Mega Man II Review


It’s time for the return of Mega Man! This is my favorite out of the Game Boy titles. It has the perfect balance of difficulty where you don’t have to be absolutely perfect when playing. Granted, it’s still really tough so you should expect to lose quite a lot but this time you actually feel like you always have a chance. That’s not something that you can say for some of the other games. Already that’s a pretty good jump. The rest of the game is pretty similar to the others so by this point you either like Mega Man or you’re tired of him.

The basic plot is that Wily is causing some trouble so Dr. Light is forced to call in the world’s #1 defender, Mega Man. Mega Man is one of those heroes of legend who never backs down and is always ready to fight off his opponents. Unfortunately he didn’t keep the powers of the villains from the first game so he is back to his mega buster. That might be for the best though since for the most part the other powers aren’t that handy anyway. Perhaps when you’re an expert player who has optimized everything but otherwise the mega buster is always good for me. It’s basically ole reliable and is always around when I’m in a pinch.

Naturally like the first game the graphics aren’t great here. The green still absolutely destroys all of the art that the game is trying to pull out. It’s too bad they couldn’t filter the green somehow. It’s just not the best look for any game. The soundtrack is okay but again there aren’t really any tunes to write home about. As for the game’s length, it’s still fairly short. You have around 4 main intro bosses, the Wily fight, then 4 more bosses and then the climax. Each stage is fairly quick so the length will come about based on how often you die. Even though the game is easier than the first, I would still expect a lot of deaths which would definitely be extending the play time. Some of the jumps are just tricky or enemies are in a spot where you will end up crashing to your doom if you end up fighting them.

Try to grab any energy tanks that you can. They come in real handy because you can use them in the middle of a level or boss to replenish your health all the way to the top. It’s incredibly handy at all times. Usually they are in tough places to get of course but the journey for them is definitely worth it. I was certainly glad to have them. Also, don’t forget that you have the various Rush techniques at your disposal. This came in a lot of handy this time around and I think in some sections they were even mandatory. It took me a little while to figure out because I wasn’t used to opening the weapons screen since I was using the mega buster for everything.

As always I do recommend using the mega buster for pretty much everything though. Trust me, it will get the job done and it also forces you to move around a lot and get used to the stage. Unless you are absolutely sure which weapon is the most is the most effective then this is definitely something you should consider. It can also be hard to tell which weapon is the counter in these old games. A lot of the time the one you figure is correct ends up not doing any damage or being useful at all.

The game follows the same format as the other Game Boy titles with 4 bosses, then Wily, then 4 bosses, then climax. So you’ll be speeding through the game even with all of the deaths. I do recommend checking it out if you have the Switch Online though. No real downside even if it is over very quickly. It’s a fun game through and through so at the end of the day that’s the important thing.

Overall, Mega Man II is another fun game. I tend to prefer the other parts of the franchise more than the classic Mega Man series but it’s still consistently good. It really does help you hammer in the fundamentals of movement and how to get around obstacles. If you get lazy about this then you are going to absolutely get dominated when it counts. You have to always be shooting while managing to keep a good amount of space between you and the boss. If you get close then you are at a disadvantage because the boss will keep on bumping into you and taking out chunks of your health at a time. You have to prevent that from happening no matter what. Then if you pull it off, you get the satisfaction of knowing that you ended up saving the world.

Mega Man: Dr. Wily’s Revenge Review


It’s time for a Mega Man marathon thanks to the Nintendo Switch Online. These game boy titles may appear at first glance to be straight remakes of the original games but that isn’t the case. Instead they are merged hybrids of sorts with a new villain thrown into the mix. It’s a pretty good time although the games do feel a bit compact so you will be done with them quickly. The sheer difficulty in some of these is so intense that I wonder how people pulled this off back in the day.

The game starts with Wily up to his old tricks so Dr. Light is forced to call in the legendary Mega Man to take down the evil robot masters. Mega Man is one of the strongest robots out there but beating up on his fellow robots isn’t exactly the guy’s idea of a good time. Still, he will do what he has too, because that is the role of a true hero. Mega Man is not one to shirk his responsibilities after all and will do whatever he can in order to achieve victory.

The gameplay is your classic 2D shooter style. You have your mega buster and you jump past obstacles and enemies. In most cases it’s best to beat the minions as they come along because otherwise they will really make you feel the pain. Trust me, they definitely don’t hold back. One wrong hit and you’ll find yourself falling off the platform and being defeated. That or you’ll just lose because you are out of health points. To be honest, either outcome is definitely a real possibility here.

