. It’s going for a bit of a live action look but with enough colors where it still feels enough like a comic. The energy effects are nice and the whole time you really feel like a big budget was put into the title. Just look at all of the songs they were able to squeeze inside. You will hear a lot of music as the game goes on and they’re all fairly catchy tunes. You also have the ability to play a mixtape once per fight that completely restores everyone’s health and super attacks. It’s a rather broken ability I must say, but I like how it ties in with how much Star Lord enjoys a good tune.

The game also has a few different fake outs which was really fun. That always adds to a game and the plot twists will keep you guessing as well. I would definitely enjoy a game like this for the Avengers and X-Men at some point. I would say Spider-Man already has this treatment with the big two games that came out a while back. You can tell a whole lot of stories with this although I imagine it probably takes a long time to produce one of these games.

I ended up getting most of the trophies during my normal playthrough and I can’t say that I was really doing much out of the ordinary. It can be nice to play a game that is really generous like this one. There are also a lot of bonus elements and collectibles that don’t even relate to any trophy. This is an especially nice point because it means true collectors can have fun doing a lot of extra exploring while people who want the Platinum can still get that without too much hassle. It’s a win/win for everyone involved.

If there’s anything I would have liked to see, it would have been having more of a hub world. Letting you go back and forth to the different planets on a whim to have fun and of course grind out some levels with the minions. The game has a level up system but you actually max everyone out in the game fairly early and at that point the EXP just vanishes entirely. I suppose this is a decent way to control your level and make sure the player doesn’t get too broken but they probably should have added a wider range of abilities for you to power up. It’s super rare that you play a game where you reach the level cap with everyone like this.

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy is definitely a fun game. It is a pretty decent length too and there is some replay value with all of the different dialogue options. I doubt you would really go as far as to try and hear them all but the game does deserve a lot of credit for just how many they put in here. It must have taken a long while to record every piece of dialogue. The Platinum seems relatively easy to get but will still take some work. If you like a good action title then you should definitely pick this one up.

God Eater: Resurrection Review


This was my first God Eater title and I can definitely tell you that the length lives up to the reputation. I was playing this one for well over 50 hours and the game is quite difficult. If you’re looking for a big challenge and a lot of replay value then this is the game for you. Even after conquering it, there were plenty of extra levels left to complete. That’s how meaty this game is.

The general plot takes us to a world where monsters continually attack and do their best to crush humanity. These monsters can really show up out of nowhere and most humans are extinct at this point. We protect a final hub where scientists are trying to find a way out of this situation. There is a project ongoing that will supposedly allow humans to leave in safety but there are a lot of secrets about this project. Is it really for our own good? Well, time is ticking since the monsters are progressively getting stronger and stronger. One thing’s for sure, this is humanity’s final stand.

You play as a cadet who just joined the group and you get to see him quickly rise up the ranks. He is one of the super rare new types so he is able to command a powerful god eater weapon. Basically these are weapons which utilize parts of Aragami (The monsters) to eat the other monsters. You rise up the ranks as you clear missions and also begin learning new ways to use the sword. By the end of the adventure you are one of the highest ranking people around.

This version of God Eater basically brings 3 whole story modes within it. The final length of the story is 100 missions. Each mission can range in some from 3 minutes to around 20. You do have a timer of 30-40 minutes total but odds are if you haven’t won within 20 minutes, you’re probably dead. It’s not a game where it is easy or even practical to stall until the end. Aside from the 100 story missions, you’ve got another 100+ bonus missions. Even though they are “bonus” missions, you can expect that you will be playing through a whole lot of them. It’s not really much of an option because they will let you get the materials that you need to boost up your weapons and defense.

Without good weapons, you aren’t winning. Better weapons means better attack power and your shield controls your overall defense. If it’s too low then even taking one hit will one-shot your entire health bar. For the final boss that was happening to me quite a lot until I finally got a better shield. You can learn abilities that help to counter this like still having 1 health point left but it’s not something that you want to ever have to rely on. So better equipment is pretty much a must and since resources are scarce, be very careful which ones you level up. There are 4 elements, Blizzard, Fire, Spark, and Divine.

