Freedom Planet 2 Review

It’s time to take a look at the big sequel to the original Freedom Planet. It’s cool to see all of the characters again and they do a good job of keeping the story really hype and exciting. There’s full voice acting here and a fun story which goes a long way. I’ll definitely be up for another game to wrap up the trilogy at some point. There’s definitely more you can do with the world building here but if not I can still be content with the big adventure here.

The game kicks off with a new threat emerging into the world. Her name is Merga and she is a water dragon like Lilac. No longer is the heroine the last of her kind but Merga explains that there was no accident or anything like that. Their people were wiped out by the Earth Dragons and she intends to have her revenge on the planet. Lilac knows that she has to save the world but defeating Merga would ensure that she is the last of her kind once more. Is there any way to prevent this from being the case?

I tend to give platformers a lot of grief for not having much of a story but I can safely say that it isn’t a concern this time around. This game has quite a lot of story within it and full voice acting like I mentioned earlier. This goes a looooong way to making the game extra memorable. You’re really eager to see what is going on with the case and how they will handle this. The story has twists and turns, it has drama and action. It’s a complete narrative that really pushes the characters.

Lilac is a great heroine as always and this game really let us see her leadership qualities. While the rest of the characters would be fighting and getting in each other’s way, she wasn’t getting distracted. Ultimately you can count on Lilac to make the right calls as needed. Meanwhile Carol is fun as always. Her big focus on being a free spirit does often put the characters in a bad spot but she is a loyal friend through it all. Milla has improved a great deal from the first game. She is still one of the weaker characters for me but there is a lot of potential with her banter with Serpentine.

Neera is a whole lot of fun on the hero side as well. She’s all on business which makes for a lot of arguments. Neera wants to protect the world at any cost and that absolutely makes for a great for a great contrast. The Magister that she serves is far less impressive though. He could definitely stand to be a more likable character. He strikes me as that shady guy who makes a ton of mistakes and doesn’t always pay for them. I mainly found him annoying here.

One character who gets the shaft this time is Spade. He basically shows up to get wrecked and doesn’t contribute much. I can get why Lilac is still mad at the guy because he is the opposite of reliable. Always ready to make a quick escape and look out for himself instead of helping the rest of the heroes out. The guy isn’t even a hero to be honest. I’d consider Serpentine to be more dependable at this point.

Serpentine is a great character all the way though. He has the best theme in the game and is an unpredictable wild card. You want to talk about a guy with aura and great one liners? He is the absolute best character in the game and I always looked forward to his theme song playing. You knew that fun things were in store. A true scene stealer all the way.

As for the villains, the roster was pretty strong here. The best villain was Merga which makes sense. She had some strong ideals and made for a very compelling character. Obviously she is evil and the game doesn’t try to make you think anything else but I can always go for a villain who is at least fighting for something they believe in as opposed to just being totally random. Then you have Askal who is a strong fighter and gets a good role here. I may not have liked how it ended but he was another powerful villain who helped to even things out here.

Aaa is the only villain that I didn’t care for. He panics a lot and is super weak so I didn’t think that we actually needed him here. He doesn’t add anything to the dynamic which is my main problem. Captain Kalaw was fun though. He could maybe be a bit over the top but I tend to like this character type. Finally you have Cory, whose role is much smaller than you would expect but she is still really solid. Definitely another fighter you can’t underestimate although she definitely had less personal stakes for helping the villains out.

I didn’t really talk about the gameplay much yet but it’s basically a 2D platformer like Sonic. I think that’s probably oversimplifying it a little bit though. You can also use an aerial spin move that’s like a boost which makes you temporarily invincible. It’s a huge part of how the gameplay here works so you need to use it a lot. You can also use martial arts with your attack button. There are way more boss fights than the average 2D platformer so get ready for that combat.

The game can be reasonably difficult as well so make sure you buy some good items. I personally liked the water damage upgrade a lot since the damage sticks with the enemy even after you have finished landing your hits. It’s extremely useful without a doubt. The final boss has like 10+ forms also so I hope that you have managed to save up a lot of gems. You’re definitely going to need them for this part. I’m not always a huge fan of the speed based 2D titles but the level designs here were pretty good. I may have gotten lost once or twice since they can be rather large but it worked out well enough.

Then of course you have the soundtrack which is definitely top tier. A lot of great tunes around every corner in this game. We also can’t forget the graphics which are well above average. The game looks very well polished. They didn’t skimp out on any of the technical aspects here. I guess in a way I focused mostly on the story because I was so impressed but the whole game was on point here. There isn’t a ton of replay value to be honest though so I guess the only issue could be that there isn’t a ton of content here. Still, it’s not like the game goes for $60 or anything like that though so it evens out well enough.