I died numerous times while playing this one. It has to be one of the hardest Mega Man games that I’ve played. You have to be near frame perfect to get past some of these obstacles. I had to use the rewind feature quite a lot because they were just too tricky. The bosses are also really difficult particularly since they don’t always move the same way. For example, lets say I lose to a low attack that I needed to jump over. When I rewind and jump, the boss goes for an aerial attack instead. It’s definitely something that makes this title even harder.

To all of the players who actually pulled this off back in the day though, more power to you. That’s definitely not an easy feat by any stretch of the imagination. It is still a fun game though. You really get to test your reaction times and fundamental skills. You may not always come out on top but that’s okay. I do have a pet peeve as far as the gameplay is concerned though. The bosses appear to be immune to all of the special weapons except their specific weakness. That feels like a shame because it removes the point of having them to a large extent. Even if they only do as much damage as a mega buster, all weapons should work.

This is something that I’m glad they changed for future games. I always liked switching up the weapons but figuring out which one would work ended up being too tedious at times so what I would just do is use the mega buster for everyone. It’s a really well balanced weapon so either way I would say that it worked pretty well. I just would have liked to have had more of a choice.

The soundtrack is not bad. Not really any boppers that you’ll be looking up on Youtube though. They tend to blend together and will be forgotten rather quickly. The graphics also don’t get a chance to show out since the whole thing is covered in green. So it doesn’t age nearly as well as it should have otherwise. Turning any game into a single color is usually going to be a recipe for disaster.

In the end, this may be a short game but the sheer difficulty will help to extend the replay time. The boss battles are all extremely difficult and the same goes for the stages. When you complete this game you will really feel like a champion. While it’s on the Switch Online you should give it a shot and see just how far the series has come. We desperately need more Mega Man games in the present but for some reason Capcom has been fumbling the bag on that for a very long time.

Asura’s Wrath Review


It’s time to check out the classic known as Asura’s Wrath. I remember that this game always looked super hype when I would see the cover around or even any bits of the gameplay. The feats and characters were all very over the top which worked really well. Ultimately the game may not have done as well as it should have but I would definitely say that for me it did live up to the hype.

The game starts off by introducing us to the various gods who fight corrupted monsters that plague humanity. It appears to be a just cause and Asura does his best to make the world a safer place. Unfortunately he is framed for murdering the emperor one day and his wife is murdered while his daughter is kidnapped. The gods intend to use Asura’s daughter to power their army for eternity until the monsters have been vanquished and this is not an acceptable proposition for Asura. So he decides to take matters into his own hands and destroy all of them. Does he have the power to pull this off though?

While Asura is super powerful, the same is true for the rest of the fighters. In fact, Asura is put at a real disadvantage here because he is destroyed and doesn’t return for 12,000 years. So his skills have not improved while everyone else has ascended to a higher level. The game definitely has bigger time skips than you would expect for any title so it really uses their immortality to the story’s advantage. The gods also appear to be robotic in nature which you could make a lot of fun theories about to be sure. This doesn’t stop them from gaining new power through the energy system known as mantra though. The reason they need Asura’s daughter is that her prayers allow them to focus their powers. She basically improves their abilities on a continuous basis although obviously this isn’t a great setup for her which is why Asura wants to step in.

Some of these fighters try to at least act noble like they’re doing this for a good cause while other members just embrace that they’re being evil and do their best to be massive jerks. You are absolutely rooting for Asura the whole time because all of the other characters just seem crazy. They’re taking the concept of murdering a few to save many to a very huge extreme. For example we learn that they ended up murdering trillions to absorb their life forces to create a robot that can destroy the evil monsters once and for all. The idea is that if they do this then they can create a perfect utopia for eternity.

Fast forward long enough and even trillions of deaths will seem like a small number. Of course you can see how this is still rather insane and a few of the enemies show their true colors when they laugh about how humans exist to serve them anyway so this isn’t a big deal. Yeah Asura really needed to wipe the system clean. In a way he feels like the Hulk or Doomsday here. He is constantly unlocking new abilities and getting stronger as he gets angrier. When he is defeated he just regroups and comes on back. His anger is so high that even death cannot hold him for very long. It’s a really cool premise.

The game goes all in on the aesthetic here too which is what makes the whole game possible. You’re seeing the characters shatter ships the size of planets and moving at incredible speeds. The feats are all crazy here and the characters act like this is completely normal. That’s because it is normal in this context which is what’s so impressive. Then you’ve got the soundtrack which is really good. I liked just about all of the themes here. They’re all really epic and definitely get you hyped for the fights that come up.

It should come as no surprise that the graphics are also really good. The character models are really on point and the energy effects are all really good. This is a game that you can seamlessly play on the PS5 and admire just how solid it looks. Everything about the game was very carefully crafted with no issues at all. Now that’s not to say that the game is literally perfect. It is true that the game could definitely stand to be longer. There are 18 chapters in the game and each one is fairly short. More than a few only have around 5-7 minutes of gameplay while the rest are cutscenes. So you breeze through the game very quickly.

