ToeJam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron Review

Toejam has returned for another big adventure. This one’s definitely pretty different with how it plays out as a 2D platformer this time. It’s okay in most areas but does lag behind the average platformer. It could use more of a plot and also more straight forward levels. This = is one of those games that is all about finding a ton of collectibles in a way in order to complete the game. That’s not exactly my cup of tea as you may know.

The basic plot involves a lot of craziness but the important thing to know if that you must capture all of the humans who have been released into the wild across 17 levels. Each level varies in term of how many humans are captured and fortunately you have a compass that lets you know where the next one is at all times. When the compass turns green then you have caught all of the humans in the level and can proceed. You must capture all humans before you can get to the next level so in that way the game really makes sure that you have done a thorough job. It often involves going through quite a few different paths to locate them all.

You throw bottles as your main attack but you have two super moves. One of them lets you run around like crazy throwing bottles everywhere while the other one has you summon a washing machine of sorts that absorbs all nearby enemies. They’re both pretty handy so you should save them for when you really need them. Some of the humans are rather powerful after all so you want a good move in your back pocket after all. Sometimes you are up against a whole pack of dogs and they make good use of their sheer numbers. A single hit takes quite a bit of your health away. Then you have the photograph pros who really don’t play around. Their pictures stun you for a few seconds while also dealing a lot of damage. Underestimate them at your own peril.

The toughest enemy has to be the guy on a flying carpet though. It takes a lot of hits to defeat him and since he is constantly flying away it is difficult to go on the offensive. A few sucker hits is enough to really take the fight out of you and that is the whole plan in a nutshell. There are burgers and such that you can grab to replenish your health but you have to be careful checking the trees because they also contain items that will make you lose health like bowling balls. Naturally those are infinite while the health items are one time use only.

You can use ESP to see through objects and know which place are safe to check but as you can probably guess these run on an energy meter. Once you’ve used them up it’ll generally be a while before you have enough energy to do it again. You can teleport infinitely though which is really handy. Not just handy, it is absolutely necessary in order to beat some of the humans so you need to keep that in mind. I kept forgetting that I even had this ability for most of the game.

As far as the graphics go, I would say those are pretty good. The character models are fun and the levels definitely keep that odd look you would expect from the series. Everything always appears to be a bit off which is of course the entire point. This has always been a crazy universe and the game keeps that same energy. The soundtrack is more on the boring side though, I’d like to see them get more creative with it than what we have seen so far. I know there is a whole lot of energy there that they can channel into some really good beats.

There’s not much in the way of replay value since you have to round up all of the humans anyway. The game’s length is pretty decent though because like I said it takes a while to get all of those humans. They keep running around trying to buy time after all. All you really need to do in order to make the game better would be to make the platforming a bit more fun. I dare say that the bottle throwing should be removed in favor of a more traditional punch or jump. It would feel a lot more satisfying when defeating the humans and would also help the platforming. Having to hold the down button while jumping to go higher also doesn’t feel very intuitive. It works well enough but it just feels so random in the end. It’s definitely there just to mess with the average player.

I’d say again, it’s not a bad game but it’s not a particularly good one either. It could have been a lot more interesting and as it stands it will end up forgotten. If not for the Switch Online I would bet that most people haven’t even heard of it before. That’s just how obscure this title is. The series definitely needs some kind of a big modern AAA remake that can turn the franchise around. As it is, this one just isn’t performing well enough to break out on its own.

Overall, Toejam has its moments but having to capture all of the humans can be more on the annoying side. The 17 levels feel quite long by the time you are done with the game and you have to imagine that they could have made the levels a lot more compressed and fun. Give me 34 shorter levels instead of the 17 really long ones. If you have the Switch Online then you should check this one out but it’s probably not a game that I would have searched for otherwise. It’s just not really hitting the heart of what it means to be a platformer. That didn’t happen.

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare Review

I want you to imagine for a minute what it would be like to be alone in the dark. Not by yourself mind you, but surrounded by tons of giant man eating spiders. Sounds a little scary right? Well, the game is definitely trying to build up that atmosphere and I would say it does a reasonable job considering its limitations. That being said, I would not call the game an all star or anything like that. It’s reasonable but could have used a little more time in the kitchen to be baked to perfection.