You will need all of them at one point or another so you want to level up 4 weapons minimum. Then you have slashers, crushers, and piercers. They come into play with each element and now you have a tough dilemma because you can’t feasibly maintain 12 different weapons. So pick your poison as they say. It will catch up with you at some point and that’s when you really find out just how skilled you are. Just how good are your fundamentals here? If they’re not good enough then you will definitely be in trouble.

Generally I would say the gameplay is that of a 3D brawler. You have your gun and your physical sword and you just swing away at your opponent. While using your blade you can also block with your shield. Blocking is incredibly handy because some shields like the tower shield will completely nullify damage. It’s incredibly handy and it’s just tough to get out of the habit of dodge rolling away from attacks. There is no invincibility in rolling here so that means trying to dodge that way is incredibly dangerous.

I didn’t really get the hang of this til near the end. So get into the habit as soon as possible. When using your gun, you are unable to block so you have to be careful or you can be caught in a bit of a death loop. Between that and my guns not dealing much damage, I mainly just used a blade during the game. I know most say that the gun is actually the best weapon to have but I just couldn’t get the hang of it. There’s a whole bullet game within the game on deigning guns and I was not particularly good at that.

Meanwhile you can customize your god eater on how it absorbs parts from your opponent. It’s a pretty important part of the game so you should spend some time here. I definitely focused on the quick dash which I found to be the most helpful. There are a ton of parts to buy and abilities to learn so just try not to get overwhelmed. There are hundreds and hundreds of options but of course they are not all equal. So just find the ones that you really like and ignore the rest. If you start losing a lot, then switch things up.

The game has a ton of variety so while you will get stuck, you will always have options to get around it. That’s why you absolutely need to do a lot of trial runs and figure out what it is exactly that you want to do. Once you have that in mind and a preferred fighting style, it all gets easier. If the sheer repetition gets to you, maybe just take some breaks. 50+ hours is a lot of time after all and the game’s got a fairly low amount of different enemies to fight. You’re mainly fighting the same 10 enemies in different recolors the whole time. There are also only around 5 level environments so the layout will look similar there too.

I do have to admit that this part felt a little lazy but the title is mostly concerned with getting you sheer amounts of levels to conquer. I suppose I can’t slam that too much. The graphics look pretty good for the game. It’s far from top end quality however there are 1-2 fully animated moments in the game which is cool. There is also an extended CG fight in one of the last cutscenes which was really cool. As always, a big benefit to a long game like this is the fact that you really get attached to the characters. That adds to the impact of the story and so overall there is definitely a lot of fun to be had here. Also seeing the credits 3 different times was intense.

Naturally there is a ton of replay value with all of the extra levels and weapons to obtain. It’s definitely a game that you will end up sticking with for quite a long while. You’ll probably continue to improve the more you play as well since you will start to notice enemy attack patterns and also be able to react quicker on your side as well. Never stop adapting and improving as you play the game. That is how you really get the long term victory and also clear levels a bit quicker. Every few minutes you save in a level really counts.

Overall, This was a pretty fun game. Definitely a long title that feels like it has a bit of padding at times but it was still fun. It’s clear that a whole lot of effort was put into this one. It is far from being any kind of cash-in. I’m sure developing the game took a really long time too. I’m interested in seeing how the sequel does. I would say a good story makes or breaks your enthusiasm with the title. If it’s anything like the first game then I’m sure we are in a good spot. If you like fighting monsters then you should definitely check this one out.

Cobra Kai: The Karate Kid Saga Continues Review


Cobra Kai is one of those titles that definitely got big out of nowhere. I remember thinking that a sequel to Karate Kid would be reasonable but to think it would get two different video games? I wouldn’t have guessed that. Now that the games are pretty cheap, it was time to get them and see just what I’ve been missing all this time. Well, suffice it to say, the game is pretty fun. It’s not great or anything but I enjoyed the story and between the two campaigns there is a decent amount of content here. Any beat em up fan will get a kick out of this.