I enjoyed the gameplay a lot so it would have been fun to have gotten to play some more. I was really enjoying how the fights let you play around with the counter attack/quick time action features and of course there was a lot of fun to be had in just bashing the enemies with your standard attacks. The battles ending when you unlocked your rage mode was also a pretty cool approach. The game had a fun gimmick there that was original without being annoying or anything like that.

In the end a lot of the hype around this game is also thanks to the story being so good. It’s a really compelling story that just drags you in and you’re always at the edge of your seat. It’s a shame that some of the chapters are hidden behind DLC since that would help with the length issue but the ending is really intense. Definitely one of those cliffhangers that you are unlikely to forget. Having to replay the whole last level to see the extra cutscene you unlock is a bit much but like I said, the levels are short so it wasn’t all that bad.

Overall, Asura’s Wrath is an elite game to be sure. The gameplay is really out of this world and the quick time events are so much fun. They definitely take up most of the game so it ends up being like an interactive movie at times but when the story is this good you don’t need anything else. I highly recommend checking this game out. It really is a very unique experience and you aren’t likely to forget it anytime soon. Hopefully one day it is old enough to be nostalgic and we get a full blown sequel.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Review


After all these years I have now gone ahead and bought the latest Marvel vs Capcom title. I feel like it never quite had the lasting power of MVC2 or 3 but it’s still a great fighting game with a bunch of characters. I also do appreciate that it has a full legitimate story beyond just intros and endings in arcade mode. So that gives it some points and at the end of the day it’s the kind of game that you can play with friends for hours.

The story starts off midway through. Marvel and Capcom’s universes have merged and it’s been 3 months since then. The heroes are trying to fight off Ultra Sigma from taking over all of the worlds and they are down to their last lines of defense. In order to win they are going to need all of the Infinity Stones. Obtaining them will not be easy though and they might even have to turn to a dangerous villain for aid.

It’s a fairly basic story but it gets the job done. My only real problem with it is that it starts 3 months later so everyone’s already friends so we missed all of the meetups. I feel like that takes a lot of the punch out of a crossover like this. It’s an okay story but I feel like just about anyone could easily write a more interesting one. It just plays things too safe and there is also no power level consistency here. You will see Chris Redfield overpowering Ultron droids and throwing them around yet I’m supposed to believe that Mega Man X and Hulk were losing ground against these guys? Nahhhhhhhhhhhh, but if you ignore all of the power levels and such at least you get to see your favorite characters winning and everything.

The gameplay is a classic 2 on 2 style. Gone are the days of 3 vs 3 but the gameplay is fairly polished. You also have the Infinity Stones in play which give extra powers and abilities. For the most part I’d say they’re kinda pointless but I guess they wanted to tie them in somehow. You have your auto combos in the game as well as a lot of more advanced ones that you would have to do by hand. Those would definitely be more effective but they take longer to master so that’s a very fair ratio.

While the artstyle isn’t the best, the graphics are still really solid. It’s great seeing the updated character models for everyone and the backgrounds as good. I also liked one cutscene in particular where we actually saw all of the characters fighting it out with Ultron. I think they spent most of the budget on that one but it was definitely cool. The soundtrack is a little more on the generic side. I didn’t notice any tunes that really caught my eye but I suppose that I definitely didn’t get to play on every stage.

In terms of replay value there is naturally a ton here. Aside from completing the story you can do arcade mode, play endless vs battles and of course aim for the Platinum. The trophies look like they would be rather difficult to obtain so that would last you a long while. Also in general it just goes without saying that fighting games are endless for replay value so long as the gameplay itself is good. Fortunately that very much is the case so there are really no issues there.

The story mode itself is shockingly easy for just about the whole game until the final boss. Suddenly the difficulty cranks up to 11. It’s a bit jarring at first because you get used to playing in a very sloppy fashion. Endless auto combos and everything but then suddenly you have to actually fight for real. It makes things interesting though so I appreciate that. It actually took me like 4-5 tries to take the guy down because he kept knocking me out before I could get the health all the way down. Even my very last attempt came down to the wire. So definitely don’t underestimate that boss.

In general it shows how rusty I am with this gameplay style though. There was once a time where I would have effortlessly solo’d the boss and now look at me? Barely scraping by when it counts. That was definitely an eye opener and ironically I do better against actual players since they won’t block my random supers the way that an A.I. does. I think they should code in the ability for a computer to fall for a random strategy every once in a while don’t you think?

