Kirby’s Avalanche Review

Kirby is back in action and in top form I must say. He gets a lot of quality dialogue here and I wish they had let him continue to talk in the future games. Kirby’s really got a lot to say and he isn’t afraid to show it. If Nintendo had kept him like this for future games then I think he would have a similar rep to Sonic the Hedgehog as a fairly sassy character. Ah well, it wasn’t to be but I do like Kirby well enough as is anyway, it’s just fun to see this side of him. I guess he just takes Avalanche very seriously!

There isn’t much of a plot per say but Kirby keeps on challenging a bunch of fighters at Avalanche. Some of them try hurling insults but Kirby shuts that down real quick. He’s very direct to the villains that they need to train a whole lot more if they ever want to defeat him here. I love that confidence and it really shows why Kirby is the universe’s hero! There are around 13 levels or so here so this is a short game. Well…short if you are good at it! The game is impressively difficult and unless you’re familiar with this style of gameplay then you’re going to be in for a world of hurt.

It’s sort of like Tetris but I think this exact game is called something else. Basically you have a lot of gels falling at you and you have to match 4 pieces of each color together in order to get a match. That breaks them which opens up more space on your screen. The idea is that you never want to let your screen fill up entirely while filling up your opponent’s screen. When you match a lot of these gels then you will be able to throw stuff at the opponent’s screen. There is a strategy element here where you may feel that it is better not to match something right away so you can match a longer combo later but it is risky. If the opponent throws some gels at you then it can wreck all of your plans.

The game is fun enough but for me it’s not enough to hold up a whole game. I wouldn’t be playing this one much longer than the time it would take to have a good basis for this review for example. With a few more cinematics or something like that then it’s definitely possible that this game would be engaging enough but that’s not the case here. I did appreciate that we got a little voice acting and a fun script for the cutscenes though. I really can’t ask for much more than that.

The game is free with the Nintendo Switch Online so there really isn’t any reason not to check it out. Put in a little time here and if you end up liking it a lot, well now you have something to play and have fun with. So it’s a win/win decision all the way through. The graphics hold up well too and are nostalgic while still being fairly detailed. The game doesn’t feel low budget at all or anything like that. The soundtrack is also on point and it’s always a lot of fun to hear the classic Kirby tunes.

If it had a few more modes or things to do then I’d like it more. Of course you can’t expect it to have more than the normal mode so that’s just me. Considering how incredibly difficult the game is, you’ll be getting a good amount of content here and you get unlimited continues so you never have to worry about going all the way back to the beginning. I definitely like that since being sent back always feels like a waste after you’ve put so much time into the game. This is easily the best way to handle this gameplay.

Overall, There isn’t much more to talk about though since this is really a one mode game. How much you enjoy it will depend on how much you enjoy the gameplay. If you’re really talented at the machine and strategy then you’ll get to enjoy all of the fun Kirby cutscenes. They really don’t make quick Nintendo titles like this much nowadays and it’s too bad because they could dominate the market with tons of free to play app games in this kind of style. It doesn’t seem like that’s in Nintendo’s plans but they could really make bank this way. I’m closing in on finishing all of the SNES online titles, just 3 more left now!

Overall 5/10

Shinobu (Demon Slayer) vs Tyrian

Suggested by Sonic Tyrian and Shinobu are both close quarter fighters who specialize in poison so their combat styles will be a bit similar. Tyrian is more of a brute force fighter while Shinobu goes for strategic hits though. As always the fight comes down to speed here and that’s where Shinobu should be able to claim victory. I don’t see Tyrian being able to keep up with her for very long and a single good hit could take him out with the sheer dosage of poison that she puts into her strikes. Shinobu (Demon Slayer) wins.

Rak Wraithraiser vs Smoker

Suggested by Sonic Rak may have the edge in raw power here but his biggest weakness is speed. I don’t see Smoker having any issue with landing a ton of hits on Rak while he is barely able to counter in time. Rak’s hits will also have a hard time connecting with Smoker’s smoke form. His shinsu can potentially get around that but ultimately speed is still the biggest thing setting these two apart. Rak won’t be able to overcome that. Smoker wins.

Rei Sakigake vs Anak

Suggested by Sonic Rei Sakigake has a lot of good cards at her disposal and is a strong fighter but at the end of the day I don’t see her taking Anak down in this fight. Anak is quicker and while the sheer numbers can prove to be a bit troublesome, Anak should be able to bypass most of them with relative ease and then land a knockout blow against Rei. Rei doesn’t have the durability needed to endure attacks like that and so she will go down really quickly. Anak wins.

Ritsuka Fujimaru vs Darc

Suggested by Sonic Darc has some pretty solid dark abilities and managed to hold his own against virtually every kind of fighter in his video game. That said, Ritsuka has formed contracts with several servants that he has been able to fight with in different wars and has mystic code attacks of his own. I don’t see Darc being quick enough to land a decisive blow on Ritsuka before going down. Ritsuka may be a glass cannon but an effective one. Ritsuka Fujimaru wins.

Hector vs Inosuke

Suggested by Sonic Hector is a powerful fighter who has good equipment so he won’t be doing down easily. That said, he still won’t be able to keep up with Inosuke. Inosuke is a savage fighter with speed that is on a different level and his breathing techniques will give him the advantage here. Hector isn’t quite agile enough to stop the attacks in time and will go down here. Inosuke wins.

Anguirus vs Edward (Twilight)

Suggested by Destroyer Anguirus has some pretty sharp spikes so he should be able to just crush Edward with a rolling attack. Edward’s got speed on his side but I don’t think it will ultimately be enough to win here. He still needs some way to deliver decisive damage to his opponent and Anguirus has enough durability to take those hits for a while. Edward would need some kind of special weapon in order for him to claim victory here. Anguirus wins.

Luigi vs King Dedede

Suggested by Destroyer King Dedede is fairly strong and deals with King Dedede a lot but I would say he may be lacking the agility to deal with Luigi here. He’ll need to spread out the Gordos and his hammer attacks while Luigi has to try and use electricity and anything else that he has at the ready. It’s a classic speed vs power battle but in this case power actually wins. I think Dedede is just skilled enough to pull out the win. King Dedede wins.

Ganondorf vs The BioLizard

Suggested by Destroyer Ganondorf has a lot of physical power particularly thanks to Hyrule Warriors so if he can get in close then he has a shot but that will be tough because of just how strong The BioLizard is with his long range options. He has a ton of energy blasts and long range beams that he can use all day. While Super Sonic and Super Shadow were able to deal with this, it will be very tough fo rGanon and he will be overwhelmed. The BioLizard wins.

Thanos vs Jean Grey

Suggested by Destroyer Now this is a really close battle between two of Marvel’s top heavy hitters. Both of these characters can easily end the planet in an instant. I would say that Thanos has more hax with the Gauntlet while Jean Grey definitely has the better long range options. In a fist fight Thanos is winning this one but he’ll have a hard time keeping up with Jean Grey in the air. So it can go either way but ultimately I trust Thanos more with his tactics and more attack options. Thanos wins.
