Obi-Wan Kenobi vs Cheetah

Suggested by iKnowledge Obi Wan Kenobi is a pretty skilled Jedi and known as one of the strongest masters. That said, he’s still out of his league against the Cheetah. She can match him blow for blow and then some. The fact of the matter is that Cheetah is stronger and faster than Obi-Wan. She could take him down before he has time to swing his Lightsaber. The Force will not be enough to turn the tides of this fight as Cheetah has far too much agility to be hit. Cheetah wins.

Astaroth vs Feanor

Suggested by iKnowledge This is a pretty close fight. Feanor has fought off some pretty powerful opponents back in his day although we haven’t really seen a whole lot of what he can do. Astaroth has gotten a lot of screen time. While his raw power is nothing to write home about, what gives him a fighting chance here is his Soul Edge blade. With the completed one at the ready I’d give him the edge here. Feanor won’t be surviving many hits against a weapon like that and the range will work to Astaroth’s favor. Astaroth wins.

Black Krrsantan vs Voldo

Suggested by iKnowledge Black Krrsantan is a pretty skilled fighter. Effectively he’s like Chewbacca if the classic Star Wars character was even more ferocious in combat. Voldo’s fighting style is very hard to predict though and that’s what is going to help give him an edge here. His weapons are all quite sharp and with his speed he will be able to cleave through Black Krrsantan pretty quickly. No amount of hand to hand skill will stop Voldo’s wrath. Voldo wins.

Sonya Blade vs Sango

Suggested by iKnowledge It’s time for a battle of close range fighters. Both of these combatants do have some long range options though. Sonya in the form of her energy blasts and Sango with her boomerangs. Sonya probably has more skill in pure hand to hand combat but Sango manages to catch up with her pure speed and large blade. Sonya won’t be able to stay out of range or dodge Sango’s attacks for very long. They’ll catch up to her before long and that’ll be game over. Sango wins.

Celeste Morne vs Qui Gon

Suggested by iKnowledge This is a pretty close fight. Qui Gon had some decent force abilities but never btruly mastered it. This kept him from reaching the same pinnacle as many other Jedi masters. Meanwhile Celeste is more of a hit and run kind of fighter. She doesn’t have the raw power that a lot of the other Star Wars characters have. So this will really dome down to overall technique and I’m confident that Celeste would have the edge. She had much fiercer training which will come into play here. As talented as Qui Gon is, he just won’t be a match for her. Celeste Morne wins.

Punisher vs Topman

Suggested by Destroyer Topman can spin a whole lot which makes him a pretty fun fighter. That being said, I don’t think he will be able to stop Punisher. Punisher has the Power Cosmic as well as the Ghost Rider abilities making him a formidable foe. He can easily shut down any attempt Topman makes to try and score some damage. Punisher is just on a completely different level in speed and power. Topman’s attacks are already limited as it is and that will become readily apparent as soon as Punisher launches his first attack. Punisher wins.

Iori vs Dark Samus

Suggested by Destroyer Iori has returned and now he is up against one of Samus’ stronger opponents. Dark Samus has a powerful array of energy blasts and can even teleport. The main drawback that will hurt her is the fact that Iori easily wins in speed. His sword strikes will deal massive damage here and Dark Samus will not be able to withstand the barrage for long. Her zero laser is hard to dodge and definitely Dark Samus’ best chance of victory. I don’t believe she would be able to tag him in time though. Iori wins.

Iori vs Tai

Suggested by Destroyer Iori is a pretty powerful swordsman. His speed is on a completely different level at a point where humans can’t keep up. That being said, Tai has a powerful bodyguard at the ready. His Omnimon would be able to take down Iori. Even if Iori could conceivably get some hits in, they would do virtually 0 damage against a foe of Omnimon’s durability. Tai will definitely end up scoring the victory in this match as he shows that physical ability simply isn’t enough to take down a Digital Monster. Tai wins.

Three Days of the Condor Review

This review is of the edited TV-14 version of the film. All thoughts below should be addressed as such as a review of the unedited version would be more negative.

It’s time to look at a conspiracy film involving the CIA. Unlike Hopscotch though this one is played pretty seriously. There are a lot of twists and turns to be found here so you definitely can’t trust anyone. At the end of the day the characters all have to watch their backs. Knowing too much information can definitely be dangerous in this kind of scenario. Although in these movies even if you don’t find something out you can be in danger too. The CIA is just pretty dangerous although in theory the main characters knew that when they signed up.

The film starts off with Turner heading into the office for a normal day at his CIA job. He shows up late and uses the back door to help undermine the security efforts of the team. Everything’s a bit of a joke to him, but why not? He works in the mail division of the CIA and believes that things will be pretty safe here. Well, one day when he goes out to lunch the rest of his team is murdered. Turner calls in for help but the attacks keep on coming. It appears that the enemy has someone on the inside. Turner no longer knows who he can trust in the CIA and they believe he has turned rogue. His only option is to try and prove his loyalty but when you don’t know the extent of the villains’ influence then this is definitely a pretty tricky situation.

Ironically Turner taking the back entrance for lunch is what saved his life. The rest of the group was definitely not ready for this attack. I would have liked to have seen them take down at least one of the villains but it’s pretty realistic. The security protocols here are sound but the group grew lazy and complacent in the security. The instant people walked through the front door unannounced the CIA should have had their guns out. The problem is that this is a regular occurrence between deliveries and such so they were caught unprepared. In truth they should have had even tighter protocols. Nobody should be allowed through that door without ID which means that nobody in the building should even be allowed to order lunch. Of course, even in real life a lot of these places take many security chances.