I went with the Cobra Kai story of course. The title starts with two kids being thrown into detention for having another fight. One of them is a big fan of the Cobra Kai dojo wile the other is a Miyagi stan. They both have differing accounts of what exactly happened that caused so much drama. From the Cobra Kai side, it seems like Daniel LaRusso is causing a ton of trouble and really making a mess of things. It seems like he can’t move on from the past and so he has to be stopped before karate is fully corrupted. Where is he hiding though?

The gameplay here is a classic 2D beat em up. You have to fight through waves and waves of opponents as you proceed forward. You have your basic moves, super moves, and you can switch between your 4 characters at will. You lose a level if all 4 are defeated but generally I don’t see that being a problem. The game isn’t one of the more difficult ones. Maybe if you opt not to use any upgrades then it could be tricky. The upgrades are really handy since they reduce cooldown timer on your special attacks and also increase the attack power itself.

You earn the currency to use the power ups as you defeat enemies and clear specific challenges like finishing off 15 opponents with your signature move. Basically you’ll get a ton of these challenges by playing normally but definitely check them out at the dojo since there are some you will need to actively try for. The upgrades are all increases of about 1% but they really add up. You don’t want to miss out unless you are intentionally trying to make the game more difficult.

How the game works is there are normal levels and boss levels. The normal levels are circles on the map which lead to the boss levels. These stages have no cutscenes and you’re just blowing enemies away. Each boss level has two big fighters who stand in your way in addition to all the minions. Clearing a boss level gives you a clue point. Once you have 8 clue points, you can go to the final boss lair and fight Daniel LaRusso. There seem to be about 12-14 boss levels so you really have some options on where you want to go. Also if you feel you aren’t strong enough to defeat him yet, then you could play those levels for more EXP.

Be warned, whichever Dojo you start with, you will not be able to switch back, to them again during New Game+. In that mode you must play as the second dojo and complete the game again. That will then unlock the true ending so you can see here how the game has a certain amount of depth to it. Definitely not something to be underestimated. The levels are reasonably long too. The normal levels are only around 10 minutes or so but the boss ones can approach 25. You don’t want to lose there. Now, I never did so it’s possible there is a checkpoint or something but I wouldn’t risk it. Just keep fighting as hard as you can.

I’d say the most important thing here is to use a lot of special attacks. You gain invincibility during almost all of them and they cool down very quickly even without upgrades. So keep on spamming those and spam your dodge in order to stay one step ahead. As you play through the game you will quickly get a feel for how to deal with each enemy. When in a group, be careful about hitting an opponent while they’re down. You have no super armor during this maneuver which means that you will be super vulnerable.

Perfect blocking/parrying an attack does restore some of your health though so this is really something to be aware of. Most of the enemies can seem a bit unpredictable at first but they keep the same movements throughout the game. So eventually you should have a good understanding of how to defeat them, or at least I would figure you would. There are a lot of health items that are dropped in each level though so this may not even be necessary. Your fallen allies even revive after a little time.

There are also a few collectibles in each level so that will help during the replay value. Getting the Platinum doesn’t look insane but it definitely will take time so you really can’t go too easy on it. Expect to be here for a little while. Fortunately the gameplay is fun so that works well enough. Considering that you can get the game for about $5 nowadays, I would say that’s even a bargain. It’s definitely got more content than your average tie-in.

As for the music, it gets surprisingly good as you play through the game. It’s trying very hard to emulate the old music and you can feel that but after a while it just starts to come into its own. Perhaps it is from listening to the same themes so many times but you begin to enjoy them. That’s a pretty good feat. The graphics are definitely sub par though. Stuff you could have seen on the PS2. I appreciate that there is voice acting though. So all in all, the technicals are good enough.

Overall, Cobra Kai is one of those video games that takes you down memory lane. They don’t make a ton of games like this anymore. It feels very authentic and is a lot of fun. You will be done with it quickly but not too quickly considering the price. It may even make you want to watch the TV show and see if it can hold its own with the game. I’ll be going through the second game fairly quick so you can expect a review on that one soon enough. It uses a completely different gameplay style so that will either be a good thing or backfire big time.