Overall, Freedom Planet 2 was definitely a great game. It really went a long way to maximizing the hype and enjoyment that you would expect after the first game. The story was excellent and I had a good time with the gameplay. This is definitely a game that you should pick up as soon as possible. You definitely will not regret it, I can tell you that! Gotta see what the next Switch game to get with the Eshop gift cards will be. Always lots of fun options out there.

Bomberman Jetters Review

We’re back in the world of Bomberman with this next adventure. It’s pretty fun to finally be getting back into the swing of things as this series is always pretty good. Platforming with the bomb explosions is unique and you can’t really compare this to very many other titles. I would actually say this one even improves upon the last title because of various quality of life updates. Less missable collectibles/monsters this time around. In fact you’d have to try in order to actually miss any of the creatures. The collectibles can be a little more difficult though, I actually missed two of them and had to head back. Technically you don’t necessarily need every material but I didn’t know that until the end.

The basic plot is that the villains are causing a lot of trouble once again. This time they have powered up a rocket that will either ram into a planet and destroy it or it is going to fire some kind of laser. Either way Bomberman’s mission is clear, he has to destroy the ship right away. If he can do that, then the worlds will be safe and perhaps this villain group will forever stop trying to get in the way. The main villain is protected by the elemental bombers though. You’ve got a fire bomberman, water, ice, etc. They’re all working for the villains so I guess the main Bomberman is one of the only heroes left at this point. There is also Max who is around but don’t expect him to say anything.

The graphics are really solid here and I wanted to jump into that right away. It’s super impressive how many fully animated cutscenes we have here. I was super happy about that because not many titles did this back in the day. There are 2 big cutscenes in every world which establish the boss and set the stage up very well. Meanwhile the soundtrack is fairly decent. A little less memorable I will admit but it still works well so the technicals for this game were on point. Then we have the gameplay which was really solid too which makes for a balanced game. I will jump into that now.

In each level you have to get to the goal in order to complete it. To do that, you typically have to find some kind of switch or blow some enemies up. Each world has 6 levels at first although the latter worlds tend to be 4 levels instead. The first, second, fourth, and fifth levels are classic stages. You run and jump over obstacles. Then stages 3 and 6 are the boss fights of the area. Usually the third level’s boss is fairly easy and you can use any bomb to beat him while the 6th level’s boss is more difficult and only one element will be particularly useful here. So if you miss an ingredient for one of the bombs, the level will get tricky.

This is where Max comes in. He can hurt every boss with the exception of 1 with his unique power. It takes an extremely long time to charge but has the largest range in the game. It deals a quarter of 1 heart per hit so you can beat a boss with around 20 of those. I can see this working as a self imposed hard mode of sorts. If you get hit while charging then the energy ball drops and you have to start again. It makes it so Max is actually a rather difficult character to use but I did have to resort to him twice. You can also switch to him at any point during the normal levels but there isn’t really a reason to do that. Typically Bomberman is better for every situation.

There are only 12 different monsters to recruit in this game but they are all pretty interesting. The level up system is a bit basic this time as you can only go up to level 3. So at that point you will have maxed out the monster and there isn’t much more to be done there. You level up fairly quick so I maxed out around 5 of them before I beat the game. I don’t think it would take long to max out the rest. It looks like you can also unlock a bonus world but I’m not sure how you would do that. It’s probably connected to at least one of the collectibles that you can grab. So there is a decent amount of replay value here. The main campaign’s not all that long so you’ll have it completed in under 10 hours but with the replay value it might make it up to the double digits.

I appreciated that the collectibles weren’t fully mandatory for completing the game though. This one could be fairly difficult at times but in a very fair way. You just had to really apply yourself and be good at using the bombs and not rushing. Often times you will only get yourself into trouble if you try going too fast and start bumping into enemies. That’s really where the trouble starts but if you go slow then you shouldn’t really be getting hit. Some levels can take a while, one took me close to an hour although in part that’s because I got lost.

Each level does have a map but it’s fairly zoomed out so you can still end up bumping around a lot. Level 5-1 was easily the most difficult if you ask me. You have to activate statues and play a little minigame to determine your route and there is a lot of backtracking so that often meant I would pick the wrong path and have to start again When in doubt just go back to the start of the level and retrace your steps. The good thing is that the enemies don’t respawn so feel free to knock them out and then decide on a plan. That way you have no real distractions.