The game starts with the main character’s friend being murdered so he flies out to the remote island along with his friend to find out what happened. Unfortunately she is eaten by the super spiders so the lead is on his own now. He is completely alone with no way to get off this island and must still contend with whatever happened to his friend. Do the spiders have a leader? Armed with only a few bullets and his normal gun, the main character must surpass the odds and try to survive.

The idea of a classic survival game on the game boy color is pretty interesting. It’s definitely not something that you see very often that’s for sure. I should say that this does lead into the game’s biggest flaw which is that there is a finite amount of bullets in the game. So if you run out of those, then you are dead. You automatically get a game over when you’re out of bullets. There are 2 more guns that you can unlock over the course of the game though. You need to make sure that you find these because the game is 100% impossible otherwise. I had to go backwards and unlock the final gun or I would have been completely stuck myself. I get the idea behind this as it makes the game scarier but much like an arbitrary time limit as in Pikmin, it only serves to hurt the game. It’s fun to explore around the house and find things but it becomes more annoying when you have to be stressed out about your bullet count.

Minion encounters only appear at certain points and you are unable to run away from them but that’s what makes it harder since you can’t just grind away at getting more ammo. The battles will have some ammo around so you want to grab it but you have to do this before you defeat all of the minions or what ends up happening is the ammo disappears. That means running from the spiders the whole time but of course they are faster than you so you will end up taking a lot of damage. Each bite takes out a whole chunk of health so you need to be careful. There are a lot of potions you get during the game but like everything else, these are limited.

The core of the gameplay is really a puzzle. Almost like a Metroidvania as you have to go back and forth across all the rooms as you obtain new items and abilities. It’s definitely not as linear as you might expect. Your I Spy skills will come in handy here too as almost every room has something to grab. So if you miss it, you will almost certainly need to make a long trek back which won’t be all that much fun. There are also a lot of exits and entrances in each room so it can be difficult to keep track of them.

This comes down to the console limitations. The graphics are very poor and stretched out the whole time so it can be very hard to tell where you are going or even where you are. There are full transitions between every room so the camera suddenly changing can be disorienting. Similarly every cutscene has a white flash between the dialogue which can be annoying. It’s definitely tough on the eyes. The game didn’t even try on the soundtrack as most of the game is completely silent. Music only plays during cutscenes and it’s usually the same track spammed over and over again.

The sad part is that the track is actually really good but you need it to appear during gameplay. It makes the cutscenes really jarring to go from silent to suddenly full of life. I will say though that the story itself is pretty good. I was fairly engaged and it felt like a proper narrative that you might see in a horror story. I definitely give the game full props there. They did good on this area even with the limited budget. I also generally think the concept of finding items through the house and gradually getting to the end is a fun one. With a bigger budget and quality of life updates then this could have really been a winner.

The campaign is fairly short but it is really easy to get lost so I would say to factor that in as you play the game. The videos online show people beating it in about an hour but that’s not really realistic for most players. I certainly ended up doubling or maybe even tripling that time. All it takes is to miss one item and then you are really in a tough spot. So make sure you really check everything out. Often times it is best to just keep spamming the B and A buttons as you move through each room. That way you can really be sure that you have inspected everything.

Overall, Alone in the Dark is a game that had its positives but the actual experience has too many rough patches for me to really call it good. It ends up staying right in the middle at best which still isn’t all that bad to be honest. If you have the Switch Online then you should check it out since it’s free at that point. There are better games to be sure but this is still a unique one and worth checking out in some capacity.

Match Masters Review

It’s time for another classic IOS game but unfortunately this one was a little too ambitious and didn’t end up working out. Why does every game have to try and add an extra gimmick to itself nowadays? Stick to the classic matching mechanics and you’d be an absolute winner! Ah well, this game can be fun but it has game breaking mechanics that ensured I would be done with it sooner than later. It’s been trending as one of the top IOS puzzle games and I can’t cosign that in the end.

So the basic gameplay is that you have to match 3 objects together. Easy enough right? You can move any object by one space so if you see 2 that are together and a third is only one square away, you can merge them. If you can get a set of 4 or even 5 then of course that is the best. Doing 4 in a row grants you a line breaking symbol and doing 5 gets you a super power bomb. It’s a good blend of bonuses there. You can also equip a super attack which gets charged by matching objects of that color. So sometimes you have to decide between matching 4 of one type or 3 of your super attack’s type. Keep in mind which one will have the better long term effects and then you’re good to go.