Donkey Kong ’94 Review


It’s time for the return of Donkey Kong. This is one of Mario’s first ever antagonists and I can tell you that nobody ever expected he would end up becoming the great hero that he is today. Well, that wasn’t the case here as he’s up to his old tricks in kidnapping Pauline so now Mario has to stop him. This time DK is well prepared though and has hidden behind dozens and dozens of levels. Can Mario get through them all in time to save her? One thing’s for sure, it’s unlikely that Pauline would be friends with DK again after all of this.

The gameplay initially starts off with the classic Donkey Kong style as you jump through the different floors and try to dodge all the barrels. The level then ends once you reach the top. Well after a few levels of this the game transforms into a more standard platformer and this is when things get real. Each world has levels in multiples of 4 where you fight DK every 4. So some worlds have 8 levels while others have up to 16. It’s definitely a lot of levels to get through. The objective in the platforming levels is to get the key and bring it over to the chest in order to open it. This may sound easy but as the levels go, there are more and more obstacles in your path.

I was pretty impressed at different points with how creative the game would get. It was also rather difficult, certainly a lot more difficult than you would expect a game to be nowadays. Nintendo was not holding back so you can expect to die a number of times here. All it takes is to mistime one of your jumps and it is curtains. You can throw your key around to get past some but if you don’t pick it up within a few seconds, it will respawn back to where you first grabbed it. So you often have to move really fast or you will have just lost a bunch of ground for no reason.

The levels tend to be on the smaller side so it doesn’t feel bad if you lose too much though. Ultimately it comes down to having a plan. As long as you know what you are going to do then time will rarely if ever be a problem for you. Sometimes you just can’t execute your plan quick enough so there will be a degree of trial and error here. Just don’t give up, keep on swinging and eventually you will make it. If you’re super stuck, try looking for an alternate path because sometimes you’re just looking at the puzzle all wrong.

The toughest parts are definitely when a level has different arrow orbs. These create blocks that can be climbed or walked on depending on where you pout them. They often end up being the toughest because there are tons of ways to use them since you choose where they go. In most puzzles, you’re figuring out how to use equipment that has been put in specific places so that is way easier. Well, just keep your composure and you’ll be fine.

The graphics are pretty good. The game looks nice throughout from the backgrounds to the character designs and items. It has that Nintendo charm to it at all times. The soundtrack is more forgettable but DK games rarely keep pace with the classic Mario titles anyway. As long as they’re close, I suppose that’s the important thing. The story mode will take you a decent time to get through thanks to all of the levels. Probably 3-4 hours if I had to guess and potentially a bit more depending on how many times you need to try again. You’re getting a pretty decent bang for your buck even if it’s not crazy long or anything like that.

I guess my biggest piece of advice when playing the game is to try not stopping much. It’s better to take the wrong approach and lose a life than to be left wondering what to do and lose when the time runs out. The timer isn’t especially high so it will run out rather quickly and in the worst case you will be just as lost when you respawn. At least when you die from the first method you can rule that out as an option. It’s not like the levels are crazy complex so just knowing one way that isn’t correct will really help you narrow things down.

As for the boss fights, those are pretty self explanatory. You have to hit Dk with the barrels that he drops down. Keep the pressure on him and you’ve got this. Unlike the levels, I would say the bosses always tend to be pretty easy. Not crazy easy like you can close your eyes during them or anything like that but easy enough where I don’t expect you will die much at all. It’s just not that game.

Overall, Donkey Kong is definitely a fun game. It takes you back to a simpler time of gaming and it holds up really nicely. I’d be up for more titles like this one. The whole transporting the key around thing was definitely really creative. The Mario vs DK series is still kicking so there is always a chance to keep on making new games like this one. Until then, you should definitely check this out on the Nintendo Switch Online. There is no downside to doing it after all so why not right?

DC: Dark Legion Review


It’s time for the latest DC app game! I gotta say it’s pretty crazy how the last one is completely dead and has no online presence despite being fairly new while this one is already way more popular. It’s not even as fun which is the ultimate irony for me but I am glad that people are having fun. It won’t be sticking around for me on this journey but I do see the potential.