Overall, Bomberman Jetters is a pretty fun game. The actual gameplay is fun and the level designs clearly had a lot of effort put into them. The sheer size of some levels could be rather daunting but the game was really fair about everything. The way that the monsters and bombs are handled was better than in previous Bomberman games as well so this leads to a very smooth experience. It’s an easy game to pick up and play and I can safely say that it did exceed my expectations. The full anime cutscenes were just another boost to add to the top. So I would definitely say to pick up this game as soon as possible. You won’t regret it!

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4: Road to Boruto Review

The Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series has always been one of the top tier, elite video games of our generation. The amount of playable characters and attention to detail is absolutely uncanny! I don’t think we’ll ever see another Naruto game that can quite compete on this one’s level. It’s really the full package and a perfect end to the Ultimate Ninja Storm series. Way I see it, all other games are spinoffs until they announce a Ninja Storm 5. If you’ve been playing the series already then you know what to expect but if not, lets just say that it’s about to blow your mind!

The game picks up with the war and takes you through the rest of the series up through the first sequel movie. So it covers quite a lot of content. For the first time the series does take a few shortcuts with more anime type clips rather than doing all of the cell shaded cinematics. As you get deeper into the game it goes back to normal though. They’re both good of course but seeing the whole thing in the game’s animation style does get you a little more invested so I loved seeing that style. The story is a bit shorter than the last title but when you through in the Boruto part I would say it’s about the same length. I liked the way the story also diverges with both the Naruto and Sasuke paths. I had fun alternating to try and keep it all as chronological as possible.

The gameplay is that of a 3D fighter. You pick 3 fighters and then try to dominate your opponent in close quarters combat. You can switch fighters at will or use them as assists. The characters all have great combos and the final smashes are as cinematic as ever. Each fight is very fast paced and fluid. It’s some of the cleanest 3D fighting you will ever see. We also have the quick time events for the story mode battles and even a few alternate gameplay type moments like the Kaiju type fights. Those are always fun as well although I’m not nearly as good at those. Getting S ranks there feels like an extremely difficult task if you ask me.

So you can expect to spend at least 10-15 hours on the story. After that there is also an Adventure mode with tons of content and also good ole survival mode. Don’t expect this to be easy either. The survival mode actually gives you a good run for your money and the intimidating thing is how long it can be. For example one trophy is to defeat 30 opponents in a row so if you get sloppy or make a mistake 25 opponents deep, get ready to start from scratch. The trophies here definitely look very difficult. Certainly achievable as long as you train your skills though but I imagine you will be here for a very long time before you are able to knock it out.

It almost goes without saying but the graphics here are absolutely top notch. It’s great to see Naruto and the gang on the PS4. It’s really night and day compared to other games where Naruto has appeared in like Jump Force. The colors here are so vibrant and there are a ton of cool animations that aren’t just recycled among characters. The soundtrack is also pretty good. I tend to like all of the themes even if there isn’t any singular track that really stood out for me.

In terms of character balance the game seems to do a pretty good job. Some characters just seem to have final smash animations that are too long. Like you should be able to dodge or block their final smashes every single time. Rock Lee and Might Guy are two examples of this. Meanwhile some characters like Sasuke in his End of Series version are extremely useful and will hit the opponent almost every time. It’s pretty much a cheatcode in survival mode and I highly recommend using him. You can just keep on using the final smash over and over again for quick victories. Of course that does mean watching the cinematic over and over again so I hope you really enjoy it.

I’d also like to note that the fact that there are so many unique dialogue quotes for the final smash depending on your opponent is really cool. Again, it’s all the little things that help to really make this game stand out. If they could squeeze in an easter egg then that’s exactly what they do. I’m sure there are a bunch of little things that I haven’t even noticed yet. In fact, that’s a guarantee since there are a bunch of bonus missions and side quests that I haven’t even stepped into yet. So yeah this is the game that just keeps on delivering.

Overall, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is definitely an elite game. One that should not be underestimated at any cost. I highly recommend picking this game up immediately if you don’t already have it. It’s really the gold standard of what an anime fighting game should be like. Any series would certainly be super proud to have a title with this amount of professional development behind it. The content justifies the price many times over as well. Naruto will always be remembered as one of the most iconic and influential series of all time and titles like this do the legacy justice.

Extreme-G Review

It’s time for a racing game that was particularly inspired. This game has aged extremely well from the soundtrack to the visuals to the overall gameplay. Every part of the game really went hard and was better than I expected. Definitely a title you will want to check out right away when you boot up the Switch Online again. The game may not have a lot of single player content but the multiplayer is all that you need.

So at its core the main trait for this game is that it’s a futuristic racer kind of like F-Zero. It’s the kind of game where you get to blaze a trail past all of your opponents and go all the way to the goal. The road is fairly narrow so expect a lot of battling until you break away from the pack. You have a machine gun with a ton of ammo but taking down an opponent’s full health bar is extremely tricky. It takes so many hits that it almost feels pointless to use the gun but it’s still fun to have.