So the main twist is that this is a multiplayer only title. The whole game is about fighting other opponents in real time. I can’t tell if I’m fighting real opponents the whole time or if these are bots. The game is definitely big enough where they could all be real but I know online games like to have a little fun with that so we’ll have to see if this is actually the case. Either way it is fun to see your rank go up or down after each fight depending on who won and how good everyone did.

The matches mainly feel luck based though so it can be a little annoying when you lose and don’t make any progress to your level or anything. That’s where the game misses the single player mode but the biggest issue is the time lag. Your opponent can take a little while to make their move and that has an absolute stacking effect in the end because you have to wait for so many moves. It gets annoying after a while when you just want to play. This is a fairly simple game with no extra mechanics so once you learn it that’s it. You want to be able to just keep on playing.

Unfortunately every match has you end up using one of your cards so then that’s it for it. I didn’t play enough to use up all of my cards but if that means you have to take a break from playing that would be annoying. At least there are no live ads or anything like that so I appreciate that. Those are the absolute worst things to see while you are trying to enjoy a game. Nearly a deal breaker all the way I gotta say.

The graphics are reasonably good though. Nothing amazing or impressive but at least it’s all pretty clear so you always know what you are looking at. I suppose I can’t really ask for much more out of a matching title. Likewise there isn’t much of a soundtrack but I wasn’t expecting one. You’ll likely just be listening to Pandora in the background anyway right? That’s what I would be expecting at least.

The only thing Match Masters needs to do is be fun and making this multiplayer only is really not the move. Having single player modes and a basic story would have taken the game so far. Instead, it’s probably best if you know someone else that plays it. Otherwise there’s just not enough time to get in as many matches as you want and it gets overshadowed by the solo games.

Overall, Match Masters is a good game but it is definitely hampered by the multiplayer mode. I don’t want to always be waiting for the other guy to make his 3 moves in a row. Depending on the combo and how strong the opponent is, sometimes you have to wait for 5-6 moves. Give me a single player campaign instead and also don’t have the super attacks be removed after you use them. You should be able to keep the options once you’ve unlocked them without this whole inventory system. Making me feel like I’ve just rented my own unlockables feels more than a little crafty.

Gargoyle’s Quest Review

It’s time for a fairly reasonable game on the Game Boy. This one is trying to be a mini version of Legend of Zelda to an extent and it works in some ways but not as much in some others. Naturally it is missing some of the quality of life features that a modern title would have and so the game has to try and succeed in spite of that. I played through the whole thing but as a kid I don’t think I would have picked it off the shelves. This isn’t really a AAA title in the end.

You play as the Gargoyle himself although despite the cover showing him as green, the creature is fully red. You have fire blasts and can jump around although there isn’t really much flight. The demons are at war and you have to finish off all of the villains. It won’t be easy but Gargoyle is up to the task. He is really the only fighter around after all so if he doesn’t step up, then nobody else ever will.

The gameplay is an overhead style so that’s also why I throw in the Legend of Zelda comparisons. Typically you need to enter a town, talk to some folks and start up a quest. This will have you go into a cave/dungeon of sorts to beat up on an opponent and get whatever relic you needed in order to proceed further. Rinse and repeat as you go through all of the levels. It’s an easy enough formula but it isn’t always obvious where you need to go next. You will have to have a lot of creativity here as you figure out what item will get you past the next obstacle. If you mix it up then you will be in big trouble on all sides. Mainly you’ll just waste a lot of time but it also compounds the issue. Now you’re checking the whole world for a clue on where you need to go next and of course that’s not going to be easy.

The NPCs don’t give you great advice and the game doesn’t always explain the powers. You get several different
flame attacks as you go through the game but which ones do the most damage? You’ll just have to hope for the best. I found the second fire attack to be the easiest to use but for all I know I was holding myself back by sticking to that one. You just don’t really know one way or the other and that’s unfortunate.