There’s not a whole lot more to say about this one since it is fairly basic. I guess as a mild negative in a sense, I just think they could have done a bit more for this one. It almost feels in some ways like a smaller budget MVC title than you would expect from something on a PS4 console. Whether it’s making a longer story mode or inflating the character count a bit, you can tell that it doesn’t have quite the same level of effort as something like Super Smash Bros. Few things do of course but I felt like this game in particular really stood out. Like it could have been amazing if it tried just a little harder instead of being great.

Overall, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite is a great game. At the end of the day it’s a nice, fast paced 2D fighter with a good character roster. It’s not as ambitious as it could have been and might end up falling short compared to some of its competition in the modern fighting game arena but you’re bound to have a lot of fun here. Having a full story mode should be the norm nowadays so I hope they keep that up. If you have time for a good fighting game to dive into, then I definitely recommend jumping into this one.

Mega Man World 5 Review


It’s time for a quick Mega Man manga oneshot. It’s always nice to see a game get a quick adventure like this and I think all games should try for this. It’s a great way to get people hyped to play the game even if the intended effect is likely not to be found out like 20 years after the fact. Regardless the art is on point and we get some good action scenes so I’m definitely on board with this adventure.

The manga starts off with Mega Man getting some upgrades. They come at a good time because the heroes learn about a bunch of robots causing carnage over in town. They are led by a robot who calls himself….Earth. Earth wants to unveil a new era with robots at the top and so Mega Man has to try and stop him along with the other planetary robots. These may be some of the strongest opponents that Mega Man has ever come up against so he can’t afford to hold back here but will even his best be enough against such dangerous fighters? Only time will tell.

The manga ends early so that the incentive is for you to play the game to see how it all ends. It’s basically a built in cliffhanger and I would say it works well. Earth wipes the floor with Mega Man and prepares for the rematch which is where you as the player should go and buy the game to see what happens. I already love cliffhangers so this really hit the spot for me. It’s just a good way to go about it.

This also means that the rest of the chapter is basically a bunch of nonstop fight scenes and if you know me you know that I really don’t mind that. Just give me as much action as possible. Sure it’d be cool if the fights could be longer but you get a lot of variety here with Mega Man crushing everyone who dares get near him. He’s basically opening a clinic at that point on how to shred through the robots. They all get a tough line or two before being destroyed.

I don’t even remember some of these robots too well which shows that I probably need to brush up on my Mega Man knowledge a bit. At this point there are so many robots that it’s hard to remember them all but I definitely try. The fact that they are all named after planets definitely makes it a bit easier to recall at least now that I’ve read through the manga. I also didn’t remember this new cat sidekick that Mega Man has instead of Rush. Naturally I miss Rush but the cat honestly did a pretty decent job here. He came in clutch for one moment which was pretty good.

The artwork here is on point and very smooth. I don’t know which artist did this one, if it’s someone who did a bunch of others or only worked on this oneshot but he seemed to be very experienced. All of the characters are drawn on model and the fight scenes are very clear. The writing is good as well so this is a very complete story. Of course that does mean there’s not a whole lot to say here since it’s really just one chapter with a lot of fighting but all you need to know is that it’s worth checking out.

Even if just to see how Mega Man methodically takes everyone down. He’s always been a very efficient fighter and I think we’d see more of that if we got some more Mega Man games with actual cutscenes. It’s easy to forget but he’s not quite as compassionate or emotional as X. Mega Man will blow up any robot master in his way because he knows that they will continue to cause a ton of trouble if left unchecked. He will let Light and friends worry about what happens afterwards but his job is to stop the villains and he does it really well.

Overall, Mega Man World 5 is a solid title. You’ll be finishing it in the blink of an eye but the title has no flaws. The art is on point, the characters are solid, and it’s basically got everything you could want in this story. Trust me when I say that Mega Man is absolutely the manga you want to be reading right now. It also reminds me of why we need a true Mega Man ongoing. Mega Man San is tiding us over for now but that’s still more of a mini manga with how short the chapters are. I need a full blown one and that’ll be amazing. Until then you should read this story for a good idea of the kind of action you could expect from such a tale.

Megaman ZX Advent Review


This is one of those manga titles that is just so tragic on every level. It’s got solid art and it’s based on a game that should be a lot of fun. Just give me a straight to business manga where the heroes are fighting off the mavericks. It’s not that complicated…and yet the series goes straight to being a gag manga like the Zero title. It only gets serious for the final two chapters and of course by then it’s over anyway so there’s not even much of a point by then. It’s a true shame….feels bad man. Feels….baddddddddd.