There are a number of items in the game though and that’s where it taps into its inner Mario Kart here. You can hit opponents with different kinds of energy blasts, aerial weapons, etc. Turning is the toughest part so half the time I would just absorb the hit and keep on going. Slowing down to do a sharp turn didn’t really feel worth it. Of course I’m sure that there are more optimal ways to play since I just know the basics here. The point is that it’s a lot of fun. The gameplay is very fast and something is always happening. The pacing is extremely good here.

The levels all look good here as well. They are all different while keeping the future aesthetic. Then you have the soundtrack which in particular is a big highlight here. The tunes are all just so good that you are left super impressed. There are very few games on the Nintendo 64 that could hope to hold their own against this one. It’s really ahead of its time. The graphics are also good, perhaps not as impressive as the soundtrack though.

Like I said, there’s not a whole lot of content in single player mode. There’s only 3-4 tournaments to play through there and even in those, some of the levels are recycled. So most of your play time will definitely be in multiplayer mode which is definitely a lot of fun and doesn’t really have any issues. Of course it will help to have someone to play with but there is also an online vs mode thanks to the new online features which is another buff to the game. Everything really went in its favor this time so that definitely turned into the best case scenario.

There’s not a whole lot more to say about the game. It is rather basic after all and that’s part of the charm. I suppose one last tip I will leave you with is to use the boost. It’s a bit deceptive in that you may not even realize that there is a boost feature. You have to tilt the control stick down and then you activate the boost. You can use it 3 times per race and it is a real game changer. You move incredibly fast when using the boost to the point where it’s almost literally game breaking as you fall through walls and deal a ton of damage. It’s pretty fun though I gotta say and that made the game even more enjoyable. I like to spam them at the start to build up a good lead but you can make a good case for saving them for the final lap instead to prevent the computer from doing any rubberbanding.

Overall, Extreme-G is definitely a really fun racing game. It’s basic but the execution is just so good. A lot of modern games could learn from this one’s example. Of course it would be nice to have a true story mode and some other features but when you buy a racing game, the main selling point is the actual racing and there are no issues there. So you really need to play this one as soon as possible and see just why it is so good. It’s definitely a title that deserves some kind of modern comeback.

Iggy’s Reckin’ Balls Review

It’s easy to see why this game never became a household name. I think it’s actually got a fairly interesting premise but the game doesn’t live up to it. The gameplay is way too limited and the platforming part just isn’t too fun. It should have leaned a bit harder into being a full on racing game and that would have worked better. This 50/50 split ultimately ends up limiting the game’s own potential. Still if you have the Switch Online service then you may as well give it a shot.

There are 2 main game modes here, Battle Mode and Grand Prix mode. There is also a training mode and for once I highly recommend that you check it out. It’s not that the controls are necessarily complex but they aren’t always intuitive so you want to know what you are doing first. This is particularly useful because the game can be deceptively difficult. I had an easy time for the first few levels but by level 10 I was starting to be left in the dust. I only won the first tournament by a single point and it was clear that I was going to get smoked in the levels after that.

Basically the race is going upwards rather than towards a goal. For example you need to get to the top floor and you do this by running and then jumping up a level. To fully reach it you have to press another button to grapple onto the ceiling. You can also use this to go down to spring yourself upwards. The physics for this work well but the whole game is super fast paced so you also need fast reaction times. It’s so easy to overshoot your target and run too far. Additionally the enemies are running around too and will try to get in your way. They will actively attack you and do their absolute best to get in your way. They do not hold back. You can use your grapple to slam them to the ground which will stun them for a bit but of course they can do the same to you.

Then the battle mode has the same gameplay but there is no end point. You have to instead hit your opponent 3 times in order to drain away all of his health. Once you have done that then you are all set. It is also a rather difficult mode to get the hang of because you have to time things perfectly since you and your opponent have the same attack range. Whoever lands the blow first will score the point and then you have to repeat that 3 times. I won a lot of times and also lost a lot of times so it was fairly balanced. I probably ended up spending a bit more time in this mode than in the races. It’s slightly more fun but still not thrilling.

The graphics aren’t bad though. It’s clearly not a top tier title by any means but I wouldn’t say it looks cheap either. The development shows the lack of budget more in the actual gameplay I’d say. The soundtrack is also rather good. Not out of this world good or anything like that but definitely good enough to warrant a mention. The technicals weren’t bad but unfortunately when the gameplay doesn’t deliver then the rest doesn’t ultimately matter all that much. Seriously, you need good gameplay to keep someone playing. That is why you pick up the game after all.