The story begins with the Batman Who Laughs taking over the multiverse. He has destroyed all who opposed him in every timeline. We are finally down to the last timeline where the player, Terry must put a stop to his evil designs. Terry will be working with Earth’s mightiest heroes but when he gets to Earth they are already on the losing side of the battle. Green Arrow, Catwoman, Batman, and Wonder Woman appear to be the last fighters left as Superman vanished recently. Can they find and rescue all of the heroes and villains to unite against this common foe?

The fact that there is a mysterious tower in the middle of the city drawing everyone towards it just like in the last mobile game for DC is a fun coincidence. Still, everything else is very different here. For starters the art style is definitely way more comic book inspired. Everybody looks like their traditional selves this time around. I would also say the art style is just a lot better even if the animation itself may lag behind the former game. I enjoyed the fact that we do have real cutscenes and voice acting here. Yes it may be a bit cheesy to have Superman punching Batman around and the latter surviving but Batman does say he could feel that Superman was fighting the mind control.

Just imagining Batman tanking hits from Superman like that while in an evil state is a bit intense. The Batman Who Laughs is an interesting villain, although I’d need to see more out of him before saying if he is really good or not. He is absolutely crazy without a doubt but that doesn’t automatically mean he is a great character. This guy basically destroyed the multiverse but doesn’t seem to have any goals beyond just trolling. Trolling is in itself fun though so maybe that works, again we just have to see how it goes and I can tell that this is the kind of story that won’t be moving too much.

I played through the first 8 chapters before putting the game down. I don’t actually know how many chapters there are but it seemed like a good batch before writing the review. First up I can say the amount of content that the game has is very impressive. There are at least 10 different modes including story, PVP, missions, guild content, etc. You have a lot going on here and there aren’t really any advertisements. There are constant places asking you to buy items with real currency but you can largely ignore those. The HUD is rather jam packed so it can be tough to maneuver around at first though.

I can always appreciate when a game launches with a lot of content so that was nice to see. It can really make the difference in a title like this. There are about 30 playable characters so far, I unlocked about 8. My best fighter was Black Adam whose attacks are super handy. The gameplay is your standard auto based combat system where the heroes attack on their own and you just click on the supers when ready. You can put that on auto too though and speed everything 2X. I did that since there isn’t much reason to assume direct control most of the time.

The problem is the heavy focus on building. You’re building different parts of the bat cave, new homes, different facilities, etc. Each one takes between 20 seconds to 3 minutes for the opening levels and you can spend in game currency to shorten it but you know that it’s ultimately a trick to waste your resources in the early game. I built and upgraded over 50 things before I stopped and I can tell you that it is repetitive. You can only build one thing at a time unless you spend real money and this needed a quality of life update badly. Something to really make the whole experience smoother. There is just too much clicking over and over again.

If you really like building then you will love this game. Otherwise I don’t see the combat being important enough to keep you interested. The gameplay style could stand to be a lot more interesting since as it stands every character is pretty interchangeable. It also takes too long to get to the point of things as the tutorial itself takes around 1-2 hours to complete. It’s not even like the concepts are that hard, the game just explains things very slowly.

Overall, I like the direction the game is going in and it does look to be an interesting playthrough. It’s just going with the classic drip feed approach and you will need to be committed to the game for a very long time in order to pull this off. To me the game just isn’t interesting enough for that. That’s the nature of mobile games though. Put it this way, with an actual ending and if this was a console game I would play it through to the end. The game itself is good but when it comes to mobile you really have to pick and choose your battles since they are basically endless until the servers give way. So I’ll be curious to see how many people stick with this one but for me at least? This was the end of the road.

Poppy Playtime Triple Pack Review


I’m sure everybody here has heard of Poppy’s Playtime. Well, the name may not have an s in it, but that’s the way I’m used to saying it. This thing was aiming to be the next Five Nights at Freddy’s or Bendy. The horror and scares were going to be next level and now I finally get to play it as a triple pack. It’s definitely a solid title with a lot of scares the whole time. The lore may ultimately start getting a bit try hard edgy near the end but ultimately this is an experience you will not forget.