So the manga starts with Ashe on one of her treasure hunts when she bumps into a little kid named Grey. He has the ability to bio merge with the model robots that are nearby and so he can become Megaman. Ashe figures that will be handy in her hunts and so she recruits him to the team. Grey is happy to help since he just loves to mess around. Their mission is officially to grab Model Ws which can be used to help resolve the energy shortage on the planet but Ashe just wants to be rich so that’s her main priority. Will she be able to get rich in 10 chapters?

Every chapter has a different maverick show up to cause some trouble and take names. The heroes pack them up and go on their way. The chapters are fairly short so it’s easy to go along with the formula approach but it’s just not a great formula. So you’ve got Ashe, Grey and Model A running around all the time. Model A’s whole character is that he’s a perv and that’s even how he is introduced in each chapter’s cover page. Man that’s a sad reputation to have. The manga seems aimed fairly young so at least his antics don’t get too crazy but he still tries to cop a feel and such which is just disgraceful for a Mega Man character.

Model A is just awful the whole time. Then I don’t get why this series decided to not have Ashe be a fighter. Basically she can’t fight at all and I don’t know what she would have been doing before Grey showed up. Evidently she’s been in the group for a while so did her hand gun actually prove to be all that she needed? This is even worse when we find out in the very last chapter that she also has the ability to merge into Mega Man but didn’t realize that because she always had to keep her distance from Model A since he was so suspect.

I don’t blame her for not wanting to merge with him but it’s all just such a forced way to keep her out of the battlefield. If you were going to make her a noncombatant anyway then just don’t even put her in that arena. Have her stay as a support/treasure hunter right through to the end. Otherwise it’s just a tease the whole time. Even with that she still manages to be the best out of the trio.

For Grey, he’s just too young. The kid is always messing around and never gets serious. I suspect that he really doesn’t even understand the true gravity of the stakes right now. Not like there’s much danger since he can dominate any opponent anyway but they should have made him a little older. That would have done a world of good for the character if you ask me.

Aside from the main 3, you have the robot for each chapter but of course they’re dead almost as soon as they appear so they don’t get a lot of character. For example Buckfire is up first and before he can sizzle the characters then he is vanquished. The water type is blown up before she can even be introduced. Rospark at least gets to have her main trait as a flirt but is still taken out without mercy. The most tragic one might be Vulturon because the poor guy was just trying to play his music but he was doing better than Ashe so she declared that he had to die.

The scene is played as a gag as they murder the poor guy but when you actually think about it, he hadn’t really done anything wrong yet. Sure, as a maverick he probably would have done something soon and in most games the villains are basically shoot on sight but with how the robot reacted you couldn’t help but feel bad for him. He really didn’t think he had done anything to deserve being completely destroyed and I can’t really argue against that.

Albert was the big villain in the game so you’re probably waiting for him to turn evil here but that barely happens. He’s the comic relief scientist for most of the chapters as he tries to use the W energy for good each time but it tends to backfire in his face. He has Ashe and Grey babysit his kids at one point as well. The only time they get to fight him is when the W energy takes him over and they beat him up real fast. Then he’s back to being comic relief again. Such is the fate of Albert in this continuity.

Interestingly in the final 2 chapters it’s like a whole completely different series just like with Megaman Zero. Suddenly Albert is evil and shady and there is a whole new group of villains. You have Prometheus and Pandora talking about how the great Megaman war is approaching as all the Megaman are gathering across the planet. We see characters like Vent and Aile, Omega, the 4 guardians from the Zero games, Grey and Ashe, and someone who looks like Copy X all show up. It’s a great premise for a series that’ll never come out.

Why have all the cool things at the very end when it won’t amount to anything? It always reminds me of what a wasted opportunity this would have been. There’s so much cool potential that you can do with this instead of the actual gag manga that we got. I suppose I’m glad that these two final chapters were added in at the end but this is really the tone and feel that the whole series should have had. It would have been so cool and I want to see those characters mix it up. There’s a lot of great lore here.

Another thing that holds the series back is that it’s not very funny. I can’t say I’m surprised as comedic manga tend to be funnier when they aren’t the gag types. Gag manga tend to rely more on crude humor and everyone being super exaggerated instead of acting like real characters. That’s what holds them back here. The crude humor isn’t excessive at least, it’s probably just a scene or two but the main humor like Grey having to mimic animals to transform just doesn’t land. You probably won’t crack a smile here.

The art being strong is definitely the best point of the series. That’s at least something that you can point to if you want something really good to say about the series. There just isn’t much of a sense of purpose to this title and since I liked the original ZX a lot, this felt like a real step down. As always I’m glad for more Megaman content but I’m not sure why the Zero and Zero related titles tend to become gag titles. Doesn’t feel like that would be the first thing you think of when it comes to Zero right?