Well, just keep at it and you’ll be fine. The game’s not all that long but it can still be a few hours. The final boss is also very difficult so get ready with the rewind techniques. Without that it would be very hard to hang in there for very long. A big part of this is because of the overall durability of the villains. They can take numerous hits over and over and over again. Meanwhile you can only survive a few hits and then you’re down for the count. Perhaps there are some upgrades or other things hidden in the game, that’s definitely possible.

The graphics aren’t bad here. I can give the game some credit there. Certainly nothing amazing or anything like that but it has some heart to it which is more than I can say for a lot of its competitors. The soundtrack is more on the forgettable side though, you won’t be thinking about that much while you try and get through the game. The technical aspects aren’t bad and at the very least they don’t hold the game back further.

In the end I would say the main thing holding the game back is the fact that there is no real reason to play through it. There are certainly many better games out there in basically every way. It’s not a poorly made game though and so I won’t give it a negative score. It does just enough where I can say that it balances out in the middle. I enjoyed one of the sequels a lot more than this one so at least I know that the series does get better as it goes on.

Overall, Gargoyle’s Quest is a reasonable game but one that can be annoying at times. You always have to be very careful with any game that has a big hub world and different puzzles to solve. When you mess up the balance then that is game over on a massive scale. I’ve played better and worse titles than this game though. At the very least I can commend it on having a real plot since that is something you can take for granted on older titles. A modern remake of this game on the PS5 or something like that could absolutely be a lot of fun though. The gameplay would be incredible and then you’d just need to add some more details to the story. It would be 100% feasible.

Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom Review

It’s time to look at good ole Sonic Dash. I never actually played the original but I did try out the Sonic Forces title a while back which was a lot of fun. It was time to check out good ole Sonic Boom and as you can probably guess it wasn’t given quite as much attention as the others. It feels really barebones next to Forces although I can’t quite compare it to the original yet. Considering that the game has been out since 2018, it’s just surprising how few characters and stages there are. You’re really just playing the same stage over and over again except for one different one that showed up for the Shadow tie in. There’s just not a lot to this game.

It’s an endless runner type of game so the basic gameplay is really similar. You have to run as fast as you can all the way to the end of the stage. You can jump over obstacles and slide under others. When you have enough energy meter, you can turn on auto run for around 5-10 seconds to bust through everything and get more points. Then the level never ends so eventually you can intentionally destroy yourself to end the stage. After you’ve done that, you keep your points and rings which can be used to level up your characters. You can also get a handful of red rings to eventually unlock new characters but those take a while to get. You can only get up to 10 red rings in a day and it takes 120 to unlock any characters.

It makes sense why they would want to make this a slow process though because there aren’t many characters like I said before. There are less than 10 around which is definitely not ideal. You can unlock Shadow through his event at least and he actually has his own attack. All the other characters just slide while he can actually shoot his chaos spear to destroy enemies in front of him. That’s pretty cool at least.

Still, it feels like there should be more content here. I would like to see at least a basic plot, something to keep you progressing through the game. Maybe a lot of costumes or something like that if you couldn’t afford too many characters. Although since it’s just a character model running, I wonder how hard it really is to add more. It doesn’t feel like that should be very difficult at all. Maybe there isn’t much incentive to improve the game since Sonic Boom is basically dead but at the same time they are still doing a Shadow tie in for the movie so it’s not like the game is dead.

One of the biggest weaknesses for the game is also the fact that an advertisement plays after each level that you complete. For me this is always a dealbreaker because I just don’t want to be seeing advertisements like that. It doesn’t really make any sense. It should always be an optional thing like if you decide to earn extra rings or something like that. I’ve always liked the model of using advertisements for bonus power ups and things like that but not as a mandatory part of the game. That to me is when the game starts to feel super greedy.

Also, you have to keep in mind that you are playing tons of levels here so the advertisements add up very quickly. A game cannot succeed like that so this doomed it really quickly. To even try and get me tempted back into the game you would need to cut those out and add some actual content. Not every mobile game needs to be completely endless of course but you still need to have enough content to keep me busy for a while. I seems like I would already be out of content for this one very quickly unless they artificially ramp up the grind factor later on.