The game starts with the main character inside the ominous Poppy’s Playground. The game is in first person so we never see the main character. I suspect that he is one of the animatronics to be honest or a zombie since he might be dead but either way there are a lot of theories you can go with. I’m sure the fans who listened to every tape and 100% completed every chapter will have a better idea of this though. Either way you now have to try and get out of here but to do so you will have to find a way past these vicious monsters.

The first part mainly has you trying to escape Huggy Wuggy. Part of the fun in playing a collection like this is that you get to see the subtle gameplay shifts as you go on. This one is the simplest as you are basically walking around and interacting with objects. There are no special abilities or anything like that. You have to make sure and run fast too because one hug from this villain and it’s curtains for you. We don’t learn much about any of the characters or lore yet but this is just the beginning. For this reason the first part is the most ominous and I dare say that it is the scariest. You just don’t forget a title that has such an intense climax. Neither following part could match the sheer intensity of this one.

In the second part, we start getting a bit more technical with the puzzles. At one point you gain a new hand which helps with that. You are interacting with less random objects and now it’s more about specific puzzles. You are tested with a lot of new minigames to conquer by the Mother who is the main villain this time around. We start getting more lore here as well thanks to Poppy herself. Definitely not a character I would trust but then again I suppose I wouldn’t trust any character in this game. Being locked in a horror environment like this would just give me trust issues I have to admit.

The increase in platforming works well and in terms of pure gameplay I would say this one has the best mixture out of the 3 parts. It does well in keeping the main horror gameplay while also putting in a bit of that platformer kind of energy. The main hub world is also quite large with all the different areas to go through. The climax is also pretty intense and we have our full plot by this point. The Prototype is out there trying to murder us all.

In the third part the game goes even more ambitious as we enter full platformer territory. The puzzles are the largest yet as you run from room to room to deal with each impending threat. The hub world is also the biggest by far, the game is the most difficult as well with some really tricky segments as well. You even get a flare gun in this part which may be pushing the envelope a bit since a game is inherently less scary the instant you get a weapon. There are a lot of scares still for sure but slowly you’re more worried about the other creatures running around as they get picked off instead of being worried for yourself. There are still a lot of close calls though and I’d find myself flinching in every game. Even when you know that the monster is coming, you just can’t help but get terrified.

Each game has a really solid cliffhanger which is nice since it absolutely gets you ready for the next big adventure. I’m eager to see what happens in part 4 now and the main character does seem to get closer and closer to getting out of this place. Once he has escaped then things will really be looking up for him but it doesn’t seem like the kind of game where there will be a happy ending. Something tells me that the main character is going to be absolutely cooked here. He just needs to make sure that he doesn’t go alone and at least takes most of the monsters with him.

As with most of these big horror games the more of the lore you know, the less you want to know. I would say the best thing to do with these games is to not really explain anything. Just let me try to escape the monsters while getting some evil speeches and such. Keep it all shrouded in mystery because inevitably it involves a bunch of kids dying and gets all so tragic. At least based on how this game is going, you’re rooting for the monsters to wipe out humanity because all the people here seem super evil. At least all of the grownups I should say since they are constantly pulling off crazy experiments. No mercy or escape here.

The graphics are solid as it really feels like a horror title through and through. It’s part of what makes all of the jump scares work. Additionally the sound effects and quick musical tracks really work well to that end. They even made a whole parody of a happy intro at the start of the second chapter which was really unexpected. The game definitely has a lot of effort put into it which I appreciate. I would have liked to keep the flashlight in part 3 as sometimes it could be a little hard to see but I also get how it would make the game a little less scary.

In terms of replay value there are trophies to get and they seem quite difficult. You have to beat parts 2 and 3 in a very fast time to get the Platinum. It basically means mastering each game which takes a lot of dedication. I see that a lot of people have pulled this off based on the trophy percentages so maybe it’s not as hard as it sounds. Maybe… but I have some doubts on this. Either way at some point I’ll try to improve my rank since I have a D in two of the parts.