Again I have to point to the final 2 chapters on what you’d want to see in a Megaman title like this. A Megaman war would be unbelievably awesome. Even if you don’t go and grab some of the ones from alternate timelines like EXE or Starforce, there is still a lot to love here. My money would be on Omega and Vent as the top big dogs in the arena for sure. They should be able to soundly crush all of the other Megas in attendance but the fights would all be awesome nonetheless. You shouldn’t waste someone who is really good at drawing action scenes on a series without much action.

Overall, Megaman ZX Advent is a series that you’ll probably finish very quickly. After all 10 chapters goes by in the blink of an eye especially when they’re short like this. It’s not good but if you really want to see some more Megaman action then you may as well go with it. At least if they ever do decide to bring this one back and adapt the Megaman war then you’ll have some context for it. That’s definitely the best case scenario by a mile and is the optimal way to think about it even if that’s a super long shot. It’s more likely to hope for an X Dive manga which would be pretty awesome to be fair.

Rockman.EXE Operate Shooting Star VS Review


It’s always fun to see Megaman EXE getting some more content. In this case it was in the form of a good ole oneshot. It’s also based on the real life game of Megaman Battle Network this time which is a different approach. I always like the game based titles like Beyblade so I think you could do a whole lot with this premise. In the end it was only a single chapter so in a way it’s over just as soon as it has begun but I had a good time with it. The art is solid and it shows why you need a balanced deck of battlechips.

The chapter starts with Raito playing in a battle against in friend. Unfortunately Raito gets absolutely crushed because he always just picks whatever chip he has on hand without actually thinking of a full plan or how to counter attack. This puts him in a rough place right from the jump. Still, it’s a friendly fight so there’s no harm. That is..until a grown up shows up and takes offense to Raito saying that he could eventually become the strongest. This guy wants to show that there is a big gap between kids and adults in the wide world of Megaman. Can Raito take him down or is it going to be game over for him?

It was intense to see this random adult show up to try and beat a kid at Battle Network. I mean it’s not that serious right? You’d expect the guy to just walk away but instead he really doubles down on how emotionally invested he is to the point where he even slugs Raito during the fight. Yes, there’s a point where he walks over and punches him before going back to the game. That was really crazy because of how random it was. I guess there’s not much that Raito could actually do to stop him though.

In the game Raito quickly learns how to use advanced combos as well as the new Star Force card and pulls through but considering that he was dueling like a beginner at first, it may be a turnaround that’s a little too quick for some. At the very least I feel like the other guy had a stronger strategy. His cards were also better with how he had the various navi chips at the ready. It’s hard to deal with those. I can’t say that I played too many multiplayer matches in Battle Network but with the way the gameplay is set up, having a lot of those navi chips is a must.

It was nostalgic to see the oneshot accurately show off the gameplay mechanics though. That’s definitely the right way to handle this if you’re not going to do a story about the actual characters. It was also neat seeing Star Force show up. I never ended up getting the crossover so I’m less familiar with the new mechanic but if you’re actually controlling two Megamen at once that sounds intense. Definitely opens up the door for a lot of new strategies. The Program Advance was also suitably powerful here and really did a number on the opponent.

Overall, there’s not a whole lot more to discuss because ultimately this is a quick adventure. It’s only around 30 pages or so and it’s a pretty straight forward duel. As this was to promote the crossover game I’d say they did a good job with it. I would be interested in playing the game after reading this. I’d like for more titles to get promotional manga like this, it helps really take you to the next level and of course I just want more Megaman content. If you’re looking for a fun little title to read then this is definitely the one to check out. It won’t take long to read and it just makes for a good time.

Megaman X3: Defeat the Doppler Army! Review


Time for another Megaman adventure. This time X is really put through the wringer as the situation gets a lot more personal. The story to X3 is really solid so I’d love a modern remake with full animation and cutscenes. That said, I want X9 even more so we can skip all of that if we can just get the games to continue. There’s so much more to do here!

The story starts really quickly as Zero calls Megaman and explains that everyone has gone maverick and the city is attacked. It really seems like every robot folds immediately to mind control in this universe. Well, Megaman heads over and is quickly betrayed by his old friend Mac. Zero destroys the guy and tells Megaman to keep his guard up at all times. It seems like the nice scientist who joined up recently (Doppler) may actually be a traitor but Megaman likes to think that he is just being manipulated.

Well, lets just say that he wasn’t at least based on this oneshot. There isn’t really time for that kind of twist right now at least. Still, Mac worked well as the opening traitor and while we only knew the guy for a page in this version, it showed how once again Megaman’s friends let him down. He took the Doppler part hard as well so Megaman even has to cry a bit here. It’s nothing new for the hero to get emotional. The one downside to having emotions in a world where nobody else does is that Megaman is often betrayed by everyone and there’s nobody he can really have help him out in this area.