There is technically a good amount of content here. You can play through over 10 different grand prixes with several races in them. A lot of the levels do tend to look the same but they do start to get more difficult by covering more of the ground so you can’t jump just anywhere. It means you have to run around to get to your spot. There’s a decent amount of slow time compared to other racing titles which didn’t help this one. Monkey Ball gets around this by keeping a strict time limit on all levels so you have to move really fast. This game could have absolutely learned a few lessons there.

Overall, This is a game that will quickly be forgotten. It’s not that it’s a bad game but it doesn’t really have any hook to it. There’s no reason for me to play this over a traditional racing game like Mario Kart. It doesn’t stand out and there is no story mode to fall back on either. The racing ends up feeling a lot more repetitive due to the gameplay style of just climbing up. I appreciate the creativity here but it’s not enough for me to call this a good game. Ultimately your best bet is to duck this one for now and hope that one day they make a modern remake that really revamps the whole gameplay style.

Jump Force Review

I remember how disappointed everyone was after this game came out. Everyone was super hyped for the initial trailer and everything but the actual game sort of fell flat. I get it because the game could and should have been so much better. That said, I would still call it a great game. You get to have your favorite Jump heroes all teaming up and interacting in the story and the combat works well for the fighting aspect. Ultimately, I’m glad we got this game and I’m confident that a new one would be vastly improved since they can build off of their mistakes.

The basic story is that all of the Jump Worlds are converging with the real world. The heroes are all rather confused about what’s going on so they turn to a random organization where the head is confident that he can fix this. Goku, Naruto, and Luffy lead the 3 main teams and together they have to recruit the rest of the jump heroes and save the day. The new villains have these mysterious cubes and a dark book that allow them to make fully functional clones of all the heroes. Things are going crazy real quick so they have to be stopped.

The first thing I would note off the bat is to completely ignore the power levels here. Trust me, they make absolutely no sense here anyway. Goku, Naruto, Kenshin, etc. Everyone is portrayed to be at about the same strength and the same goes for the villains. This is all just to get all of the characters together but I do think that they should have tried a little harder to make the plot make sense. It really wouldn’t have been that hard you know? So the writing is pretty bad here but it’s still fun to see the characters around. The script makes them all sound a bit generic at times so you don’t get to see their character personalities shine through, but again it’s all just an excuse to see them running around. The story is rather weak but at least it has one. A lot of fighting games don’t even have that.

The gameplay is naturally what you are really here for and no worries, that part is really solid. It’s a 3D title like the Ultimate Ninja Storm games although it isn’t quite as polished as those since those are the golden standard across the video game industry. You use quick combos, power moves, and ultimate attacks to take down your opponents. You can freely change between characters mid combat and a big focus here is on timing. You can dodge and even counter attacks by clicking the escape button at the right time. When you do this, the enemy is always allowed to respond as well so then it becomes a back and forth game until one of you messes the timing up. This is pretty easy to do since the window you have it smaller each time. All it takes is a slight hesitation and you are out of luck.

In terms of graphics, the art style hasn’t aged all that well but the game still looks good. It was going for a hyper realistic style which as you can expect doesn’t translate very well for all of these colorful characters. It was definitely a very questionable design idea. The attacks all tend to look very flashy though although that is a double edged sword. The one weakness to the gameplay is that the cinematics all last just a smidge too long which adds up as you are playing each match. They should have cut the timing on those.

Speaking of time, get ready to see the loading screen a whole lot. I haven’t seen loading screens this long in a very long time. It’s sort of like Sonic 2006 for PS3. There are loading times after every battle and between every cutscene. For some reason the cutscenes are often broken up into multiple chunks so you will play 30 seconds, loading screen, next 30 seconds, loading screen, etc. It just keeps on happening which really keeps you busy. You want to have something on hand to multi task with during the load times.

That aside, the story is fairly lengthy though. It’ll definitely take you upwards of 15 hours to clear the campaign and aside from that there is a ton of replay value with all of the bonus missions. There are tons and tons of those to a super impressive degree. There is also a level up system so getting all of your characters to level 99 will take some time. It actually does make a difference in your stats so I recommend grinding those levels up as much as possible. Getting the Platinum trophy looks like it would be exceptionally difficult so good luck if you are aiming for that one.