I will say the most tempting part of the game is the fact that almost nobody plays anymore though. I was near the top of the rankings for the Shadow event despite barely playing at all so that was pretty cool. It’s the one big incentive about playing dead games and this only works when they don’t just add a bunch of bots to inflate the numbers. Fortunately that wasn’t the case this time. If they did that then you would never get to reach the top.

At least I can say that the graphics are really good. All of the character models are very sharp and look like their Boom counterparts. It would have been nice to have seen characters who weren’t in the show though so they could have had new designs. I suppose that was beyond this title though. The soundtrack is also good, just very limited due to the lack of stages. On a technical level I would say the game did what it needed to. The core gameplay is also really good. Granted, I tend to really enjoy endless runner titles so that’s no real surprise.

Overall, Sonic Dash 2 is just severely lacking when it comes to overall content. The fact that Miraculous Ladybug at launch had more content than this one did 6 years in is absolutely crazy. Sonic can and should have more content than what was represented here. It’s like they really weren’t trying at all and that’s unfortunate. So I would say to give this one a shot. I’d recommend the Sonic Forces dash game way more than this one. It puts in so much more effort.

Cobra Triangle Review

It’s time for one of those old school NES titles. It’s been a little while since I played one of these so that was definitely nostalgic. You have to grant the titles some slack because they’re ancient of course but the NES has delivered some good ones over the years. This one just tries a little too hard to be the next big thing and ultimately doesn’t pull it off. I appreciate the effort though.

Basically there are around 5-6 different gameplay styles in this one. All of them involve you piloting a boat. The main gameplay style is that of a race. You have to drive through the course and make it to the end within a certain amount of time. During the race, other boats will be trying to blast you away so you need to take them down. As long as you drive fast you should be able to win this one. It’s easily the easiest kind of gameplay style in the title. Ironically it is also the final stage where I was stuck at. There are some jumps that are introduced later on and if you don’t have enough speed you will lose. The problem? You need upgrades to get to that level of speed so if you made it to that part of the level without any, then you’re sunk.

Another gameplay style is about defusing bombs. You have to grab a bomb and then push it over to your side of the field like a soccer game. The other boats will try to steal the bomb back and bring it to their side. So you have to really try zigzagging a lot to keep them off your trail. It’s not easy but you’ve definitely got this. As long as you shake a whole lot while driving they usually won’t be able to steal the bomb.

You’ve also got the boss fights which is the toughest ones if you ask me. Each boss has different patterns and touching them at all will cost you serious damage. It’s extremely hard to maneuver the boat without crashing at least a little bit and then usually the vulnerable part of the boss is very small. So you really have to adjust for absolutely everything which doesn’t really leave a whole lot of time to yourself to get things right. This took a whole lot of tries to get right.

Along the way you will also have to dodge more and more traps as the game goes on like whirlpools that spawn out of nowhere and a ton of glaciers that appear from underneath the sea. They really went all out like I said before but sometimes you can just overdo it and this is one of those cases. They should have taken it a little easier on all of this and that would have made things a lot better.

The graphics are pretty good for its time. There is a lot of color here and it is absolutely in better shape than I have seen for other titles. The soundtrack is pretty much nonexistent but the themes that were there weren’t bad. Nothing to write home about. There are 25 levels in the game so that adds up to a reasonable amount of value here. It’s not a game that you would just complete overnight or anything like that after all. Well..I guess if you’re really good at it then you probably could. Technically each level is only about 1-2 minutes long, you can just expect to die a whole lot of times before you get to the end. Particularly if you intend to try and beat the game without rewinding. Me personally? I don’t recommend doing that but if you really love the game then it is definitely a way to make it last longer.

While I prefer to be able to just zoom my way through the levels and pit my speed against some opponents, I know some people like to be able to experience a lot of obstacles and having to get through them. So for those cases, this will probably work out pretty well. It’s certainly different compared to most other racing games, I can tell you that much.

Overall, Cobra Triangle isn’t really a game that I would play again. The main problem is ultimately that it’s just not too fun and of course that is a huge problem to have here. Without the rewinds you’d be dying hundreds of times to the most random RNG-esque obstacles. There is always a whole lot of dodging so you rarely get to actually just drive and have a good time. You want to strike the right balance with a game like this and unfortunately Cobra was not up to the task.