Sure, Zero’s a great friend but as he admitted on multiple occasions, he doesn’t have emotions either so while he can try to console Megaman, it may not be very effective. It’s the thought that counts but in this version Zero doesn’t appear after he saved Megaman in the opening scene anyway. Vile gets to appear briefly which is fun although he’s called Vava for some reason. I assume that was just something up with the translation because I’ve never heard of that translation before.

It was cool to see him and I’d say this is what puts X3 above the other oneshot adaptions. This felt like more of an ensemble cast with the big characters like Zero and Vile showing up. The traitors helped to raise the stakes and make this personal for Megaman as well. So ultimately this was just a fun adventure and I don’t really have much negative to say about it. As always you’re lucky if you are the first robot master to appear. The ice fighters get a full battle here but most of the rest of the mavericks really don’t get more than one panel to them. Megaman even beats around 3 in a page which was impressive.

It makes sense so you can cover as much as possible though. Considering that we got to have Bit and his partner as well as their fused super form too, I would give the manga a lot of credit for including all of the key parts here. I would say that even without any prior context you can really keep up with the flow of what’s going on. You may not get some of the finer details on why everyone’s being mind controlled or being a traitor but that won’t stop you from enjoying the adventure.

Of course the art is pretty solid here as well. The character designs are on point and you can always feel a lot of action during the battles. The pages are easy to read through so you end up blasting through the whole thing right away. We also got the quick Dr. Light cameo and the classic power ups again. I feel like Megaman should just keep those upgrades on all the time but maybe they drain a lot of energy. It would at least spare him the effort of having to go and track them all down every time.

As a final note, I still enjoy Megaman’s confidence here. While he is usually known more for being dramatic and trying to talk every opponent down, Megaman can jump into action as needed. Due in part to the fast pacing of this manga adventure, Megaman usually jumps right into action. He’s shown to have good battle experience as he immediately figures out each maverick’s weakness and ends the fight quickly. So in a way, the fact that everything is sped up just makes him look even more impressive as a fighter.

Overall, Megaman X3 the oneshot reminds me that the game had a really fun story. It’s not a surprise as I did read the X3 full manga adaption not too long ago but it’s always nice to see it presented in different ways. The games really had complete stories and I can see why they were so well liked. We really need them to return at some point and that would be extremely hype. In the meantime, this is a oneshot I would definitely recommend checking out. At around 30 pages the size is good so you get to see all of the robot masters. We don’t cover the full game as there is a cliffhanger at the end but this way you can go and buy the video game to see how this really ends.

Megaman the Comic Review


This is a very short comic with only 4 pages so there isn’t much to say but I’ll quickly run you through what goes on here. It’s a classic origin story for Megaman as we see Dr. Light turn him into a fighting machine. The comic starts with them seeing on the news that many robots have been going crazy. Megaman is determined to put this right and quickly because he’s just a nice guy. Light figures that the only way this will work is to give Megaman a transformation from a peaceful robot into a combat one. The procedure is apparently quite painful and even seems to turn Megaman’s hair white (Although that could just be the electricity). Megaman has now been born and is ready to take down evil!

That’s about it. There’s only so much you can really do in a short amount of time like that. I appreciate seeing a look at Megaman’s origin but I absolutely think this should have been a few pages longer so we could have seen some action. Maybe have Megaman go up against a squad of powerful villains or something like that even if they’re just minions. It would put a nice cap on the adventure and really give you hope that Megaman could save us all. If you do that, then the adventure immediately becomes a lot more memorable and hype.

At least you can quickly get a feel for all of the characters’ personalities. Roll is shown to be very cautious so naturally she gets worried when Megaman decides to embark on this adventure. He may not make it back alive after all. You have Dr. Light who halfheartedly protests but has the equipment on hand so he turns Megaman into the hero right away. It didn’t feel like he was as reluctant as you’d expect. The danger was rapidly taking out the town so he made the hard calls here.

Finally you’ve got Megaman who will be taking all of the actual risks. He did well to volunteer for such a dangerous role right away. You can sense his heroic spirit here and it’s easy to see how he would end up becoming the ultimate champion of Earth. He was willing to take all of the risks and never looked back. Ultimately he would lead the land to an era of peace.

The art is good here. The character proportions are all right and it’s easy to follow along with what’s happening. The colors are vibrant and so I had no issues on that front. The writing/dialogue is also good so the comic really made the most of its 4 pages. It would work well as the pilot to a true ongoing but I think you could also make the origin a lot longer and that would be cool. There’s a lot to explore there.