Overall, Poppy’s Playtime is a game you won’t want to miss. It is definitely intense and disturbing at times so you have to make sure that you’re into horror titles but as long as you are then you should be having a good time here. There is a lot of exploring to do within the game and more details that you will pick up each time. The games go fast but as a trilogy there is a good amount of content to enjoy. I’m ready for that next bundle pack at some point.

Penny’s Big Breakaway Review


It’s time for a wholesome 3D platformer. Penny is a new IP so it’s always impressive to see one of those grow and become the next big thing. It seems like everyone liked this one quite a bit and I can confirm that it’s a good title. It’s the kind of game that is easy to jump into and there is plenty to do after the main campaign is over. There’s no reason to leave this title on the shelf, just play through it and you will see what all the hype is about.

The general plot involves Penny heading to the Gala but unfortunately she ends up messing with the big political figure by mistake. I think he’s the mayor but now he wants her taken down. She must run fast, taking down every boss in her way as well as the proper authorities until she can get back into the gala and clear her name. Does Penny have what it takes to pull this off or is she about to be in for a very rude awakening?

Fortunately Penny is very skilled with a Yo-Yo. The general gameplay is all built around this as you use it to leap over obstacles, directly smash enemies, etc. It’s a fun way to make the gameplay a little different than just being your average 3D title. The game also moves at a pretty fast pace so you are really encouraged to learn the movement options well so that you can keep going at full speeds. The game isn’t all that hard but the real difficulty comes in trying to beat the levels as fast as possible to get the max ranks. I didn’t get a single max rank during my playthrough so it seems like this is definitely something you would need a good amount of practice for.

Additionally each level has several people asking you for help and I can only imagine that they will probably reward you with trophies for completing all of these. The main campaign is probably around 6-7 hours so throw in the bonus content and you’ve got a decent amount of things to do in order to really keep you busy here. You’ll really get to have tested your platforming skills by the end of it. There are also a lot of fun quality of life features here like a game over allowing you to continue but you lose all of your points. So if you actually want a high rank then you better prepare to play the level again while not dying so often.

Once you know the route to go for the goal you shouldn’t have a problem but sometimes it does take a bit of trial and error. Later on you also get invisible platforms so by that point in the game you really want to have mastered how far you can jump. Knowing the different distances by heart will really go a long way here. Without that then you may be in trouble but that’s why you have the option to keep on trying until you have succeeded.

Meanwhile the bright artstyle and graphics works really well here. Each world is distinct and you can tell that a whole lot of effort was put into the game. It’s all very polished and likewise the soundtrack is also super good. There are a lot of really catchy themes here and the soundtrack has a lot of variety to it. No two worlds sound the same at all. The technical elements here are all definitely on point.

The only part that can be confusing at times are the boss battles. It’s not always readily apparent what you have to do. Yes you have the trial and error but sometimes the game could stand to be a little clearer. The main example of this is the big boss where you have to use a magnet to attack him. Dodging his attacks was really hard to understand because of the odd hitboxes and the magnet’s range seemed a bit off.

All small things at the end of the day though. The gameplay itself is definitely a total win either way and I would definitely say that the sequels should stick to this kind of game design. Keep things fast to differentiate from other platformers and that momentum can easily be used to keep this title near the top of its genre. They can also start expanding the main cast a bit. It’s something that is good to begin doing sooner than later so the characters all have time to become fan favorites and everything. There are already some named characters here but none that strike you as the playable type. They seem like supporting characters, not main characters. At least that’s the way I would explain it.

Overall, Penny’s Big Breakthrough is a fun game. It’s fast paced and clever with the various mechanics. It looks and sounds good as well so you’ve really got the complete package here. There’s definitely a lot to take in and there is good room for a sequel. I’d definitely be interested in playing a follow up so lets keep our fingers crossed for that. In the meantime pick this game up and it’s the kind of title that you can really recommend to anyone. A simple but effective title that has no real issues.