I can’t say I’m a big fan of Turner though. I don’t mind his antics early on but I don’t feel like he handled being on the run so well. Mainly what holds him back is the whole plot with Kathy. He certainly needed a place to hide out but he was pretty iffy with how he handled the whole thing. Once he went to complete kidnapping that basically made him a villain as well. The romance that ensued was also fishy because it felt extremely rushed and almost like stockholm syndrome there. How do you fall for the guy who just kidnapped you and Kathy apparently had a boyfriend already. I think that whole plot should have been written out and those scenes are what keeps this film’s score down 1 point.

Kathy’s just not a realistic character in that sense and suffers from the same issues as Turner. It does seem like she’s a nice person at least and does her best to help Turner. It makes for the team up that he needed since he would be doomed on his own, but either way you know he’s only prolonging the inevitable. Conspiracy films like this are pretty fun because of how stacked the deck is against the lead. Turner is constantly outnumbered and has to try and survive on his own wits and wile.

I liked how the ending plays out. Naturally there’s basically nothing I can say about that but it was a fun dynamic. Turner has to make a tough call and live with the consequences. There’s a good amount of suspense and tension as the film ends and it’s all pretty satisfying. The film may not be as explosive as a modern spy type film but at the same time there was still more action than what I was expecting. We got some fun gun fights and the villains even used a classic video game tactic where you throw some objects in front of you. I’m not sure how useful that is in practice and it didn’t do much in this film but it was fun to see.

There are quite a few CIA members who show up during the film. You have to decide who’s in on it and who isn’t. One of the best scenes in the film because of this was the round table meeting at the CIA base. That’s because you have the top 12 or so members talking things out. You suspect that some of them are actually moles but not everyone. Some of them want to legitimately find Turner to help him out while others want to backstab him. It adds an extra level of tension especially when some members might suspect something. This isn’t the kind of film that will really delve into that as it’s a subplot at best but definitely a compelling one.

Overall, Three Days of the Condor is definitely pretty fun. It’s at its best when the film is really playing up the tension and danger elements. I thought the story was well constructed and the plot is pretty interesting. Throw away that random romance and it would be even better. The film is pretty intense and the villains make their presence known right away. If you like a good film about trying to survive with everyone out to destroy you then this is a fun one to watch. It’ll keep you engaged from start to finish which is what every good thriller should do.

Overall 6/10

Metroid II: Return of Samus Review

It’s time to look at the next installment in the Metroid series. As you may recall I was definitely not a big fan of the first game. The maze system is far too vague and you can get lost in hours. Major props to people who beat this game back in the day without save states or guides. I don’t think I would have been completing that game. This one improves upon the original for sure, but I still wouldn’t say it’s quite at the level where I could give it a positive score either. I like that the game is a bit more direct with the structure and the goals of the game but we don’t yet have a good map system in play.

The game starts with Samus landing on another planet. It’s time to exterminate all of the Metroids on this planet and there are quite a few of them so it won’t be easy. You’ve got a Metroid counter on the screen letting you know how many enemies are still on the planet. Gradually you have to take them all down. After you’ve beaten a good number of the metroids you unlock new paths to find the rest. Needless to say, without a map you could be here for a very long time. Another tricky thing is when you run out of missiles. Without missiles you can’t defeat the Metroids so you will have to backtrack and find a refill machine or beat a ton of enemies. The drop rate on the enemies isn’t too great though.

It’s always interesting playing a game in black and white. I haven’t played may of those at all so it’s really very different. Kind of cool in a nostalgia sense although I definitely miss the color. The graphics are okay but I can’t say they are particularly good in this state. The soundtrack is also pretty limited, the series didn’t hit the next level until Super Metroid. At that point is when we got an incredible soundtrack with all of the iconic tunes. This is right before that hype era.

The campaign is fairly short, but again that’s not considering that you should get lost quite a few times. It took me close to 6 hours to beat the game and that’s considering that I had a map with me. The game does have a real ending which ties into Super Metroid which is cool though. I like how the game is structured even if it is ultimately held back by how the game mechanics work. If this game had a real map then I dare say it would have been pretty good right off the bat.

It’s very challenging though so gamers who like to really work for their wins will definitely appreciate that. Some of the Metroids take numerous hits to take down. You’ll really have to be strategic here as even with a lot of life tanks you may quickly end up getting overwhelmed. You can’t really just run in and start swinging. Admittedly that’s usually how I like to roll but you gotta roll with the game sometimes and this is definitely one of those times. You either fight strategic or you lose.

There’s no real replay value to be found here. Once you beat the game that’s it. There’s no true post game. I suppose you can try to beat the game with a quicker clear time to get a different ending but that’s about it. It’s not personally enough incentive for me to go back in but if you really like the gameplay style then it’s a nice way to challenge yourself.

Overall, There’s not a whole lot more to say about this one. It’s a very similar game to the original Metroid except it’s less of a maze adventure as you’ve got more of a solid goal to achieve. You know from the start that you have to beat all of the Metroids so you find and blast them. Metroid is one of those series that I like a lot but mainly thanks to the later games. I’m still not impressed with these early titles. I’ll try out Super Metroid soon though and that one should be a big improvement. If you really like Metroid then maybe check this one out, but I’d recommend getting the 3DS remake instead. I imagine that the enhancements should help fix some of this title’s issues.