Overall, This was a very short review but at only 4 pages I would have to really stretch things out to talk about it longer. It’s a fun little comic and I would definitely check it out if you’ve got a minute to spare. I’m always glad to see Megaman content of any kind. It feels like the franchise just hasn’t gotten a whole lot of attention lately outside of X Dive with regards to new content so I’d like to see Capcom step up there. At least the fans are quite dedicated and keep translating so many of the older works though. It all helps to keep the brand alive.

Megaman Star Force 3 Review


Megaman Starforce was always a fun part of the overall Megaman franchise so it’s a shame that it didn’t last longer. 3 games is nothing to sneeze at though so I guess that’ll have to do. This manga’s not a oneshot but with only two chapters it might as well be. This one ignores the events of the first manga (Probably for the best) and picks up the third game’s timeline assuming that the first two were done accurately. The artwork is excellent as expected and this really would have been a great ongoing if it had kept on. The start was really quite solid.

The manga starts with a flashforward as Megaman uses the Red Ace form to take out a powerful robot and he seems to have saved the world. We then cut to the present where digital viruses have become more frequent in their attack lately. This is because of the mysterious Meteor G which is approaching the Earth. A police officer named Shidou is concerned about this because right now the projections show this meteor destroying the whole planet when it lands. He doesn’t know of anyone who is powerful enough to stop it though. Meanwhile, Geo helps his classmates stop the viruses but he’s still concerned about this and wants to stop the threats quickly so he can go into space and find his father.

As you can imagine, the peace doesn’t last long. Geo is quickly attacked by Spade Magnet. Spade was once just a nice guy called Magnet, but the noise was attached to him by two mysterious villains so he went rogue. The noise quickly contaminates any fighter that it touches and battling a noise fighter can even corrupt you as well. That makes it particularly tough to fight against someone like this. If you reach the 100% noise level then that would be game over. The opening fight is definitely pretty solid. While it’s clear that Geo has the edge in his Megaman form, he has to try not hurting this guy too badly while also protecting his friends.

That makes the fight a little trickier but fortunately Shidou shows up and can transform into a super mode as well. That at least means that Geo doesn’t have to fight on his own which is huge here because being on your own is really a recipe for disaster in this kind of battle. The back and forth of fighting Spade while also resisting the noise makes for a good dynamic. By the end of the title Megaman is basically immune to noise which is good though. This is a solid dynamic for a fight or two but it would probably get old otherwise.

Spade was also a solid opening threat because he is definitely powerful enough to go toe to toe with these guys while not being crazy strong yet. Then in chapter 2 we get Jack who is significantly stronger. His battle with Megaman is epic and the lead would not have been able to claim victory here without surpassing his limits. Jack has a terrific design and I like his confidence. I feel like they are channeling a bit of Bly/Bass into this character with how he acts. Given that I’m a big fan of both of those characters, that bodes really well for Jack.

The 2 chapters open up a lot of intrigue and suspense with the villains in the shadows. We know there’s a whole villain group out there now. At the end the title says to read the game to find out what happens. The game was a blast but it’s too bad this couldn’t have adapted everything. Imagine a Star Force 3 full adaption with this artist? That’d be a wrap without a doubt. There’s just no way that it wouldn’t immediately be a top tier Megaman title. The artist has not lost his talent at all as the designs and action scenes here are fantastic. It makes reading the series a real pleasure.

Of course the characters are also solid. Geo makes for a solid main character who always gets down to business and wants to help out. The manga doesn’t overdo it with making him too timid or anything. He may have a hard time dealing with Luna but Geo doesn’t get too flustered or anything. He just keeps on going with his journey and that pays off. Luna’s a solid heroine too even if she is obsessed with Megaman. She reminds me of Black Cat who loved Spiderman but wanted nothing to do with Peter Parker. Luna isn’t mean to Geo or anything though so automatically she’s a much nicer character right from the start.

As for Shidou, I like this character. He may not have had a ton to do just yet, but he knows enough to trust Megaman right away and even ask for his help. I’m glad he didn’t go too far down the path of thinking that Megaman had to be destroyed. Mind you, just considering it for a moment still did hurt his character but it wasn’t anything that he couldn’t take back. As the title went on I’m sure he would have gotten better and better.

Overall, This is a really solid title. It’s basically a oneshot even if there are 2 chapters but it accomplishes a lot. If this is the kind of manga that is supposed to get you to play the game, well I’d say that it did a good job of it. I’d certainly be more interested in playing the game after reading this…if I didn’t already play it of course. If you haven’t checked this title out yet then you should change that. It’s a high quality action title and a look at what could have been if the Star Force series had just been a little more popular and kept on going. Either way I won’t soon forget this era. After the EXE part of the series, Star Force is definitely still my favorite one. X/Zero would be in third and then good ole Classic. ZX would be higher if we had more lore in there.