Yoshi’s Island DS Review


Yoshi’s Island is one of those games that I would have imagined that I’d have played years ago but it always fell through the cracks. As a result it feels really retro to be playing this one because it’s just from such a different time. This was back when Nintendo really did not hold back on the difficulty. Some of these levels are really quite hard but never in an unfair way. Your platforming skills will simply be tested in ways that you wouldn’t have thought possible.

The story is fairly basic but with one little twist that was nice. Basically babies around the world are being kidnapped and this includes poor Luigi. Fortunately the stork is able to save Mario and quickly locates Yoshi so that they can team up to save the world once again. These two are no strangers to mixing it up with the likes of Bowser and so they quickly get ready for this. What they don’t realize is that King Bowser has come from the future as well to really complicate matters. Dealing with two fierce opponents may be a bit much and then we have Wario as a wild card.

Right off the bat I can appreciate the wide character roster here. At least for a Platformer this feels pretty big. You can use Baby Mario, Peach, Wario, DK, and even Bowser at one point. Each character has their own special abilities while riding on Yoshi and this even affects your running speed. Additionally Mario has the ability to grow his cape while using a power star and you temporarily control him instead of Yoshi. It’s clear that Nintendo was really working hard to ensure there was a whole lot of depth to the gameplay. It’s certainly doing more than the original.

That said, more isn’t always better. How much you enjoy this game will really come down to how much you like playing as all of the characters. If for any reason you do not like playing as them, then you will probably miss the standard Yoshi gameplay. As its core the gameplay still has many of the same elements like running through the levels and getting past all the obstacles but then you use the character specific items like DK’s climbing to get past different barriers in the level.

I mostly stuck with Mario as his basic gameplay is the most comforting but the game does force you to switch on many occasions. So get used to playing as everyone. Like I said before the difficulty is also quite high so don’t think that you will just be sleep walking through this adventure. No, you’re going to have to really put in a lot of effort. Stock up on as many lives as possible in the first few worlds. I nearly didn’t spend enough focus on that since I figured lives wouldn’t be important but the difficulty really spikes starting with world 4. I had around 65 lives by that point and ended up with less than 20 by the end.

There are a lot of check points in the game which is good but some of the jumps and timings are really intense. It’s fun to see how creatively Nintendo added this difficulty while preserving the basic concept of Yoshi not having a health bar. You die if you fall through a pit, touch lava, or let your baby get away from you for a long period of time. The latter is the easiest way to die so just be careful where you’re at when you take damage.

For the most part the bosses are all really easy though as even the final boss moves fairly slow and only has a few different attacks. I suspect that it is harder to balance a boss than it is for a level which explains the huge disparity between them. So at least that’s one part you don’t have to worry about, for the most part you will be blowing the bosses away with ease. For the levels, you just have to keep going at them over and over again until you’ve found a way to win. Over 90% of the challenging parts are just about execution though so you don’t have to worry about solving puzzles or anything like that. Just put your best foot forward and you’ll be fine.

The graphics are pretty solid here. Again it has a very nostalgic kind of vibe to it with the looks and designs really being classic Mario all the way. It’s an easy game to enjoy visually and the soundtrack is also good. A solid array of themes even if I can’t point to any one theme and say that it’s an all star. They all work well within the context that they appear in which is good enough for me. Nintendo typically always does a good job on that front so I’m not surprised.

There is also a formidable amount of replay value here. The main campaign is fairly long with 5 worlds of 8 levels each but then each world has 3-4 bonus levels as well. Then you have the collectibles and there are a ton of those to grab in each level. We’re talking massive Yoshi coins as well as red coins. It will take a very long time to achieve all of those so that will add more than a few hours to your total docket.

Overall, This is a very complete Yoshi game. It holds its own with the classic Mario titles although I will always prefer the Mario gameplay over Yoshi overall. Nothing wrong with Yoshi’s but Mario’s tends to be more fast paced. Here you do often have to wait for things to get set up. The worst are the auto scroller levels but that is true for any platformer title since the movement is so slow. You should definitely check this game out if you are looking for a good challenge. I can definitely guarantee that you will find one here. It’s the kind of game that you really can’t underestimate.