Mach Rider Review

It’s time to bring in the Mach Rider! The gameplay isn’t my favorite but the game deserves some props for actually having a story. That’s a whole lot more than I can say for some games, that’s for sure! It’s not a whole lot of a story of course, it’s mainly a prompt that you get before every level but the main theme here is that aliens have taken over and we have to take them down. It’s what the Mach Rider does!

The story mode is 10 levels long and basically you just have to survive until you get to the end of the level. This may sound easy but the game is actually fairly difficult. Basically you have to drive through a fairly narrow road while dodging any obstacles and pitfalls in your way. You have 4 speed levels, if you stay on 1-2, you will be slower than the CPUs so they will ram into you which causes you to lose. If you go on 3-4 you will stay ahead but will have a really hard time controlling your car. Other times the enemies will come from in front of you so you need to blast them away with your machine gun. It’s definitely a handy weapon to have but you can run out of ammo so be careful how you use it.

With the power of rewind and access points I did good, but this would be a super difficult challenge without it. I can’t imagine that you would have had too much fun at that point because when you lose you go all the way back to the first level again. That’s always a pet peeve of mine in any game. Be as difficult as you want to be but at least restart me on the same level. If you take me too far back then that’s just rough. There are more modes to be played though.

You have endurance where you just drive without any computers around. You have to make it to a certain distance within the time frame and then you win. It’s a pretty interesting way to go about things and I thought it was actually the most fun mode. You really had to be careful here and I made it pretty far even without using any of the Switch features. I always felt like it was mostly luck though that kept me from crashing because I really could not see where I was going at all. The objects were coming in at the speed of light, even the game couldn’t always process them in time.

There were also battle challenges about seeing how many racers you could beat. This is more effort than the average NES title so I appreciated that. The graphics aren’t bad for their time and the music is okay. Alas, at the end of the day gameplay is the King when talking about a game. You need that to be on point and the style wasn’t really something I was super into. For racing games I always like the 3D titles so you know where you are going and can make plans. In a more overhead setting like this, it’s harder to see the object before bumping into it which is my main problem. So no matter how much content the game has, it can only go so far for me as a result.

Overall, Mach Rider is a fun game in super short doses but doesn’t have the staying power for me to call it good. I’m ready to call it quits after 20 minutes which is just way too short. For a game to be good, it needs to be one that can last and ultimately this was just not up to the task. If you have the Switch Online then there is no reason not to check it out but ultimately it will be forgotten in the end. There are just better racing games that you can find around every corner that exceed this one and outplay it at every turn. The concept of the Mach Rider is solid though. Make a modern 3D remake of this game with a big story and there is a lot of potential to be had.

Overall 5/10

Wario Land 3 Review

All right guys, it’s time for a game that was really trying to be different and I can respect that to an extent but ultimately this was definitely not the way to go. The gameplay gets overshadowed by how often you have to keep replaying the same levels over and over again. The bosses tend to be rather annoying and you don’t get stronger by enough of a margin to make the whole experience worth it. And so in the end this game could not surpass all of these hurdles.

The game starts with Wario messing around a bit too much and so he crashes and then falls inside a music box where he is isekai’d into a whole new world. There, a mysterious being asks Wario to free him and stop the dark lord. If he does this then he will be given a ton of treasure and can go back home. Wario is never one to turn down a bunch of treasure so he gets to work. The musical instruments are scattered across the planet and all of them must be secured in order to rescue this guy. The problem is that each one is guarded by a monster and then those monsters can’t be accessed without different power ups that are found by getting other treasures.

So you get the idea, this is a game about journeying through the different worlds and finding all of the items that you need. You start with only basic moves like being able to run and jump. Then as you beat more levels you obtain stronger abilities like ramming through walls, picking up enemies, etc. Each level has 4 treasures. The treasures are hidden through different obstacles and paths so generally they are blocked behind obstacles that you cannot get past with your current skill level. What this means is you will be replaying the levels a whole lot of times so get ready for that. There are 25 levels so you will be playing through 100 times if you get everything.

Fortunately you don’t have to get all 100 in order to move on so you can skip some of them. That was definitely a relief because they definitely get old after a while. A game only works like this when you get noticeably stronger to the point where you can blow through the levels. Let me just blast along but the problem is that the distance tends to be the same in this one. So you are stronger but you don’t feel nearly as strong as you should and that’s the real problem here. I think there was a reasonable amount of potential here but the level designs would have needed to be just a little bit better.