Overall, Jump Force is a great game but one that is carried almost entirely by the gameplay. The modes around it can be rather lackluster and really don’t do justice to the overall premise of the game. This should have been one of those games that really wow’d you, you know? I should have still been talking about this game for years and years to come. Instead, there isn’t much reason to play it while better fighting games exist. The best you can say for it is that the game has a really fun cast of characters. That is certainly true and it will always be the main hook here but it also shows you how incredible this would have been if they had tried a little harder. So this may sound like the harshest 8 star review I’ve written but that just speaks to how much promise was here.

Sugoi Hebereke Review

It’s time for a game that’s a bit on the odd side. It’s okay but ends really fast. There are only a few levels before it starts looping so your best bet here is definitely the multiplayer mode and even then I’m not sure if it’s really going to keep your interest all that well. But hey I might be underestimating this one just a tad.

Basically you are playing as a bunch of little animals and you fight each other. The gameplay is that of an overhead fighter. The level starts off with a 1 on 1 fight but then as you progress through the game you get a 3 way free for all and then a 4 way free for all. You want to really make sure that you are dishing out the combos and heavy blows early on or you will quickly be left behind. I found the best thing to do was to focus on one opponent until you have him completely defeated. Then move onto the next one. Rinse and Repeat until you’ve finally taken everyone down for the count. It’s much easier this way because the computer isn’t great at head on fights. It is great at landing sucker punches and hits from behind though. When that happens then you are really in trouble.

That’s pretty much it though which is why I don’t put this game much higher. There’s really not much to it here at all. The gameplay is really simple so you will have the hang of it in no time but there is no depth here. It is truly a button masher/brawler all the way but one of the simplest ones that I’ve played. The character cast is quite small so don’t expect a lot of variety there and the same goes for the stages. It feels like the bare minimum amount of effort was put into this title and that’s a shame.

The graphics aren’t bad. At least they do look decent so I won’t say that the game cut any corners here. Could it look better? Yes of course but it’s not bad and that’s the important thing. The soundtrack is supremely forgettable of course but that’s really to be expected. A game like this one isn’t usually going to wow you in that department. Really what should make this game a success is the gameplay and to do that they needed to add more attacks or something. The game needs a hook because right now it doesn’t have one.

When you’re fighting the opponent you’re just thinking that you could be playing Street Fighter instead. Maybe if the story was super good then having it be translated would have helped but even then I have my doubts. I don’t get the feeling that there was much of a story from how short the cutscenes are. So that just means that the game is really out of luck on all sides. I’d play a modern reboot that added a ton of features but as it is this just feels like an incomplete game. If you play it, I guess I’d say to think of it more as a proof of concept. Not a full fledged fighting game. Then you can at least have fun thinking about how you would have tackled some things differently and what content you would have added.

Overall, This is a decent game but it is hurt by the lack of content and replay value. Ultimately there isn’t a ton to do here at all. You won’t be playing this for more than an hour and if I spent any money on the game then I would probably be very disappointed. As a free title with the Switch Online it’s not bad but I still couldn’t call it particularly good. This game will have to put in some work before I can really put it on that level. So, check it out if you’re curious but it doesn’t really hold up next to the others.

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Review

It’s time for the next big Naruto adventure! I do have to add one quick disclaimer here though which is that I wasn’t able to finish the final chapter. Due to an error with the disc, the final chapter just cut out midway which was unfortunate. I tried a bunch of restoration methods but no dice but this review still covers over 90% of the game which is close enough. As always the Ninja Storm games go in hard with an absolutely elite title.

This game covers the events after the Pain arc into fairly deep into the war. It’s definitely cool to be seeing all of this classic Naruto content once again. It really picks up right where the last game left off in terms of having a ton of content and lots of things to do around every corner. The story mode itself is fairly long at over 10 hours in length. The first chapter may have you scared for a moment with how long it is but the rest of the chapters are shorter to compensate.

Of course outside of the story mode there are a lot of other content options to go through as well. You have missions side content, unlockables, trophies to obtain, etc. You should be kept pretty busy here and while the Platinum is one of those that feels very achievable, it will still take a long while to actually finish. The game goes for a fairly low price right now though so you’ve really got a bargain here in terms of replay value. The biggest mode for replay value of course is vs mode though.

There are so many characters to play as here and they all feel fairly unique. The game did a really good job of not just copy and pasting the techniques. The final smashes for each character are rock solid and feel very grand in scope. There were no corners cut in this title and the gameplay itself is very deep with the attacks, ninjutsu, quick dodges, etc. There is a ton of strategy here and you can even add another dynamic to think about if you equip items.

I could go on and on just about the gameplay. Then in story mode you also have a lot of quick time events. Noticeably there are less than in the second game so I was a little surprised about that but I know that not everyone loves that kind of sequence. So at least I still had enough to have fun with so I was satisfied here. Then you also have the aerial boss battles which are fun. They play out like Kaiju type battles where you have to time your attacks well since neither opponent will be going too fast. Take the strategic high ground and you should be good. You also have some Dynasty Warrior type setups when you have to fight multiple opponents at once. That was really cool.