At least we did have a quality of life feature where the guy trapped in the chest would tell you which level to go to next if you were lost. This is good because you rarely know where to go next after you beat a level. It’s annoying that you have to run to the guy constantly but I do appreciate that this was at least a feature since other games would have definitely missed out on that. With this, you will eventually be able to beat the game even if it will still take a while to clear.

The length is actually fairly solid so I can give the game some credit there. It may be forced because of having to replay it so much but you won’t be beating this game in an hour or two. This is a full length Nintendo title so we’re looking at around 5-6 hours I’d say. Add more if you get lost since it is quite easy to do that. The replay value is also there in getting the rest of the treasures so you don’t need to worry about that either. This is definitely a game that will be there for you…for better or worse.

The graphics are pretty good. I thought the colors were on point and the level designs were fun to look at. I may have had some issues with the layout at different points but definitely nothing against the look of the game. As for the soundtrack, that’s more on the underwhelming side. There are no tracks here that will really excite you or anything like that. A modern game could at least fix this aspect which would definitely make things more fun. The game is also desperately missing more of a story. If we had more cutscenes in between the levels that would do a whole world of good for the game as a whole. It would absolutely jump to the next level and could actually be a good game.

Overall, Wario Land 3 is definitely not one of Nintendo’s stronger titles. I would say it has enough going for it where I’m not jumping right into the negative score levels but at the same time it’s definitely not doing wonders for itself either. It’s a game that tried too much and got too ambitious in the end. It should have focused on having more levels instead of having to replay the same ones over and over again. Just focus on the platforming. If you don’t really have anything to play on hand then at least the length ensures you will be kept busy for a little while. It can pass the time but I wouldn’t actively recommend it to anyone when there are way better games out there.

Quest for Camelot Review

It’s time to play the Quest for Camelot which definitely plays out a bit different than what I had been expecting. It is an adventure that is trying really hard to be like the next Legend of Zelda but it ultimately falls short of the intended target. It’s clear from the jump that this isn’t an AAA title because it’s just missing a lot of quality of life features that would have been default otherwise. It would be a super annoying game to play without the whole rewind feature. You would constantly be wondering what you should do from here out.

The game can get surprisingly difficult for some of the bosses as well. The final boss in particular is super fast. He moves so quickly that you can barely react to his attacks and the range of your sword is so bad. You can beat him with normal slashes but it will take an impressively long time. You can use your charge attack which seems to be the intended way to win but it’s easy to miss or gets too close which will cause you to take damage instead. Everything is very sensitive in the game, if you aren’t frame perfect then it may be game over for you.

Let me take a step back for a minute though. The main gameplay style here is that of an overhead title. You run around using your sword and other gadgets to proceed through the game. You get a lot of gadgets throughout the adventure and you will be using them all a lot so get ready for that. If you forget how a gadget works then you are doomed because that is absolutely necessary here. The puzzles do not hold back at all. They are so difficult and it doesn’t help that there is no real map here. So you can be lost for quite a while.

I miss having some kind of a fast travel for the game as well. How come I can’t just teleport around in a magical world right? So instead you are running around a whole lot. you have to use a horse to travel past some obstacles but for the most part you are on your own. The large array of gadgets is impressive but it’s part of why the game can be very long since it means you always have to really think every puzzle through a whole lot because you have so many different weapon and gadgets to keep in mind.

Naturally the graphics aren’t very good since the game Boy color rarely ever tends to look all that good. It’s a shame but that’s just the way that these things go. The soundtrack is also pretty much nonexistent. There aren’t a lot of tracks and the ones that we do get don’t really have a lot of soul or energy to them. The game definitely could have done way better so that was disappointing. The brief flashes of the game where you see some potential just makes the rest of the title sting more.

Even basic things like presentation weren’t handled very well. The large text screens that are used in place of cutscenes are hard to read at times. Then you have the illustrations which are nice to see but there is no text on those images. So what’s really the point of even having those around? That’s another thing to keep in mind here and definitely not in a positive way. Just put some text on those and then the text screens could have been a whole lot smaller.

Okay there’s a lot of bashing going on there but I mentioned that the game was solid in some respects right? Well, the story itself seemed reasonably engaging. It was hard to keep track of the characters the way that the game played out but there was potential there. I also liked the combat itself. You have a lot of freedom for how you take out the villains. Moving through the levels was nice enough, I just missed the map. If I had a map though then this would all have been as easy as cake and would have been smooth as butter. The ultimate combo of combos.

Removing the puzzles would be the best thing to do in order to elevate the game to the next level though. I suppose another option you could also do would be to fix the hit boxes since you will notice that you run into empty pockets of air quite a few times. That could have definitely gone over better. That one’s more funny than negative though. At the end of the day the main annoying thing here is just that the game feels very low budget the whole time and ends up sabotaging itself. The story is reasonably long so if the gameplay was tightened up a bit this easily could have been a big winner for the Game Boy. Ah well, that’s not how it was meant to be.

Overall, Quest for Camelot is a reasonable game but one that is held back by a whole host of issues. There is just no way that I would have had any fun playing the original version on the Game Boy. I would have thrown in the towel early on and that is the sign of a game that is not successful. That’s my biggest issue with it. The difficulty is rather unreasonable and it needed a better save/check point system. The current one just isn’t doing the trick and the game often loses its momentum because of how often you have to go back and do something. You aren’t able to just have fun and continue to push forward. That’s a big problem right? I do think this could end up being a fun game series if they make a modern sequel with a ton of quality of life updates but in the meantime this title will be forgotten very quickly.

2XTreme Review

It’s time for a title that lets you play different sports. So that part’s pretty fun since you get to really switch things up all the time. That said, none of the games will really wow you and there isn’t a ton of variety to be found here. For the most parts the games are just standard so you will have a good time but you won’t be sticking around for very long. Before you know it you will be gone and this game will vanish from your memories.

I decided to play a few levels in each gameplay style to really get the hang of it. My favorite mode was bike riding. I felt like the controls worked best for this setup. It is really hard to win though so I feel like I’m still doing something wrong. No matter how much I would accelerate, I would never catch up to my opponent. Simply put, he was just way too fast. Nobody was lapping me or anything like that but I would usually be sticking to last place. At least I still got some trophies by driving quickly and staying inside of the gates but I would have liked some more wins along with that.

The other gameplay modes like skating and blading were also pretty fun. It could be a little harder to turn in those modes but still nothing crazy. Your main objective in each mode is to go ahead and win the race. Along the way you can pull off some advanced tricks like going through each gate or keeping up a top speed. If you do that then you can earn some trophies. There isn’t much of a tournament mode here though or at least it isn’t unlocked yet. The way you select the match isn’t great though so the menus could use some work.

You have to one by one go down each setting to set them up for the match and then you can start. The problem with this? That means you can’t just jump into a match with ease. It’s probably something where you won’t even notice it once you are used to the setup for a while but it definitely could have been a lot better. Just let me have my settings straight and I can keep on switching levels with ease. This is the definition of a minor problem though and not something that actually hurts anything all that much.

As far as the graphics are concerned, the game looks good. It is definitely on the older side and of course you can tell that but it’s not sloppy or low budget. It holds up as well as I would expect. The soundtrack is more on the forgettable side though. I can’t recall any of the themes at all which is definitely a problem. So the technicals are okay but nothing to write home about which fits in with the rest of the game as well. This is a game that lets you play some sports and that’s exactly what you get. Nothing more and nothing less. So you will be satisfied if that is why you have selected this title.

There isn’t a whole lot to say about the game otherwise since it is very direct. There are no real gimmicks or items here either. It all comes down to your individual skills. How do you handle the turns and unexpected obstacles? You have to always react quickly or else that is it for you. You will be surpassed by all of the other racers and then it’s game over. Although I thought I reacted quickly and I still lost every time so it is what it is.

Overall, 2XTreme is a reasonable game. I wouldn’t call it all that good but it’s certainly not bad. There’s just not a whole lot of bang for your buck here. So you will play it a bit and get accustomed to what’s going on but that’s about it. Before long you will be ready for the next title. So if you have PS+ then you should definitely check this one out but otherwise you’re not missing much if you decide to just skip it outright. You just can’t really go wrong with the game being free.