It shows how much range these developers have since they were able to have successful gameplay for so many styles. Each part felt very high budget and they could have made even more levels with them. Mix that in with how detailed the story mode is and they definitely went above and beyond the call of duty. I would argue that the bar is set up so high that any non Storm game is unlikely to come close to these. Of course I have one more mainline game coming up so I’m eager to see how that goes.

The soundtrack doesn’t seem to have introduced too many new themes this time but there are still a lot of fun ones here. I’d say the Storm series tends to be very good in a subtle way. It’s not necessarily blowing your mind with a ton of rock themes but it ends up fitting the scenes very well. Ultimately that’s what this game does really well, it’s loads of fun at all times. The production values are incredible and this feels like a PS4 game. The sheer amount of cinematics would be hard for any other PS3 games to match. Then throw in the secret conditions, bonus cinematics, etc. It feels like the kind of game where you could keep on finding new secrets and bonuses the more you play through it.

Pure gameplay-wise I would say my favorite character is definitely Nine Tails-Cloaked Naruto. They use a different sound effect for each blow when you’re playing in that mode and it shows just how strong he is. You’re moving at incredible speeds the whole time and the only catch is that he doesn’t have a final smash. Seems like a fair trade-off to me. I’m not sure if you’re able to select him as his own character in vs mode or if he’s treated purely as an awakening there, but if you can choose him then that’s the guy to play as. It can be easy to dodge a lot of final smashes after all so you don’t really want to rely on those. Even in story mode it can be hard to land the final smash sometimes because of how much wind-up there is.

This is especially true for characters like Tsunade and Kakashi who have to rely on you staying still. If you move just about at all then you’re basically out of luck. At least some final smashes like Naruto’s have you running after the opponent. I should probably look up some high level tournament play to see how it goes there. I’m betting they don’t spam final smashes all that much.

Overall, Ninja Storm 3 continues the series on an extremely high level. It’s got tons of great action scenes and story content whether you are a big Naruto fan or not. It’s the kind of story you can just jump into without any regrets. There are a ton of characters to choose from so you should not have a problem finding someone to main and the stage variety is solid as well. So I definitely recommend buying the game as soon as possible and just hope your copy lets you play through the final chapter. What are the odds of that though right? That glitch feels like it has to be a million to 1 or something.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 Review

The Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm games are some of the greatest titles of all time. The amount of dedication and work that went into these is absolutely crazy. The developers clearly had a lot of passion for the series and it shows in the attention to detail here. You’ve got extra gameplay styles that appear briefly to switch things up even if just for one level and then you’ve got a ton of cinematics and quick time events. It’s been great reliving the Naruto adventures and it also serves as a reminder for why Naruto will always be one of the Big 3.

This game covers the start of Shippuden all the way through the Pain arc which is a pretty impressive amount of content to go through. Each chapter has a big boss battle at the end with full quick time events and everything. You really see Naruto get stronger and improve his craft with every boss battle. While they can’t quite cover everything, a ton of events are covered to the point where you could really play through the game as a newcomer and get what’s going on. I haven’t seen a story this detailed since DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 which is still in the hall of fame for story adaptions like this.

I really enjoy the quick time events because you don’t see those quite as often in games anymore. They help add that cinematic feel to the game and also put your skills to the absolute test. You have to be able to hold your own here or it’s all over. You also get a bonus for doing really well at the quick time events. If you get the maximum star rating then you unlock a little secret cutscene. It’s only a few seconds long but it feels good to get this. It’s like a feather in your cap for really focusing up and doing what had to be done. I felt really good about it at least.

The actual game is fairly long so you should be satisfied with the content. It’s at least 10 hours to complete the story and there is a post game/many side missions to complete as well. Throw in the trophy hunting and you will be busy here for a very long time. There’s a good amount of replay value and the Platinum is very achieveable so it gives you something to really work for. Then of course there is the fact that this is a fighting game so you can have fun playing against other opponents for hours and hours as long as you want. There is no real reason to stop after all. Each battle is unique and the gameplay system is a lot of fun.

I didn’t talk much about that but this is your classic 3D combat style. It goes into more detail than other fighting games though. Each character has up to 4 different normal combo based on which way you hold the control stick. Then you have all of their Ninjutsu, some can use aerial ninjutsu and of course you have the final smashes as well. They’re all very cinematic while not taking too much time away from the gameplay. You also have your awakening mode and of course a lot of ways to use shuriken and other projectiles to your advantage.

Yeah the gameplay holds up exceptionally well here. I also can’t forget to talk about the graphics which are excellent. The fact that it looks better than a PS5 game like Jujutsu Kaisen says a lot. The character models are on point and so this helps to enhance the fights that you are seeing in the cutscenes. A lot of the time it’s like you are watching a movie here. Then you also have the futile battles like Jiraiya fighting against all of the Pains and the gameplay intentionally makes you helpless there. I thought that was a really good way to handle that.

So if you’re a long time Naruto fan then you will get an extra kick out of the game but any non fan can see the dedication as well. The soundtrack is also really good and there is a lot of variety here from the various level themes, stage themes, etc. Every aspect of the game is absolutely exceptional. With the game being this good you may expect this to be a super long review but in a way that’s why it’s short. I feel like it’s easier to go on and on when a game is bad but when it’s excellent there are only so many ways to say that it’s amazing you know?

Like after a while it would almost be like I’m talking in circles. The character cast is super large, there are a ton of stages, a ton of content, etc. The quality of life features are great, the only thing it is missing is quick travel and that’s a super minor thing in the grand scheme of things. I really can’t come up with any negatives here because the game is so much fun. There’s no way to do it justice without just going in and playing it. You will quickly see how much heart it has. It’s like the anime version of Super Smash Bros with how much is fit into this game. It really is one of the gold standards for video games in general and I can see why the series is so well respected.

Overall, Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 is an absolutely incredible game. It goes the extra mile in every way possible and will be known as one of the definitive Naruto experiences. Of course it has sequels which will likely keep up that same level of quality so I look forward to playing those soon. I’ve even started one of them already so you can tell that the hype got to me. I had to be ready for that marathon! If you don’t own this game yet then you should absolutely change that as soon as possible!

Super R-Type Review

Time for another adventure through the SNES catalogue. This game takes us back into the realm of Sci-Fi which is always a good place to be. It’s a fun game but one where the penalty for death is way too high. Getting sent all the way back to the beginning of the level because you took a hit is crazy. This means you have to go through the whole level without getting tagged and that is a tall order. I’d say that it would quickly cross the line from being fun and challenging to just being annoying very quickly. The rewind feature helps to counter that but otherwise it would be rather rough.

There’s barely a plot here but you get in your ship and start to take the aliens down for the count. The gameplay is fairly basic. It’s an auto scroller 2D game where you keep on going through the level and watch as scores of enemies approach you. You are able to use your machine gun to mow them down and can store up energy for a charge shot. You gain new ways to fire your laser as you collect power ups like energy blasts that fire backwards. These are super handy to have and you even get a little drone that helps you out. Like I mentioned before though, if one attack hits you then you blow up. There are no exceptions here so prepare yourself.

There are 7 levels in the game and each one ends with a big boss. Most of the bosses are true glass cannons. They overwhelm the screen with attacks but a few hits defeats them. I appreciate that at least because it’s super hard to dodge their attacks. If they had a ton of health or something then that would just make the problem even worse. As it is you at least feel like you have a chance. Perhaps not an incredible chance of winning since this game is rather difficult but it’s certainly not impossible. I imagine you will get better at reading the different enemy formations as well and coming up with plans of your own to combat them.

Meanwhile the graphics here are rather sharp. The artstyle really makes the most out of them and the enemy designs are all good. My only problem here is how much the game lags. It lags constantly for all of the latter levels since there are so many enemies on screen and this version of the game can’t handle that. It’s just so noticeable that it’s crazy. It’s not the kind of thing that would lower the score for me or anything like that but I haven’t played a game with this much lag in ages so it was still funny to note. As for the soundtrack, it’s reasonable enough. I won’t be humming any of the tunes or anything like that but it sounds good while you are playing through.

So in a lot of ways it’s really what you would expect in a sci-fi shooter. It’s not doing anything out of the ordinary or smashing records but it is delivering a quality experience on all sides. I do think they put in a good amount of effort for this one and it’s clear that it’s not just some easy cash grab. So I can appreciate that. Make a modern remake of this game with a real cinematic story and I think you’d really be delivering on some great content.

Overall, Super R-Type is a pretty good game that is bogged down by the design choice of having such a harsh penalty for death. Without that then I think this would have been a whole lot better. Still, it is entertaining. They did well on the technical elements and it can go blow for blow with a lot of other games in the genre. I’d say win or lose, it’s a fun game to pick up so I recommend giving it a try. Just go for the person high score of how far you can make it and that’s even a fun way to tackle this as a multiplayer type of game. Once you are able to see how far everyone can go you will be all set.
